OT: Jemele Hill is leaving Sports Center

Hearts will break everywhere to learn that Jemele Hill is leaving Sports Center /s

Jemele Hill is leaving SC6, and going to write for the Undefeated, according to Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated. Deitsch says that it was Hill's decision. This move comes one week prior to the one-year anniversary of SC6, which began airing right after last year's Super Bowl.

Bye Felicia! I only watch ESPN if VT is playing or the New York Yankees. Their shows suck and I don't know who in their right mind can listen to Stephen A Smith's nonstop yelling.

Sounds like you watch a lot of ESPN am I right guys

This is good news! Couldn't stand her and that "fingernails on a chalkboard" voice.

Probably an unpopular opinion around here, but I found SC6 pretty entertaining until they watered it down to the same headline regurgitating crap that it SC was when Lindsey Czarniak/Jonathan Coachman/(insert robotic host here) was the host

Bye Felicia

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Well can we finally make it SVP and Stanford Steve at 6 ?

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

As long as they keep Highly Questionable, PTI and SC w/SVP I don't care what they do with the rest of the stuff I don't watch.

@vtscottyb

Highly Questionable, PTI and SC w/SVP

One of these is not like the others... I've never met anyone who likes Highly Questionable.

"You don't get the show!"

This 1000%, Dan LeBatard has the highest ratings of ANY ESPN radio show, now that Mike & Mike is off the air. If you listen to them regularly, a lot of the HQ jokes are related to the morning show. Dan and his crew (Bomani, Papi, Mike, Stu Gotz and Pablo) are the reason ESPN didn't lose much of it's radio listeners when Colin Cowherd left for FOX. Dan is great because they don't JUST talk about the sports games that happened the night before. AS you know, that shit gets old.

Pour some Beer on it

And when they do talk sports Dan and crew are usually approaching the topic from an angle that no one has talked about yet. Outside of the usual high jinks it's probably the other big reason I love that show

Papi is the shit, especially his raps during commercial breaks.

@vtscottyb

Sportscenter with SVP is my shit. I'm not staying up that late to see it, but when it's on in the morning when I get back from the gym it's just a fucking delight. I hate Maryland, but that man is just great.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

That's the only show worth watching

Ah, he's just a proud alum of his school, kinda like most of us are, and he does seem to like the Hokies, so I'm cool with him.

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

Agreed, that show might be the worst show on ESPN

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I leave my cable box set to anything but ESPN, because I know from history that i only ever turn the TV off and not the cable box too.

Frankly, I am horrified that Nielsen might pick up on my box being tuned into ESPN during the airing of Highly Questionable and think my household is actually watching that trash.

What the hell is a cable box? /s

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Well, ya see now son.. when a man loves a woman... and that woman needs to watch Ellen in the midday..

I actually gave up on ATH and PTI about 6 months ago because it was more of the same BS racists crap and political garbage and no sports that has engulfed the rest of E$ECPN. Has it gotten any better or still the same?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

BS

Nah he's gone, ESPN kicked him to the curb a while ago for speaking that dam truth about Roger Goodell

The Bill Simmons Podcast is a great listen. Check it out on Spotify.

Why is this news?

Oh right, because she said something bad about the president

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

To be honest I just don't like her, or think she is funny or entertaining. I honestly don't know nor care what she said about anyone.

Because one of the hosts of the "premier" sports network's "premier" sports news show is leaving?

ESPN jumped the shark, in my opinion, when they stopped actually covering sports and started making their shows about things thinly related to sports. ("Ooh, somebody baby mama dating his ex-teammate. Drama ensues..") It's now more like the View, the Real, Wendy Williams, Ellen, Jerry Springer, and Maury than it is about sports.

I quit watching anything that isn't VT related, ACC related, College Gameday, 30 for 30, or Cubs/Braves baseball. ESPN generally sucks as a sports network.

Or, for those of us old enough to remember, "After the break, find out what Ron Jaworski thinks about what Tim Tebow ate for lunch today!"

Manufacturing drama became their thing in the mid-late 00's, and that's when they lost me. I really only watch their coverage of live VT sports anymore.

Their baseball coverage is relatively not great either. I know they simply cannot and will not be as on top of every team as the local guys do (like MASN etc), but holy moly some of their stuff is just...bad.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

MASN is the worst. FP Santangelo is about as hateable as Pat Narduzzi

Drunk Gary Thorne is the best!

Maybe it's Stockholm syndrome for me then, doesn't bother me tooo much. But yes, he can be annoying. Ray Knight always seems like he just woke up from hibernation on the pregame/postgame stuff, but when he's in the booth it's actually not too bad.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I thought the trailer for that would spoil the fun and all the jokes of that. I was wrong.

That remains one of my Top-10 favorite comedies. If for no other reason, than the excellent way it satirizes Hollywood!

Do you remember when Rob Dibble was in the booth? I used to dread watching telecasts because of him.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

So Robert Seidman addressed this on one of his podcast episodes, and argued that taking coverage/funding away baseball was pretty savvy move by ESPN. Baseball is a sport where (the numbers say) people only care about their team (unlike the NBA or NFL or College football). Fans are more interested in watching post game analysis from the local crew than a national crew (exception being playoffs or records being broken, etc). I'll link the podcast if I can find it.

Me and this thread.

Was I the only one who had to follow the link to see if they have ever seen Jemele Hill?

I never saw her on ESPN, So I am not going to miss her.

I never watch ESPN unless live football is on. I don't care for any of their talking heads shows. Not for any for or against thing. I just don't feel like listening to a bunch of people arguing and yelling. That is the reason I don't watch a lot of stuff on TV any more.

Agreed.

I myself listen to SXM Channel 84, when I want to hear discussions on sports. Particularly the one I'm most passionate about: The FBS.

No, but I did not bother to do that until I read your comment. I've never watched her either.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I wish espn would just show sports, highlights, and countdown/gameday. everything else is fairly worthless because they always seem to discuss everything but sports.

Because people stopped watching that. Once people could get highlights and score updates on their computer or phones, the ratings for sports highlight shows plummeted. People didn't have to watch highlights of games they didn't care about in order to see the score/highlight of the game they wanted to see. Since then, they've been tinkering with formats in order to keep viewers engaged with varying degrees of success.

Make ESPN Great Again!

Some people just can't get past the fact that times change and people can get their content elsewhere. Same reason Blockbuster is no more because of Netflix and why I read recently that Walmart is panicking behind the scenes because Amazon is significantly cutting into their bottom line (leading to the closure of hundreds of Sam's Club locations last week)

Make ESPN Great Again!

That's enough of the passive-aggressive political references, thank you. If I wanted that crap, I'd watch ESPN.

Alum always pushes the line in this direction.

Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice.

everything else is fairly worthless because they always seem to discuss everything but sports.

The numbers say otherwise unfortunately.

The numbers always workout? s/

AND THE MASSES REJOICE! I have been actively going out of my way to immediately change the station upon hearing her voice since her arrival. Now I can go back to relaxing and sometimes watching ESPN again.

Thank god.... one small step for ESPN, one giant leap for Sportscenter at 6 pm!

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Honest question for those complaining about ESPN... what the hell else would you put on your network for 12 hours while most people are working or at school?

Studio shows are relatively cheap to produce, and there's not any relevant sports that air from 7 am to 7 pm during the week in the US. That's why all these talking head shows exist in the first place.

Back in my day we just watched the same Sportscenter over and over until OTL came on in the afternoon and we liked it.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Don't forget the bowling and the lumberjack competitions.

I miss the 90s and early 2000s when the slow times were dedicated almost solely to the lumberjack challenges and World's Strongest Man. I always thought "I could probably throw a keg that far..."

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Ah yes. Watching the GOAT destroy the competition before going to the gym was a great pre-workout ritual.

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

The kids these days (yes the kids - b/c the adults are at work) get bored with this stuff, and thus ratings suffer.

Coming soon to ESPN at 2PM: The World Tide-Pod Eating Championship!

That would be less mind-killing than watching The World Series of Poker. Again.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

And much more mouth-watering than the Nathans Hot Dog Contest

I tell you what though... NOTHING is beating the Spelling Bee.

(no /s)

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

The poker thing really kills me. Why not then show the World Scrabble Championships? Maybe they already have, along with the World Spelling B Championships. I don't get showing that stuff on a channel that is supposed to be all-sports.

There are plenty of sporting competitions that they used to show as filler, but no longer show, having been replaced by a bunch of games, like poker, and talking head shows designed to make things interesting. You mean there aren't any curling events in Saskatoon they can't show?

I also think ESPN has been a victim of competition, with all the cable networks and regional all-sports networks, not to mention Fox, CBS, and NBC having their own all-sports channels.

I must say, I like a lot of their '30 for 30' segments, though. Kudos to them for those productions.

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

The problem is that there's a linear network to fill with programming that doesn't exist at that timeslot. The era of appointment tv is over, TiVo and Netflix/Amazon/Hulu have killed it. ESPN is finally realizing this, and has been (not so) quietly upgrading their streaming presence. They're just milking what's left of their network carriage rates until they expire, and the follow-on rates aren't enough to maintain the linear network. I don't expect ESPN to be a wholly streaming product; there will be a linear ESPN network for quite some time, as long as people still subscribe to cable. But it's not going to be the centerpiece of the ESPN universe in the next ten years.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

It wouldn't make sense for ESPN to be a wholly streaming product anyway.

Despite the fact that live sports have seen drops in viewership just like TV programming across the board, they haven't dropped as precipitously. Live events like sports & awards shows still have cache with advertisers. While not wholly "DVR-proof," these types of televised events are as close to appointment TV is now compared to scripted programming at its peak.

It wouldn't make sense for ESPN to be a wholly streaming product anyway.

It doesn't yet... but I think it could make sense soon. 5-10 years soon. Advertising is changing. Airing over the internet allows companies to capture data about your viewing habits. Not only can algorithms be designed to market specifically to you, just wait until mainstream advertising becomes interactive - You're watching the super bowl, and a Papa John's commercial comes up, and half way through the commercial, a button comes up, and you press that button and it will deliver a pizza to your home.

The game is changing, it's just a matter of time until someone rocks the boat enough to shake up the whole industry.

I haven't really watched ESPN since they got rid of Max Kellerman (Loved Around the Horn).

That and my other favorite ESPN personality lost his battle with cancer. RIP Stuart Scott.

Kellerman is still there. He's the guy Stephen A yells at on first take.

I noticed he has returned, but he did leave for a few years.

Has ESPN ever experimented with a show dedicated solely to breaking down film? I would think that there would be some interest in that. It obviously wouldn't be a huge ratings puller, but I would watch of they could make it visually friendly.

Give me a coaches' roundtable show like they do for the playoff, but it's every Saturday and it shows the best game at 12, 3:30, and primetime.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Might be a bit difficult to staff that roundtable, though, considering all those guys have teams to coach.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Plenty of coaches not working most years to get two to three each weekend.

That should be blue and orange plaid.

No way. I don't want to see that on TKP under any circumstance

This is actually a really good idea. You have lived up to your username

I think comments with 100 downvotes should be blurred out with text over it stating: "This Comment Has Gone Full Arnie" or "This Comment Contains Too Much Dam Truth"

I honestly have no idea what SC6 is. The few times I have put it on ESPN outside of a football or basketball game, it is hard to tune in over 5 seconds.

I think I can sum up the reaction of many of us when I say "who?"

I don't always agree with Colin Cowherd but the man will forever be near to my heart for this video alone.

Penchant for buggery

What adult with a job would watch that anyway? I guess pushing that political agenda is working out well for ESPN.
