I've definitely seen this mentioned on here before. However, after the beautiful result that came out of Charlottesville on Saturday, this is fun to think about.
All explanation of the concept can be found there.

Its brings me joy to know there are people mentally melting down because this has orange as the VT color and not maroon.
lol@ all of that St. John's territory while being dead last in their conference.
Also @ Baylor
It sucks Duke doesn't have any land to take
Tech has Yellowstone which is cool. Plus a slew of great golf courses (Sawgrass, Doral, Muirfield Village, Bandon Dunes to name a few). I like our land
Everytime I see an imperialism map I think of Ken Burns Civil War doc and imagine coaches writing letters home from the frontlines. That being said I hope we continue our march to the sea in Durham tomorrow.
Looking at this map, we need to change our basketball team colors to Red or Green.
Also look at the complete lack of blue on this map and realize how little territory Duke, UNC, Kentucky, and UCLA have. In fact, it appears they none COMBINED!
Remember that time we lost all our land to Duke?
There, there. As long as they don't lose before we face them again, we can get it back in a week and a half.
Prophetic.

Lost the battle, but not the war. Time to regroup.
We got our land back!

all that WVu land makes me sad. However, the complete lack of LOLUVa land makes it all better.
Because I couldn't get tables to look good, I've attached the relevant data in png form:

Teams still holding land:
There are no other ACC teams holding land at the moment, so it appears that the winner of the ACC Tournament will end up with all the areas on this list, with the land owned by teams making the NCAA Tournament conveying to the winner. Depending, of course, when they cut off transfers. (Do they stop it at the end of the regular season? If so, I like our chances to maintain our holdings.)
And in case you're curious, here is a list of who holds ACC homelands:
DePaul - Georgia Tech, NC State
Georgia - Florida State, Virginia
Michigan State - North Carolina, Notre Dame
Norfolk State - Boston College
Northern Kentucky - Clemson, Wake Forest
Oregon - Virginia Tech
Purdue - Louisville
USC - Pittsburgh
Virginia Tech - Duke
Wyoming - Syracuse
Has no land for teams to hold -
Maryland, MiamiEdit: Yeah, Maryland ain't in the ACC no mo.
So you expect us to beat miami?
It'd be a monumental upset.
I guess UGA at some point must have beat someone. From what I had seen from their season, it seemed like they were trying to avoid that outcome at all costs.
Psst...Maryland isn't in the ACC anymore.
Giles county is back under Virginia tech control I'm happy!!
