Fuente Given One-Year Contract Extension, Scott Promoted to Co-DC

Looks like Fuente just got a contract extension: http://www.dailypress.com/sports/dp-spt-fuente-hokies-contract-extension....

Virginia Tech football coach Justin Fuente brushed aside overtures from other schools last year, loyalty that the Hokies have proactively rewarded.

Athletic director Whit Babcock announced Tuesday that the school has enhanced Fuente's contract for the second time in nine months while also bumping pay for assistant coaches and support staff.

Tech extended Fuente's deal one year, through 2024, and increased his compensation with twice-yearly retention bonuses. Payable each April 1 and Aug. 1, those bonuses vary between $250,000 and $300,000, or $500,000 and $600,000 annually.

The contract guarantees Fuente $30.5 million over the next seven seasons, average annual pay, before performance bonuses, of $4.36 million. His guaranteed pay starts at $4 million in 2018 and caps at $5.0 million in 2024.

Moreover, Fuente is promoting assistant head coach and safeties coach Galen Scott to co-defensive coordinator. Other schools had approached Scott about a coordinator role, a source said.

Renowned defensive coordinator Bud Foster still will call the defense during games.

I thought Bud got a pass?

I wish I got this kind of a bonus.

Bonus? How did YOU get a bonus? I CUT OUT bonuses this year!

Clark, that's the gift that keeps on givin' the whooole year

Like the fact that Scott got a promotion. He could've easily left for a DC job elsewhere this offseason.

I see his promotion as he's going to continue to learn under Bud's wing until he retires, and then take over as the full time DC without having to change much.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Co-Defensive Coordinator? My gut tells me this is great, but I still can't shake the feeling this is something worth keeping an eye on going forward.

Per Teel:

Among Fuente's public-school ACC colleagues, only Clemson's Dabo Swinney and Florida State's Willie Taggart will make more. Swinney's average guaranteed compensation is $6.75 million through 2024, Taggart's $5.0 million through 2023.

The "we don't have the money" argument lost some steam.

The "we don't have the money" argument lost some steam.

And the "performance should correlate directly with money spent" argument will be coming on strong if we aren't winning the Coastal annually.

Let's see...10 win season, 9 win season...so far, so good, huh? Can we let the tale unfold?

Considering we added a 10th coach, the average increase per coach is only around $50k. That's not nothing, but we've got a ways to go.

According to this database, 20 school spent more on 9 coaches in 2017 than VT will spend on 10 coaches in 2018.

And leaves out how many private school coaches, or schools in states with lax sunshine laws so it's hard to get accurate information on coaches salaries.

One step at a time. An almost $1m increase is substantial for less than 3 years.

I would kill for a 50K raise over three years.

I'd kill for it over 10

I actually don't like the co-dc promotion. Nothong againat him. All for Scott or anyone to learn from Bud for the future, but reeks of "coach in waiting" moniker that I have almost never seen go well.

One of the beat writers mentioned he was offered several DC and other jobs this year. The title is another way to keep him in Blacksburg. Bud has been Co-DC before.

I get the reasoning I just disagree naming him Co-DC

I'd also be pretty sure Bud approved it.

We put the K in Kwality

Co-Coordinator titles are generally a way to justify a higher salary for the coach who isn't actually the coordinator. Sometimes there's an actual division of coordinator duties, like one focusing on the passing game and the other on the running game, but that's pretty rare.

Yep, make no mistake about it Bud is still the DC and will be until he chooses not to be.

To make myself feel better, I think of it as 'Assistant to the Regional Defensive Coordinator.'

Is coronavirus over yet?

I should have been a coach. In all seriousness, I know these guys work super hard and am really happy VT is working to keep them around. But I should have been a coach.

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

Quite a substantial up-kick for Hilgart as well. Hope that entices him to stick around even more, should other programs happen to come knocking. Dude was very healthily taken care of this go-round.

Good on you Whit, it bothered me that Fuente wasn't paid as much as Bronco.
