Walking Dead Season 8 (Spoilers)

Haven't seen a topic for the latest season so I thought I would get it started. With the Season 8 Premier this past Sunday what are everyone's thoughts?

Generally these threads only discuss the show and in this context "spoilers" means "we talk about everything immediately." General reference to comic stuff might be OK but don't give away any big plot points.

I thought the premiere was boring honestly. Like, why not just light up Negan when he walks out the door? I really don't understand the plan at all. Great job bringing that herd it, but seriously getting rid of Negan is priority 1

I'm caught in this weird place right now where watching each week feels more like a "have to" than a "want to", considering how much time I've spent watching this show

Seriously just use one of the illogical fully automatic guns they have just found lying around and lay waste to the that whole platform. Instead we get a good guy and then bad guy James Bond style speech.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Exactly, kept running through my mind! Could have wrapped up the series right there.

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. " Rocky B.

My exact feelings. To a T.

I do still think Negan is the most entertaining bad guy they've ever had though

Yes, it's hard to to Negan as a bad guy.

Both his twisted logic and the way he smiles just when he says some truly entertaining, but demented stuff.

They are severally out numbered by the Saviors. Their strength is in size. They surrounded their living quarters with them inside, with walkers, and no one will be able to escape with a herd that size. They will eventually run out of supplies, because they steal them from other communities.

Understand now?

I think this is understood but poorly adapted on screen. They picked off the two spotters on the roof in single shot each, yet a group of them can't hit Negan on the platform or ground. Instead you see them shoot all the windows and Rick spray and pray through countless bullets at Negan hitting him exactly zero times, all to prove the point that Rick is truly thinking about the group and not just his pride. That was extremely poor storytelling.

If in the shows adaption of that scene, had they simply just killed Negan right there and then. They would have had to hold off the Savior for very short time until the herd arrived to cover their ass.

You have the correct point but the show did a pisspoor job demostrating it.

Anyway, while it's a significant gripe it was my only gripe.

I understand that to a point.

But, my counterpoint is that their entire operation is somewhat held together by a complete and total fear of Negan himself.

As Rick even said, they don't want to kill every Savior. With him gone, I see a realistic scenario where sure you have to fight a portion of the Saviors, but I doubt seriously ALL of them (or even a majority) would continue being awful without the fear there to drive them to it.

Hear. Hear. Especially on the "have to." However, that obligation grows weaker with each passing silly episode...and I'm an OG fan. Watched the premiere on Halloween night many moons ago.

Automatic rifle > baseball bat.

"Shitting pants". Really... REALLY???

Leonard. Duh.

The neutered Neagan by butting him on cable TV. This show would be so much more fun on HBO.

The character would definitely have a wider lexicon to draw from, that's for sure. If they had put it on HBO, I would hope they wouldn't have casted this guy. I imagine there are other actors out there that could let the "fucks" fly a lot more elegantly than this Neagan.

Leonard. Duh.

I imagine in a world where zombie surprises are common, death is abundant and people are evil it's basically "fuck" all day long

Fucking A...

Leonard. Duh.

Call me crazy, but I actually have the exact opposite opinion. I feel like this actor is held back a bit being on AMC. I think he'd be better off if he could go to HBO levels of obscenity. The Governor, I think, was best fit for AMC

I just don't like this guy's style, and his being able to say "What the fucking fuck" probably wouldn't change that for me.

Leonard. Duh.

The Governor was bat shit crazy and practically raped Michone in the comic book. He would have been great on HBO. The AMC version was really not anywhere near the comic character. They also drew his storybook out for a very long-time because they were practically caught up to the comics.

One has to wonder how much brutality an audience wants. HBO already has plenty of gore, rape, and foul language with Game of Thrones. To do both GoT and TWD would probably be a bad investment on their part, because likely one would suffer at the hands of the other.

"Exit light..."

I just say HBO because it's like calling an adhesive bandage a band-aide. One of the many streaming services or other premier pay for channels, certainly could have picked it up.

I mean the only difference would be a ton of f-bombs and a couple sex scenes over all the seasons. Would that really make it better? IT he success of this show has been unprecedented, I don't think being on a premium channel would make it better or net more money.

Yeah. The dude has an AK-47. The other dude has a wooden bat. It would take about 5 lbs of pressure to solve the problem.

"I'm caught in this weird place right now where watching each week feels more like a "have to" than a "want to", considering how much time I've spent watching this show"

This is exactly how I used to feel. I quit the show right after the ending of Season 6. For me at least, the show had become far more irritating, frustrating, and quite often, boring than it was entertaining. I realized that it was better to just move on.

If you find this to be true for you, then there are a million better things on television, and in life, to spend your time on. It is hard to give it up since you have invested so much time, but continuing for that reason alone is a sunk cost fallacy. Just keep telling yourself that you don't have to keep watching. They do not give medals to people who stick it out until the end of a television series, so why purposely subject yourself to unhappiness. Not only that, why taint the good memories you have of the show in earlier seasons? Keep the good memories, but stop making new, bad ones.

I say all this, not to denigrate those that like/love the show. People have different tastes, and that is a good thing. I opened this topic thread mostly out of curiosity because my wife still watches the show and I wanted to see some other opinions. I am happy that some of you can continue to enjoy this show after I have checked out. So take what I have written with no malice intended. It is just that what AZHokie22 typed really struck a chord for me with my history with this show.

I think I stopped watching somewhere in the middle of season 4..for these reasons

I still check up on what's happening compared to the comics from time to time though.

Like I definitely tuned in to watch Glenn die his horrible death.

Curious to see if they continue with the dual timeline/universe from this episode through the entire season.

To echo a point above, its definitely a "have to" not a "want to" at this stage in the show.

Some parts are still cool - I appreciated the strategy around knocking off all of the sentries but going out there to talk to Negan was just stupid. Shoot him in the head and give me an hour of my Sundays back.

Assassination in this world would be all too easy. Its one of many fallacies to the story. But, it is a show about zombies so I would think it would be easy to relax on the technicalities if you are into the genre to begin with.

This show is still on tv?

Danny is always open

Maybe not for long. Premiere ratings were down 40% vs the season 7 premiere.

What was the point of using their precious ammunition for shooting out all the windows, again?

I didn't quite get the point of all of that.

If the whole point was just to release a bunch of walking dead into the Negan camp, they could have done that with a lot less ammunition and risk. I mean it's a great plan, but haven't we seen this strategy before?

I like the show, but the 100th episode < the hype for the 100th episode.

I never read the comic, so I don't know what's going to happen next.

I did enjoy the Weird Al "Another one rides the Bus" song choice, even if I don't quite grasp the significance of those flash-scenes yet. Does Rick have pink eye, or was that filmed on a really long day?

The whole shooting out all of the windows part didn't make any sense to me either. I could understand if they were low enough where walkers could access them, but walkers aren't getting anywhere close to those 5th story windows.

Would be pretty cold in the winter.

Also, they'll get wet when it rains?

Shot the windows out to make more noise for the heard of walkers to follow.

You mean as opposed to the sound of the gunshots?

Still a waste of bullets. Could have just brought some speakers and a stereo, or explode one car.

Not knocking your answer, as that probably was the strategy.

This show is done. Last nights episode made literally no sense. Either the writers/producers are being intentionally confusing as to whats going on (if so, they are pulling it off). I mean the context and locations for a lot of the stuff going on just seemed so unconnected.

I just get the distinct feeling they just aren't sure what they are doing at this point.

Finally got to watch it last night after finishing stranger things. Definitely a disappointing episode and too artsy with all the various up close face shots. Where did Jesus get this new found feeling of not wanting to kill and eradicate the saviors completely? Did Morgan just drop to the ground leaving the other two guys to get shot?

Yeah, it all seems a lot more drawn out and confusing than it needed to be.

Rules of engagement (like how to handle prisoners) should have been a decision made up front. Individuals can't be trying to figure that kind of stuff out on the fly, and creating animosity with each other over it.

Also, they wasted all sorts of ammo blowing out windows in the first episode, only to be dependent on some kind of weapons stash that may or may not really be there? What about all the weapons/ammo of the captured folks and dead?

And shouldn't a major (or maybe only) objective be eliminating the leadership? I don't mind using the walkers as part of the strategy, but the job has to be finished.

So far, two relatively slow and wasted episodes in this season. If they're out of content, just end it.

I agree about the show and haven't been crazy about the last two episodes, but...

Morgan said the rules according to Rick were to kill them all.

I think the urgency around finding the weapons cache is more about getting them before Saviors could use them to free Negan from the zombie herd.

I think the Morales "return" is a good example of how frustrating the show is. They bring back a character that almost nobody remembers and will inevitably spend 2 episodes showing his backstory.

They are also heavy weapons not just normal small arms. Think .50 cal machine guns, rocket launchers etc.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Ok, that makes more sense. Other than the fact that you'd think Negan would be all over that given the situation.

Instead of continuing to highjack the Stranger Things thread

CONTEXT LINK

Gotcha, I see where you're coming from, and they certainly have the viewership to keep it going. My personal preference would be that they just have Negan be the Final Boss and end the show in a big way after this season. Ultimately, the comic book readers will continue to read the comics because why wouldn't they, but show-only viewers like myself could get the resolution we've already waited so long for.
