Yeah they got lucky there. I think they may calm down if their defense can contain Alabama a bit. I don't think Alabama's offense is that good though, at least compared to years before.

Probably more NFL running backs on these teams than you'll even see play in the game. Pretty sure UGA and Bama both have NFL caliber backs that can't even crack the 2-deep. If I had to put a number on it, I would guess at least 6.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Don't know how to embed tweets but there was a stat that said Clemson held Bama to fewest yards per play (in last years NCG) since our last game against them.
UGA showing to be the better offense in this game. I mean if they could hang with OU in a shoot-out their pretty good.
As I mentioned I don't think Alabama's offense is anything special. If their defense can't contain UGA then goodnight. Their offense won't be able to keep pace with UGAs.

I think we may have discovered the key cog in the Alabama machine. Kirby Smart knows exactly how to attack Alabama. Would be the only assistant to ever beat Saban.

Having the halftime performance at a venue outside the stadium makes a lot of sense. It is probably easy to attract people to a free (?) concert for a big name artist when lots of people don't have tickets and it makes the logistics a whole lot easier. I wonder if the NFL will ever follow suit.
College does have the benefit of just having the bands play inside the stadium which wouldn't be the same in the NFL... it would be kind of odd to have nothing in the stadium for a Super Bowl halftime.

Yeah, looks like these B1G refs are pulling hard to play the "If Ohio State didn't make the playoff it was only because Alabama was the best team in the country" card
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
My theory checked out, definitely seemed to be a lot of no calls that favored Bama last night. Ohio St would have made the playoff if not for the best team in the nation excuse is primed for 8 months of use

People saying that JJ will win the qb job because Fuente doesn't want to start over with a rFr or fr qb look at how the true freshman qbs are playing in the championship game...Fuente will play the qb who gives them the beat chance to win regardless of how long they have been in the program
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
If you can show me a place where someone on this site said that the best QB, regardless of class, doesn't deserve to start and that it should automatically be JJ, I'll eat my words. And buy you a beer. :)

Y'all notice that after Tagovailoa came in, Alabama hasn't called one single designed run play? Can't do that too long, or your freshman QB turns into Nathan Peterman.

Harsh for hurts to be benched in this game but as a die hard patriots fan I now know how everyone feels watching the patriots lose.
That said how does this performance effect future playoff comitee decisions?

Would Georgia be in the national championship without Frank Beamer this year? I doubt it... Shane obviously has a legacy of a father to help him and has escaped his fathers shadow to some extent, however, don't think for a minute think that Frank's presence around that program did not elevate it... Kirby Smart knew what he got by bringing on Shane...

No racism. I got nothing but respect for both the coach and the kid. I want Bama to lose badly but this kid makes a hell of a story. Especially if they come back.

Yeah I'm sure that was the initial weirdness after Frank retired, but he can come back home and chill with dad, who is now VT's lovable grandpa, and recruit territory he knows with less travel.

It's bad for the world. Satan gets another year of control of the earth as part of his agreement with Saban. Plus I'm hoping that with other teams stepping up Bama won't make another NC before Saban retires and he doesn't get the record.

Move to the Midsouth (west tn) and look at all
The bandwagon fans for bama and you'll change your mind. I have come to despise Bama. And nick Saba said genius has just shown it's soft underbelly. The inability to find a kicker
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Like the name or not the Pineapple Express just made Saban a fucking genius. Looks like Bamas gonna be the favorite to repeat for a few more years. Awesome damn game. Goodbye college football. I will be missing you.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
My non-French take: Safety had ample coverage underneath with the double team on the TE. He still bit on the seam, swayed a little to far to the middle of the field. 🍍 Express looked him off just long enough and threw a zip line pass to the post. That kid has an arm, Hurts is out of a job, and Bama will be a contender as long as Tua stays around, seems like a great kid.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Georgia was in Cover 2, the sideline go route is one of its weaknesses, bama was running a 4 verts play and the seam route combined with the bama qb holding the safety in the middle with his eyes just beats that coverage
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
No doubt that kid is a baller! I wonder where Jalen Hurts will transfer. Or will he stick around and create another J.T. Barrett/Cardale Jones scenario?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Depends on whether another college could use a QB who can't pass that well.
Matter of fact, didn't Phillip Sims transfer from Bama to LOLUVA? I don't remember him being able to pass well either, but the Hoos need somebody... anybody...
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Plenty of Power 5 QBs misidentify coverages all the time. The fact he moved the safety by looking him off means they either weren't really in cover 2 or the safety dropped coverage. Either way that was a pretty heady thing for a freshman to do.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
He didn't simply identify what Cover 2 looks like, he identified it, looked off the safety while standing stoically in the pocket and then made an amazing throw to end the game.
There are a ton of P5 QB's who cannot do that.

Tua Tagovailoa was an Elite 11 QB and number 1 dual-threat QB in the nation last year. Hailing from the same school of Marcus Mariota Is disturbing to opposing offenses. Last time I checked, Mariota was a baller too!

The theory that we can't start a freshman QB next doesn't hold much water. I don't know who will start, and I'll trust the coaches, but if QP is the best, start him. That's my take away from tonight.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Super well spoken dude in Tua as well. Happy to see him shine but we might be seeing alot more Bama, Georgia championship games with their talent levels. Hopeully we can build up to a playoff run in the next few years for a shot at these guys.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I don't recall anybody saying we couldn't. Several of us just said it is not a given. Furthermore, making program changing decisions based on what Bama can do with that stud roster would probably be ill advised.
Best qb plays period. Pretty simple.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The only way we, as a program, reach the title game again is with another Vick at QB. I believe we can catch or come close to Clemson from an overall talent and coaching level, but Watson was the dragon slayer for them last year beating Bama. Unless you have a Vick-level game changer talent at QB, the title odds at the beginning of the year are Bama vs the field.
We need to focus on overtaking Clemson. If we can get in their position with another elite talent at QB, we can get back on this stage. We will never, ever recruit like Bama though.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
And this is why Fuente is key. He's the kind of guy who will bring us elite QBs and get every ounce of talent out of them. We already have an Elite 11 QB in the fold, and star ratings be damned, when you get that honor, you are an elite prospect. And that's not discounting the fact that Hooker came in last year as being the kind of program changing talent we have wanted since Tyrod.
You have an elite QB you can win. We have a QB whisperer as our head coach. We are set up to make this happen, we just have to do it.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You do understand from a talent perspective Clemson is right up there with Bama right ? They've been in the top 5 recruiting classes the last couple of years .
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
They have been at a 10-15 level the past 6-7 years. Now they have started to recruit at a top 5-10 level after 3 consecutive playoff appearances. But they do not recruit overall to a Bama level. I think we can come close to a Clemson level recruiting to our max potential, but we will need a Vick/Watson to get to this stage.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I think the point of having a Fuente is so that you can field an offense with a Dalton and not need a Vick. You need a Vick if you have no offensive game plan/play calling ability. Would a Vick be nice? Sure, but hiring Fuente was based not only on our goals but also on how he builds a team and how he coaches that team to win.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
When he retires, they will back the truck up for whoever his most successful protege is at the time. If Kirby smart keeps it up at UGa or if Pruitt does well at UT, I'm guessing it will be one of them. I don't think their recruiting will take a hit at all. Until another program can humble Bama on a regular basis, they will remain king of the hill.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The officiating was fine. They ultimately let the kids settle it on the field. We even got a little personality from the head ref for not one but two coin tosses. Bitching about officiating after every single game of any kind these days has to stop.

Corners/receivers throw those facemask punches in scuffles pretty regularly and almost never get kicked out. Usually its a penalty and if they get another they are gone. I will say his looked a little more egregious on the replay, but I would have sent him back to the locker room after his sideline tirade if I saw it. BUT, that occurred around a bunch of what looked like low-level staffers, my guess is honestly that they just didn't snitch to the bigger coaches.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I said it was more egregious, and I would have kicked him out for the sideline tirade, and would have been cool with him getting kicked out for this, but I'm not going to pretend like I haven't seen full on punches from corners and receivers also not get them kicked out of the game, because that does happen.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You said "a little more egregious" after comparing it to a scuffle. That's a flat out punch and if it were any other game he would have been thrown out.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It was on a kick-off that was a touchback. They officials came running up the field to make sure it didn't turn into a fight. The replay clearly showed they were standing there, he turned around and threw a punch at his head. That kid should have been tossed. He ended up making a stop inside the 15 on a kickoff later in the game.
As for the tirade, he would have been gone from the game if I were a coach. And likely off my team.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'd say it takes a stupid person to punch a helmet. I have always thought the players should get a little longer leash in bowls and championships. The adrenaline had to be out of this world. I had a bigger problem with what he did on his own sideline than a little scuffle on the field.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
6 penalties on both teams. There was the no call face mask but that happens in every game, very difficult to catch every time especially when they ultimately aren't dragged down by it. He hooked a finger but when he pulled him down it was all front collar. Big miss, but understandable one. Everything else felt pretty evenly officiated to me.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yeah, except there was literally a ref looking right at the guy at the perfect angle to make the call. Also, the refs killed momentum when they missed the false start on the blocked punt and called offsides on UGA instead. It's a different ballgame if they make that one call right.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
How is it a different ball game? Its a re-kicked punt either way because it WAS a false start on two Alabama players, just a 10 yard difference. You can't decline a false start so the block wouldn't have counted no matter what.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Two Bama players false started, you can't decline a false start my friend. That block doesn't count no matter what, if it's called correctly its a re-kick from 5 yards further back.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
We know they didn't call the false start. What we are saying is that if the call is made correctly (false start) its a rekick and the block doesn't count either way. The only scenario where the block counts is if they make a different officiating error and don't call the false start.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You're right. You are arguing for a call that wasn't made, so who cares? Sorry to point out how wrong you both were on that play. How dare I call out an obvious screw up by the refs. They are flawless individuals whose incompetence had absolutely no outcome on the game.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I think the point was that they didn't call the false start on the Bama players, but did call it on the UGA player who wasn't offside. That blown call flipped the field in Bama's favor.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yes. I want an accurate call. But the penalty was UGA offside. That was not the accurate call. The refs screwed the call up, twice, on one play. If they had thrown the flag and called false start on Bama, then so be it. But they didn't. And the resulting blown calls ended up being a big difference in field position.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Fair point. I should have worded my comment differently. I was responding more to the fact that you were saying things were called evenly. My point being, they didn't just miss the call on Bama, but called a penalty that didn't exist on UGA.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree with you, but it wasn't like the guy didn't get an incredible jump off the line, it wasn't the right call, but if the officials missed the false start (which they obviously did) then it did look in the snap-moment like he jumped offside. It's not like they called a phantom penalty, it was just a poor way of handling a bang-bang situation, which they did get wrong.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Fair enough. I think this play in particular rubs me the wrong way because Kirk called it as a false start from the booth in real time, not after the replay (although the replay proved him right), as soon as he saw the flag. If the guy in booth can see it, why can't the zebras standing a few yards away?
I still don't think things were called evenly by any stretch. At times, it seemed like Bama's O-line was channeling their inner OK State. One play that I remember should have been a sack by #7 from UGA, but the Bama RB was holding on for dear life. They were also lenient as hell with Bama's extracurricular activities after plays.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree they were lenient with extracurricular, in fact, they were lenient all game in general which I am okay with. I would rather have a game be a little rougher and fewer yellow flags awarding first downs. As with most football games, holds were missed on both teams several times. I still feel like the game was pretty evenly officiated, with the caveat that the biggest miss did go against Georgia, but facemasks like that are easier to miss than most penalties.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
There was absolutely no reason why that facemask should have been missed. One of the replay angles showed the ref looking right at the play a few yards away and his head whipped around when the defender grabbed it. The angle the ref had, he should have seen the grab not just the head whip. But the head whip is always a dead giveaway.

I actually did quit watching at half and went to bed. I wish it started at 7 since the big bowl games always drag out for 4 hours with all the extra commercials they cram in.

I just wish they could somehow work it out with the NFL to have the damn thing on Saturday. Then it could go as late as it needs to and I wouldn't care.

That sucks that y'all hate a team (who isn't our Rival) so much that you couldn't enjoy an incredible second half and ending to a championship game. The second half of that game was fantastic, as a neutral observer.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Unexpectedly, I found myself pulling for both teams at different times during the game. There is a lot to like about both squads if one can just get past the hatred and jealousy. I really enjoyed this game. Perhaps even more than last year which I wouldn't have expected.
I have never had a hatred toward sports dominance. Even the patriots, a team I like the least out of some of the sports dynasties, can be appreciated for the product they put on the field.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
1.) I'm incapable of being a neutral observer, no matter who's playing. You're talking to the guy who once watched Grand Valley State play North Dakota for the Division II championship and went "there's nothing grand about Grand Valley State, go Fighting Sioux!"
2) I don't care if they're our rival or not. Yes, Saban and Bama have been good for a long time. They've played football at a high level for a long time. They're the Yankees. Duke. The Pats. I'm over it. I don't care how childish this makes me sound, retire and stop winning so much. As for why I'm sitting at a keyboard complaining instead of doing something about it, I don't have the financial resources to help the Hokies do something about it right now. So keyboard is pretty much my only option. (I mean I could stay quiet but what fun would that be)
3) Does it "suck?" Maybe. But there was always going to be a ceiling on my enjoyment of this game, as neither one of these teams are my team, and the fact that both were SEC will intensify the offseason circle jerk, while the rest of us just have to take it because they are that good.
4) I'm a Philly fan. We've kind of cornered the market on righteous hatred of most things. Anyway, I can feel the dark places that continuing to post will take me, so despite what I said up comment I think I will stay quiet for a while. Y'all have a good few months.

That's a fair way to watch sports and people can watch them however they please, but from my perspective I just wish you could have enjoyed that game more, because that was such a crazy ending. I haven't checked yet, but that little ESPN percent chance to win graph probably went completely haywire at the end of that game.

My opinion on the matter, and I might take some heat for this. All things considered, if VT isn't winning the title this year, then I'd rather see Bama continue to do so. We're in a rebuild right now where we know we're still likely another 2-3 years away from making a legitimate, serious run. When it comes to our competition, the devil we know is better than the one we don't. Having it remain Bama vs everyone else actively prevents others from taking that next step and makes it (even slightly) easier for VT to move up and eventually break into the playoff. I viewed Clemson winning last year as a bad thing for us, because it gave legitimacy towards a program that actively battles with us on the field and in recruiting. Having Dabo be able to flash that diamond studded ring allowing players to see their golden labia in the football offices gave them legitimacy and made them that much harder to recruit against. Taking that next step as a program became that much harder, and made our goals just that much further away from being realized. My hope is that, they continue to slowly slide back to the pack so that, when we're ready to really go for it, we don't have huge in-conference juggernauts blocking our path.
Bama isn't going to be this good forever. Saban will eventually hang the whistle up. Sure, they're going to throw money to bring in the next hot name, but as we have seen in places like Michigan, Texas, and Notre Dame, having a big payroll isn't a guarantee for success. When that chaos comes, I want us to be ready to pounce. I think we're on the right trajectory for that to line up. The last thing we want or need right now is for another program to assert themselves as the next great power of football, something Clemson would have been able to claim with a win over Bama last week.

Georgia fans aren't any better. They just don't have the vindication of a national championship. Alabama having one more trophy in their case doesn't change their fans much.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I know a ton of Georgia fans. They're definitely irrational, but none of them are douchebags. I can count the Alabama fans that I have met or know personally that are NOT douchebags on one hand.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Would any of them attempt to run me off the road, because they thought I was carrying a bus load of Tennessee fans? Nope. That happened with Alabama fans. Not to mention, a bunch of little anecdotes from us playing them in Atlanta that make them seem like WVU fans. They would be just as crazy irrational about UGA as they are now. They are pretty passionate. But they're not complete assholes.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
There is no fan base that you can fairly describe via an incident or two that you've had with them. I know a LOT of Alabama fans, and none would run anybody off the road. Even if they knew they were Tennessee fans.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Alabama losing wouldn't have changed the fact that Alabama has dominated football the past decade and their fans are going to justifiably crow about it. A loss wouldn't have stopped them from being douchebags, it would have maybe put a couple months delay on it.
A Georgia win, on the other hand, would have opened the floodgates in the Peach State. Their fans are already bad, that win would have sent them to another level.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It would have been another thorn in their side. That's all that matters to me.
And as far as Georgia fans go, would they be frustrating to be around? Absolutely. Would I have serious thoughts of causing them bodily harm? Not likely.
Again, I'm not saying winning makes Bama fans assholes. I'm saying they're assholes, who happen to be winning. It would be no different if WVU was winning NCs.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
At this point, you already know the Bama fan, and you know to stay away from the Bama fan. I'd rather we just keep having this one fanbase get that full of themselves (and really, the longer this goes, the more glorious the implosion will be once it all does turn sour for them, much like it will be for Duke basketball, UNC basketball, the Patriots, etc) than spread that kind of wealth around. Clemson fans went to a whole other level of douchbaggery after their win last year, far worse than I've seen with Bama. And I can only imagine the level of arrogance that would have been unleashed on the nation had Jawja won last night. Their fans were already arrogant, the last thing we needed was them celebrating a title.

I firmly believe this is the reason you were not able to enjoy it. Not pointing fingers as you seem like a nice, reasonable human being, just going off of my experiences with Philly fans, who seem to have some sort of mean streak to other teams, and Santa Claus, in the sports world.

Full disclosure: I dislike the fact that Alabama wins ALL THE FUCKING TIME. I don't hate the team or even Saban per se. I do, however, hate the ever-living guts out of Alabama fans. My experiences with them leads me to believe they are one thrown bag of piss away from being WVU fans. So, yeah, I will always hope they fail. Not because I want to see their team fall so much as to see their bandwagon ass fans choke on some humble pie.

I don't actually think that's true. There have been guys who he recruited that left the team (Xavier Carter after 2005, and I haven't checked on anyone between 1999 and 2002).

So is it too early to put tua tagovailoa in the heisman race next year? /s but only slightly. I get this weird feeling that he is going to be more than a game manager that most Bama quarterbacks. I mean give me Love, Taylor, and Tagovailoa as the way way to early finalists next year. As for the game good for Saban, maybe it is one more closer to him hanging up the head set or maybe its just the beginning of the downhill to 10. It was a hell of a game, and now the countdown to next season starts, can't wait.

I think Tagovailoa is going to be a star. The throws he made in a pressure packed situation last night were amazing for a TRUE freshman. I think from a pro perspective the only thing they'll tag him for is his height, but other than that, I think he has a NFL talent type arm. As much as I hate Alabama winning all the freaking time, I look forward to seeing this guy grow. He seems like a humble kid, that is true to his Hawaiian roots, so it's hard to root against a kid like that.......Unless they are playing VT.

Agreed and even though it is two years away he'll probably get tagged as a russel wilson type for the NFL. It'll certainly be interesting to see him next year should Hurts change positions/transfer/lose the battle.

FAM! Coach Beamer being honored before the coin toss!!
I'm pulling for UGA, but I think the dawgs come out more emotional than Alabama who is here business as usual.
Looks like you were spot on early. Wondering if they'll settle in unscathed now after Bama shanked that FG
Yeah they got lucky there. I think they may calm down if their defense can contain Alabama a bit. I don't think Alabama's offense is that good though, at least compared to years before.
I'm watching this in Spanish. "Fedank Beemert" was mostly recognizable; they keep saying "Dior-dia" for Georgia, though.
The J sound as we have it in English is very uncommon in Spanish, so speakers who aren't adept at pronouncing it get as close as they can.
ZBB is always great, but holy moly that anthem was incredible. Put the Super Bowl anthem singer(s) on the hot seat for sure.
Shit the bed on offense. Defense bends, but hold them to a missed field goal in the red zone. Are we sure this isn't a Hokie game?
Not gonna lie, that Accord commercial was super inspirational
Not as inspirational as the P&G commercial.
Wow...what a run.
How many NFL running backs are playing tonight?
Probably more NFL running backs on these teams than you'll even see play in the game. Pretty sure UGA and Bama both have NFL caliber backs that can't even crack the 2-deep. If I had to put a number on it, I would guess at least 6.
Are we counting Jalen Hurts?
Can Kendrick perform at the end of the first and third quarters too? Maybe some deep tracks.
Did they just say UGA hasn't had a starter injured all season??? That is incredible.
Especially because their starting QB was knocked out for the year in game 1. Fromm has just been outstanding
Don't know how to embed tweets but there was a stat that said Clemson held Bama to fewest yards per play (in last years NCG) since our last game against them.
We still held them to fewer.
https://twitter.com/ox_vt/status/950537711210893313
Just goes to show how good Bud is at his job. They still crushed us that game, and did sooo little on offense.
Got you fam
UGA showing to be the better offense in this game. I mean if they could hang with OU in a shoot-out their pretty good.
As I mentioned I don't think Alabama's offense is anything special. If their defense can't contain UGA then goodnight. Their offense won't be able to keep pace with UGAs.
Fromm may win a Heisman before he leaves.
He doesn't play like a true frosh. I think he will get some Heisman buzz next year with a legit shot as a Jr.
He's made a bunch of clutch throws. He's also had some ugly ones.
I think we may have discovered the key cog in the Alabama machine. Kirby Smart knows exactly how to attack Alabama. Would be the only assistant to ever beat Saban.
You mean run it up the middle on 3rd and 10 for a first down? Something tells me that not every team can pull that off.
Set it up with attacking the middle of that defense with the pass game first.
Fromm > Hurt as an all around QB. Hurt can run but not very dangerous in passing game.
I don't think Hurts is that great of a QB at all. Doubt he goes to the NFL as a QB.
Did CFB sprinkle some Beamerball dust on the field?!
I think this is appropriate at this point so far....
Anybody remember when ZZ Top played at halftime during our 2007 Orange Bowl?
Having the halftime performance at a venue outside the stadium makes a lot of sense. It is probably easy to attract people to a free (?) concert for a big name artist when lots of people don't have tickets and it makes the logistics a whole lot easier. I wonder if the NFL will ever follow suit.

Invite the NFL bands to play. Or some local high schools all star band.
Also, the Super Bowl has a MUCH longer halftime than any college game would.
Saban pulling Jalen Hurts, playing Tua Tagovailoa to start the second half. I don't think this decision ends well for Bama...
Hope so.
Unreal. Although putting up 95 yards in the first half would cause me to hit the panic button as well.
Didn't age well, this comment...
I'll own my poorly-aged comment.
Bama has too much talent and pride, but would love to see this turn into a blowout.
Gonna was hard with this officiating.
Yeah, looks like these B1G refs are pulling hard to play the "If Ohio State didn't make the playoff it was only because Alabama was the best team in the country" card
My theory checked out, definitely seemed to be a lot of no calls that favored Bama last night. Ohio St would have made the playoff if not for the best team in the nation excuse is primed for 8 months of use
2 calls, both incorrect. TD Bama. Why am I not surprised.
Props to that frosh QB for the Tide though, he just took over.
Alabama is so cooked right now. New QB and left tackle.
Edit: Guess I shouldn't have said anything.
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Don't speak too soon. That QB looks like he has some mojo
That Bama QB, Tagovailoa, came from the same high school as Marcus Mariota and an Elite 11 QB...
wtf.
Glad we have our own Elite 11 QB too! We see you Q!!
Well Jalen Hurts is hitting the transfer market hard tomorrow. Wow.
Lane Kiffin just got a good one in Boca after tonight.
Wow dude. Didn't even think of that... good call
Who from BW3 paged the officials?
Ya'll can hate on me if you want, but I'm a big fan of Nick Saban. And what you are seeing on the field right now is one of the reasons why.
Agreed. Ballsy to dethrone a second year starter in a national championship game.
Saban has very humble small town roots. And a set of cojones.
People saying that JJ will win the qb job because Fuente doesn't want to start over with a rFr or fr qb look at how the true freshman qbs are playing in the championship game...Fuente will play the qb who gives them the beat chance to win regardless of how long they have been in the program
I haven't seen anybody on this site even alude to that, just saying.
EDIT:
Tua throws a poorly timed INT in enemy territory, trying to force it. Sorry, not buying.
I kindly disagree with you sir
If you can show me a place where someone on this site said that the best QB, regardless of class, doesn't deserve to start and that it should automatically be JJ, I'll eat my words. And buy you a beer. :)
Jake Fromm, Tua Tagovailoa = 5* QBs, recruited to play in much simpler offenses than Fuente's.
Fuente's offense isn't all that complicated either Evans succeeded in a 1 read and run
Fuente himself admitted it was a simplified version of the offense he wanted to run.
I 100% agree with this, I just haven't seen any evidence suggesting that anyone on our roster is better than JJ.
SIC EM DAWGS!!!! FROMM HAS HIS OWN SET OF COJONES
Yeah. He do!
We really need some of these 5 star recruits.
Fromm with the onions!
Y'all notice that after Tagovailoa came in, Alabama hasn't called one single designed run play? Can't do that too long, or your freshman QB turns into Nathan Peterman.
Fromm is a straight baller. Saban pulling hurts for TT is insane as well but is obviously already the better true QB between two (hurts and tt).
May the best man win our QB comp in the spring.
How'd they get a sideline warning after they already had a sideline penalty on the TD?
The penalty comes before the warning. Duh. /s
They're two different types of penalties, I think.
48 for Alabama... you're fighting everyone out here, huh...
Strong right cross there.
Harsh for hurts to be benched in this game but as a die hard patriots fan I now know how everyone feels watching the patriots lose.
That said how does this performance effect future playoff comitee decisions?
Game is far from over man.
/ssssonotkidding
Saban's deal with the devil coming unraveled. Good lord Alabama players fighting coaches?
I mean it comes due at some point.
Serious question: why is Bama 48 still an eligible participant in this football game
I mean, he might never see the field again under Saban for such a fuck-up.
But isn't a thrown punch an auto 👍🏼?
We went after a coach on the sideline. Surprised they didn't just send him to the lockers.
Aaaaand he just blatantly clotheslined the returner on the kickoff. Guess ol' Nick will 'handle it internally' after the game. I know nothing.
Shove a referee (2009, I think)? Punch an opponent and fight a coach (tonight)? YOU'RE AT ALABAMA! YOU CAN DO THAT!
Mekhi Brown, Georgia 4 Star kid who isn't getting playing time. He might be gone.
Hope that Bama kid is ok. Not a good look with that much medical attention away from action on the sideline.
Anyone see an update on this kid?Guy's ok.
FYI: The Coach's Film Room on ESPN News/espn3 in fantastic.
This is the only way to watch a football game.
Jesus Christmas, the beaver paddle on Gundy is just... there are no words.
That isn't a mullet. It's The Mullet.
Georgia starting to run up the gut with consistent results. Oh boy.
Waiting for this freshman RB from Bama to do a freshman thing...
I'm just happy Mayhem is back. I didn't like soft Allstate guy.
I was high on GA taking this until Nick Satan puts In the Pineapple Express. Kids def got the ability to make things happen.
Jk. I would love the nickname if that were me.
No racism. I got nothing but respect for both the coach and the kid. I want Bama to lose badly but this kid makes a hell of a story. Especially if they come back.
Agreed
So I'm torn. I hate Alabama and don't want them to win, but good lord the recruiting ramifications if Georgia wins.
Shane for 10th coach? Seriously, anyone?
Read an article today where Shane made the comment that he felt he had to go and part of it was he couldn't work for someone else as head coach at VT.
Yeah I'm sure that was the initial weirdness after Frank retired, but he can come back home and chill with dad, who is now VT's lovable grandpa, and recruit territory he knows with less travel.
Does Herschel Walker have any eligibility left? Dude still looks 30.
So 48 punches a player, remains in the game, and then makes a big tackle on the kickoff.
I've never seen a punch thrown like that go without an ejection. After 2 sideline warnings on UGA how are you going to let that go for Bama??
So for all the talk about, "how much we can expect from a redshirt freshman?," these true freshman are balling out.
Disclaimer: they are 5 stars talents I get it.
TT channeling his inner Vick. Kids shifty.
???
I just love college football. Please don't go.
UGA... I can't believe you've done this...
Richt's plane was delayed, but he arrived in time for the 4th quarter
DEAD silence from the UGA fans.
Here we go. *edge of my seat*
How could you let this happen to us UGA!
Is it bad for us if Bamy wins again?
It's bad for the world. Satan gets another year of control of the earth as part of his agreement with Saban. Plus I'm hoping that with other teams stepping up Bama won't make another NC before Saban retires and he doesn't get the record.
Idk, as we start to recruit Georgia a bit, it's probably better for us that UGA sucks.
Fumble? Fumble anyone? Anyone have a fumble?
Am I the only one rooting for Bama? UGA fans are the worst. They literally bark at you.
You have friends
Well, I was enjoying the Bama meltdown & happy for Shane, but then switched back or something.
Move to the Midsouth (west tn) and look at all
The bandwagon fans for bama and you'll change your mind. I have come to despise Bama. And nick Saba said genius has just shown it's soft underbelly. The inability to find a kicker
Getting to be FG time.
Ahhhhhhh
One of these days Nick Saban will recruit a human being capable of making more than 50% of their field goals.
As good as Bama recruits, their QBs and kickers leave you scratching your head sometimes.
Holy crap.
Had a feeling he was gonna miss it.
You guys will just have to trust me on this:
called it
Poor kid. He will have to deal with death threats if Bama loses this game.
His social media is already getting them now would be my guess.
Ridiculous
I was gonna, that kicker is probably gonna chewed out and beaten like a circus monkey by his teammates for missing that.
I feel like Bama always has below average kickers. Just seems they usually run a guy out there that struggles to hit em when they count.
I love how one of the scrawniest kids on the team (excpet Joey Slye) had the opportunity to tell 30 million people, "NO SLEEP FOR YOU!"
That kid looked like he was about to implode on the sideline not very surprised to see him miss that
Ref having fun tonight
Even on bad plays Georgia still gets three yards per rush, as long as it's between the tackles.
Holy crap 51 yarder there?? Thought that sack was going to kill UGA for sure
Rodrigo Blankenship, ladies and gentlemen.
Defense better play like grown men here, because you can bet Saban ain't going for a FG any more this game.
Fuck yeah rec specs.
Also, I thought Fromm took a bad sack. But this?
OMG are you kidding
I am so tired of Alabama winning
Lmao, look at them U Dawg tears.
Like the name or not the Pineapple Express just made Saban a fucking genius. Looks like Bamas gonna be the favorite to repeat for a few more years. Awesome damn game. Goodbye college football. I will be missing you.
Of all the ways for that one to end. Saban black magic wins again. Can anyone find me a line on Bama's backup QB throwing for 3 TDs in a half plus OT?
Paging French for an analysis of that egregiously blown coverage on that play...
'Night, all. Go Hokies and Go Dawgs.
Georgia was in Cover 2, the sideline go route is one of its weaknesses, bama was running a 4 verts play and the seam route combined with the bama qb holding the safety in the middle with his eyes just beats that coverage
You can probably chock up #7 for Bama next year. They basically won this game with true freshman.
Did that just happen?? Safety a little late there huh...
Whatever you wanted from this game in terms of outcome, you certainly couldn't ask for more entertainment.
Both team played their butts off. Also, Tagavailoa can throw the ball.
He has the quickest release I think I've ever seen
Kinda reminded me of Kellen Moore. Short drop, ball's gone.
5 of the last 9... i've only been following cfb since about 2003 but has there ever been a program that dominant over a decade?
No. FSU and Nebraska in the 90s are the only thing that comes close. But this Bama dynasty is unparalleled in college football. All-time greatness.
Hell they could probably beat the Browns.
/s
Not in football. The only program I can think of in major college sports like that is Wooden's UCLA basketball program.
Red's Celtics?
In other words, no
Fuck this shit
That freshman QB is scary. He was asked what he saw and described the defense to a tee.
Well I would hope a Power 5 QB could identify what a Cover 2 looks like.
You would hope, yeah, but when's the last time Alabama had a QB who looked like he could do much more than just manage a game?
I guarantee you Jalen Hurts wouldn't have had the mind to look off Domenick Sanders the way that Tagovailoa did.
No doubt that kid is a baller! I wonder where Jalen Hurts will transfer. Or will he stick around and create another J.T. Barrett/Cardale Jones scenario?
Depends on whether another college could use a QB who can't pass that well.
Matter of fact, didn't Phillip Sims transfer from Bama to LOLUVA? I don't remember him being able to pass well either, but the Hoos need somebody... anybody...
Plenty of Power 5 QBs misidentify coverages all the time. The fact he moved the safety by looking him off means they either weren't really in cover 2 or the safety dropped coverage. Either way that was a pretty heady thing for a freshman to do.
He didn't simply identify what Cover 2 looks like, he identified it, looked off the safety while standing stoically in the pocket and then made an amazing throw to end the game.
There are a ton of P5 QB's who cannot do that.
You are correct sir! It was an outstanding play! I was responding solely to the comment about being able to identify the coverage.
Flip side, Trent dilfer called this guy the best talent he had ever seen at his level. He said similar stuff about QP.
Tua Tagovailoa was an Elite 11 QB and number 1 dual-threat QB in the nation last year. Hailing from the same school of Marcus Mariota Is disturbing to opposing offenses. Last time I checked, Mariota was a baller too!
Those trace Asian genes though /s
Bad form ESPN interviewing Hurts
but also not the least bit surprising
Yep. They gotta do the reality show thing.
The theory that we can't start a freshman QB next doesn't hold much water. I don't know who will start, and I'll trust the coaches, but if QP is the best, start him. That's my take away from tonight.
True but QP isn't a 5 star QB. He's got some things to develop on before being at Fromm's level. Hooker on the other hand...
BuT hE dOeSn'T kNoW tHe SyStEm
Super well spoken dude in Tua as well. Happy to see him shine but we might be seeing alot more Bama, Georgia championship games with their talent levels. Hopeully we can build up to a playoff run in the next few years for a shot at these guys.
Reddit wouldn't stop shitting on him for bringing up religion
Reddit gotta Reddit.
So how many guys still think 'we can't play HH to start the season against FSU?'
When you have talented players, they've got to see the field.
I don't recall anybody saying we couldn't. Several of us just said it is not a given. Furthermore, making program changing decisions based on what Bama can do with that stud roster would probably be ill advised.
Best qb plays period. Pretty simple.
College football >>>>>>>>> nfl
I fucking hate Nick Saban.
Living in the 404, I'm sorry but I had to share this tweet burn:
The only way we, as a program, reach the title game again is with another Vick at QB. I believe we can catch or come close to Clemson from an overall talent and coaching level, but Watson was the dragon slayer for them last year beating Bama. Unless you have a Vick-level game changer talent at QB, the title odds at the beginning of the year are Bama vs the field.
We need to focus on overtaking Clemson. If we can get in their position with another elite talent at QB, we can get back on this stage. We will never, ever recruit like Bama though.
Even Bama needed a highly skilled (freshman) QB to navigate tonight's game, so a certain level of "it player" at QB is necessary for almost any team.
You do understand from a talent perspective Clemson is right up there with Bama right ? They've been in the top 5 recruiting classes the last couple of years .
247 Team Composite Rankings:
Clemson: 2017 - 16th, 2016 - 11th, 2015 - 9th, 2014 - 16th, 2013 - 15th
Alabama: 2017 - 1st, 2016 - 1st, 2015 - 1st, 2014 - 1st, 2013 - 1st
My point exactly. We can catch Clemson. We will not catch Bama.
We were a clemson away from being in the national championship in 2011
2 Clemsons away*
There are 2 Clemsons?
As soon as Satan retires their recruiticorning will drop off and everyone else will have a chance again. So many 10 years or so...
Holy shit, what a game that became in the 2nd half. I love college football so much.
Trying to be nice here, but wasn't the officiating a little one sided?
Hate to say it, but it very likely changed the outcome of the game.
The officiating was fine. They ultimately let the kids settle it on the field. We even got a little personality from the head ref for not one but two coin tosses. Bitching about officiating after every single game of any kind these days has to stop.
Honest question, since you thought it was fine. What did you think about the Bama kid not getting thrown out after throwing a punch?
Corners/receivers throw those facemask punches in scuffles pretty regularly and almost never get kicked out. Usually its a penalty and if they get another they are gone. I will say his looked a little more egregious on the replay, but I would have sent him back to the locker room after his sideline tirade if I saw it. BUT, that occurred around a bunch of what looked like low-level staffers, my guess is honestly that they just didn't snitch to the bigger coaches.
Not a "scuffle"... this is one dude throwing a punch after the play is over.
I said it was more egregious, and I would have kicked him out for the sideline tirade, and would have been cool with him getting kicked out for this, but I'm not going to pretend like I haven't seen full on punches from corners and receivers also not get them kicked out of the game, because that does happen.
You said "a little more egregious" after comparing it to a scuffle. That's a flat out punch and if it were any other game he would have been thrown out.
I'd say it takes a stupid person to punch a helmet. I have always thought the players should get a little longer leash in bowls and championships. The adrenaline had to be out of this world. I had a bigger problem with what he did on his own sideline than a little scuffle on the field.
Yeah, except there was literally a ref looking right at the guy at the perfect angle to make the call. Also, the refs killed momentum when they missed the false start on the blocked punt and called offsides on UGA instead. It's a different ballgame if they make that one call right.
How is it a different ball game? Its a re-kicked punt either way because it WAS a false start on two Alabama players, just a 10 yard difference. You can't decline a false start so the block wouldn't have counted no matter what.
And Georgia got a good return on the rekick if I remember right.
Big difference between a recovered block punt at the Bama 20 and a returned punt at the UGA 36.
Two Bama players false started, you can't decline a false start my friend. That block doesn't count no matter what, if it's called correctly its a re-kick from 5 yards further back.
They didn't call a false start on Bama. It didn't happen. The call was on UGA. That's the point. The refs screwed up, again.
We know they didn't call the false start. What we are saying is that if the call is made correctly (false start) its a rekick and the block doesn't count either way. The only scenario where the block counts is if they make a different officiating error and don't call the false start.
You're right. You are arguing for a call that wasn't made, so who cares? Sorry to point out how wrong you both were on that play. How dare I call out an obvious screw up by the refs. They are flawless individuals whose incompetence had absolutely no outcome on the game.
Giant facepalm, over, and over, and over again.
But there would not have been a block with The false start. That is a blown play and can't be declined.
I think the point was that they didn't call the false start on the Bama players, but did call it on the UGA player who wasn't offside. That blown call flipped the field in Bama's favor.
Do you want an accurate call or not? The accurate call was a dead play and five yards. That is not flipping anything.
Yes. I want an accurate call. But the penalty was UGA offside. That was not the accurate call. The refs screwed the call up, twice, on one play. If they had thrown the flag and called false start on Bama, then so be it. But they didn't. And the resulting blown calls ended up being a big difference in field position.
Fair point. I should have worded my comment differently. I was responding more to the fact that you were saying things were called evenly. My point being, they didn't just miss the call on Bama, but called a penalty that didn't exist on UGA.
There was absolutely no reason why that facemask should have been missed. One of the replay angles showed the ref looking right at the play a few yards away and his head whipped around when the defender grabbed it. The angle the ref had, he should have seen the grab not just the head whip. But the head whip is always a dead giveaway.
Technically, if you think about it, all of college athletics is an extracurricular activity
You know a Beamer was on the sideline with that epic of a collapse on the national stage. Here Shane, you drive...
I fell asleep at half time, what happened?
I actually did quit watching at half and went to bed. I wish it started at 7 since the big bowl games always drag out for 4 hours with all the extra commercials they cram in.
I just wish they could somehow work it out with the NFL to have the damn thing on Saturday. Then it could go as late as it needs to and I wouldn't care.
One way or another, football always lets me down. Always. I don't even know why I'm surprised anymore....
Right there with you, man.
That sucks that y'all hate a team (who isn't our Rival) so much that you couldn't enjoy an incredible second half and ending to a championship game. The second half of that game was fantastic, as a neutral observer.
Exactly how I feel.
I'm with you.
That was one hell of a game.
This is a perfectly rational way to look at things.
But...just...fuck their fans.
Georgia fans aren't any better. They just don't have the vindication of a national championship. Alabama having one more trophy in their case doesn't change their fans much.
I know a ton of Georgia fans. They're definitely irrational, but none of them are douchebags. I can count the Alabama fans that I have met or know personally that are NOT douchebags on one hand.
Ah, but would they change if they had the national championship trophy in their case?
All I'm saying is that this result keeps the current status quo, fan-wise.
There is no fan base that you can fairly describe via an incident or two that you've had with them. I know a LOT of Alabama fans, and none would run anybody off the road. Even if they knew they were Tennessee fans.
Granted my sample size is small, but it's much more than one or two incidents.
Clemson getting embarrassed in the semi-final didn't help their recruiting this year.
I'm a Philly fan.
I enjoyed the game, I just HATE the ending.
I'm sick of seeing Bama win.
Saw a tweet this morning:
"Every single player that Nick Saban has recruited since 1999 has won a National Championship."
Wow
Quite the selling point.
I don't actually think that's true. There have been guys who he recruited that left the team (Xavier Carter after 2005, and I haven't checked on anyone between 1999 and 2002).

This reddit post states every Saban-recruited class (not every player) has won a national championship.
That guy can throw a ball accurately.
I want a QB like that.
Agreed and even though it is two years away he'll probably get tagged as a russel wilson type for the NFL. It'll certainly be interesting to see him next year should Hurts change positions/transfer/lose the battle.
