Is it just me or is the quality of sports media getting worse year by year?
It seems every game has at least one analyst who can't seem to read a roster card or even learn to pronounce the name of a team. I get it. Almost no one on TV is going to say Motuapuaka correctly, but not being able to say Hokie? Seriously?
As if the talking isn't bad enough I discovered this little gem while starting to rewatch the UVA game:

I long for the days when they just simply called us Virginia. At least that was half right.

Meh... Is that really such a big deal? Those are pre-made graphics and it's fairly understandable that "R" could accidentally be typed.
Would you accept being given zero margin for error in your own work? No way.
If my work was to be seen by potentially millions, I'd at least try to get crucial details right..
I admit I have a bit of a pet peeve about misspellings (mis-typings?) like this, and it's not just ESPN either. The TV news stations have become considerably worse over the years with their copy-editing.
Like I said, could have been a simple mistyping. The person that created it could have thought they had actually written QB instead of RB. It happens. And there is no way of knowing whether this is some lazy asshole or someone that is severely underpaid, yet overworked intern that just had a mental lapse.
The greater point here is whether it is really worthy of the ire. Is it really such a big deal to grasp at a detail without context and inflate its meaning to something greater?
I agree ESPN is on the downslope, has been since "rumblin, stumblin" wasn't heard in the highlights recaps, but is this really something worthy to get upset about?
There's no greater meaning and I'm not upset. Are you? Is anybody on this thread? It's almost funny.
The quality is low. Television is produced; this isn't a 12 year old standing up in front of their class with a hand drawn graphic for show and tell. Millions of dollars are spent on production and there is a whole crew that is involved in writing copy and editing. The point is that if you are producing a graphic to take up 1/3 of the screen at least get the details right. The cost of doing so is minimal.
sorry, I guess I am reading this wrong. It read to me that you were upset about it, which ironically is the greater point. No reason for the ire without context. Mistakes happen. Like me misunderstanding your tone here.

I guess it's partly phrasing and partly why this is a thing at all. when I read: "another media fail"; "seriously?"; "As if the talking isn't bad enough"; "Do they not have access to Wikipedia or do they just not care?"; " is readily accessible to anyone"; "long for the days when they just simply called us Virginia". It all just reads like hyperbole to me. Making a mountain out of a molehill, and less about making fun of it in a humorous way. That's just my opinion.
Of course, like my point above, it is all without context so I could take that completely different than your intention. Which as you say I did.

It's not a matter of worse from my perspective just indicative of how bad they have gotten. At least back then they would get the names of players right. Well... I mean there was "Drunkenmiller" but okay...
To be fair, that is pretty much how everyone pronounced it while he was at VT.

This seems to be indicative of the decline of ESPN as a serious sports network. Camera angles, cameras actually tracking the play, commentators doing fluff discussions on in stadium food and the absurd chains that each crew shows off, etc have been horrible, this year and lead to a decline in the quality of their product. ESPN seems to be more interested in taking a side on social issues. ESPN is an important outlet, in the discussion, but they've jumped the shark more than once. I have to wonder how much of the decline in quality has to do with the lay offs that have occurred, due to ESPN's financial decline
I'd love to see Fox Sports or CBS Sports make a serious push and take their position.

I couldn't stand where I kept hearing the UVA announcer so well and loud on the broadcast. Was that an ESPN production problem or something beyond their control? You can sometimes hear the announcer slightly over the broadcast but nothing like that game have I ever heard it that loud.
I've noticed this year that sometimes the crowd noise drowns out the commentators. Apparently they fired all their sound guys along with all the on-air talent.
