January Winter Storm 2018

So it's looking like snow on the coast from Jacksonville to New England could be in store this week. Just found out my kids school and preschool is all closed till Friday. So this will be my holy crap my kids have been home 18 of the last 20 days vent thread.
How cold is it for everyone? Expecting any snow? Fun inside snow day activities?

Cold, just a dusting coming to RVA. But VA Beach is apparently going to get a decent amount because that is where all of my resources are going.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

I'm going to be Mr Snow Blower because I still have my snowblower from Ohio days!

It's probably not going to do shit with this cold powder that is gonna fall. A leaf blower will probably do better.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Listen I have a snowblower in SC, that thing is getting used, period.

I hear ya man. I hope you had that.tbing treated and all the gas out of it. When I worked on small engines I always got a ton of generators and snow blowers in right before a snow storm from people who hadnt touched them since the last snow storm. Lots of carburetor cleaning going on.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

The gas has been out of it for 4 years. Had it serviced before we left, just been in storage since.

Recent models have it tracking much closer to the coast and further inland so you may very well see much more than a dusting in the RVA

good. hopefully that'll breakup this forsaken dry cold

^^ This. This has been the trend for the past 24-36 hours in the models. Also means more snow for the 757.

@CraigThompsonVT

Yes yes. Needless to say it is going to be a very busy day. Y'all TKP for me.

Was 11 degrees on my way into work today in Greenville, SC, but despite prime temperatures for snow, it looks like we won't be getting in on that (at current iphone weather app projections).

It is 12 in Baltimore as the high today. Won't get above teens/twenties until Monday.

It's been so cold in Maine the last several days ... -19, -21, -10, -15 ... when I've woken in the mornings. So in a messed up sort of way, it will be nice to have the storm come through as it will bring our temperatures up into the 20s for a couple of days. (Before heading back down to -14 again on Saturday as forecast.)

Humans are not meant to live there.

Edit: was this air temp or wind chill? Our last year in Ohio we had 8 days straight where wind chill got that cold but never air temp. I'd never seen ice on the inside of windows prior to that.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Those are real temps! I live by a lake so we always have a pretty decent wind blowing too ... I don't want to know what the windchill would have calculated to.

It's crazy every time I would take the dog out and my beard would instantly freeze stiff as wires. It's just been super cold.

Lived in Stonegate Apts in the early '80s and on multiple occasions had ice all the way down on the inside corner of the two outside walls. I think we had wind chill to about -30 or 35 one time and classes were actually cancelled. Not due to snow (which hardly EVER happened) but due to the extreme cold.

Can confirm. Happened at our apartment on Houston St. as well. Walked to class at 8 AM and my hair froze, classes cancelled that afternoon.

I was about to post the ten-day for the mountains of Central PA but then I saw this.

It has been this cold here before...but only in February, and not for this long.

Yeah...been cold as hell here in jersey, lotta temps in the teens, but not as bad as what new england has had. My folks in the adirondacks of new york had -23 yesterday.

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

Wind chill forecast for Thursday and Friday here in the Harrisonburg, VA area are nuts. Daytime lows of -5 and nightime lows of -20.

Double post, somehow?

Yeah I've had a few double-digit negative days recently. Yesterday and today have been some of the worst.

But tomorrow it will be 20+ degrees, so break out the sunscreen. Next week it'll get up to 45 degrees, might need to turn on the A/C

I know how you feel, man.

I have been trying to ship beer to my traders up in New Hampshire and Upstate NY, but it's been so cold, that cans have been freezing via UPS/FedEx Ground on 2 day shipping routes.

I know people have much larger issues with the cold than I do, but it's damn frustrating when I have beer I cannot ship out.

I'll send you my Virginia address and you can ship to me......

would love to get a little but no snow forecast here (St Augustine) ...upper 20's tomorrow nite and Thur nite

After spending the week and a half in a perpetual freeze (real feel has been down to about negative 29) ...it feels good as fuck to step out into the mid 30s. ...can't wait for the roads to clear up though.

6 this morning with a high of 26 today. About an inch of ice on the lake. Give me two more weeks and we will be ice fishing! Not!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

It is so ridiculously cold in Raleigh. Some area schools had to send students home early because their heating systems couldn't handle the temperatures. At work, we were all wearing jackets all day and I was basically parked on top of a space heater and I was still cold. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for snow, even though we're in the trace to one inch zone. I have a puppy that hasn't experience snow yet πŸ˜‚

Just got back to Raleigh on Sunday night and this weather is a break in the cold after spending 8 days in Detroit. Think we averaged -10 the whole time we were there, not the best time to visit/have the in-laws try to convince you to move back.

If you were actually in Detroit/SE Michigan, it was NOT -10. Maybe 10 with lows near/below zero. Feels like temp could have been that low, but only for a couple of days.

I expect downvotes for this: its been in the 70s for over a week in southern Arizona

As our resident meteorologist, could you please elaborate on how an east coast storm in January can have the same air pressure in winter as a hurricane? The current storm is 950 millibars and Hurricane Sandy was around 940s!

Let's Go

HOKIES

no clue where youre seeing 950 yet, it hasnt hit that yet but basically everyone has it bombing out due to its close proximity to a jet core. the jet core has a way of really exciting things and strengthening lows for a number of reasons

the temperature gradient is also driving some upper level divergence and forcing some baroclinic instability which is basically forcing more lift. basically theres a bunch of factors that are creat8ng a really strong system however i dont think theres been enough ice crystal development as i think the low is staying off shore far enough to not cause many issues in the nova area

Of interesting note, the beginning of this video on weather.com shows our beloved Cascades in a frozen state

"Stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!" - William Addison Caldwell, 1872

I just asked my fiance if she wanted to drive up and hike out to see the frozen falls.....

I think I just learned some new profanity and I think I may not be engaged anymore.

I asked the wife and got about the same level of interest.

So sad! Frozen Cascades is one of the coolest things I've ever seen and I had the joy of seeing it twice in two different years

Yup. I saw it one year while wearing shorts and a tshirt. It 65 degrees after a week of near zero temperatures. Coolest thing ever. We actually saw the falls start flowing again when an entire sheet of ice from top to bottom fell. It sounded like an explosion.

Looks like we may get 6+ inches in the 757. Would be nice to have another 4 day weekend from work!

WXRisk just put out his first call map and it shows Richmond right on the line for 1-2 or 2-4 inches. It has the 757 getting 8"+. I am hoping it shifts even further west to give Richmond a solid 4-6"

Its been in the teens in Charlotte in the morning and I really don't know how people live in this nonsense. When I was leaving the gym the other morning and it was 15 out (actual temp, not windchill) and the wind hit me, it took everything in me not to just curl up on the ground and die then and there.

3 years in Nebraska and I don't know what I'm doing out here during the winter. It was -9 on my way to work yesterday with a feels like of -25 and its just straight dry 0 humidity cold. Luckily it warmed up this morning and it was 12 when I got in my truck, nearly tee shirt weather after 2 weeks in the negatives.

Come on man, it isn't that bad. As the Canadians say, "There's no such things as bad weather, just the wrong clothes."

Also, Balaclava. Best $8 I ever spent.

Canadians are crazy.

If it wants to be 30 degrees and snowing you won't hear a peep out of me. Once you get into single digits and teens, its just ridiculous.

What else can they say? Their southern border is our northern one.........just about their entire country is north of Michigan, Wisconsin, and New England. It's cold in the summertime.

Canada was the first place I experienced 100ΒΊ. Sarnia, Ontario, 2002.

I don't think my thermometer has been above 12 when I wake up in the morning for at least a week and half now (MD side of the DC area). I'm on top of a hill and the wind chill has constantly been right around 0 degrees.

It's been so cold here that people are playing pond hockey around DC.

MFW it's been cold and snowy in Michigan for the last month or two.

With everybody bitching about the cold, I feel like I need to go over my layering lecture I give to people who don't seem to know how to do it properly. There are 4 basic layers and you can add more insulation or warmth as the temp drops.

1. Base layer: Tight fitting, moisture wicking, "long underwear" type stuff. UnderArmor Cold Gear. Wool or synthetic materials. This is where you want to invest money in good stuff. If you wear a cotton base layer, you're gonna have a bad time. Cotton kills when it comes to your base layer and your feet.

2. Warmth layer: Long sleeved, fleece, thick cotton, or Long John shirt.

3. Insulation layer: Fleece jacket/pullover, or down/synthetic insulation jacket.

4. Windbreaking/Waterproof layer: This is your shell. Keeps the elements from penetrating your 3 layers of warmth.

Finally, wool socks and boots. Cotton just doesn't cut the mustard because it doesn't wick the moisture.

So if you layer following these 4 steps, you'll be surprised at how warm you stay. Back in December I marched in the honor guard for our fire department's bicentennial parade. I wore a high quality base layer (UA Base 4.0), a fleece shirt, a t-shirt and a wool uniform shirt. It was 30ΒΊ and blowing snow. Between the 2 fleece layers and the thick wool on the outside, I did pretty well.

Second the above. Cotton is a terrible choice for most of your cold weather needs.

I'll add that a scarf/neck gaiter/balaclava are small things that really make you feel more comfortable in the cold. I prefer the first two because they're a bit more versatile.

Knit materials are great warmth layers. They do very little to stop wind. I see people freezing all the time in a fluffy looking sweater because the wind eats right through.

Neck gaiter, you say? Gonna have to look into that.

Its an essential for the real cold. I have a ton of them but this is the best one I've found https://www.columbia.com/thermarator-neck-gaiter-1556761.html Stops wind, still comfortable to breath through, long enough to cover my ears if my hat keeps blowing off (thanks Nebraska wind)

(add if applicable) /s

do you really want to look like this?

That's snazzy.

Turtle fur gets my endorsement. I typically wear mine while cycling and during long rides in cold weather, but I use it at other times in the cold as well. I love the ease of being able to pull it up over my nose if I get cold or to pull it down if I start to get hot. Cycling in cold weather is very hit or miss for me. I never seem to get my layers just right

I'd rather go naked than wear Turtle Fur. RIP TURNTLE

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

My greatest investment was some LL Bean insulated wool bibs. Set me back $200 but I can hunt Michigan with just those and jeans and come back home sweating.

Teamnopants if it's so cold I can't go outside without shorts on or I'll get hurt it's too cold a place to live.

I can add a ton of stuff to this list.

I'm gonna go ahead and start at socks though. Wool socks are great but if you're going to be inside then outside for awhile, your feet will sweat and ultimately feel freezing when you go back outside. Look at X-bionic socks. They're a miracle of keeping you comfortable when its warm and warm when its cold. I wore them in the truck to go hunting with the heat blasting on a two hour drive then got out and sat in a field when it was -10 outside feet were warm the whole time (400 gr thinsulate boots).

Last I saw, I'm looking at 4-6" here in the Outer Banks, seems like its been changing every hour though.

A little warmer here today, mid30s. Yesterday was brutal

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I was hoping to play golf this week, but the weather has screwed that up. There's ice here in Murrells Inlet and they say snow is on the way. Maybe next time HF.

I'm waiting for snow so the kids can go out and play before bed. It's been all ice so far.

I personally think this whole thing is going to be a wash...but I sure as hell didn't stop moving today until just a little bit ago.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Just started to snow here in Mathews. We are under a "Blizzard Warning" for snow and high winds. Unusual, that Blizzard thing, but there we are. Glad it isn't snowing in the 'Burg and hoping the dish doesn't get snowed up and interrupt the feed for the Hokies game.
Stay safe all, and look out for tomorrow night's chill.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

so interesting fact, blizzards actually have no baring on your accumulation of snowfall, theyre actually determined by wind speed and visibility both of which are a huge issue due to the strength of this low.

also mayyy have under predicted accumulation id say my apartment in hampton already has 4" guess im not going into the office tomorrow! wife is already off work

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Not sure what accumulation we got because of the blowing/drifting nature of the powdery snow, but it is likely in the 4-5" range at this point. Definitely blowing, though visibility isn't bad because of the lightness of the precip. Didn't get my paper this morning, booooo, and had to shovel a little for the dog, but I have a big pot of pinto beans and ham, cornbread and beer, politics on the tube and four books from the library. Also have a "most of the house" generator in case the power fails. We'll survive.

Meanwhile here in Ashland, we are closing in on 3... The roads are terrible. Nothing but a slick smooth layer is getting left behind by the plows.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Charleston just south of us got between 3-5 inches, NC just above us got same, just west of us along 95 got 2-4. They claim a pocket of warm air set over us preventing snow getting to the ground right here in Myrtle Beach. All I know is every kid in my house and our neighborhood might kill a weatherman today after they were to,d they could build snowmen and sled and now can just make ice balls if they want.

I suppose that is correct. Not going to have one in the immediate future, though.

Every road I took this morning (Powhite/295/64/Midlothian Tpk) in the Richmond area is in terrible shape. We got 2 or 3 inches overnight.

Mom reported from the house in Rhode Island this morning. She can't see the trees in the front yard from the intensity of the snow. Already up several inches since 5 am.

Update as of 3 pm, they have 13 inches and it is still falling steadily. Hang tight New England.

Rejoice! Beach weather the next few days!
