Darnold has been channeling his inner Grossman on this drive.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Damn even when he's not 100% Bryce Love is really damn fast.

And reeeally damned small. Whatever they're listing him at, it's generous.

Just noticed he's from Wake - did we engage? Or was he too big a croot for us?

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

we got one of his official visits back in 2014, so we were in contention. But I think a combo of Beamer's waning recruiting and the fact that in 2014 we landed McKenzie, McMillian, Williams the RB rotation was already kinda full, plus we added McClease in 2015.

Couple bad calls in this game. Pretty evenly matched teams without those calls, IMO.

Also, WAR DAMN EAGLE! Y'ALL HATE UGA MORE THAN AUBURN, RIGHT?

Anyone have TV listings for FSU game? Want to see how that plays out today. ESPN says ACCN but it's not on my guide anywhere.

ESPN says it's a ACCNE game so streaming will be the only option.

The last two ACCNE games have been on random channels down here.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

It's ACC Network Extra not the same as ACC Network so it's streaming only. Unfortunately most of the media including ESPN does a shitty job of distinguishing the two.

Correct but random channels have carried FSU and UNC games that were listed as ACCNE games down here.

Like Yetti said and Mike06 implied, it sounds like streaming is your best bet for this one if it isn't showing up on your guide.

Things are heating up in Tallahassee. You can sense the electricity in the air.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Yikes, can't say I blame them though.

Sheesh

More fans thank at the UVA spring game.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Looking forward to today's games. I hope Clemson throttles Miami.

Really want Oklahoma and Wisconsin to win today, as I want zero chance of Bama and Ohio State getting into the playoffs.

Would also be nice if ULM did us a favor and ended the streak(*) today.

Side note: the wife just got orders to Germany. Of course it's the smallest base (geilenkirchen AB, a NATO base), which I am absolutely not thrilled about...but we'll make the best of it. What can you guys tell me about Germany. We leave in May

Definitely don't want Wisconsin to win, unless they follow up a Big Ten championship with a pummeling in the first playoff game.

Germany is in Europe and contains many Germans. They speak German there.

Definitely don't want Wisconsin to win

Do you want Bama in the playoffs, because this is how you get Bama in the playoffs!

Germany is in Europe and contains many Germans. They speak German there.

Can somebody fact check this guy? Sounds like a load of bologna

I'm ok with Alabama in the playoffs. Two weeks ago when I thought Alabama was far and away the best team in the country, I was hoping they'd win out and Wisconsin would win out so they would be in the 1/4 game and I'd get to watch Alabama win 58-0. I don't have the dislike of Alabama that a lot of people do.

Looove watching them play. Their RBs always look like Tremaine on tv, just absolute monsters.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Germans speak beautiful English. They will probably need an interpreter when talking to a southern speaker.

My best friend went there on TDY after 9/11 for two weeks. He said it was really close to the borders of Belgium and the Netherlands. He said he liked it a lot better than his duty station in Turkey and Kuwait he had been at prior.

What can you guys tell me about Germany.

Glad you asked!

The concept of Germany as a distinct region in central Europe can be traced to Roman commander Julius Caesar, who referred to the unconquered area east of the Rhine as Germania, thus distinguishing it from Gaul (France), which he had conquered. The victory of the Germanic tribes in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (AD 9) prevented annexation by the Roman Empire, although the Roman provinces of Germania Superior and Germania Inferior were established along the Rhine. Following the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Franks conquered the other West Germanic tribes. When the Frankish Empire was divided among Charlemagne's heirs in 843, the eastern part became East Francia. In 962, Otto I became the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, the medieval German state.

In the High Middle Ages, the regional dukes, princes and bishops gained power at the expense of the emperors. Martin Luther led the Protestant Reformation against the Catholic Church after 1517, as the northern states became Protestant, while the southern states remained Catholic. The two parts of the Holy Roman Empire clashed in the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), which was ruinous to the twenty million civilians living in both parts. The Thirty Years' War brought tremendous destruction to Germany; more than 1/4 of the population and 1/2 of the male population in the German states were killed by the catastrophic war. 1648 marked the effective end of the Holy Roman Empire and the beginning of the modern nation-state system, with Germany divided into numerous independent states, such as Prussia, Bavaria and Saxony.

After the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815), feudalism fell away and liberalism and nationalism clashed with reaction. The 1848 March Revolution failed. The Industrial Revolution modernized the German economy, led to the rapid growth of cities and to the emergence of the Socialist movement in Germany. Prussia, with its capital Berlin, grew in power. German universities became world-class centers for science and the humanities, while music and the arts flourished. The Unification of Germany was achieved under the leadership of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck with the formation of the German Empire in 1871 which solved the Kleindeutsche LΓΆsung, the small Germany solution (Germany without Austria), or Großdeutsche LΓΆsung, the greater Germany solution (Germany with Austria), the former prevailed. The new Reichstag, an elected parliament, had only a limited role in the imperial government. Germany joined the other powers in colonial expansion in Africa and the Pacific.

Germany was the dominant power on the continent. By 1900, its rapidly expanding industrial economy passed Britain's, allowing a naval race and an aggressive foreign policy. Germany led the Central Powers in World War I (1914–1918) against France, Great Britain, Russia and (by 1917) the United States. Defeated and partly occupied, Germany was forced to pay war reparations by the Treaty of Versailles and was stripped of its colonies as well as Polish areas and Alsace-Lorraine. The German Revolution of 1918–19 deposed the emperor and the various kings and princes, leading to the establishment of the Weimar Republic, an unstable parliamentary democracy.

In the early 1930s, the worldwide Great Depression hit Germany hard, as unemployment soared and people lost confidence in the government. In 1933, the Nazi party under Adolf Hitler came to power and quickly established a totalitarian regime. Political opponents were killed or imprisoned. Nazi Germany's foreign policy aimed to create a Greater Germany which consequently saw the remilitarization of the Rhineland in 1936, the annexing of Austria in the Anschluss and parts of Czechoslovakia with the Munich Agreement in 1938 (although in 1939 Hitler annexed further territory of Czechoslovakia), and its invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939 which initiated the Second World War. After forming a pact with the Soviet Union in 1939, Hitler and Stalin divided Eastern Europe. After a "Phoney War" in spring 1940 the German blitzkrieg swept Scandinavia, the Low Countries and France, giving Germany control of nearly all of Western Europe. Only the British Commonwealth and Empire stood opposed. Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941. In Germany, but predominantly in the German-occupied areas, the systematic genocide program known as The Holocaust killed six million Jews, as well as five million others including Poles, Romanies, Russians, Soviets (Russian and non-Russian), and others. In 1942, the German invasion of the Soviet Union faltered, and after the United States had entered the war, Britain became the base for massive Anglo-American bombings of German cities. Germany fought the war on multiple fronts through 1942–1944, however following the Allied invasion of Normandy (June 1944), the German army was pushed back on all fronts until the final collapse in May 1945.

Under occupation by the Allies, German territories were split up, denazification took place, and the Cold War resulted in the division of the country into democratic West Germany and communist East Germany. Millions of ethnic Germans fled from Communist areas into West Germany, which experienced rapid economic expansion, and became the dominant economy in Western Europe. West Germany was rearmed in the 1950s under the auspices of NATO, but without access to nuclear weapons. The Franco-German friendship became the basis for the political integration of Western Europe in the European Union. In 1989, the Berlin Wall was destroyed, the Soviet Union collapsed and East Germany was reunited with West Germany in 1990. In 1998–1999, Germany was one of the founding countries of the eurozone. Germany remains one of the economic powerhouses of Europe, contributing about one quarter of the eurozone's annual gross domestic product. In the early 2010s, Germany played a critical role in trying to resolve the escalating euro crisis, especially with regard to Greece and other Southern European nations. In the middle of the decade, the country faced the European migrant crisis, as the main receiver of asylum seekers from Syria and other troubled regions.

I heard Incirlik used to be alright, until that coup went down a couple years ago. Things are pretty tight and you're no longer allowed to bring your family, unless it's changed again recently.

I do plan on doing quite a bit of traveling once we get there. Belgium, Netherlands, the UK, Amsterdam, Spain..etc etc. Paris is only 4 hours away apparently.

It sounds shallow as hell but I really wanted some CONUS orders. I'm ready to invest in a house and all that good stuff.

He wasn't allowed to bring his wife there. Between 9/11 and him doing TDY'S all over the Middle East and Europe and then Iraq war. He was security forces did Gitmo flights, VIP flights and other travel heavy duties.

I was in Spangdahlem for two years, and was in Geilenkirchen a couple of times. You'll be right in the middle of Northern Europe, fairly close to Aachen (which is a nice town). You'll have access to some great German and Belgian beers. You'll be just a couple of hours away from several nice places by train.

Don't short Belgium as a travel destination. Some great places to visit there, nice people, and like I said, world-class beer that you can't get other places (If you're into beer, think Trappist beers). Also good chocolate in Brussels.

You're an hour away from a cool place to go on Sundays (Tongeren, Belgium Antiques market). Fun to visit even if you aren't into antiques.

You'll end up loving it for the travel opportunities. It will go faster than you think.

Keep socking away money for a house, and be glad you're not paying the carrying costs of taxes, interest, and insurance. The rat race isn't going anywhere while you're in Europe.

Edit: Oh, and did I mention? Germany has an Autobahn, some of which doesn't have a speed limit.

Definitely looking forward to the beer and food, that's for damn sure!

Is there a frickin' Conference Championship in Germany?

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Ya vol...meister der bundesliga

Beer.

My dad was stationed at Patch Barracks in Stuttgart for two years when I was in college and my mom and two sisters were with him. They really enjoyed the entire time they were there and took advantage of being that close to all of the other countries. Day trip to France? No problem. Weekend in the Swiss Alps? Easy peasy.

The Germans are a great people too and not knowing the language won't be an issue since they speak English very well.

Best passenger car drivers in the world. None of the "sit in passing lanes", "no turn signals" stuff you see here as a rule rather than an exception.

If someone flashes their lights at you, it's you being rude, not them.

The left lane is for passing. Otherwise, move to the right.

Or if you're in the left lane somewhere that "keep right except to pass" isn't feasible, you better not be holding up traffic.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

If it's close to Belgium, Brussels and Bruge are awesome spots to visit. Was just there in September. Heard Spain is awesome as well.

Former Army Brat here. We did 2 separate tours in Germany. By far the best the best place my dad was stationed during his 28 years. Honestly the only people we knew that didn't like being there were the ones that never ventured outside of the comfort zone on base.

A few suggestions check out:
1. German Christmas markets. A little like stepping back in time, a lot of Christmas cheer but not tacky.
2. Eastern Europe, often overlooked, but Budapest was one the favorite places I visited, admittedly that was like 20 years ago. But I've heard good things about Croatia too.
3. Fasching. Closest comparison would be Halloween. But generally a big parade with lots of whacky costumes.

I'm in Germany, Wiesbaden specifically. I love it for a variety of reasons. Travel is cheap and easy, they do pork dishes better than anyone (except pulled pork, which gives me the sads), and celebrate random things (white asparagus, anyone?). I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

It looks like their spring game.

Wow, that picture is very telling. The program has imploded on itself this year.

Seriously, to all the recruits who spurned VT because they "weren't big enough" and thought they were going to play big-boy football at F$U, I hope it was worth it.

Tbh I probably would've opted out of going to this game too. I don't think it's fair to judge their entire program based on this one image even though it's hilarious.

As much as I want this to be their VT 2012 season and them have four or five years of turmoil like we did, I don't see it happening.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Nick Chubb is absurdly good at football and deserves to get to that second-place-all-time in SEC career rushing totals behind Walker. Guy looks like a REAL running back. He is WAY better in college than Ezekiel Elliot was, but I think Chubb won't translate to the pros as well.

As it turns out, DeAndre Swift is also quite good and his name describes him well for that run around 10:45 in the fourth.

Safe to say they are deep at that position w Michel also.

Georgia seems to always be really deep at RB. And now they have Jake Fromm State Farm as a backup to Jacob Eason. They are LOADED and have a Saban disciple at coach. They're going to be dangerous for a long time.

Funny how that happened after Richt left...

@VTnerf on insta, @BuryHokie on twitter, #ThanksFrank

Seems like they've been doing this for years, though. Knowshon Moreno, Garrison Hearst, naturally Walker, Terrell Davis...with Sony M, Holyfield, Chubb, and Herrien now, they appear to be RBU.

Their QB list is pretty good too, over the years: Hines Ward, David Greene, Stafford, Aaron Murray, and both Fromm and Eason are on the roster now.

They just...have talent.

Don't forget Gurley is manly.

To you from failing hands we throw

@VTnerf on insta, @BuryHokie on twitter, #ThanksFrank

Oh goodness how did I forget Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. They really are RBU

Backup to Eason? Fromm stepped in as a true freshman to lead uga to 12-1 and an sec championship. Eason is healthy and riding the bench. This is fromm's team, and with the #1 qb recruit next year expect Eason to transfer.

We are the Hokies. We will prevail. We will prevail. We will prevail. We are Virginia Tech.

You're 100% right...but Eason is a rare, rare talent. I wouldn't be surprised if he transferred but dang that depth at QB is absurd. Both are top notch.

Herrien got a look there, too, and looks like another otherworldly UGA RB. There must be something in the water in the RB room down there.

Yup. (Swift traveled from Philly to get there instead of anything in ACC or B1G territory.)

OSU win wasn't part of your original question. If that all happens maybe.

ACC champ and Oklahoma are locks. I'd say SEC champ is a lock. I'd pick the winner of OSU+Wisky to round it out. But that's just me.

VB born, class of '14

I only think the ACC Champ is a lock if it's Clemson. If Miami wins a close game, I don't think they leapfrog Alabama to go from 7 to 4. If they absolutely crush Clemson, however, different story.

Nah I think the ACCCG is win-and-you're-in. If tOSU beats Wisconsin, then I'm looking at OK/ACCCG Winner/SECCG Winner + Alabama or Clemson.

Oklahoma, Clemson, UGA, and Alabama.

Think the Alabama/OSU argument is going to depend on the final score of the OSU/Wisconsin game, just like Miami getting in if they manage to beat Clemson.

In: Oklahoma
In with a win: Georgia based on current score, Clemson, Wisconsin
In with a close loss by Wisconsin or Clemson: Alabama
In with a blowout win: Ohio State, Miami

tOSU will have a hard road no matter what. Their loss to Iowa was by a wide, wide margin. Per last year's Big Ten Champ, PSU, not getting in due to their massive loss to a GOOD Michigan team, I would have a hard time believing that this year's OSU would get the benefit of the doubt over Alabama or the loser of the ACCCG.

Auburn has, what, 10 minutes to bring "close" back into the equation.

UGA is one spot behind Bama, right? If they win this game, either close or going away, they leapfrog Bama. Write it down.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I know there's money and then there's getting paid, but would you leave Auburn for Our-Kansas? Seriously?

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

So who gets the 6 at large NY6 bids?

Bama
PSU
Auburn
Clemson/Miami loser
B1G loser
And... Washington?

UCF is a lock for the peach bowl

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

Yea I am excluding the P5 and UCF

Man we probably would have made it if we beat GT

G5? I mean after winning today the announcers basically said they're in as for us maybe I'm not sure we would have been a "lock" probably would have been in the peach ironically against UCF.

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

Nah, I'm fairly convinced that we needed to at least make it to the ACCCG to have a shot at a NY6 bowl, and losing to Miami removed that possibility.

Edit for correction: The other way to get in was for Miami to not lose to Pitt, then Clemson beats Miami in a close game so both teams make the playoff -- then we would be Orange Bowl bound by being the highest ranked ACC team not in the playoff.

It may have screwed us, but I'm glad Miami lost. Fuck Miami and their gaudy turnover chain.

We would have had a small chance at the Peach Bowl if we finished 10-2. It probably would have come down to VT/TCU/Wash for the last spot. Oh well.

UCF and USC?

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
@VTnerf on insta, @BuryHokie on twitter, #ThanksFrank

Technically, there's only 4 at-large bids. The Orange Bowl doesn't have at-large teams, and two of the "at-large" bids have to go to UCF (highest ranked G5 champ) and USC (Pac-12 champ displaced from the Rose Bowl).

Orange Bowl will be ACCCG loser vs. either B1G loser or Alabama.

PSU and whoever is left of Wisconsin/OSU/Alabama are locks. The other two are probably Auburn and TCU.

I know TCU has one more loss than Washington, but if they didn't have the conference set up that they did (in other words, if this was last year), they would still be ranked ahead of Washington, both with 10-2 records.

Forgot that 10-3 osu could drop out of NY6, but they probably have better schedule than Washington, and unlike tcu only lost to Oklahoma once.

UGA has to make the playoffs now, right?

They are a lock. UGA, Oklahoma, and ACCCG winner are in at this point. If Wisky wins they are in too. If not could be an interesting CFP reveal

It wouldn't be the top 4 that would be the suspenseful reveal, but the other NY6 at- larges.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

UGA has 31 seniors on that roster. Woah.

I hope Clemson keeps their foot in the gas until the end.

Edit: HAHAHA another turnover.

VB born, class of '14

NOW does everybody see that we should've and were capable of beating Miami?

We were. Just some bad execution, and the team and J.J. have been beat up for a while. No point in anyone getting upset at it now, though (and not saying you are).

But that's the great thing about sports: there's always next year and I'm salivating at a healthy VT with a more experienced offense.

Good to see Miami's exactly what we thought they were, just a shame we couldn't have been the ones to expose them.

Miami is about to get 38-0 bro'd.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Shit literally came to post that, leg sir

You mean Miami just got 38-0 bro'd.

And there it is.

If only Miami was better at recovering fumbles. πŸ€”

38-0 bro

Looks like the turnover chain backfired lol the Miami players were fighting over the ball and lost a touchdown chance

Where's dat turnover chain now, bro? #DaUback

It appears that Tony the Tiger has it in his pocket.

Miami vs Clemson last two games: 96-0

Wonder if they'll fire Richt like they did Golden /s

Was just watching with some Clemsons friends. Had a great time.

Am I a bad person for wanting Clemson to tack on another 20 just so their last two games against "da U" are each 58-0 and a combined 116-0?

No. No you are absolutely NOT a bad person for wishing that. Because they are in fact a very dirty team full of d'bags.

Diaz's sideline mannerisms aren't quite on the level of Venables or Foster yet, but will get there with practice.

I have to hand it to Clemson. Playing backups in your championship game at any point is hardcore.

If you're winning 38-0 with 7 minutes left, you're fine doing that.

Maybe bad ass was a better choice? I was trying to express how totally dominant they were.

Might actually win it (for once).

Wisconsin just manballed so hard they destroyed the turf.

When you're so bad they've got their backup in in a championship game you know you're garbage

These Fox announcers are atrocious.

Are they getting paid by Dr Pepper as well?? That's the second reference to Dr Peoper I've heard them use.

Wisconsin refusing to go gently into the good night.

If Ohio State wins a close one, do they get into the playoffs?

Probably.

You know it's bad when the broadcasters notice there's still 7:30 left in the game and wanting an Arena rules clock to get the game over.

The U is Bak bitches!
Back to sucktasticness. And yes I love it.

I'd have preferred if they had done that for the VT game.

Dang it! They're going to score

Clemson did that by playing their backups.

Kind of like how Coleman Fox became the "player to watch" in the BC game

Ohio State is about to get another break on a 4th an 1 spot.

Eh, maybe he got it.

Well, they shouldn't have, anyway.

You know Barrett is getting ranked over the coals on 11W right now.

Well, that was a untimely/costly bad pass to a guy who was wide open.

There's a good chance that the game that contractually be in the Sugar Bowl (SEC vs. Big 12 champs) is going to be in the Rose Bowl.

And the irony is that it would be one of the rare instances where it actually would be SEC and Big 12 champs.

No second flag on that play? That's some shit.

Yeah, how did the refs not see that tackle? From any angle, anywhere on the field.

This is the part where Ohio State starts lobbying for the playoffs.

OSU makes the play offs and they lose to clemson by 30+ again

If the committee actually puts OSU in, Alabama and Penn State should both riot and boycott the NCAA.

or they start the push to make the playoffs 6-8 teams

Uhhh what case would Penn St have when they lost to OSU?

They have no case this year, but they absolutely have a case to be pissed if the commitee completely reverses their argument that kept Penn State out last year. OSU and Alabama this year are basically Penn State and OSU last year. And OSU is somehow gonna wind up in the playoff in both scenarios despite being on the opposite end of the same argument in subsequent years.

Key difference - last year the question was between OSU and PSU, both in the same conference. This year, the teams are from different conferences, and the SEC champ is already included.

If that's the technicality it takes to completely reverse the logic used last year, it just shows that their argument last year was complete bullshit in the first place (which it was).

8 team playoff with 5 conference champs and 3 at larges and the committee won't have to bend over backwards and change their arguments to make sure Ohio State sneaks in anymore.

That's the best solution.

Also has the advantage that they can let Alabama and Ohio State in every year.

What happens if you get a garbage conference champ? Like say you get a 7-5 team who happens to win the SEC east and wins the conference title, do they really deserve a shot at the national title?

You have to weigh the odds and cost of that happening, and compare that to the benefit of avoiding controversy like PSU/tOSU last year and tOSU/bama this year. I lean towards an 8-team playoff (5+3) with the expectation that the situation you describe will be pretty rare. And if you can win 4 postseason games in a row, then I say you deserved it, like when a wildcard team wins the Super Bowl...

Yes.

In the current setup (4 teams, 10 conferences), this would make little sense, and would, in effect make for a "wasted" tournament seed. As is, the playoffs don't guarantee any conference champion the chance to move o and compete for a national title.

If you expand the tournament to 8 teams and guarantee the P5 conferences a seed, then your bracket starts to look more like basketball one.

The #16 seeds (cupcakes) have two primary functions in the March Madness tournament:

1) they fulfill a promise to the smaller conference teams that if they manage to win their conference, they are in the tournament and can compete for the national championship, and

2) realistically they give the #1 seeds an effective bye, or an easier path to the title.

Your 7-5 SEC team would be the 8 seed that gives the #1 seed an easier path to the second round. It also guarantees each P5 team a chance to compete for the national title if they win their conference.

Ideally a 16 team tournament would guarantee all FBS teams can compete for the national title. (Win your conference and you are in the playoff).

In that case we'd have a few cupcakes (MAC, Sun Belt) warming up the top seeds in the first round.

I still think the best G5 team should get an auto-bid leaving only 2 true at large selections. This format effectively makes for a 16 team playoff as the conference championship games would essentially be the "1st round".

Gonna be an interesting decision tomorrow at Noon. A close win for OSU leaves that Bama/OSU argument in full force. Losing to Iowa by 31 and at home to Oklahoma in a no-too-close game leaves a lot to be desired but probably will still get in over Bama. Would be crazy to see a Clemson/Bama rematch at the 1/4 semifinal game.

Congratulations to Urban Cryer on successfully knocking the B1G from the playoffs this year. They just put Bama in.

JT Barrett: "You know how hard it is to win in this conference (B1G)."

πŸ˜³πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

On the bright side, if Bama makes the playoff, that should put a B1G team in the Orange so that should move us up the Bowl pecking order.

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

Bullshit missed DPI aside, my predictions for tomorrow's NY6 and playoff selection show:

Sugar Bowl: Clemson vs Alabama
Rose Bowl: Oklahoma vs Georgia

Orange Bowl: Miami vs Ohio State
Peach Bowl: UCF vs Wisconsin
Cotton Bowl: Auburn vs Notre Dame
Fiesta Bowl: Penn State vs USC

Rationale:
* Ohio State's loss to Iowa and a close win over Wisconsin isn't enough to jump over Alabama
* Penn State - USC would probably be the Rose Bowl if any other bowl had been one of the national semifinals and I expect Penn State and Wisconsin to be ranked fairly close together.
* Wisconsin doesn't fall far for a close loss to Ohio State
* Auburn drops, but not so far that I think Washington or Notre Dame (both of whom rise because of Stanford's loss and a big loss by TCU) leapfrog them
* Miami falls into the mid-teens, probably around 15-16
* Notre Dame because I think the rankings will shape out:

01 - Clemson
02 - Oklahoma
03 - Georgia
04 - Alabama
05 - Ohio State
06 - Wisconsin/Penn State
07 - Wisconsin/Penn State
08 - Auburn
09 - USC
10 - Washington
11 - UCF
12 - Notre Dame
13 - Stanford
14 - Michigan State
15 - Miami
16 - TCU
17 - LSU
18 - Washington State
19 - Oklahoma State
20 - Northwestern
21 - VT
22 - Mississippi State
23 - Memphis
24 - NC State
25 - San Diego State (honestly not sure here, but Fresno State lost)

Ohio State cannot go to the Orange Bowl, since they are Big Ten champs.

Thought they'd go as the "#2" team since their usual slot (the Rose Bowl) was taken as part of the playoff. Plus figured the committee would salivate at the idea of a rematch of the 2002 BCS title game. Adjusted as follows:

Orange Bowl: Miami vs Wisconsin/Penn State (whomever ends up higher)
Fiesta Bowl: USC vs Ohio State
Peach Bowl: UCF vs Wisconsin/Penn State (whomever ends up lower)

The Orange Bowl does not take any conference champ displaced by the semi-finals.

Can the NY6 Bowls really take 3 B1G teams? I would have thought that would be a no-no.

Unlike the BCS, the NY6 bowls have no conference limits. There were actually 4 Big Ten teams in the NY6 bowls last year.

They can take whomever they want. This isn't the BCS, where you're limited to two teams. The only requirements are:
* 1-4 get into the playoff
* the highest ranked Group of 5 team gets a NY6 bowl
* Sugar Bowl is SEC #1 vs Big XII #1 when not hosting a semifinal
* Rose Bowl is Pac-12 #1 vs Big Ten #1 when not hosting a semifinal
* Orange Bowl is ACC #1 vs SEC #2/Big 10 #2/ND when not hosting a semifinal
* Fiesta, Cotton and Peach Bowls are all selected by the committee

Thoughts from David Hale, who I consider one of the most level-headed college football writers.

Why the hell does getting blown the fuck out by Iowa not count because it "feels like an aberration."?? The mental gymnastics people do EVERY year to convince themselves OSU belongs in the playoff blows me away. Different arguments EVERY time, whatever people need to come up with to fit their narrative to say they're "one of the best 4."

Their real argument is "OSU should be in the playoffs EVERY YEAR because they like them."

This and the consistent overrating of the BIG 10 drive me nuts. Big 10 as a conference had three premiere non conference games this year and 2 of their teams got blitzed at home in them

Yeah my first thought on reading that was YOU'RE AN ABERRATION DAVID HALE

I mean the Hawks just took them apart that game. Nothing fluky about that win

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Question here is, if Ohio State gets into the CFP, does Wisconsin stay above Alabama and get into the Orange Bowl?

Doubt it. I can see an argument for keeping Wisconsin ahead of Alabama, but I believe Alabama's the better team and that's why they'll end up ahead of Wisconsin.

This year would have been a really interesting year for a 16- or 24-team playoff, by the way. All five of your Go5 conference champions have a record of 10-3 or better with Troy having the biggest win of the crop.

Not sure what thread to put this in but this has to be a joke, right?

Considering the logistics of it...or lack thereof, yes, yes it's a joke

McM is on fire right now and he knows it.

Also you can't get fired for a Twitter joke if you ain't got no job.

I'd still take Bama over OSU.

Losing in November to a 7-5 team and losing to a team that you may play again in the playoffs seem like good reasons to not let OSU in. I would always give the benefit of the doubt to a Saban team. They may have lost to the only team with a pulse that they played but I bet they won't get blown out by anybody in the playoffs and a Bama/Clemson rematch in the first round would get a lot of eyeballs.

USCw only lost to ND and WSU...

just sayin'

Don't bring that logical reasoning and non OSU/Bama bias in here. In all reality USC gets that same bias but its kind of funny not to see them included in the #4 convo at all.

As mentioned above I believe using the logic of last year Alabama should be in over OSU. And I would laugh if that happened.

Then they can claim that they won the B1G so they deserve it.

I just think it pushes more for an 8 team playoff. All Conf champs, highest ranked G5 champ (because otherwise they will never have a shot at winning the national title and UCF has the only dot to have an undefeated season) and two at large teams.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

Last year and this year just aren't comparable. I like Andy Bitter's thoughts on the playoffs that he shared on his podcast with McFarling. He said something along the lines of having an 8 team playoff puts teams in that already blew their chance.

I'm a fan of just 4 teams because it keeps everything exciting going into the last week of the season and every single weekend still matters. Going to anything more than 4 would diminish that.

I like the 4 better than top 2 that we used to have because it gives that buffer to allow for there to be more than just 2 great teams playing for the title and for things to ultimately get settled on the field rather than by voters.

Except every single weekend doesn't matter.

Ohio St lost to Penn St. last year. Didn't matter.

Ohio St got trucked by freakin Iowa for their 2nd loss (and pooped their pants against another playoff team in OK at home), there are 2 weekends that probably won't matter.

And if Alabama gets that spot, they lost to really the only better than average team they played all year, and it won't matter.

Yeah this argument is getting pretty weak. If anything the last two years are starting to show that individual weeks don't matter at all and the committee is just going to pick who they like.

I'm more convinced this year than I was last year we need at least 16. And it can be done by only adding one week (total) to the season... if the NCAA were to go back to an 11-game schedule like they have at the I-AA level.

* 11-game schedule
* conference championship week (which every conference will soon have) with champions getting an automatic bid
* round of 16 at home sites of higher seed
* teams that don't make the playoff that won at least 6 games eligible for bowl games
* round of 8 played at NY6 bowls that aren't hosting the semifinal
* semifinals played at the remaining two NY6 bowls a week later
* championship game played on MLK day

Total games played by eventual champion: 16
Current games played by eventual champion: 15

Don't need the top 16 in a playoff to get to the national champion.

All 10 conference champions, 6 at-large. That's not necessarily top-16, just 16 teams.

The P5 are never going to go for that. And why would they?

Do we really want to see the top team play the bottom team of that?

For me, if you get the P5 champions and three at large, you've captured all the matches I want to see, except for the occasional bowl of interest.

More often than not, you're actually getting the top 10-11 teams + 5-6 additional, depending on where everyone ranks.

Also, like Fireman, you're ignoring the political side of the equation if teams like UCF, Boise State, 2015 Western Michigan, 1998 Tulane and 1999 Marshall continue to be left out of the playoff. Eventually Congress will attempt to step in in the name of "fairness" (re: vote buying) and what Congress attempts to do could actually result in a worse product instead of a better product. Even top-8 has the potential of leaving out some damn good conference champions from both P5 and Go5 conferences.

You can cheat a little because of another of my posts, but here's 2004's potential candidates - all P5 champions, as many Go5 champions that fit into the top-12 as possible, and all at-large candidates in the top-12. I won't give you team names, but will give you a small resume on each. Who do you leave out? Any mention of rankings are final rankings, not 'during season'.

2004:
12-0, conference champion. Three top-20 wins, two of which are top-10.
12-0, conference champion. Four top-25 wins, one of which is top-5
12-0 conference champion. Four top-15 wins, one of which is top-1
10-1 at-large candidate. Three top-25 wins. Shut out by a candidate on this list.
10-1 at-large candidate. One top-20 win. Lost by 6 to a candidate on this list.
11-0 conference champion. Two top-25 wins
9-2 at-large candidate. One top-15 win, one additional top-25 win. Lost by 5 to a top-15 team, lost by 18 to a candidate on this list.
10-2 conference champion. One top-15 win, one additional top-20 win. Lost at home to a 5-6 team. Lost by 11 to a candidate on this list.
12-0 conference champion. No notable wins.
10-1 conference champion. No notable wins. Lost by 3 on the road to a top-15 team
9-2 at-large candidate. One top-25 win. Lost by 1 to a candidate on this list. Lost by 29 to another candidate on this list
9-2 conference champion. Two top-25 wins. Two losses to top-15 teams on the road, one by 13 and the other by 37.

Pick your 8 teams.

Like I said, the five P5 champions plus three at-large captures all the teams I need to see in order to determine a national champion.

Frankly, the top four captures it fairly well, but there is always going to be some griping from the five through eight teams.

Okay, so pick your at-large teams from that pool I just gave you but realize you're leaving out at least the 9th and 10th ranked teams in the country, possibly more. Or for that matter, 2009:

#4 TCU, #5 Florida, #6 Boise State. Two are undefeated, Florida is a 1-loss team who lost in the SEC title game to #1 Alabama.

The six BCS Champions are ranked 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9.

Who gets left out?

An 11 game schedule is never going to happen. No school is going to want to give up a home game.

Why are we pushing for automatic conference champs? There are years where the conference champ has no business being in the playoffs. If your not ranked in top 12 you shouldn't get in period.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

They could certainly make it a rule that the conference champ only gets in only if they're ranked in the top 12.

Because that's how it's done in every other NCAA sport.

Edit: Hell, that's how it's done in every other league including the NFL. More so, the NFL makes teams with a better record travel to the home sites of some division champions who finish 7-9/8-8/9-7 despite being the third of fourth best team in their conference.

And college football leads them All for popularity. NCAA basketball is a lot different, the parity is a lot higher, teams play ALOT more games and almost the entire top 25 every year makes it in.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Seems to work well for I-AA. A couple of conferences opt out for whatever reason (two in a bowl, Ivy League because Ivy League), but they take 24 teams including every conference champion. You don't think a 16 or 24-team I-A tournament won't be insanely popular?

But of course this year, all 5 conference champs are in the top 12. And UCF probably will be too when the new rankings come out.

That's this year, but a blanket policy ignores the times it doesn't work.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

You're also ignoring the political end of things, which is the fact that if you expand to 8 or 16 teams and don't include the highest ranking Go5 Champion Congress will eventually get involved, and if Congress gets involved they'll just make everything worse.

Here's every BCS/P5 conference champion not in the top-12 since 1998. Rankings are BCS/CFP unless otherwise noted. If a year isn't listed, no one was left out:

1998 - Syracuse (15, 8-3)
1999 - Stanford (22 AP, 8-3)
2000 - Purdue (14 AP, 8-3). Highest ranked Big Ten team in the BCS is Michigan at 15
2001 - LSU (13, 9-3) Florida and Tennessee both ranked in the top-8, LSU beat UT 31-20 in the SEC title game.
2002 - FSU (14, 9-4)
2004 - Pittsburgh (21, 8-3)
2005 - Florida State (20, 8-4). Miami and Virginia Tech both in the top-10
2006 - Wake Forest (14, 10-2).
2008 - Virginia Tech (19, 9-4). Highest ranked ACC team is Georgia Tech at 14
2009 - an oddity year. Georgia Tech is 9th and 11-2, but the top 8 include the other BCS conference champions, #5 Florida (12-1), #4 MWC Champion TCU (12-0) and #6 WAC Champion Boise State (13-0). Who do you leave out?
2010 - Virginia Tech (13, 11-2). Connecticut (25 AP, 8-4). WVU highest ranked Big East team at 21
2011 - Clemson (15, 10-3). WVU (23, 9-3). VT is the highest ranked ACC team at 11.
2012 - Louisville (21, 10-2). Wisconsin (8-5, Coaches 23). Highest ranked Big Ten team is Nebraska as 12

Here is every Go5/non-AQ champion not in the top-12 since 1998. You'll notice all of these teams have at least 10 wins and most are just on the cusp of the top-12. A couple of years in particular, multiple such teams are within the top-12 meaning at least one of them is likely getting left out:

2000 - TCU (14 BCS, 11-1)
2001 - BYU (19 AP, 12-1).
2002 - Colorado State (23 AP, 10-3)
2004 - Three non-AQ champions in top-10 (#6 Utah 11-0, #9 Boise State 11-0, #10 Louisville 10-1). At least one would get left out in an 8-team playoff
2005 - TCU (14, 11-1)
2008 - Two non-AQ champions in top-10 (#6 Utah 12-0, #9 Boise State 12-0). Boise State likely left out in an 8-team playoff
2009 - see BCS comments. Two non-AQ champions in the top 8, a 1-loss at-large in the top 5, and all BCS champions ranked in the top 9.
2010 - Nevada (15, 12-1)
2011 - TCU (18, 10-2)
2012 - Northern Illinois (15, 12-1)
2013 - UCF (15, 11-1)
2014 - Boise State (20, 11-2)
2015 - Houston (18, 12-1)
2016 - Western Michigan (13-0)

TL;DR

For Power 5/BCS conferences, a cutoff of top-15 would still exclude as many as nine conference champions while a cutoff of top-12 excludes an additional eight -- three of which have at least 10-11 wins. An 8-team playoff also has the potential of excluding either a #5 Florida (at-large) or #9 Georgia Tech (ACC Champion) because of two champions from non-AQ conferences in the top-8.

For the smaller conferences, a top-12 cutoff excludes just about every "highest ranked" champion, only one of which has three or more losses and at least one of which is undefeated. Likewise, an 8-team playoff excludes at least 3 and possibly 4 champions from these conferences that ranked in the top-8 or top-10 that season.

Because everything else is just subjective fan and media masturbation.

If you win your conference, you are by default the best team in your conference. If you don't win your conference, you aren't the best team in your conference. If you aren't even the best team in your conference, you can't be the best team in the country.

With 5 eligible CFP conference champions, the weakest champion gets left out of the playoffs. This allows blowhards and shills in the sports media to argue for teams like OSU or Bama (but only when they win their conference) and it keeps the OOC matchups relevant to selection.

Edit: Also because rankings are silly.

The only real problem with this is that Ohio State argued the other position last year, that the best team should get in, not the conference champion.

...years when the conference champ has no business being in the playoffs

Agree whole heartedly, and the Iowa loss should keep OSU out. Don't think it will though.

Looking pretty good for us to get an Orlando bowl at this point. Ohio State beating Wisconsin likely puts Bama in the playoff and a B1G team in the Orange Bowl, so that opens up the Citrus Bowl for the ACC. I still think there's a strong chance ND gets a NY6 bid. ND does have a good strength of schedule, plus they're ND, and the chance for a big traditional powerhouse matchup in the Cotton Bowl like ND vs Penn State should be too hard to pass up. That would put us in the Citrus against LSU most likely for a New Years Day bowl.

Except a BIG conference Champ, OSU can't go to the Orange bowl that that muddles the waters some.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Agreed. Ohio State will go to the Fiesta and play USC in a Rose Bowl in the desert. I think the Orange takes either Penn State or Wisconsin, whichever is ranked higher. I think Wisconsin.

It is a pickle.

1. OSU getting in last year had a lot to do with them beating OU. (Good OOC win)
2. Alabama doesn't have such a win
3. Public didn't like OSU leapfrog last year
4. New committee members
5. Going to be called homerism whichever gets picked

I personally dislike OSU more than 'Bama, but expect OSU gets in. SOS is going to be more important than a bad loss. (Iowa). Hope I am wrong.

Damnit wiscy, you let me down.

The only thing I hate more than letting OSU leapfrog in last year is letting them do it again this year.

Of course it's somewhat mitigated that it's Alabama they'd be leaping over.

I think the conference championship is a tie-breaker between two teams with similar records. I give Alabama the edge over OSU due to Bama's one loss against a top ten team vs OSU's loss to Oklahoma and a really bad loss to Iowa. I just can't get that Iowa loss out of my head when comparing the two. If both had one loss, the conference championship puts OSU in over Bama. But the second and really bad loss should keep them out.

Any TKPers at the Big10 Champ game? I spotted a maroon VT shirt on the first row at the start of the game.

Was it "Mission Accomplished"?

I almost don't care whether it's Bama or OSU that gets picked. Clemson, Oklahoma, and Georgia are another plane IMO, and that will show with whoever they get matched with.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Eh, Saban was undefeated until Auburn that may have played a couple of weeks well enough to beat nearly any team in recent memory. Give him a couple of weeks and he'll give someone a game if he's there.

I think Bammer destroys anOSU if they play this weekend.

They're in the conversation for a reason to be sure. This is just my subjective eyes telling me that this year's Bama isn't the unstoppable force that past squads had the reputation of being. The top 3 seeds all look like they might have an argument that they are #1, whereas everyone else is just squabbling on whether they should be top 4.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

1. Clemson
2. Oklahoma
3. Georgia
4. USC
...now we don't have to fight over ugly loss or conference champion because you get both and the bonus of a new team in the playoff and watching Bama and Buckeye fans lose their collective minds.

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

Watching Bama and Buckeye fans lose their collective minds

Or, Wisconsin gets in over Bama and the Buckeyes.

This is great... except I hate U$C. If we're gonna call an audible, how about we check down to UCF? They're an undefeated conference champ, so it should be easy for the committee to defend!

I can't help you with your personal feelings for USC, however as for UCF I'm not sure what to make of them. It's great they not only won their conference, but went undefeated. I'm all for them in the Peach Bowl, I just think the committee would have a tough time defending SOS. Also weird thing I realized is USC had no bye week until after the UCLA game, which in a weird way I feel should be considered.

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

Alabama's OOC - FSU, Fresno State, Colorado State, Mercer. All wins.

Ohio State's OOC - Oklahoma, Army, UNLV. Oklahoma was a loss.

USC's OOC - Western Michigan, Texas, and Notre Dame. They lost to ND out of that bunch.

Since Alabama had 4 OOC games, the best way to compare would be to lump the FSU game in with the SEC games. Therefore, Alabama has the weakest OOC schedule. Ohio State and USC both lost to the best teams on their OOC schedule, but at least USC scheduled 2 P5 teams.

Honestly, at this point, I don't know why USC is so far out of the conversation at this point.

FSU with their original QB was probably a lot better than any other FSU opponent had to face.

Thoughts from the Bear.

Last thought before the selection show makes it official -- regardless of how it shakes out, we shouldn't be seeing Alabama vs. Clemson round 3 in the national championship game this year.

Ain't it grand

Means nothing for the topic at hand, but Alabama edged out Ohio State for 4th in both polls. We're still 22nd and fell to 22nd in the Coaches poll. Miami fell to 11th, nowhere near as far as I thought they should. Also thought TCU would fall more than one spot.

Based on polls:
Clemson - Bama
Oklahoma - Georgia

Orange: Miami vs Wisconsin
Fiesta: USC vs Ohio State
Peach: UCF vs Penn State
Cotton: Auburn vs Washington (don't see Auburn going to the Peach Bowl since that was the site of the SEC title game)

Notre Dame is 14th and 15th in both polls, so I see the possibility of them replacing Washington as the last at-large team, but I don't think it's likely.

Do we get AnOSU v USCwest Orange ???

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

No, B1G champ will never play in the Orange. USC vs osu rose bowl in the desert in Fiesta. Wisconsin is the higher ranked of the available B1G SEC teams or Notre Dame, so they will go to orange against Miami

So it should be:
Fiesta: USC vs Ohio St
Orange: Miami vs Wisconsin
Peach: UCF vs
Do we think Notre Lame gets an at-large?
Either way VT should play in Orlando.

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

I think the Peach takes Auburn. I also think Penn State goes to Cotton. The last NY6 spot in the Cotton is between Washington, TCU, and ND. I still think strong shot ND gets the nod because of fan base, brand, and better strength of schedule. Plus Penn State vs ND would sell.

To that end, so would TCU since they're in Fort Worth. TV ratings however, ND wins hands down.

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

I don't think the Peach takes Auburn because Auburn just played there last night.

Peach doesn't choose, committee does. They'll probably go with highest ranked possible to balance UCF.
