Virginia Tech moved up one spot this week from #13 to #12 in both the AP and the USA Today Coaches Polls.
The biggest jumps in the polls this week were TCU, who went from #16 to #9 in the AP Poll and #15 to #11 in the Coaches Poll and Georgia, who went from #11 to #7 in the AP Poll and #12 to #8 in the Coaches Poll. Florida State and Oregon both dropped from the AP Polls after their losses to NC State and Arizona State respectively, though Florida State rounds out the Week 5 Coaches Poll at #25.

I think that is a fair spot. Possibly a bit aggressive to jump TCU that many spots in one week. If we have a close loss I dont see us dropping far. A win however, clearly if we were to follow TCU would put us top 7
#12 beating #2 surely deserves top 5
We're not jumping any of the current top 5 except Clemson if we beat them. There's a chance we would come in at #5 but 6 or 7 would be more realistic.
Only ranking I care about is if we are undefeated at the end of the year, we are in the playoff.
just go 1 - 0 this week
the rankings will take care of themselves
It's also so much easier to have this attitude now with the 4-team playoff system. Just take care of business, and you'll be in the top 4 when it matters.
Fuente's whole approach to 1-0 and "tunnel vision" is perfect for the new bowl/ranking system. You're right. Just keep putting in the work and effort to get the results and the ranking will follow. Also gotta shout out to whoever does the Instagram, feed for the team, those posters they make each week are
Also from Instagram:
It's not my fault they signed up. This is what you get!!
Pardon my ignorance, but who is they? ODU signing up? I must be missing something...
They is the opponent. He is saying that it isn't his fault that VT is about to go punish them, they (ODU) signed up to play this game.
Ok, that's what I thought, thanks.
I think he got it from DJ Khaled
Ok but it's fun as a fan to talk about rankings every week regardless of whether they really matter or not
i was hoping we would be at least #10, but ok its still early in the season and all those big ten teams have to play each other, maybe they'll wup up on each other.
If that IOWA-PSU game is any indication, they just might.
Also, calling it now, the RB for PSU wins the Heisman this year. That guy is a physical freak.
Saquon played against my high school a few years back and absolutely shredded us. Been telling people for years he's the real deal.
I think it's a bunch of bullshit. 2 teams ahead of us lose and we go up 1 spot? The SEC Bias is coming in.
If we beat Clemson, watch out for the ACC is down bullshit. You know because FSU lost its starting Clemson lost to us.
The only team that jumped us is TCU, a Big 12 team, who jumped that high by beating #6 by 2 TDs.
How is that SEC bias?
Georgia went from #11 to #7 by beating a #17 Mississippi State team. What merits a jump that high into the top 10 when 2 teams lose in front of them?
I'll be honest, you aren't making any sense right now...
What merits a 4 spot jump by Georgia? They beat a team they should have beat and yes they were ranked, but they completely hopped some teams in front of them. I don't know how you don't see that. You'll only see that with an SEC team. TCU deserves the jump.
I'm not worried about the BIG Ten. That will sort itself out very shortly.
Um...because that win is better than the wins of the teams in front of them. It seems like you are falling into the trap of placing too much weight on preseason polls. Why should Ohio State still be ranked ahead of Georgia. Why should Wisconsin or Michigan stay ahead of Georgia? The only reason is preseason ranks. This early in the season each win is weighted greater due to lack of games played.
I agree with Koastal... you aren't making sense or you are making your own point but you don't realize it.
The moved from #11 to #7 because they beat down the #17 team that everybody was high on after beating LSU which most likely persuaded voters to put above Wisconsin and (an already one loss) Ohio State. Okie State lost and Michigan played like shit, so thats why they jumped them. How is them at #7 making no sense? It's not like they jumped from #11 to #3 or some shit like that
Just for argument sake....if beating #17 doesn't merit a 4 spot jump, do you think VT was justified in moving up multiple spots each week after beating #23 WVU, Delaware and ECU?
You're moving the goal posts here.
If you're saying that we should have moved up to #11 based on two teams losing, you can't go off on a rant about Georgia, who was a team above us before this weekend. Other than TCU, it doesn't matter what the rankings are for the teams above VT, because they're still above us.

It all good. Where were we 3 years ago?
I don't want to think about it.
What are you talking about? We should be ranked higher! Where we were three years ago...
Ok, yeah I'm good with 12th in the nation
She's qualified.
I'm glad somebody said it because my first thought was that McKayla Maroney is bae
Advice: look up her modeling photos
Can't believe it took 4 days for this one to show up.
let's not
I like it, but even a close loss to the Tigers and we drop back in the 20's. The voters look at the logo on the side of the helmet, they like VT but they LOVE them some SEC schools, some PAC 12 schools with a marketable QB, OSU, and Oklahoma. The rest of the world needs to be perfect
The Big10 is the obvious sweetheart right now
Which, in my eyes, is fucking astonishing. Cannot get my mind wrapped around the love they garner.
Hahaha seriously. There has been absolutely nothing to suggest Wisconsin, Ohio State or Michigan belong anywhere near the top 10, besides preseason polling (bullshit) and name recognition. I see especially Wisconsin and Michigan having rough years, with Michigan winning a few more games than they should because of the Harbaugh factor. They will think they're a lot better than they are
The midwest states travel. You will never see them left out, because their fans will always travel cause the weather sucks where they are. Money talks!
A winless FSU ranked on the Coaches Poll everybody!!! What a fucking joke.
Greatest winless team of all time
Has to be the SEC bias \s
Yup, winless FSU is above 4-0 Duke.
Now we're really in the alternate reality when
and
are in the same sentence about football.
And the winless FSU is above the 3-1 team that beat them.
Still a little irritated that both Miami and FSU were basically given an extra week off with practice. Most of the other Florida teams might have canceled one game but played last weekend.
not sure about FSU, but Miami didn't get any extra practice, and the regular week before their game they did get, was not at their own facilities. http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/20733869/in-wake-irma-mi... before this turns into another massive back in forth thread in a previous discussion. I guarantee no school would want to have dealt with that.
This will not give either FSU or Miami any advantage. It likely will put them behind schedule on season development.
Personally I hope we get as much disrespek as possible this week. We tend to blow it when we're hyped up and when we're the big underdogs we usually show up to play.
We tended to blow it when we were hyped under Beamer. We have no idea how a Fuente-led Hokies squad will respond to national hype.
Yeah we do. See: October 15, 2016, and November 12, 2016.
Andy Bitter voted VT at #10, and provided explanations for each team in his release (which I think is pretty cool):
Bitter: How I voted on my Week 5 AP Top 25 ballot
Bitter's writing is still top notch.
I miss the good old days when there was official cross posting between TKP and AB. I guess you could say I'm still just a little...Bitter?
You could also say we're not as Bitter as we used to be.
Total Defense: 28
Scoring Defense: 6
Total Offense: 14
Scoring Offense: 27
But what about TOP?
How does this not have more legs? When was the last time we saw numbers this high??
Me! Me! I know, I know!!
Never...
Lets take a minute to really appreciate the job Fuente has done since becoming the head coach.
After multiple underperforming years (on the field and recruiting wise), here we are 18 games into his tenure, and we are having a legitimate discussion over whether we should be #10 or if #12 is more appropriate.
Here's what I like about the ranking. At #12, I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone save a straight up VT hater that would say we are undeserving of the rank. And talk about the best opportunity you could possibly have in the sport to prove whether or not you belong in the discussion.
#2
@Lane
#ExitLight
Get it done, and that ranking takes care of itself.
And if you think it's good now, just wait til the depth we are starting to accumulate in recruiting becomes upperclassmen bolstered by classes of guys he is recruiting
