Yeah, I initially thought they were going to wear the orange pants we have seen in recent years with the triple white/maroon/white stripes on the sides. If you wear a maroon helmet, white jersey, and orange pants all with different colored stripes it just looked weird to me. Solid orange looked a lot better.

I usually don't like to count my eggs before they hatch..
But I think the team would be ok if Cam and CJ need one additional week and have to sit (or take limited reps) against UNC. Ideally we will have them back, but if they need an extra week I think they can manage.

If you had told me we would be 5-1 at the break I would've taken it. Let's take a week off to heal up and get ready for the Coastal division. What are the chances we jump Michigan this week?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Looking at it in terms of the teams each has won/lost to: Michigan hasn't really beaten anyone, OU has a win over tOSU (which looks better than our win over WVU at this point). Higher than OU and lower than Michigan makes sense, not that that will happen...
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You mean the Florida State team that scraped by Wake last week? Yeah, they are still being referred to as a "powerhouse" team by the local media down here... It's a disgrace to the game, honestly...
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
FSU is 1-3 and they canceled a game, meaning they only play 11 this year. With games against Clemson and University 6 still to go, they are staring down a 5 loss season at a minimum this year. Lose 1 more to Duke, BC, Syracuse, or Florida and they don't go bowling.
But yeah, great team...
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
If they go 5-6, I wager they will still go bowling, since there are so many bowls, that each year at least 1 team with a losing record makes it to a bowl. At 5-6 their win pct will be higher than 5-7 teams.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
My Question is hypothetically if they do that poorly will they still accept a bowl bid? I believe it was a blue blood Texas?, but didn't a team turn down a bid because they went 5-7? I feel like FSU should they do that poorly may turn down a bid because it would be a bad look.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Doesn't APR get factored into bowl consideration when looking at teams with <6 wins? If so, FSU would be screwed.
If they do get a bid, there is no way that they turn it down. They will not give up that bowl streak without a fight. And Fisher sure as hell won't want that on his resume.

Isn't there something about their bowl streak being unofficial because of vacated wins? I guess its weird to me that a team like FSU would allow themselves to go to a bowl to probably blowout some 5-7 team from nowhere just to keep their streak alive. I guess it comes down to streak vs the FSU "brand". Granted this is all hypothetical, I guess to me is could see them thinking its beneath them if that makes sense.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
One of FSU's bowl games was vacated, so the NCAA officially says we have the longest streak. But they also say that the 2004 national championship and 2009 ACC Championship games never happened.
Depending on what narrative someone wants to push, the different stats are used.
I wouldn't mind FSU missing a bowl so we can make that asterisk go away.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I absolutely agree. If they don't outright miss bowl season, then I guess what I'm wondering is how important is the bowl streak if/when it comes to a 5-7/6-6 bowl game? I may be in the minority but I would say skip a meaningless bowl if that occurs. Own up to a poor season, don't risk players getting hurt and prepare to comeback next season.

Serious question can you still practice if you turn down a bowl bid? As for the other two points how much do those bowls help a team like FSU? Can you schedule visits for bowl games/ or can you continue to recruit during that time? I see the exposure if you are a recruit at the game in a market that is not usual for FSU so some where far west or north. However beyond that I guess i'm curious how much exposure does the FSU brand need? I guess I kind of think of over exposure like watch that game then think there is a possibility you are the 4th/5th best team in your state behind UCF and USF, does it make the school look bad?

No.

Practice time, prestige / bragging rights.

No change. Recruiting calendar doesn't care if you're bowling or not.
If a recruit comes while you're still practicing, he can see your routine. If you're done for the season, you have more free time to spend with the recruit, but potentially harder questions to answer.
how much exposure does the FSU brand need?
It's not like FSU needs exposure. However, now that they're assumed to be an elite program, if they ever miss a bowl season it'll be a really bad look.
Also, coaches generally have bonuses associated with bowl appearances. They're tiered, so the school won't pay as much for the "Jim-Bob's Roadside Motel & Bait Shop Bowl" as for the Sugar Bowl, but it's more than zero.
there is a possibility you are the 4th/5th best team in your state behind UCF and USF, does it make the school look bad?
Sure, but not as bad as "that team that can't even make a bowl." (Cough LOLUVA cough)

I really like Savoy. His speed and moves after the catch are a joy to watch. I just he would not feel compelled to drop the first ball thrown to him each game. He'll get better with experience. He's got a bright future, IMO.

We won, despite an early injury to our best offensive weapon. I think Savoy and Kumah performed admirably and it was good to see. Lots to work on, but a win is a win, especially in Boston at night. That place was like a library.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I expect the confidence that Savoy and Kumah gained tonight, plus Keene's growth will result in JJ feeling comfortable spreading the ball around a little more, in the future. This will be a very good thing when we get to the back to back road games vs GT and Miami.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
We need Cam and Carroll back as quickly as possible, but hopefully their absences opened up the door for a guy like Kumah. Having another reliable weapon for JJ would be huge down the stretch.

Think Phillip's injury was kind of a blessing disguise. Allowed those guys to get some good reps and give them some confidence. I've been of the mindset that they need a big game to get the monkey off their back.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I had the same exact thought. As soon as it looked like Cam wasn't coming back, I texted my friend and said that if there was a game to get the new guys some meaningful reps against a good-ish defense, this was the game to do it since BC's offense is bad and most likely wouldn't capitalize on a turnover/3-and-out.
Kumah and Savoy really impressed me. Murphy looks like he is good once he gets the ball in his hands (especially when he has some room), but he seems to have stone hands sometimes.

Despite an atmosphere that begged for a let down- effort was there tonight even though execution wasn't.
Fuente said it best in the radio post game show- with a team this young on offense, every game is going to be a 3 1/2 hour stomach ache. The penalties were not good.
They got the W and can get the heck out of Boston. Now get healthy and work out some of the kinks up front. For me, the play of the returning starters (Nijman, Teller, and Gallo) really needs some improvement. Those guys have to lead by example when they are so young elsewhere.

Unrealistic expectations and excessive hand-wringing means there's buy-in amongst the fanbase. Like it or not, a program doesn't become elite without some batshit crazy fans spewing Finebaum-level insanity. Clemson boards were in meltdown against BC and again this week against Wake. Bama could drop a hundred on someone and Bama fans would be livid it wasn't too hundred. So in a way, I'm glad to see that level of hubris returning to our program...as long as it stays on the other boards.

The slow starts are a legit problem. Even CJF has said so. That said, it's pretty much Standard Operating Procedure after a loss to have emotional fans blaming the OC/DC/HC/Hokie Club/Blacksburg Mayor/whatever. You kinda have to ignore those and move on.

We scored a TD on the 2nd possession. Had a pick on the 1st where the ball was tipped but pick would have been over turned if Dholding was called instead of DPI. 1/4 of our total yds came in those 2 possessions. Not sure how that's a slow start.

I wasn't really referring to this week. This one wasn't really too bad. I don't have the link handy, but I remember reading that VT's being outscored pretty badly in the first quarter this year, though the third quarter of games has been the opposite.

I'm not sure as to the reason that people think that getting out to a big lead, with a FR QB and FR/SO WR's & RB's then moving to clock killing mode and leaning on a seasoned veteran D, to bring home the win is a bad thing.
aTm didn't do that in week 1 and blew a 34 pt lead, with less than 20 min to go. Burn even a little clock and it was an easy W for them.
When CornFu eases up on the passing with a big lead (and frosh QB) and Bud's D doesn't bring home the win, THEN I'll start to entertain ideas that either or both (CornFu) isn't the right person for the job.

Bud Foster on the trick play BC scored a TD on: "I knew that was going to come. And it did." Kind of irked that it worked. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) October 8, 2017

Just watched the replay. No, it wasn't perfect or even pretty, but a W in Boston before the bye week and 5-1...I'll take it. As many of you had mentioned, glad Savoy, Kumah, and a few others had confidence building games in Cam's absence. Let's get healthy over the next two weeks and get ready to dispatch the state of North Carolina the two weeks following.

The season is a roller coaster of expectations. I think prior to the season my expectations were pretty reasonable, given the youngness on offense. Then we had a few pretty convincing wins and the AP, who really doesn't know jack, kept bumping us up. I bought into it and my expectations on the season skyrocketed. Now between Clemson (which was not an unmitigated disaster) and BC, I think expectations have been re-calibrated to a more reasonable level. If anything it's the incredible job Fu/Corn have done that has given us the opportunity to feel that excitement for a little bit this season. I still think we've got a solid chance at 9 to 10 wins, which would be pretty sweet all things considered. Excited about the future when the weapons they have been recruiting come online.

1-0 Fam!
Least lit night game in a long time. But I will take it for a win!
Yeah even for BC that atmosphere was disappointing. Looked like there was plenty of Hokies there tho.
Loefflers O is a really good fit for that environment
5-1 FAM

Not to be that person, but shouldn't the title be Postgame Thread??
EDIT: Thanks.
Distant uncle who you haven't seen in six years but you just found out he's coming for thanksgiving and it technically counts as family, FAM!!!
Glad we got the win. Annoyed we allowed a TD on a weak gimmick play and to my knowledge we didn't sack him once.
Ugh. Fam, I suppose, for 1-0 this week.
Did the defense even get/force a turnover?
Negative Ghost Rider. Motu forced a fumble but the guy picked it right back up.
No, it yo-yoed off the ground and right back into his hands
FAM
Wasn't pretty but considering what has happened to a few ranked teams today we should be pleased. We were wearing orange pants after all.
No more orange pants this year
why not, we won?
FIFY. Burn them!!
I was originally opposed, but the solid orange pants with the white face mask really looked good on the field.

Suck it BC. 5-1 at the break.

X-rays were negative. Just a strained ankle. Collective sigh of relief
High or low ankle sprain? Either way, might not be healed in two weeks.

Addazio looks confused, but what the hell is the dude to his right thinking about?
I think the fumes from both spray on head tans are getting to him.
That was some amazing kush?
A W is a W. These other boards/groups are reminding me of TN fans (I live near Bristol).
In Fuente I trust
In Bud I trust
In JJ I trust
WE STILL LIT FAM!!!!!!!!
There are other boards?
Yep, we won. FAM
Oh, but next time don't put it in neutral and coast when there's still time left in the race. Hammer down the whole way.
If you had told me we would be 5-1 at the break I would've taken it. Let's take a week off to heal up and get ready for the Coastal division. What are the chances we jump Michigan this week?
We should. We both have a loss: ours to the #2 team (when we were underdogs), theirs as a favorite to an unranked team. We should also jump OU.
My money is we don't jump either.
I doubt that it will happen. "rivalry game" blah, blah, blah, tough B1G, blah, blah, blah.

Bowl Game> No Bowl for several reasons.
1. Additional Practice Time
2. Additional Exposure of your brand.
3. It aids in recruiting.

I like a win when we don't play well and our QB still completes 66% of his passes for 330 without his best receiver.

Disappointed that Bud let the Loefflerfense get a touchdown.

What happened to that last lonely beer?
Actually we we're classy yesterday, and had a case of Busch and a case of Miller Lite. So it was 54 in total. A happy group of 7 left in the cooler.
Shout out to Big TIM ---> Is it just my imagination or is that guy devouring blocks in the middle and wreaking havoc?????!!!
He and Ricky may be the key to stopping the Gtech B back and giving us a solid chance at the win.
Something something stars matter.
The defensive line will be unreal next season.
