I saw no signs on sticks rule on hokiesports? but on TV i see a lot of them... what should I do?
I believe those are furnished by GameDay and corporate sponsors.
That's a crock of horseshit if that's true. I'll be bringing my sign on my push pole, which extends to 17 feet.
I went and bought some big ass sticks at wally world and now I can't use them smh
As far as I know, you can have signs on sticks. Just not in the pit area. It's always that way I think.

If i remember correctly, inside the official zone you cant have poles, outside you can do what you want as long as it is FCC compliant.

Yep. Wasn't aware of this Miami 05. I had a turkey decoy tied to the top of a long, cylindrical, cardboard roll thingy and I had to leave it at the gate. It got gone before we left the pit. Buuut, had college chicks taking pictures with me and my big ol pole (phrasing be damned), and as a 13yr old with an awesome mustache, I was ecstatic.

I'm so happy we are just talking about all this, Coach Fue has done a terrific job in a short 2 years to completely turn this program around. At the end of the end of the Beamer era this team was basically nationally ignored (nothing against Beamer). BUT NOW WE ARE #12 IN THE COUNTRY HOSTING COLLEGE GAMEDAY
So I can't drink Saturday and I don't have tickets to the game. My wife works and I have the kids all day. Suggestions on how to maximize our enjoyment of this special event to the fullest? I'm seriously asking for suggestions.
EDIT: I'll be in Blacksburg so I'm thinking tailgate (sober, ugh) then home to watch the game. Not sure what else should be on the list. Kids in the Game Day pit seems like a poor life choice. (END EDIT)
I'd give anything for one more shot at a College Game Day experience as a college student without a care in the world aside from maintaining sobriety just enough to stay out of jail. Students, take note: you WILL look back fondly at days like tomorrow, enjoy the shit out of it.

I had some good Wednesdays at Tech.
Wine Wednesday at Boudreaux's was a BLAST. Also used to throw some crazy Wednesday night parties sophomore year before the police got fed up with it

I don't have kids.... yet.... but depending on their age, you can still hit up Game Day outside the pit. I don't think it wouldn't be super rowdy and I bet they'd have fun (also, pending their age and interest level in CFB).
If you did go and hung out for a bit and wanted to leave, you could hit up the CineBowl and watch the game on the giant screens all day/night while you bowl/arcade.
Otherwise, I'm unfamiliar with what to do in B'burg/on campus during a game day without boozin' and slingin' the rock.
Going to GameDay is a great experience for everyone. This weekends location on Alumni Mall will leave plenty of room for you and your kids to have a good time.
Enjoy Saturday if you are a kid, a college student, an adult or and old Hokie. For a long time it seemed routine; it wasn't and should be relished at every opportunity.

My son. I am a better parent than my parents who NEVER took me to a Tech game.

That is one of a kind; now family heirloom. Both kids loved it and it was great for cold weather.

Yes. I dreamed about Gameday being here while I was a student at Tech for literally my entire childhood. You bet your ass I'll be front row.
Not a student, but I'll be there at 5 AM with a bunch of students that live off campus. We reserved parking at the Kent Square garage on Parkingpanda.com and the guy told us we could park as early as we would like. Hopefully I'll still be relatively close to the front at 5 so you all can see my sign!
I stayed outside the gate ALL night in 99 when Gameday first came. It was a blast. We were in the first or second row for Gameday.
I was actually on TV for a fan closeup and on the intro for SC with the guy sitting next to me.

Sounds like I am in the minority but we went to Gameday in 2005 when I was a student and found the experience pretty boring. You just stand there and look at the backs of the hosts and you can't even hear what they were saying. I think the only time they ever even played the audio was during the final VT pick. Maybe it has gotten better since then but I remember my lasting memory was thinking that I would never do that again.
With that being said, I am glad that they are back in VT for the additional exposure to the program and will be watching on TV.
This was my memory of 05 as well. Couldn't hear anything, just a huge mass of people milling about. We stayed for about 20 minutes outside the pit and then left to go tailgate
They have a large TV showing gameday now, so you should be able to see/hear.
My best friend will be... I will be sleeping haha. Gameday at Bristol was underwhelming for me so not worth it to be up that early.

I think they did a good job with the location pick - Torg Bridge as the backdrop is Hokie.
Was partially pulling for Randolph Hall to be the backdrop. Nothing says Virginia Tech quite like that fine piece of brick work!
Kind of surprised they didn't do the drill field with Burruss as the backdrop just to mix things up. Looks like this will be the same spot as 2005
I think it is the perfect spot. My hope is that the stage would actually be on Drill Field Drive. That way you could have the bridge was a backdrop for one camera angle and the war memorial a backdrop for the other.
Either way, it shows the most beautiful part of campus for the show.

Most likely didn't want to run the risk of TV crews, cheerleaders, fans etc. stomping around the 4-16 memorial.
Any word from university administration on if they'll hang the new logo from Torg Bridge so the Pylons don't show in the background and confuse the world? /s
I want to go to gameday (I have a sign) but I know nothing about it. I'm getting a whole bunch of different suggestions on when to go and I'm also hearing there are two different sections for fans to stand in? which one is best if i want to be on TV with my sign the most. I've heard I need to get there by midnight. If that's true, is it like a line I stand and I can just bring a sleeping bag and camp in my spot until the section opens up?
Any and all help will be appreciated, I was too young for the last one and I dont want to miss out on this one!
"the pit" is where you want to be if you want a good shot at your sign getting on TV. that is the area with pat-down searches and restrictions like "no signs on sticks'. otherwise I think you're free to just walk up and watch from further back. folks with really big / tall signs may be able to get them spotted on TV from outside the pit in background shots
some people line up for the pit the night before, but having never attended game day in person I don't know how early you'd want to get there to ensure a "good" spot in the pit.
the guidelines at http://www.hokiesports.com/football/gameday/2017/game3.html do not say anything about no sleeping bags or no camp chairs in the pit, but bags and backpacks are prohibited, so they may frown on anyone trying to bring a bunch of extraneous stuff in with them
This may be a dumb question but I am new to this. How are you guys printing large images for your Gameday signs? I was thinking I would print mine across multiple sheets of paper and piece it together on a poster but I was not sure if that would look bad or not.
Most of your chain office stores can print poster sized images for a reasonable price. I don't live in Blacksburg anymore so I don't know where abouts you'd go locally though I imagine the Officemax in cburg does it.
It cost me $5 to print off a large picture at Office Depot. Either take an jump drive with a picture there, or you can email the picture to their direct store email that you can find at the store.
