This seems like a fun exercise. How would you build your ideal head coach?
Interesting question by someone on the site. Build your ideal coach. Each category scaled 0-5 (worst-best). You have 15 points.-Recruiting (e.g. 0 pts through 5 pts)-Development-In game coaching-CharacterHow do you spend those 15 points?โ Justin Rowland (@RowlandRIVALS) November 9, 2017
Provide your 15-point distribution and rational for allocation.

Get elite talent and gameplan to your strengths. I would be willing to give a few points in development and character areas.
I'm pretty much with you on this with only one small tweak.

If you have the talent and know how to coach then development could take a bit of a back seat.

I mean it's easy to say 5s across the board, so tried to be more realistic.
Let's try this by the rules

I've watched a lot of "great" coaches with great recruiting classes not adjust in game or develop players to not want someone who can do that.
I think your math class is being taught by a UNC grad...
If you arent cheating you aren't trying.
I think your math is off for the 15 total points...
You only get 15 points Fireman, not 18!
What's the NCAA going to do to my coach if he has those extra points?
Make sure the students have those points too? I dont know.

My thinking here - Head coaches and coordinators should be focused on the big picture. Get the best players possible and out scheme the shit out of your opponent on game day. And let your position coaches develop the hell out of the kids to have them ready for game days. But most importantly, everyone on staff is of excellent character and they all can recruit their asses off.
Came to post this but thought I'd check the comments first. I agree 100%.
That's kinda cheating.
Think of it more of the program than the coach then. The point of the exercise is to say "I'll give up a point of development for recruiting" or whatever.
4.5 - Recruiting
4.5 - Development
These two go hand in hand. Not too many coaches out there can recruit at a high level while also polishing those players into true stars and leaders of the program.
4 - In game coaching
Gotta be able to win the games on the field or you just turn into TimeCop or Al Golden
2 - Character
I debated giving this one a 1, but I assume that's reserved for the Briles' and Petrinos of the world. As long as the character isn't breaking rules, guys like Saban and Harbaugh have proven that you don't need to be a ray of sunshine in order to succeed.

Hire coordinators to do the in-game coaching. I'd want higher character so I don't hate or feel gross about my teams coach, but I'd prefer winning at some point

Like some others have said, development isn't as important if the talent is Elite. For example, I could probably be Clemson's Dline coach and they'd probably still do pretty well.

If you can develop, the recruits will come. If you can coach in game, and win games as a result, recruits will come. I spent what was left on character... just be a good person. Problem solved.
Recruiting (4) - we all know good 'curtin' and the ability to land 5* blue chippers is an important, if not the most important, aspect of winning consistently in college football.
Development (4) - I think tantamount to recruiting well is the ability to develop a players skill set. It's important not only to build on a talented players abilities but to also identify weak spots and improve those as well. Additionally, developing every player, not just those that are blessed with athletic ability, will build a solid team all around.
In game coaching (3) - Assuming coach has recruited well and developed players during off-season and in-season practice, schemed well during practice, and focused his players on the task (1-0) in game coaching shouldn't be a problem. Only mild adjustments should be necessary at this point.
Character (4) - I'd like a coach that seems like he'd be a solid dude to talk with off the field. Personally, I think a coach's character plays a very important role in recruiting. Being a solid person all around can have a profound effect on your players, staff, and surrounding community - that breeds great team chemistry and ultimately success. If the current fan base and alumni believe in what you're preaching, they're more likely to donate to scholarship programs and/or the school in general. Overall, a head coach should show leadership, integrity, discipline, and the ability to relax and allow 18-23 year olds to be 18-23 year olds (within reason of course).
Recruiting - 5
Every team to win CFP/BCS national championship has had at least one top 10 recruiting class in the 4 years before their title run. All teams except the 2000 OU Sooners have had at least 2. Recruiting matters.
Development - 2
Head coach doesn't need to develop players. That responsibility can be delegated to coordinators.
In game coaching - 5
You can't win a national championship with a coach who is unable to adjust, or unable to manage the clock. This is a must.
Character - 3
Maybe I'm a cynic, but I don't think there's any coach in P5 football who doesn't have somewhat flexible morals. The whole system is corrupt, and feeds off existing socio-economic issues. As long our kids aren't criminals, don't abuse/harass women, and don't take completely fake classes, I don't care if they get a few hundred under the table, or if their teachers grade them more leniently than regular students.
Not sure how I would do this but it seems to me that our own CJF is already at like 16-18 points...

Character actually aids recruiting, and if you have a good recruiter who can develop talent, leave most of the in-game coaching to your assistants and coordinators.
All negatives... I like your style.
how can you win if you don't start from zero
Curious: How would you all rate Fuente/Beamer/others using the same rules and criteria?

I think in game coaching could be a three just because of his innovations in special teams early in his VT tenure.
Beamer found the "special teams" wrinkle that helped put our program in the top 25, so that does need to be accounted for.

I think his 'In Game' and Character are probably what stands out the most as being top notch. Recruiting and Development seems to be at least average, hard to say where he really stands without at least a few years to see how things pan out.
i would think with what he's done with QB's, Development is clearly his 2nd biggest strength.

For a Head Coach, this would be ideal. Character is important as it is the face of the program, and certainly can lead to hiring excellent coordinators / position coaches that can fill in the Development role.

BUTCH JONES CHAMPIONS OF LIFE BABY!
I think you need a balance of the first 3 categories, while you can get away with "character" being bad so long as it's not so bad that wreck your motorcycle with your mistress on your back. Like what would an example of a coach with a 2 at character look like?
Also part of me thinks that recruiting is much more about circumstance surrounding the school, rather than something the coach can control. And being good at the other parts of coaching leads to a good reputation, which probably leads to better recruiting. It's all kind of interconnected.
