Jimbo Releases His aTm O-Staff; Moorehead Doesn't Seem to Make Cut

After leaving the Hokies, Moorehead seems to be in limbo with Jimbo. Not on the O-Staff, will he be retained as a 10th coach or headed for different pastures?

I don't think he will be retained at A&M. However, he has many connections back in Illinois as well as out west so I wouldn't worry about him.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Its always good to have Moorehead.

Even as a 10th coach.

Let's Go

HOKIES

I'm not one to complain about Moorehead.

Fire Whit.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I'd gladly take him back any day.

Did Moorehead go crazy on Twitter about kids de-committing?

Yes.

Wiles did a very similar thing, I'd take Moorehead back in a second.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

while I also think he was a great coach he wasn't looking to stay at VT before so if he took a job again he would not stay long again. Wasted hire then. Also we already have a very good WR coach that isn't coaching WRs, we don't need another one.

to be fair, he just read the writing on the wall with respect to the Beamer era and got out while the getting was good rather than hope to be retained by the next administration and then scramble to get hired somewhere after it brings in its own guys. And yes, I totally get the irony that the only offensive coach Fuente retained was the WR coach.

Hmm... I understand why you say that but I don't agree. I think VT was a stepping stone for him no matter what. I don't begrudge that of him in any way though.

Wasted hire then.

I agree with pretty much every you said sans this. The reason: after Boykin & Coale departed for the NFL at the conclusion of the '11 season, the productivity and contributions from our receiving corps basically nose-dived from '12 - '13 seasons. Players that were supposed maintain and sustain did not (Marcus Davis whiffing on downfield blocks and pretty much moderately aggressive in one-on-ones at most, Byrd couldn't duplicate the same kind of productivity in the slot position, Roberts' injuries took their toll, etc.). Enter Moorehead for '14. Ford & Philips start making immediate and instantaneous impact (in particular @ anOSU game). Our receiving game had been revamped & Ford+Philips were progressing faster than the trio of Boykin+Coale+Roberts. Plus Moorehead is one of the coaches where his NFL experience was a positive (unlike Groh). Too me, the benefits of his brevity far exceeded the negatives.

agree that Moorehead is good coach. Disagree that we need 3 WR coaches on staff to coach a single position.

find someone who is great at recruiting and will last for at least 4 years and that's a winning hire.

1K% with you on this.

Moorehead was a better recruiter than position coach in my opinion.

That's not necessarily a bad thing.

He was fairly aFORDable in that regard.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Honestly I don't think the events are very similar. Without Wiles' knowledge, a reporter was allowed to listen in to the live phone conversation on signing day where a kid informed Wiles he was decommitting. I can definitely see how a coach would say some less than ideal things in that situation. Moorehead had to type and send a tweet with the knowledge that it was going to be public.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

This. Moorehead started a passive-aggressive twitter rant after a kid (less than half his age) de-committed. It felt like a 9th grade girl complaining about someone who didn't show up at her birthday party. Wiles was tapped trying to convince a kid not to de-commit. Not a great look, but 100% different than publicly airing dirty laundry about a kid.

Heck let's get him, he was probably our best recruiter

I'm not sure how much money we are allocating for the 10th coach, but he might be too expensive.

The rumor is that Kevin Sumlin ends up at Arizona and if that happens, I'd expect Moorehead to follow him there.

This makes me sad

I posted that hoping you would pop up. Did not disappoint. +1

I own my mistakes

I will hold my comments until after he lands somewhere else. I don't wish unemployment on anyone.

How many of these are from Jimbo's FSU staff?

Only WR I believe. RBs and OL retained from previous. Dickey was at Memphis.

edit. correction, two. TE coach also former FSU

Thanks. Wasn't one of the reasons put out there that Jimbo wanted out of Tallahassee was loyalty to underperforming position coaches? And yet he only brings the WR and TE coaches with him. Interesting. How many of the old FSU coaches will be/are being retained by Taggart?

Jimbo apparently wanted some of that Fuente/Memphis talent on his staff if he got Dickey and FSU wanted Fuente. I would say we are blessed that we got a majority of that Memphis coaching staff after the 2015 season!

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Moorehead was a big reason the Hokies landed Cam Phillips and Isaiah Ford, and they had terrific freshman seasons under his tutelage. He did a strong job establishing a presence in the Washington DC/southern Maryland private school network, an area where VT's recruiting had not been strong late in Beamer's tenure. While I don't know how he would fit in Blacksburg (or if he left on good terms), if he was the 10th coach I would be very happy. I think that the talent in those schools around DC is better than in the 757. Ohio State, Penn State, and Maryland are currently ruling that roost, with the occasional SEC interloper.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but what are your thoughts on Moorehead vs Zohn??

And, for that matter, Wiggins?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I need to see more, but I have been unimpressed with Moorehead and Zohn. As bad as Loeffler was, Ford and Phillips were incredibly productive running a system that is much more challenging as far as route running. Moorehead helped land them and worked directly with them. Without being around the team day to day, I imagine that Moorehead has to get the credit for that (especially given the rumor and innuendo that Loeffler pretty much stuck with the QBs.)

I don't know if he left on good terms or not. Zohn is there for his recruiting, not his position expert (he is new to RBs and only had a short time with the WRs.) Wiggins hasn't blown me away, however I need to see how this group grows before I can make a full assessment.

My memory of the WR blocking was that it regressed if anything under Moorehead.

I also thought Ford & Phillips both made bigger strides as complete receivers under Zohn than Moorehead (but I recognize they had different palettes to work with).

Hasn't Fuente already acknowledged that we're hiring a 5th defensive coach?

I haven't seen that reported but if so I'd appreciate the link.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I would like to see Moorehead in that position, but I do not see him taking a step down the coaching ladder, especially with the amount VT could pay him. Curious to see where he goes next.

But what about his defensive staff?

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Jimbo tried to hire Aranda from LSU yesterday, but LSU upped their money and he stayed. Aranda is reportedly going to make $2.5M the next four years. Jimbo is on the hunt for a DC, and the pocket book is open.

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

It's being reported that they have hired Notre Dame's DC Mike Elko

2.5 million for a DC, this is getting stupid.

Is that 2.5 per year or 625k per year for four years = 2.5 mil

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

$10M over 4 years

no, it doesn't get stupid until we start paying the players

With Fisher hiring Mike Elko away, makes me feel better about our chances on Oct. 6.
