Great article on Quincy Patterson

The kid sounds like he's really an old soul (mature/intelligent/wise) in a physically gifted body. I hope the media doesn't bog him down with stories about Chicago. I really think he's bigger than the "inner city kid who made it" narrative. I hope he gets recognized for what's between his ears rather than what his environment looks like. I certainly never came close to a 4.7 GPA, and I was from the safe suburbs of Stafford, Virginia.

I think he really can be a special player. I hope Trent is onto something when he says the mixture of Cam and Luck, if that's the case then we have a special talent coming to Blacksburg soon. Initiate the hype train!

NICE!

For some reason hearing you call him an old soul cracks me up.

Maybe cause I'm old myself LOL. The idea of this kid stacking chairs at his own press conference is the level of humility that I aspire for myself. I'd love to be in a room with this kid and just chop it up over a beer (granted he's only 18, so that might make it challenging). I'm sure the conversation would last a good amount of time.

Maybe lol. Idk, recruiting is just so weird to me. Case in point, "old men" wanting to grab a beer with an 18 year old and just chat haha. Well, that's just the times I guess.

Link ain't working for me either.

I feel like folks are really sleeping on Hendon Hooker. Between JJ's statistically solid r-Fr season and QP's hype, no one is talking about HH. He's a little thinner than QP, but probably a little faster in a straight line. He's got a cannon arm and ran a very similar offense to Fu's in HS. He also played at a more competitive level than QP in HS (NOT DOGGING QP HE CAN'T CONTROL THAT). Further, it's not like HH was a low ranked guy anyways... he was the #5 dual threat QB in the country per 247 (not composite).

I agree with you, but I also believe it probably pretty standard among recruitniks to always love the latest flavor.

That being said, I can't believe the QB room Fuente has built in two years. I can't think of a time when VT has had four players (giving Kansas guy some props) that you could very realistically imagine starting at QB in their time here at VT.

I can only speak for myself and say I am not sleeping on HH by any means. I truly believe that kid will be a baller. Just wanted to highlight a article about QP so that all the TKPers could get a deeper look into his character.

I am honestly hoping he can dethrone JJ in the spring and allow us to redshirt QP. JJ played lights out for a freshman, but regressed down the stretch as he played against increasing opposition.

From what has been written about QP, it sounds like a redshirt is going to happen, regardless. High ceiling, no doubt, but a ways to go to get there, coming from a run-heavy offense. He'll need the redshirt year.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

If i remember right, I read somewhere they're definitely gonna let him redshirt in order to get the freshman weed-out engineering course out of the way.

It was a catch!

You wanna come to a super soft birthday party?

And I am all for letting him get settled in and concentrating on getting up to speed on his schoolwork. After his freshman year, he is probably going to be on the 12 credits a semester plan (rather than the 19-20 I took). The good news is there were some awesome engineering summer classes as well offered at Tech.

Fully support the 12 credits a semester plan. Yeah it took me 5 years, but my grades improved drastically when I stopped trying to manage a 'real' caseload and my 'alcoholism' at the same time. He's got the redshirt year anyway, he might as well take all the time he can.

Old sigline: I've been cutting back on the drinking.

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

The other thing is players are there year round, so they don't have to jam as many classes at once. They take summer courses to ease that pain.

I always felt those classes were weed out classes only because they gave you a glimpse of what the material would be like for the next 3 years after that. They were not nearly as difficult or time consuming. He will need all the time he can get every year as the classes only get more difficult. But yes he will be redshirted because he will arrive on campus late compared to everybody else and all reports talk about how raw he is. One year under the QB whisperer and he will be ready to go.

Yeah, I felt junior year was by far the hardest. Even graduate school felt easier.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Civil got easier each year. I also didn't have a lot of AP credit coming in so freshman year consisted of a lot of calculus, physics, and EF. EF material wasn't terribly hard but they seemed to give 2 hr exams in a 75 minute class. Once I got into the actual engineering curriculum the class either got easier or I mastered how to allot my time amongst my nonengineering roommates better.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

This. It took me quite a bit of adjusting my freshman year, going from not having to work at all in high school to going "oh shit this is hard and I'm not as smart as I thought I was". I can remember in on of my early physics classes as I was frantically trying to take notes, people beside me where telling me they had that stuff in high school and were kicked back. Once I got into more discipline specific curriculum, I did much better. That, and I guess I learned how to manage my time and alcoholism better.

If the kid is getting a 4.7 HS GPA, he could do those "weedout" classes in his sleep.

For real, they're nothing hard. Time consuming? yes. Mentally straining? not really.

Truthfully I am not entirely comfortable with how quickly this fanbase wants to throw JJ under the bus. He was playing hurt, had a mediocre to bad oline, and youth all around him. Oh yeah, and he was a damn freshman. He has some serious competition to fend off to keep his job, which is a good thing no matter who ends up winning. But I'm not convinced that we saw his ceiling last year.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I am definitely not trying to throw anybody under the bus. But I do want the best player to win the role. JJ picked up a lot of valuable experience playing versus HH had a year to get stronger, faster, and learn the system. The best player should be our starter. That said, it is JJ's job to lose, he has it now and should.

He also regressed as he got injured.

Fans drastically underestimate the impact of injuries on athletic performance.

The 6'4 230 lbs. is prototypical size for the NFL. He is going to get bigger in our lifting program. That's crazy.

"One school told him they weren't going to bother him with academics, and he immediately took them off his list," Erlenbaugh says. "I really appreciate that about him. He puts himself into everything he does."

When the Pattersons and his coach visited Virginia Tech, they met head football coach Justin Fuente in the parking lot. Before Fuente could even talk football, he guided them to the engineering building and introduced them to one of the program's top professors.

Patterson's eyes lit up as they toured the building, speaking a language few high school seniors could or would care to understand.

"In the first 10 minutes of the visit," Erlenbaugh adds, "I knew this was it."

Credit where it's due, Fuente nailed the pitch to QP. I've talked with QP and Erlenbaugh and they both recounted this story to me. (And I believe Alex shared the anecdote too.) Brilliant work to lead with academics and engineering. Patterson is easily among the most mature recruits I've interviewed. He has a great head on his shoulders. He really gives off a "special" person/player vibe.

Can't wait til I can tell people our football team is led by a R-Sr QB who's wrapping up his 5 year BS-MS in engineering while leading us to a national championship and trying to figure out if he should get that first round money or just go straight into redesigning the country's aging infrastructure...

For God's Sake, take the 1st Round money. I'd rather lose my mind to blows to the head from a defense than slamming my head into my desk repeatedly.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Insight into a recruit before he steps foot on campus. Those are the kind of things a great and well sized support staff get you. Fuente has assembled something special at Tech.

UNC, prob.

Prob?

That portion stood out to me as well Joe, I mean the kid came to campus to be wow'ed by his major first and foremost. If that doesn't speak to his character I don't know what will.

Fuente probably turned off "Auto-Save" then tried all the pitches until one worked, then reset the game to save his recruiting points for the week. Or at least that is how I landed QP.

Couldn't be more excited about this kid. Even if (somehow) football doesn't pan out, I trust that he'll be representing our school well.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

This gif is giving me a headache

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I just love what this kid is bringing to Virginia Tech. Not just the football program, but to the University. Seize the opportunity, QP!

This story is on the front page of CNN. Just thought I'd increase the hype machine a little more. The title of the link on the CNN main page is "Chicago QB has 4.5 GPA and 'Cam Newton qualities'."

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Do those 2 things seem somewhat mutually exclusive or am I letting his time at Florida color my perception of Cam too much?

and that link also has a 404...bleacherreport needs to get it together

4 Heismans and 6 national titles or QP is a bust. /s

Beano, is that you?

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

"I'm going where I want to be rather than where people want me to go," Patterson says of his decision to sign with Virginia Tech. "I'm happy to be in the position I'm in. I wouldn't have it any other way."

What an incredible kid. That article is awesome. He could come to Blacksburg, never play a snap of football, and I'd still be incredibly proud that he is a Hokie. That said... him being a stud QB here and at the next level would be totally ok too...

On a random note: Kudos to players like QP who never waiver, especially when the big boys start coming after him (PSU). He was committed from the beginning even with all the national press he's been getting. Then to take it one step further, his decision is driven for his passion for engineering. Love this kid already, even if he never gets on the field. When other players flip at the last second, or do backdoor last minute visits to UMD, kids like QP are set and ready to throw on the Burnt Orange and Chicago Maroon (pun intended). This is why I feel like we got a great one, he is mature beyond his years and even Coach Fu has mentioned this as well. Even better is that we have that level of maturity at one of the most important positions on the field. Hopefully he'll have an opportunity to lead this team with that maturity and passion for all things VT. #StartJumping

So didn't want to start a whole new thread, but got the chance to meet Quincy and his family yesterday. Really nice people all around. Quincy is a large kid. He is tall and solididly build. He also looked like he was stepping up to help with talking to a few recruits on the sideline and in Merryman.
