Cam Philips Played Entire 2017 Season with Sports Hernia Injury

We were probably all wondering if Cam suffered the injury vs BC or even as early as the ECU game, but man talk about doing it for the team. He had to have been playing through some serious pain at times and still almost put up 1,000 yards this season.

Virginia Tech revealed that their No. 1 wide receiver actually sustained the injury in August but decided to stay on the field all season.

"I felt I had to play and suck it up and tough it out as long as I needed to, and then I just felt after that UVA game that it was the right time, with the long break that we would have preparing for the bowl game," Phillips said according to HokiesSports.com. "I just thought that was the right time for it, but the timetable [for recovery] ended up being longer to come back."

Holy crap. What would have happened to the season without him out there!

Poop. It would've been a stinker without Cam.

We would have had to hold the defense accountable for their numbers

Holy Ekanam Batman!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

I wonder how long Sly has had the bad ankle?

This is going to be great for the ACC.

73 touches, 974 yards, 7 tds all while suffering from a sports hernia

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Manly AF

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

So that's why he didn't set all the records all the time. I knew something must have been wrong

Just don't like this (for his pro career & combine day). Was it ballsy & cajones AF? Absofreakinlutely! Good for his draft stock? Probably. But because of our history of players being affected by injuries in the pros, I worry. Part of me wishes he waited until fully healed to return to action (or something like that).

when he says the recover time longer than expected it does make you wonder

can't imagine a muscle wall deformity gets anything but aggravated (larger more inflamed) during a football season... and thats without any compensatory stuff

Putting up those numbers while suffering from a sports hernia all year?! Hats off to Cam for his grit, resolve, and showing how much he loves his team and VT! Hopefully, he recovers fully and shows out at the combine.

Cam Phillips - Michael Brewer Brass Balls Award Recipient 2017.

I was gonna Photoshop together a trophy for that, but thought better of it.

As someone who'd never heard of a sports hernia and had to google it, I'm impressed with his level of play. Also, I still don't exactly know what a sports hernia is (something with in the groin area)?

I believe it is just a weakening of the groin musculature leading to pain with movement, however it may lead to an abdominal/inguinal hernia which is when the intestines are able to press against or even poke through weakened areas of muscle in the groin or abdomen.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

That's a real deal issue right there. For him to play the entire season with that issue....GROWN MAN SHIT! Props to ya cam!

Hokie Love!
