Latest news says that Mike Gundy is pondering the Tennessee dumpster fire. If he goes, is OK State a threat for Fuente?
[ mod edit: preserved original content and intent of the forum topic, please keep this updated as intended ]

Comments
I'm disappointed that you didn't put a dumpster fire next to Tennessee.
I think they dumpster fire is implied...
Who among us doesn't know that it's implied?
While I don't disagree that it's implied and even common knowledge, my comment was focused on the pure entertainment value, of actually having a dumpster on fire, next to Tennessee.
We were just trying to be funny...
Tennessee has definitely earned their dumpster fire gif. Think of it more like an invisible tattoo.
Stewart Mandel is tweeting rumors that ASU is looking at Herm Edwards. Over the weekend rumors had them hiring Sumlin.
I saw the Sumlin rumors as well. Per Adam Schefter, Herm has an interview with ASU in the next few days.
Checked in on our Hoo friends at le sabre and in response to someone saying Fuente could go to OKst, they explored the possibly of us hiring Mike Houston from JMU, someone replied.....
At this point I don't know who has a higher football IQ, their fan base or their football team?
You know what's lower. The number of fans at their spring festival
You know what's even lower, the number of points scored against us!
All I know is I hope another ACC school doesn't hire coach Houston from JMU. I'm not suggesting that he is an upgrade over Fuente, but he is a heck of a coach.
Looking into my own Crystal Ball, I don't see Fuente going anywhere. BUT, I do see him getting a sweet new contract extension.
I think you can move Beaty off the hot seat since they've said he's coming back next season.
Odom is firmly off too, Missouri has been on fire the past 6 games (ironically, a team being on fire makes the coache's seat ice cold, go figure)
Montgomery is off as well. His AD is telling radio how good they are going to do next year. Also, two years is not enough to give a coach at a job.
Second law of thermodynamics?
First law maybe? Where you going for conservation of energy? Second law is more like the direction of transfer. Heat transfer is always from hot to cold. But maybe that's what you meant?
Reporting for duty! You kind of went to the wrong school if you were hoping to avoid us. π
Yep, precisely heat transfer.
Thank you for making this thread. The last one was getting a bit unwieldy
All of the things I've been reading about Jimbo and TAM are saying that some sort of announcement will be made Thursday after their board of regents meets. Likely just a rumor but crazy interesting if it all plays out
If he were to head off to College Station, that will make our Week 1 2018 game against them very interesting, and potentially more winnable against a new head coach. Couple that with not having to play Clemson, plus having Georgia Tech and Miami at home, that's a pretty favorable schedule for the Hokies.
side note: first I've seen your name... I was in Vawter in '07, 271 I believe
271 was my freshman year room....in 1980, though. Great room. Did you have to triple?
269 in 2001 for me.
I was in 263 for three years following freshman year in 271. I loved being in the dorm....therapy has resolved most of those issues, though.
Hokie13 do this thread justice please. Keep it up to date.
I should have just sent you a message begging for you to create it.. you are way better at this, but i will do my best.
Looks like Gundy is staying in Stillwater.

Every time a coach turns down the UT job an angel gets its wings.
There have been a lot of angels getting wings these last couple of days.
One question: where in the fuuuuuck were they gonna find $7 million this year to pay him?
The mullet turning down that dumpster fire job offer like

Apparently Dumpster Fire > $$$
Absolutely true and on point. Being a head coach is like being a business owner or corporate executive. Part of what you are being measured on is your decision making. I would venture to say that all eyes are on UT right now and if you want to be known as a good decision maker this is not the job for an established HC because even with the money the risks are high. I could see this being a "brilliant" move for a non P5 coach. It could be viewed as a "trial by fire" first run. Even moderate success would prove value at this point. I would think established HC's should know better.
Agreed, Tenn's problem is they only want to hire an established P5 coach. Good luck with that...
Is it just me or is Mike Gundy slowly morphing into George Hamilton?
There's this thing, Mike. Sunscreen.

Joe Morehead OC at PSU going to Miss St.
Brett McMurphy... unemployed, breaking news for the fun of it!
But seriously, get that man a job.
He's doing bowl projections for TheScore, not sure how much that earns him. I just can't imagine that he's not at least self employed, but I'm not sure how breaking news earns him any revenue.
Penn State and James Franklin gonna crash and burn real fast.
Maybe, they've done really well recruiting. Of course, they're going to have to replace Saquon.
Lol Tennessee can't even bribe someone to be their head coach
At this point, just promote from within and end the embarrassment
I don't see any experienced outsider going to TN as long as the AD is still there. The Schiano affair is one for the ages and rally makes the administration look incompetant,
Ah, somebody will take their money.
But between their fans' ridiculous expectations, their boosters manipulating their AD behind the scenes, and general indecisiveness, their capacity for nonsense is a big negative.
sorry, someone beat me to the joke below.
At what point is Brady Hoke the best they can do? We're close, right?
Charlie Weis is probably pretty bored. He might do it for free with all that ND and Kansas money he's sitting on.
He's got to be almost finished with this phase of his getting-paid-not-to-coach career. Maybe he's ready to go back to work now to set up Phase 2?
I think we're there. It's going to have to be an insider at this point.
What makes you think Hoke wants the job?
Kinda sorta /s
Maybe not. EDSBS had an interesting column yesterday exploring the options (in their typical tongue-in-cheek way) for Tennessee and came to a conclusion I hadn't considered, which might actually make sense. I won't spoil the ending for those who want to enjoy the suspense, though.
Top Candidates for the Tennessee Job
wow, that was brilliant, i hope they hire him
Man, I don't think they could get Smokey to take the HC gig right now.
Maybe they'll hire that turnover trash can!
Norval has to be the guy. In Memphis, knows how to recruit the area and can win big games, and he will be cheap.
With ASU job open, its possible he goes there, but he makes a ton of sense at Tennessee.
Norval has won with Fuente's team - has not proven that he can rebuild a program. IMO best case for UT is
Cutcliffe, withTee Martinas OC/Coach in waiting. It's kind of impressive how their fanbase has united against Schiano/AD. If someone with Tennessee ties can come in and say 'I empathize with you, I'm a fan here too' the fan base will give them their full, united support (for at least one entire season, which is more than most coaches get at UT).
Cutcliffe already turned them down
Wow, missed that report
Cutcliffe Turned Down Tennessee
That is brutal. Where do they turn too for real. I think the coaches know the amount of pressure to win right away will be there.
And they've already had guys in the Athletic Department go on record to say that Tee Martin isn't qualified enough to be a candidate
That was a bad move. Tee is probably the only remotely qualified guy they can likely land at this point.
The Tennessee Athletic Department is rapidly approaching territory where they don't get to pick and choose who is qualified enough based on their HC experience.
They're already there after the Schiano clusterfuck. The problem is they're too arrogant to see it.
The ones not on public record that don't want Tee Martin as coach include the QB that started for UT the years before Martin did. No idea why he's stonewalling Tee, but that's what's coming out of Knoxville today.
Tee has never been a head coach. Or even considered for that matter. Bringing him in just because he's an alum would be a mistake.
Can't be a worse mistake than any of the other ones the Tennesse athletic department has made this week.
More coaches have turned down the Tenn job than UVA had fans at its spring game
A few more refuse to volunteer for dumpster duty and that number will be more than the UVA fans that stayed for the fourth quarter Saturday.
Per Adam Schefter, Herm Edwards (wut) is interviewing for the Arizona State job
AZ State will be taking the Tennessee route. They are hiring, but must keep assistants. Maybe that is why Herm is being interviewed?
Sun Devils might be the most questionable firing of the year. Todd Graham wasn't great, but he was getting them bowl games with occasional 9/10-win seasons. His biggest flaw was that he was too good at hiring coordinators and they all got poached. If they were actually getting Sumlin it would make sense, but it seems like they might be in trouble now.
I'm really interested to see where Bielema ends up. I know we had that awkward rule thing with him in the Belk Bowl but I can't help but like the guy. I mean he thanked Arkansas on twitter after getting fired.
Somebody might get a pretty sweet deal if they can get him on the cheap.
I don't think a picture from the profile angle would be doing Bert any favors.
Signed --Also a Fat Guy
(running right past your profile joke)
If you look like Bret and you have a wife like he does and a cute kid, I think that making them your profile pic is definitely the way to go.
Bill Conelly has interesting comments on Bret Bielema - essentially, successful coaches don't just 'forget' how to coach in 3 years; typically their put in a bad environment - whether that be limited funding for assistants, micromanagement from the AD, etc. I think Burt will be successful in the right place, probably somewhere in the midwest.
I don't know if anyone saw his commentary after he was fired, but he came through as a class act who enjoyed his time at Arkansas, and didn't have a bad thing to say about it.
He also pointed out that his daughter was born there, so it would always be a special place for him. Someone was definitely cutting the onions...
I know the softball coach at Arkansas and she said he's a super nice guy.
It's the only way guys that look like Bert and myself score hot wives. And having a fat bank account helps, so I've heard.
I think you're underestimating the SEC's penchant for recycling expired coaches. I'd be surprised if Bret doesn't end up somewhere else in the conference, at least in a coordinator role.
Bret could end up in Illinois or ASU, and I could see him being successful. His brand of football would translate well in either place.
I'm not sure anyone can be successful in Illinois, and I just don't see Bret's brand of Neanderball working well in the Pac-12.
Stanford has been pretty successful with a ground and pound offense, even when Oregon was humming on all cylinders.
That's a fair point. Not sure how I forgot about Stanford. Are there enough of the right kind of players on the west coast to support 2 teams playing that brand of football, though? Stanford has a bit more national cache to attract players from all over the country. Are year-round sunshine and nationally renowned coeds enough to expand ASU's recruiting footprint to rival Stanford's? It's an interesting thought experiment.
The teams in the PAC 12 live and die by recruiting California, mostly LA. ASU is not far at all from LA, just a 6 hr. drive. I guarantee that their team is full of CA and AZ players.
But can you play Stanford-style football with the kind of recruits that ASU can pluck from CA and AZ? Stanford doesn't seem to think so. They're the notable exception to the "recruit Cali" rule. A quick look at their roster shows 35 players from CA/AZ, 15 from the rest of the Pac12 footprint and 51 from elsewhere. (The numbers change slightly to 35/17/49 if you include Idaho and Nevada in that "footprint". Nearly half of their team is from east of the Rockies. I have my doubts that ASU can replicate the national recruiting success of Stanford.
ASU is the #1 party school in the nation, so they have that going for them.
There can be a lot of value in moving against the grain from the rest of your conference. No guarantee that it works, but it definitely has some potential. Utah has been able to grind out 9 wins a year consistently (and this year when they finally went hurry up spread, they faltered a bit)
Reports per Bruce Feldman say that SMU's Chad Morris is the next to be sought after by Tennessee.
Link but on mobile sorry
The list is now getting shorter on people they HAVEN'T expressed an interest in.
Not a terrible choice.
IF Fuente was to go anywhere, I would love to see what Chad could do for us. I don't know much about his recruiting prowess or anything like that, but the guy can put some offense on the field.
Judging from the reactions I saw on Twitter about this last night, you're going to see a lot of backlash about this one if he's hired. Once again, not qualified enough, not enough of a flashy name, etc.
I want to see Tennessee fans flip a shit over the second hire and run them off too.
Twitter is ablaze with #bringTeehome. No love at all for Chad Morris. I don't know anyone who would take the AD position if Currie left at this point
#Nobody'sGoodEnough
I hope so. I think Morris would be a great hire.
The interesting thing as well is that pretty much all of the current students weren't alive the last time Tennessee was relevant in football.
Wait, do we want them to get a good hire?
I'm sort of enjoying the shadenfreude.
ha ha ha....no that was what my first comment of "I hope so" was in regards to. The post I was replying to said he hopes the fans flip out on their next hire and run them off too. So if they hired Morris and fans flipped out and Morris and UT were like nevermind.
but I do think that would be a good hire for any team really.
He would have been a great hire even before all this. Considering their current situation, he'd be a home run.
Sample Conversation Between Agent to Assistant Coach at XYZ University:
Is Fulmer still alive? Might be their only option...
The article also mentions the following...
Head coaches and Tennessee are like pitchers and the Orioles.
If they're breathing and can move, they're probably interested.
I nominate HokieGirl for Tennessee head coach. If there's anyone that can give their fans what they deserve with a cackling laugh, it's her.
Apparently Chad Morris told Tennessee to go pound sand, so Jeff Brohm is now the man. VolNation says a deal is being hammered out as I type. How great would it be if Brohm Beamered Tennessee to get a raise from Purdue and decides to stay in West Lafayette?
*raises ha-*
*phone buzzes*
*lowers hand*
This Jimbo to A&M thing is picking up. The question is, is this another LSU rumor or real?
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't get that at all. Why is aTm a better job than FSU? I know FSU had a down year, but this is just weird.
Having idiots yell at you from the stands might be preferable to a member of the board calling you out on Facebook.
Probably, I really just wanted a reason to post one of my favorite moments of this season
$30 million different in athletic dept revenue.
Along with the corresponding headaches.
Pain > Gain
SEC, Texas, budget, higher salary, new slate. The scuttlebutt is that FSU admin wont shell out big money for OC/DC platoons, upping assistants salaries and upping Support staff, while they have nice facilities they don't play keeping up with the Joneses and have newest and best.
I was listening to some of the talking heads on the ESPN Campus Conversation Podcast last night, they said the FSU facilities are pretty dated compared to most other big programs, including A&M.
Looks like FSU is already doing their homework on potential coaches. They are looking at Taggert from Oregon to possibly replace Jimmmmmbo
Dan Wolken Twitter
Looks like Oregon is offering Taggert more money as a result.

Live look at coaches fighting over who's going to accept the Tennessee job
Hey Tennessee, gimme a call, I'll coach you next year, I'll even do it for the bargain salary of $2 mil. Experience? Well yeah, I mean I played 2 years of high school football 18 years ago. But really, do you think you're going to get anyone better?
You beat me to it! Except I have NO football experience.
ill throw my hat in for 1 mil a year
I'll go $500k.
Edit: Actually, I'd do it for free just for the chance to intentionally throw gasoline on the dumpster fire that is UT football.
I was gonna undercut this even more. I'd take one dollar a year, 5 years minimum, but buyout is 2 million per year. Win-win. Either I get to destroy the program beyond repair and get enough money for a celebratory beer at the end, or I get to tank them for a year or so, and then they pay me a lot more to go away.
updated that Joe Moorhead is now official at Mississippi State.
Good luck with that
JustinJonathan Smith, former star QB.I hate Clay Travis, but if this is true, it brings me so much happiness.
It just keeps getting better
*Benny Hill Chase Theme Playing*
Haha, every time we think it's over UT's like...
This has been flat denied by a few different sources now, and that talks with Brohm aren't that far along. Turns out Clay Travis is bad at journalism. Who knew!
Omg this is too good to be true
Edit: Darn, above beat me to it :(
What drink would you like?
A double?
Once that OK State job was still filled, I honestly stopped caring about any of this. I don't see Coach Fu leaving for any other program other than one that resides in the state of OK. The news of Gundy earlier this week had my heart racing a little bit. Now I'm like whatever, they could put Joe Gibbs in one of these positions for all I care, as long as you leave our rebuild project alone I'm good to go.
Is anyone else hearing these Fuente to FSU talk? I do not have a printable source
I saw a sketchy tweet earlier about them pre-screening Taggart and Fuente but, like I said, it didn't look like it was from a reputable account.
That's an open job that would make me nervous.
For all those interested, there might be something to those rumors:
SB Nation - FSU Site Article
It sounds like if FSU does need/want to replace Jimbo Fisher, then their two main candidates are Taggart and Fuente.
Ugh can you imagine kicking off next season against Fuente.
No, and I just don't want to, but I hope Whit is keeping track of the situation.
Well, FSU already steals all of our recruits. Now I guess our coach.
*ducks*
Taggart coaches Oregon. So Fuente is not going to leave for FSU...I see what you did there fella.
but reading through those comments nobody really thinks Fuente leaves what he has at Blacksburg....I don't either.
They also named James Franklin....do you think Franklin leaves PSU for FSU?? I don't. Most likely names I think are Frost, Babers was an interesting one as well, and Taggert.
That may be the case, but the the article has just been updated and it does look like Jimbo may well be on his way out of FSU. Per the article, the top two choices are still Taggart and Fuente.
Yeah and when I was getting married my top two choices were my current wife and Pink. Just saying...
Recced for going with Pink (ahem, P!nk) there, that's a badass way to go.
They may gauge fuente to see his interest but I highly doubt he leaves Blacksburg.
Babers? Can you imagine th FSU fans' reactions if they hire a guy who is 8-16 (4-12 in ACC)? Yeah he's had some big wins and Syracuse is of course going to stay the course for now but it seems he still has a lot to prove at the P5 level.
Could they be firing both Scottie and their Basketball coach in the same presser?
Maybe Compher is getting the boot for firing Ruffin a few years ago. That has been a disaster for their program.
Any chance they are hiring Ruffin back?
Jeff Lebo, ECU basketball coach resigns
Anyone else want to see a 30 for 30 on Tennessee's dumpster fire of a week?
"What if I told you one college football program had a job that no one wanted. ESPN's 30 for 30 Presents: No Volunteers: The Story of the 2017 Tennessee Head Coaching Search."
That's good, but nobody was ever going to volunteer for that job.
That's a job that requires a premium pay.
At this point a 30 for 30 for this whole coaching carousel is the play. All it of it's a chess game.
Although some schools are playing checkers.
And others a playing the game of Redneck Life, in an attempt to regain their championship.
Tennessee's coaching search so far, summed up.
The warning is very accurate: "Do Not Attempt!"
No one is willing to volunteer to be the new Tennessee head coach?
Don't you think?
I HATE this song because it contains precisely zero irony.
Ironic, isn't it?
I don't really think.
I hate it because it contains precisely one Alanis Morissette
I've got to believe that if it included more than one it would be worse.
I kinda like Alanis, if not her music. She does some funky things in a movie theater.
Tennessee now has Dave Doeren as their top target.
Yes please. I know I know he hasnt killed it at NCST but we dont play them every year so I care about how he recruits.
Tee Martin will get that job before Dave Doeren. Dave's name is only popping up to get leverage on a contract extension with NC State.
I have no idea who Tee Martin is/
Former UT QB. The guy who won national championship the year after Peyton Manning graduated to NFL stardom.
Anybody else wondering if Schiano is going to be able to get money from UT? He had an offer signed and accepted (by the AD), then rejected.
One would think that it isn't valid until ratified by the people in power.
If that were so, then every contract NOT signed by a CEO could be reneged on by a corporation. The AD has signed plenty of offer letters and contracts and that would be proved before it even actually went to trial.
The AD isn't the CEO of a university, and even CEOs have limits to their contractual authority.
Since the coach makes considerably more than the AD, I can imagine the deal would have to be approved.
If you signed a contract with a VP of a corporation, you might not know that it had to be approved by the CEO because of some internal rules. But it would be reasonable on your part to believe you had a binding agreement. I think the same line of thinking would work here. Schiano will be paid. I don't know that a court will hold that the entire agreement would have to be guaranteed, but I don't think the UT internal rules are binding on the other party.
Found this and if Schiano's MOU was written same way, you would be right.
1) The MOU is described as a "binding and legally enforceable agreement" once fully executed (signed).
Significance: Note first that the MOU must be signed by all relevant parties in order to become binding. In the case of Barnes's MOU, four persons had to sign it: Barnes; vice chancellor and athletic director Dave Hart; chancellor Jimmy Cheek; and treasurer and CFO Butch Peccolo. If Schiano's MOU contained similar requirements, it would not be enforceable unless signed by all of the listed persons.
He's going to sue somebody for libel and win. I doubt that person represents Tennessee, but there it is.
Let's hope FSU get Taggart. Like, really hope
No he isn't.
In order to win such a lawsuit, Schiano would have to prove that someone who made the statements about him knew that they were false and made them anyways. This is exceedingly difficult and in this case would be almost impossible as there is sworn testimony by McQueary stating that Schiano knew about Sandusky.
Off work today, so I watched some of the Finebaum show. Schiano will get something out of this. The memorandum was signed by Currie and Schiano, but not UT's President or any other big wig. While not a strict contract, it does have some binding and non-binding parts. This is all from the guy Finebaum had on to explain.
He went on to say that Schiano will probably sue, and UT will have to pay a settlement (because they want this part of their total dumpster fire to be less ablaze). The reporter estimated that total for Jones's buyout, Schiano settlement, and new coach's contract would be around $50M!
Hey, you know, it's only money, and Tennessee apparently has boosters who don't know what to do with theirs.
I heard Butch and staff were owed in the $11M range and I imagine a new coach would get maybe $20M ($5M for 4 years). I can't possibly believe Schiano will be owed $20M.
Tennessee should have just held a job fair.
Psshhhh.... like anyone would've shown up for it.
As long as Fuente and Foster are still coaching at VT in 2018 then this coaching carousel is off-the-charts awesome
Lane Kiffin is savage.
Kiffin has turned into the top troll on Twitter.
I hate lane kiffin but hot damn he is on fire right now
Kiffin just gets social media. His Twitter game alone is going to get him some big recruits at the next place he goes.
So...if Taggart goes, Oregon is open...to....Yeeezus, this year's carousel is nuts. Fucking nuts.
Pre-emotive Hopefully Fuente doesn't go there ππ
Kanye to Oregon?
No chance. The fallout with Nike means he's an Adidas guy. Any Adidas programs open?
Herm Edwards reportedly hired by ASU according to Yahoo!
Why is nobody after Nick Saban, he has done some good things. A little old though
Maybe this:
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2017/10/which_sec_football_coach_has_...
Who is that one guy from FSU with a buyout $10 mil higher?
B/R Just notified me that three commits have just decommitted and 2 are 4 stars . .......
Where there's smoke there's fire?
decommitted from where?
FSU
gracias.
Meant FSU sorry missed it there
I'm trying to keep track of the folks that the dumpster fire has gone after, and those that have said no.
Greg Schiano
David Cutcliffe
Mike Gundy
Jim Bob Cooter (Don't know if he was officially asked, or just gave a preemptive no.)
Jeff Brohm
Dave Doeren
And then the rumors and wishful thinking:
Jon Gruden
Chip Kelly
Dan Mullen
Jason Witten
Am I missing anyone?
Fuente
Tee Martin in the rumors section?
If its worth anything, I have also said no to the job.
I would have accepted. I have thirty years experience watching college and NFL football. That qualifies me, right?
I've never coached, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Tennessee is being turned down more than an average guy at a middle school dance.
To be fair, Schiano didn't actually say no. He tried to accept the offer then got oveerruled by an angry mob.
And from what I'm reading, Brohm actually said yes, but then the university wouldn't approve the salary that Currie had negotiated with him, leading to him declining the revised offer.
I honestly don't know how UT's athletic department could possibly look more inept, but I'm making some popcorn to enjoy while watching them show me how.
How did their AD get that far into negotiations with Brohm without knowing what his budget was?
My guess would be that it's because he's incompetent, but that's just what I've inferred from the past 72+ hours
Yeah I'm not buying that. Especially since it seems that news was dropped my Clay Travis. If it is true though....boy. That is some horrible administration work.
Probably hadn't yet been informed of the new budget while paying 3 coaches.
It seems like he would have known his budget before he started throwing out offers.
But maybe it was dependent on the candidate, and maybe it needed to be adjusted for the buyout (and potentially the Schiano settlement).
Still, the appropriate parties needed to talk before the offer went out.
pretty sure that report was false
Jets defensive coordinator. Not sure of name, but he played for UT and was high on fans' wish list.
Well, the SEC is certainly doing it's part to bump up the salary of every decent coach in the country.
Updated Montana has hired Bobby Hauck, former coach at the school who was the current special teams coordinator at San Diego State.

Check out the 2nd video for Oregon State new Coach
Has Dave Dorean turned down the job yet? Could FSU turn into a dumpster fire?
Here's what I see.
Does this mean Fuente is going to NCSU? /s
*ducks*
FSU has their pick between Taggart and Strong, possibly others (Fuente being named potential), I highly doubt they'll be Tennessee dumpster fire.
One can still hope.
Strong would be interesting. I don't think he got a fair shake at Texas (but I'm not claiming racism) but if he couldn't handle Texas boosters would FSUs be that different?
FSU has to be better than Texas
I'm not 100% convinced they have their pick of Taggert. Don't forget that Oregon has immense resources thanks to Phil Knight and doesn't have to deal with boosters for facilities upgrades such as those causing tensions at FSU.
They'll got after Taggart for sure. He's a Florida guy IIRC.
I agree they'll go after him. I'm just saying I don't think it's guaranteed that he leaves for FSU because the resources available at Oregon would seemingly prevent Taggert from having to deal with the type of situation presently unfolding at FSU.
Dave Dorean went from Hot Seat to extension thanks to Tennessee, he is 15-25 in ACC play. He loses 9 SR on defense and 3 on Offense(4 if Hines bolts). He will likely get fired next year anyways, do they just want to keep their recruiting class?
He was definitely on the hot seat last year and would've been fired if hadn't beat UNC in the final game and qualified for a bowl.
That 15-25 is a little bit misleading though, considering in the 5 years he's been there, year 1 was a disaster, mainly thanks to Tom O'Brien and they went 0-8. The last 4 years he's had to play every year Clemson, Florida State, and a resurgent Louisville, and the cross over opponent is UNC. The other Coastal Opponents have been 2013 Duke (Coastal Champ), 2014 GT (Coastal Champ), 2015 VT @ Lane at night, and 2016 Miami that finished the year ranked and was 9-4.
Not all 15-25 ACC records are alike, and this one looks pretty damn tough on paper. And they're playing that schedule while in a complete rebuild.
State is becoming a more stable program that is showing better consistency, they are recruiting incredibly well, and the staff has an excellent reputation.
#DEVELOPMENTS
For those wondering... wrestler its running for mayor not Les Miles lol
Ok good. It would be absurd otherwise.
I will admit I am kind of amazed his name hasn't be tossed around more. Les didn't do a bad job at LSU.
Les is actually the first name I've seen thrown out there since the Schiano meltdown that Tennessee fans might be able to stomach.
This from a friend of mine that's a UT fan:
https://twitter.com/Lane_Kiffin/status/936028243177754624
Tennessee fans are yet again threatening to protest, boycott, and get rid of tickets if DD is hired there. They weren't against GS's past at Penn State. It was simply an excuse because they think they deserve a bigger name. Multiple fans on Twitter are trying to tell the others to direct the possible protests at the AD, not DD, but a few of them are arguing that they should direct hatred at him because he entered "a war zone", knowing he isn't wanted.
At this point, I believe Hoke will be their coach next year. Unless Peyton and Phil do some kind of
peachpeace march across Knoxville, I do not think anyone will take the job if Doeren is protested.Well...lol
https://twitter.com/PeteThamel/status/936287369543766016
Doeren staying put.
Edit: spelling Doeren and had peaches on the brain.
Anyone else hoping Larry Fedora's music starts playing just as Hoke is getting handed a contract and beats him with a chair?
Sooo, do we need to start "2017/2018 Coaching Carousel Pt.3"? I mean, we certainly aren't at the end, and we certainly aren't finished being entertained by the dumpster fire in Knoxville.
nope. We're not even halfway to the comment total of part 1. We hold.
via GIPHY
The Last Jedi.
I've heard tale that Sumlin is going to be announced at 2pm for UT /s
This is awesome on 2 levels
First, vLOLs
Second, Doeren at NCSU keeps NCSU from taking the next step.
...pretty decent chance Yow would have screwed up the next hire worse than Doeren, right?
Could you imagine????????????????
that's what 2018 Debbie Yow is for. 2017 Debbie Yow was here to give a coach who manages 8 wins at his peak (with a win over a FSU who was having a historically abysmal year) a raise and extension.
The next couple years is going to see the Triangle immolate itself with football coaching replacements. I'm going to enjoy every second of it.
Disagree, NCST is in an awful position in the Atlantic. DD leaving helps recruiting this year and the future.
Are we up to 9 or 10 now? More like VoLLLLLLLLLLs amirite
Who would have thought the number of losses in the 2017 season would be outgained by the number of coaches who would turn them down.
I'm contemplating walking into my bosses office and telling her I've just recieved a 4 year 40 million dollar offer from Tennessee to see if I can get a nice christmas raise. Its worked so well for everyone else it must really work!
Surprised I haven't even heard ANYONE mention Bob Stoops? I know the dude retired last year for health stuff but we've heard that before from other coaches of elite programs before they unretired to take over a different elite program. He obviously wouldn't stoop to Tennessee (lol get it) but what about FSU if Jimbo goes?
I think Big Game Bob was actually sincere in his decision to retire over health concerns.
What is the best tennesee message board to read? That must be really entertaining right now.
I haven't heard much about kids decommitting...I would think their whole recruiting class would be having serious second-thoughts by now.
Don't do it!
Without a doubt, VolNation is their busiest and most over-the-top right now
We live in a timeline where the head coaches at places like NC State and Purdue are turning down Tennessee.
Reap what you fucking sow.
And Duke and FAU
Lane reportedly has not been offered/contacted/given the opportunity to decline said offer.
I want to see them recruit Bronco Mendenhall.
#EvilJustice
Nope, Mendenhall should stay where he is. I'm enjoying all the toast toasting, basketball practices, spring festivals, Diamond Dallas Page Yoga shenanigans that is keeping UVA in the lower half of the ACC.
Oh, I didn't say he'd take it... Or that Tennessee fans would accept it...
It would worth it just to see LOLUVA give him a raise and extension.
Maybe not BM, but at what point does Tennessee get desperate and give Bobby Wilder a call?
Man was hoping he'd take that Tenn gig so that we could poach some of the NC St recruits away, oh well, still enjoying the circus going on in Knoxville.
Agreed. I think we might have had a real shot at McNeill and Gonzalez. I wouldn't be surprised if Doeren simply entertained their offer just to get a better deal with NC St.
I've decided the most awesome Tennessee scenario is as follows: Everyone turns them down, or their fans revolt. Either way, Tennessee can't make a hire. Desperation sets in. They rehire Butch Jones.
Then when everything looks nearly settled, Butch declines the offer.
At this point I just want to see how far it can go before they just say they aren't having a football team next year.
Or better yet, they say screw it, we're trying a new philosophy in football. No coaches. Let the players run the show. A little SEC Lord of the Flies if you will. It can't turn out much worse than the last couple coaching experiments they've tried.
Tennessee should run the team via Twitter poll.
You mean they aren't already?
So effectively they'd get Lane Kiffin for free.
So... For any Hokie fans that doubted that attractiveness of the VT job... How has TN helped shape those views?
Mmmm that's a bit overly simplistic.
It's like putting two BMWs in front of me - one 840, one 535 - and then lighting the 840 on fire and saying "choose".
The 840 is the better car when it's not on fire.
I love the comparison. But in some ways aren't the top coaches looking at themselves and thinking they are the fireman and the auto mechanic?. Meaning "yeah it's on fire now because I'm not there. But I can put out the fire and rebuild the 840." I don't know, just guessing at how the coach fits in your analogy.
Nah, it sure seems like all these coaches are like
"I'm a mechanic, not a fireman. I can fix a gasket or a hose or a rotor or a transmission. But this car is on fire."
It's not even that. It's like having a pristine condition 535 and an 840 that is a little worse for wear and just caught fire on start-up and you're being asked to be fireman and mechanic, and uhhh... Its scheduled for a Mecum Auction in 2 weeks
Not being a shitshow is somehow not a credit to the school? I'm not sure I get that.
Eh, I'm not sure I understand that sentence.
If I'm reading it right, you're basically giving VT credit for being "not a shitshow". I'd say in response, "just let these other programs bury themselves and VT looks better by simply doing... nothing at all." Tennessee is in flames, so "VT is better because we're NOT a dumpster fire" is unnecessary (and, tbh, isn't exactly a huge feather in our cap!)
I guess I just think all this obviously makes Vol Nation look like a bunch of fools, but their problems don't elevate VT in my eyes. Maybe it's just a philosophical thing, and a strange delineation to make to boot: I'm thrilled that Tennessee football is a mess, but I'm not listing it as a rΓ©sumΓ© credit.
Sure it does. Negatives are negatives. Not have a having a negative is a positive. You're saying that having a shitshow of an administration does not count against you? It most certainly does. Does everyone automatically choose the employer with more prestige and/or more money over the employer with a better reputation and better work environment? No. Coaches aren't aliens. They make decisions very similarly to mortal human beings albeit with more money involved. So yes, if your competitor does something stupid and you do nothing that is in fact a credit to you for not doing something stupid. Look at Enron, Andersen Consulting (which destroyed itself with the Enron fiasco). Both of those companies made their competitors look better without their competitors having to lift a finger.
is there a universe where "not having a negative" is just simply neutral? one of you is arguing in relative terms (hoo boy at least we aren't the dumpster fire that is tennessee) and the other in absolutes ("not a dumpster fire" isn't exactly a resume builder)
Right but it is a resume builder.
never mind you guys got this

It's the first thing I put on my resume.
In bold, 32-sized font, comic sans.
Out of this I hope Fuente is able to get his assistants raises and the new 10th coach is a great hire with a good salary.
How has Tenn not called this guy?? Next Tenn coach
Nowhere is safe!
TEN-NES-SEE-IS-A-SHIT-JOOOOOOOOB
This Tennessee debacle has be fantastic. I hope it runs for a few more weeks. You would think they would have to be targeting Chad Morris now. Maybe Bo Pelini's name will make an appearance soon.
Those would be two great hires IMO
Chad Morris supposedly already turned them down
Sauce? Haven't seen anything on the googles about this.
Miss Sts new coach Joe Moorhead on offense.
Yeah, that. Very impressive.
I'm usually skeptical of coordinator to head coach moves, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was the hire of the offseason. Apparently he negotiated his salary to be lower to pay for assistants, only taking 2.7mil in the SEC west. Could do some big things over there.
I know there's tons of rumors about Tennessee but someone just tweeted that the message boards are talking about Narduzzi π
Fuck Pat Narduzzi
Not a bad fit. A lot of people are pushing off Tennessee these days.
Would give me a reason to hate Tennessee.
FTFY.
I've never really had a reason to hate Tennessee. Granted I'm not from the area, but I can't find a reason to hate them.
Just hang around with their fans for a few hours, especially on game day.
Fans? No, it just takes one. I knew one fan and as soon as he knew I was a Hoke, it was non-stop anti-VT comments. Weak schedule, weak athletes etc... And God help me, if VT lost.
I had moved to LA by the time VT actually played UT and I am always thankful for that. UT fans make you want to hang around Charlottesville.
That would be interesting. As big a douche as he is, I do think he is a good coach who is stuck at a pretty crappy (in terms of resources and support) Pitt program. I think he would actually do very well at Tennessee.
Only thing that would be better is if it was Paul Johnson. #ChopBlockTheSEC
Please make this happen!
According to The Scoop. SCLSU's own Mr. Coach Klein shot down Tennesee. The muddogs will retain him after giving him a raise.
And. Here. We. Go.
Private plane, owned by a Texas A&M donor, is leaving Tallahassee at 4:45 this morning and headed for College Station, TX.
Per Newy Scruggs of Dallas:
"Sources tell @NBCDFWSports that former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is working on a deal to become the next coach at Tennessee. A deal could be announced Friday. I'm working on more details."
Lol it's hard to take these reports seriously at this point.
I dunno...lots of smoke here
Harralson covers Tennessee for Saturday Down South. He also retweeted this one:
And this one just came out:
Wow, yet another reason to hate Tennessee.
Not sure why you hate Leach?
Craig James, is that you?
I've heard first hand from Wazzu players that he's a major dick.
Fair or not fair, he impresses me as someone who doesn't care the game itself or about anyone but himself. As far as I can tell, though, he ran a squeaky-clean program at Washington State. Always pictured him at a southern Florida school, rather than a landlocked state. Will piracy fit in at Tennessee? He'll certainly shake things up with an Air Raid offense.
Here's a tweet that sums up how the Washington State fans feel about it:
not to be dramatic but if mike leach leaves wsu the only bigger betrayal would be judas turning in jesus
He strikes me more as a guy who did one too many marijuanas in the 70s and then realized he was decent enough at coaching football to do it for the rest of his life
Yes. And feels that rules are more like guidelines, Savvy.
Nah. Leach saw the pay raises that Doeren and Gundy got, and decided he wanted some of that. Plus I bet Currie bought lunch.
I'm checking the Tennessee boards to see if there's any potential for another fan revolt, but it looks like they like this choice.
I'm sure they have become much more open-minded as a fanbase. Nobody likes getting spanked as publicly as they have been.
I don't think so. Washington State currently doesn't have an AD. This seems similar to how we got Buzz from Marquette, except our AD is better at doing AD things.
Oh baby, if this is true I hope Leach smack talks every program in the SEC at media days and gives zero fucks along the way. Too bad for Wazzu though, I doubt they'll do any better for a long time.
I'm one of the few here that doesn't hate UT. I've got family that went there. This excites me because Leach is a hilarious dude.
"In the Los Angeles area."
It's like an American Idol tryout but, unfortunately, everyone is singing Rocky Top.
And there is only Mike Leach and Jim Mora Jr.
Leach at UT? Please let this be true. If this happens, I may need help from you guys in figuring out how to get my hands on press passes to SEC media days next year. I want front row seats when Saban's head explodes listening to Leach ramble on for 23 minutes about pirates, crunchy vs smooth peanut butter, and robots for no particular reason.
He would make media days must see tv. Mike Leach is the crazy uncle I never knew I always wanted.
All this makes me appreciate more than ever, how well all parties handled our 2015 hiring process. If that isn't a textbook example on a coaching transition, then nothing is.
Well, this is interesting timing:
So AD search AND Head coach search. This is so amazing.
I agree. This is a complete comedy of errors. The funny thing is the administration signed off on Schiano and are now throwing Currie under the bus for the negative reaction.
Where he failed is not having strong enough conviction to go through with the hire. Him backing out on the contract when the public ridicule came flying in really weakened his position and created the mess they are in now. Yes, he deserves to be canned for this mess.
I thought it was at least partially Schiano's idea not to walk into that shitshow.
Talk about an easy decision to shit can someone.
Under that same tweet there's comments (but no sources) of reports that John Currie has only had certain powers stripped from him.
Edit: Talking about tweet sourced in the article, from Chynna Greene at WVLT:

Live look in at fan reaction in Tennessee.

The dumpster just set the building on fire.
This needs more legs.
Easier to screenshot here.
lol so now even Mike Leach isn't good enough?
Jeez. Currie has been done a favor by being allowed to get the hell out of town. And now to know this was all a plot by Fulmer to essentially force himself into the AD position? Right, because who wants to work for a guy who is as self serving as THAT?
This couldn't have developed into any more perfect disaster than it did. Tennessee is going to be reeling from the past 2 weeks for a very long time to come. They basically just death penaltied themselves.
Hearsay, but per a friend of mine Fulmer isn't fond of Leach because of the stuff that happened with Adam James at Texas Tech. If Fulmer ends up being the AD and this rumor is founded, yeah, I'd say Mike Leach is a "no deal".
You mean the made up/exaggerated stuff with Adam James??? Wow...
Apparently it's been confirmed Currie has been fired, sources say Phillip Fulmer has been sabotaging deals to get Currie fired so he can take over AD spot.
I think at this point even ESPN wants this to keep going so they can watch like
I admit, I was a little disappointed to see that the Leach deal might have been shutting the current circus down. But gotta love Tennessee finding a new twist to keep this drama going a few more days.
This is the thing that will boost the ratings on ESPN, SEC network and every college show they do.
Spaghett!
I swear this is the story that keeps on giving.
Braden GallΓΎVerified account @BradenGall
.@Brett_McMurphy just told us that people inside the Tennessee program were calling coaches who Currie was trying to hire and tell them not to come and that it is toxic.
Apparently that ("it is toxic") is true...
The UT stuff is fucking hilarious. With a new AD, I wonder if they put Kiffin back in the mix. On the Finebaum show yesterday they said Kiffin was interested in the job but Tennessee said they were not.
Reports of Fulmer becoming new UT AD.
Fulmer was Littlefinger this whole time.
hoo boy do i have a plot development for you
Funny, because he looks more like Old Varys.
Oh, and by the way, he's just been made
regentacting AD.So apparently Currie has a buyout of something like 5 million. So you can add that to the Butch's buyout and whatever money could come to Schiano. Oh yeah the athletic dept starts paying the 2.5 million settlement from the sexual assualt lawsuit next year as well.
Haslem certainly has the $$$ to bail them out, but he is being investigated by the Feds for fraud now. And do you really want the guy who owns the Cleveland Browns, having any sort of say in football decisions. Throw in Fulmer potentially sabotaging everything. I can't wait for the movie about this, even the best writers couldn't make this shit up.
So, any recruits from Tennessee, that we should be keeping an eye on? If I were committed there, I would decommitt at this point. Not only do you have no idea who the coach will be, but the whole Athletic Department looks absolutely dysfunctional.
I created a specific thread for Tennessee, this is getting too long
Seems like this Tennessee situation is the definition of Lack of Institutional Control.
*Benny Hill Chase Theme continues*
Jimbo Fisher leaving FSU to become head coach at Texas A&M
Reported by Schlabach
I'll believe he's safe when national signing day has passed.
But this is definitely comforting to hear
That's funny. At least he's feeling the love.
This is just savage. I'm on mobile so can't embed but so worth the click

I'm going to have to applaud everyone there. Hilarious shadenfreude.
Here you go:
Been watching this really good PAC12 game and saw on the slug that Arkansas plans to focus their head coaching search on Gus Malzahn.

Yeah...good luck. If Arkansas thinks they can outbid Auburn, have at it. If they do, I guess Auburn will deal with that.
I just don't see it. Gus has built incredible depth on both sides of the ball at Auburn, and his success seems sustainable, even if they don;t win it all. Arkansas is a tire fire without an AD (although Auburn doesn't have on either).
Gus to Arkansas is a legit deal. He's from Arkansas and coached next door to the u of a for well over decade. Coming into this season he was on the "hot seat" at auburn. If they lose tomorrow, I would bet 80% chance he is named arkansas's Coach come Monday. They win, it's obviously not happening. I'm in the epicenter of this and the Gus talk to Arkansas is real......
Yep. Auburn was ready to fire Gus last year until he beat LSU, this year they were ready do it until he beat Georgia. And honestly if he doesn't win tomorrow he'll probably be right back on the hot seat next year.
I think he might even be gone if they win. Auburn has been flirting with removing him for two seasons now. Why deal with that shit every year.
Isn't that every coach at a main program in the SEC??
They are one bad season or bad loss from the fans trying to push them out.
Who would want that work environment??
Eh. You know.
Nick Saban.
Malzahn.
Les Miles.
Urban Meyer.
Some decent names in there. Guys who get their ring fingers sized after games.
Would a coach really leave a team headed to the playoffs? That seems crazy to me.
Not gonna lie, I often times forget Arkansas is a state. Not like I think it's a city or something...I just genuinely forget it exists.
John Daly would have some words for you if he saw this...
Ironic, right?
Watching AAC championship, ESPN saying Scott Frost to Nebraska being confirmed by multiple sources.
Story first broken by a guy let go by ESPN. π€£π€£
They kept calling McM 'our colleague'.
Dude is right A LOT
EDIT: he should have whatever job he wants based on his sources alone. Why on earth would he be unemployed
It's probably something like this, but for journalists instead of programmers:
Looks like McM is doing just fine.
This graphic is very true. My dad keeps trying to get me to dress professionally and I keep having to explain a programmer in a suit has no credibility.
Chad Morris taking over at Arkansas.
I hope somebody picks up Venables and the OC's from Clemson.
Snyder retires from KSU, Venables heads there for the HC job. Tennessee still unable to find a replacement for Butch.
Snyder really pulling out all stops to make sure he is succeeded by his son. Will be interesting to see who wins out, the "We owe it to Bill!" OR "We need someone new!" crowds.
Because I am a troll, I hope they hire the son.
I like Chad Morris to Arkansas. I remember really wanting him before learning that we got Fuente
Arkansas will have the benefit of being one of the only teams in the SEC that isn't running a potato offense.
Unfortunately, the SEC might be returning to 2007-2012 levels of play. In the east, UGA is looking good, and Mullen is a well respected coach who will likely turn UF around (at least to a perennial 9/10 win team). In the west, Bama is still clicking, while Jimbo @ TAMU, Morris @ Ark and Moorhead @ Miss. St (#MoorCowBell) are all great hires.
reddit posting this chart:
what is that symbol next to "OPEN" for Tenn?
