Just read a post discussing the top 8 most likely 1 loss teams to get to the CFP. I noticed that there was a glaring mistake with their top 8 so I decided to fix it:
1) THE Ohio State
2) Auburn
3) USC
4) VT
5) ND
6) NC State
7) Ok St
8) Oklahoma
What's your top 8?

Oklahoma is way higher than 8th-best 1 loss team. Argue all you want about them losing to an extremely mediocre Iowa State team, but Clemson lost last season to an extremely mediocre Pittsburgh team.
I'd put VT 6th on this list.
Why would VT be 6? Winning out would entail wins over Miami and Clemson again. Ranked teams are dropping like flies in the Big12 so Oklahoma doesn't exactly have a gauntlet of a schedule left.
Currently I would rate VT 6th on this list, not necessarily what I think they could finish the season as. Other teams are more talented and have a better shot at winning out and making the playoffs in my opinion.
Ok nvm. I read this as a list of teams with one loss making the playoffs. So assuming each team won out. I see now that is not correct.
I agree, but I also said most likely, not the best.
Hmm, let's pretend resume is the only thing that matters here. I would think Vt gets in over USC in this case. Only loss to Clemson with a revenge win the ACCCG? Stanford isn't a terrible loss, but not as forgiving as Clemson. Again, remove the name, just the resume.
There are only two scenarios here, and they go in this order:
1) Auburn because SEC
2) OSU because of the hype they always seem to have.
31-0 bro
Ohio State could lose 3 times and the committee would still come up with a reason to put them in.
I think VT still gets in if it involves a revenge win over an undefeated or 1-loss Clemson (I don't think that will happen anyway). However, if VT runs the table but beats, say, NC State, I think it would really depend on the other 1-loss teams...especially if Clemson is a 1-loss team that doesn't have to play in the ACCCG. I think the committee will really hold that Clemson loss against us if we don't make up for it against them. I guess what I'm getting at is I think there is a strong chance we could get Penn State'd in a scenario where NC State beats Clemson in the regular season and both of them fail to lose another game.
My ranking would probably be:
1. Oklahoma
2. Ohio State
3. Auburn
4. USC
5. OK State
6. VT
7. Notre Dame
8. NC State
9. Michigan
1. OK State - Already took their lump against TCU. If they win out the rest of the season and get a TCU loss somewhere, I think they are in.
2. USC - They have the potential to roll the rest of the Pac 12 and have a Washington Championship game which, if won, they are almost a lock for me.
3. VT - The only big games left on the schedule are Miami and Clemson. It's never safe to overlook the Coastal, but VT should have the strength to make it a play in game. The real question is, does Clemson get left off if VT takes the ACC?
4. OU - They have a goddamn buzz saw of a schedule left. TCU, OK St, WVU, Kansas St, Texas Tech, and a rivalry game vs Texas. 3 ranked opponents in 6 games.
5. Auburn - They need to stay unbeaten and beat Bama in the Iron Bowl.
6.Ohio State - Has Penn State and Michigan still on the schedule
7. Michigan - Still has Penn State and Ohio State on the schedule
8. NC State - Has to play Clemson and ND
9. ND - Has 5 ranked teams for their remaining 6 games. Two of them are USC and NC State
Yeah Oklahoma State, USC, and VT are all in the same boat because they can win out then win a revenge game in the conference championship. The main difference setting one of the teams apart is the absolute fetish ESPN has for USC, which probably makes them most likely to get in
I don't think people should sleep on GT as a big game. Their offense forces tacklers to be sound at all times and they can wear down the defensive line. Those are two areas that I see reason to be concerns with so far. Coupled with the fact that our offense might not get enough drives to get into a rhythm and I'm not sure it's a great matchup for us.
Yes, it will be a big game for us, but it won't be seen as nearly that important or exciting of a game nationally.
They get Miami and Clemson before us so depending on those results it could be. Of course a GT win over Miami and loss to Clemson would probably take some national luster off both Miami and GT games.
I hear what you're saying. I just don't think anyone outside the ACC, save UGA, takes GT seriously. They never win enough to get too much national respect and unless you play them every year, you don't realize how the triple option can nickel and dime you to death up and down the field while eating the clock.
You make a really good point here. Navy is another example (although they're moving to a pistol version of the offense, or so it seems) . Quietly 5-0, ranked 25th. Triple option offense.. And before anyone says to "look at their schedule, they aint played nobody (PAAAWWWLLLL-sorry...)" Neither has Miami really, and they're getting more hype than they probably deserve. (It's the flashy offense, and ESPN needs some B.S. to spew).
Navy has a decent bit of talent. They don't win a ton of games every year, but they have "flash in the pan years. They nickel and dime the shit out of teams, and they live and die by doing so. GT is the same way. GT could be dangerous. Especially being that its away from Lane this year..
Weird that they included NCSU and not VT for one-loss ACC teams. I guess NCSU is just on everyone's minds after a big win.

Dinich is a hater...
As if we need a reason to avoid E$PN already
The big 10 jwrkfest this year is just disgusting. Penn State barely beat the only team they played against with a pulse. Michigan just lost to a mediocre State team. Ohio state has lost to the only team they played. I mean, cmon man! Meanwhile, Clemson had the most wins over ranked teams, but are 2 instead of 1.
...
Not sure if you know this or not, but Bama isn't in the Big10...
For Auburn to be a 1-loss CFP team, they have to run the table. Which necessarily means beating Georgia, Alabama, and very likely Georgia again.
Nah, homie.
Was gonna post this. Beating UGA twice in the span of 4 weeks would be EXTREMELY cathartic for Auburn fans, as Gus has only beat UGA once in his HC tenure at Auburn (Prayer/Miracle in Jordan-Hare game). There's no way it actually happens.
What would be EXTREMELY interesting is a 2-loss Auburn that's an SEC Champion. Lose to UGA, beat Bama, beat UGA in the SECCG. That'd be a likely 1-loss UGA team at that point.
NC State, good team. But they beat a bad Florida State, and a bad Louisville. That's all I'm saying
Dark horse pick - Georgia Tech.
I'm really afraid of GT this year... Their QB is probably the best to run their option since Nesbitt, if not better (not as strong, but much faster, better arm, and better at the pitches/fakes IMO). Their defense looks decent this year too. If they were to run the table, they'd have wins over VT, Miami, Clemson, UGA and the ACC Atlantic champ, with one loss very similar to OSU's 2014 loss to VT.
It would be extremely difficult and unlikely, but they would have the resume. Frankly, I think they are just as likely to win the Coastal this year as Miami or VT.
Per GT fans, he is a work in progress. Don't get too excited about him. JT had a muuuuch better arm. JT was putting up some pretty absurd passing numbers actually. Also JT was much more of an elusive, fast runner. He could take it to the house in a flash.
I mean, I live in Atlanta and have watched 3 of their games this year. I'm convinced he's better than Justin Thomas or Nesbitt. I think they have a 50% chance of beating VT/Miami, 15/20% chance of beating Clemson/UGA. Those aren't great odds, but they're not terrible.
Ok fair enough. I disagree though. He is just a different type of QB than JT. JT statistically was one of the most efficient passers in the country in 2014 and ran an incredibly efficient offense. I'd rather play against a QB that is less likely to take it to the house considering our tackling woes at the moment.
with our habit of starting games slow, I am very, very opposite of bullish on our chances against GT. Right now, I seriously think we only have about a 25% chance of beating GT. Our style just does not lend itself to having success against a team that will legitimately limit your opportunities.
I am confused.
is wrong use of "bullish". like that one time that one guy in that one thread said that Liberty was hemorrhaging money and then pointed to their record revenues and donations as proof.
Math shows that it is the right use of bullish
bullish - i (because i is an imaginary number which means it is insignificant because there is no room for imagination in math. Coincidentally i is also the most annoying number, much like Paul Johnson's offense.)
bullsh+ur (GT's current rank)
bullrush --> Paul Johnson just countered the bullrush with a chop block, the ultimate defense against good defense. This results in a loss of 25% of your defensive line.

Bullish: optimistic
Bearish: pessimistic

I have to disagree. Garnish's are frequently edible.
I'm pretty sure the last time we played Nesbitt, it ended with his right arm broken.
I think we would've lost if he
stayed in the gameavoided injury. We were only down a TD when he went out, but I remember feeling like they were dominating us in the first half.I think he would have played a lot differently if he had stayed in with that broken arm, and we likely would have won anyway. Though the interception was a big play without the injury, and may have been enough of a spark even if he not left.
As soon as I saw Heather Dinich wrote this, I clicked off the article.
When I saw the HD clickbait warning in front of the link I jumped down the comments.
If the CFP committee can't learn then it will be Ohio State. Last year they should have been suspicious of Ohio State after losing to Penn State in the B1G Championship. They weren't and then Ohio State got blanked by Clemson. Other teams who shared that distinction were FCS South Carolina State and 4-8 Syracuse.
Nope: Nothing There...

anOSU and PSU are in the same division. anOSU lost a close regular season game to PSU, keeping them out of the championship game. PSU beat Wisconsin in the big ten championship game.
We barely beat a shitty BC team after losing to Clemson at home. I am just going to worry about beating the bye for now
For what it's worth, we were without our biggest offensive weapon, felt quite a few points on the board, and Boston college gave Clemson fits up into the 4th quarter
I'm not sure what game you watched, but the outcome was never in doubt, after our 2nd possession. The D gave up 180 yds and 3 pts, through 3 quarters. Did they score a cheap TD, when we went to soft coverage and they executed some trick plays? Yep. But "barely beat" isn't close to what happened in that game.
About halfway through the 3rd quarter I could have sworn beamer and ocainstinespring were calling the plays. We were playing to not loose as opposed to playing to win at least in my drunken hazy recollection. Will retract if the experts (ie french) say otherwise.
Like Fuente says lets go 1-0 this week and when the seasons done we can talk I'm more worried about Miami and GT away
We don't play this week.
BYE can be a tough opponent.
Or, how about we talk about whatever we want whenever we want.

Only one scenario in which a one loss VT team does not get into that CFP...
VT beats NC State in ACCCG. That leaves VT 12-1, NCST at 11-2, and Klempson at 11-1. There is a chance the CFP takes Klempson over VT, especially if their loss to NCST is a close one.
But if we go 12-1, it would be hard to leave us out, especially if we beat a Top 10 Miami team in Nov. and win the ACCCG.
Or pretty much any scenario where Alabama/Georgia, Washington/Wazzou, Penn State/Wisconsin, and TCU all end up 13-0, regardless of what happens on the way to us becoming 12-1. Highly unlikely, but still possible.
Yeah if you think about the intent of the article I think they are unfortunately correct. A one loss VT (even with ACCCG win over Clemson) would likely finish behind the teams listed if they finished with 1 loss. However if a P5 conference doesn't have one of these teams as a 1 loss conference champion I would expect a 1 loss VT to have an excellent shot at getting in. I would be nervous if Georgia's only loss came in the SECCG, Alabama's only loss was to Auburn, or Penn State's only loss was to OSU or UM.
I think it all depends on who we beat in the hypothetical scenario. If we get our revenge on a 12-0 Clemson, and Miami is still sticking around at 10-2 or 11-1, I think we would get into the playoff ahead of a 1-loss champion from either the Pac-12 or the Big XII (except Oklahoma, due to their aOSU win). Though you're right, a 1-loss Georgia or Bama (to either Auburn or Georgia) would be worrisome if the SECCG winner had up to 1 loss as well. I'd be a little less worried about a 1-loss non-champion Penn State, but they would certainly be in contention.
