NFL Combine Hokies Updates

Decided to make a "catch all" type thread for the NFL Combine as we have a large number of participants this year. Gives us a one stop shop for crowd sourced updates and combine discussion.

I have been doing this in the pre-combine thread

I know, but Joe always suggests we start new threads when we recycle old ones for new discussions. So I figured I'd give it a shot.

Teller with 30 reps on the bench press

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Is that good or bad for an OT?

5th for all O line. He's an OG not an OT. Worth noting that Saquon Barkley put up 29 reps.

Shorter arms!! Bench press is not easy for those with long arms.

Yeah I mean he's an absolute freak athlete too. There's more than one reason he's going to go near the top of the 1st round.

Teller with 30 reps on the bench press

What exactly does this mean? 30 reps at what weight? I mean, I haven't been to a gym in years, but I bet I could do 30 reps with 10# dumbbells. :) Is this 30 reps at max? 30 reps at a specific weight that all of them use?

They rep 225lbs.

Tremaine just measured in with an 83 inch wingspan. His hype train just picked up speed.

uva sucks

His hype train has so much speed at this point that I am worried they've set the bar way too high for his combine performance.

Wyatt Teller with a 5.30 40 on his first attempt.

uva sucks

Not to be a homer but looked quicker than that. I'd never argue with a laser but still. End homer rant.

I've argued with lasers a lot. Haven't had the chance to work with the combine laser though.

"Lasers"

Only as accurate as their setup allows them to be.

-Bill Roth

Can't I get an OG with a frickin' laser on his head?! C'mon!

Not great, but 10 yard split is the only important number for O-line.

Teller's 10 second split was actually slower on his faster 40 time.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

29" vertical jump, good for 11th for OL

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Teller is #2 in the broad jump with 114"

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Teller put in a 7.45 second 3 cone drill time. Currently good for 5th.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Not sure if this thread can include non Hokies, but my goodness, Saquon Barkley put on a clinic, 29 reps on bench, 4.4 40, 41" vertical, he very well might be the #1 pick.

Just wait till they see Tremaine's numbers on Sunday ;) But in all seriousness I do believe/hope that Tremaine will absolutely kill the combine. Athleticism is his best attribute, and even when his instincts aren't great he can use it to make up for his mistakes. The environment of the combine is where he should excel

Some moron asked a dumb question and we were victims of the collateral damage.

What a well thought out response to your million dollar interview question - very professional. That's who you want being the face of your franchise. Must be an English major at osu.

In fairness to him, that was a clown question.

And it's part of being in the NFL, or any profession where you face reporters and ask questions. Or when the public gets to ask questions. Like, "officer is this road with the signs, flares, cones, a giant fire truck and you standing here closed"?

Also his answer was bullshit, he didn't have a great day against the Hokies.

he didn't have a great day against the Hokies

21-32, 351, 2/0

I mean, he didn't not have a great day...

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

It's below his season average. Grier threw for more yards and TD's would you say he beat Techs ass? That's the comment he made that OKST kicked Techs ass.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

What is your end game? To get him to say that mason Rudolph didn't kick our ass?

He missed his average by like 20 yards. So yeah I'd say he played a pretty good game.

If you think Mason's comment that OKST kicked Tech's ass is true I'm not going to change your mind. I watched a different game I guess.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

You can actually have a pretty good game and not kick a team's ass at the same time, and that's what he did.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

He may have had a pretty good game but, he said he kicked our ass, which he didn't.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I'm agreeing with that statement haha

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Correct!

But at the end of the day he won and we lost so he can say whatever he wants because that's how it works.

That's the Kyrie Irving philosophy of life.

Just standard trash talk.

But at the end of the day he won and we lost so he can say whatever he wants because that's how it works.

That's certainly how it works when talking with Wahoos, right?

Yeah.

I think Dan Snyder may have found his next quarterback.

...beat the crap out of. What the hell is he talking about

He played Colorado in 2016 (won by 30, so ok) and Washington in 2014 (won by 8).

So, two problems...
1) They didn't beat the crap out of two of the teams he named.
2) Who brings up games from three seasons ago in combine interview answers?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

That's the spoils of war. You beat someone, and you get to say what you like about them.

Cam not running the 40, did we know this would be the case beforehand?

How far along is he in his sports hernia recovery?

Hopefully he will participate in quickness drills I was hopeful that's where he would stand out.

I don't see any results for Cam. Maybe he is not doing any workouts?

Undersized (but great intangibles), if true

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

Most of the ratings other than Tre and settle have our guys in the 5 range, or backup and special teams projection...

Tremaine with 19 reps on bench, tied for 14th best among LB's right now

1-0 every week

One less than the kid with one hand. Shaquem is now my favorite non-Hokie and he should be yours too.

I hope he gets a legitimate chance to make a roster. I think there may still be too much "old school" thinking in the NFL, but the kid can play

Do we know who gets Hard Knocks this year. He'd be great on that.

2 things about those 19 reps.

1. He is 19 and is further from his physical peak than those other guys

2. He has crazy long arms, so he is pushing the weight a much greater distance

Kam Chancellor put up 22 reps on the bench vs. Edmunds 19. Edmunds is 22 pounds heavier than Chancellor was at the 2010 Combine. Just shows how much of a beast Kam was.

EDIT. I should also mention Kam was 22 y/o while Edmunds is only 19...big difference.

Pour some Beer on it

Settle with a 5.41 40
5.37 on second attempt

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

DT's doing these drills are quite interesting. Settle is definitely someone who is mostly relying on his film, which is amazing.

I like Settle's film but we're all biased here

Tremaine Edmunds first 40 run unofficial 4.55

2nd unofficial 4.56. Pretty much perfect times for his size. Hype train being further reinforced.

Holy shit, Shaqueem Griffin ran a 4.38...

Jesus. That kid is literally killing it

Oh, dear God - who died?

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

But his second was 4.58 not a good difference. Hoping someone gives him a special teams role. Kid can play.

Still a great time for a linebacker.

The question will be asked why the difference. Still great time but maybe my point didn't come across.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

It's the combine. Unless you are a lock first rounder, everything will be scrutinized. I love this kid. I'd love to see him up in Seattle with his bro and Bam Bam.

No it won't, his time is an official 4.38 now and a slight false first step can be the difference in the times, these people know how finnicky these times can be based on technique. His first step on the first run was one of the best first steps I've ever seen, that is what will stand out maybe even more than the final time.

So the NFL guys who talked about on the broadcast who said, scouts and teams will want to look at the tape and see why the difference we're wrong?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Because it's an observable moment. They do question the players heavily bout any and everything about their lives/playing days, especially with things that are more than just discrete observable events. For example, apparently the Ohio State defensive players were bombarded with questions about what happened against Iowa, there was a lot of intangibles to break down there, were they unprepared? Why were they unable to adjust? Did they not understand the adjustments that Schiano was trying to implement on the fly? These are questions that actually have some meaning, perhaps it speaks to their lack of malleability to new defensive concepts on the fly. In contrast, the 40 is a short, discrete single event that can be quickly replayed over and over again. They might ask him what happened, but it will go down as something as simple as a bad step, and that would be observable on film anyway. Running a 40 at the combine is a heavily, heavily practiced thing, every single step, arm movement, and pre-start positioning can be the difference when you're measuring success in tenths and hundreths of a second. They might ask the question, or review the film to see the difference, but the fact that he CAN run a 4.38 and the fact that his insane first step on the first run is in his arsenal, speaks volumes to his speed and explosiveness on the field. So yes, they might review what happened, but it will be solved very quickly. They aren't going to need to launch an investigation to determine the difference, it's not like he took a 2 minute speed boost potion before the first run and then it wore off.

So you agree with me that the question will be asked but he will still be an NFL player, glad we agree.

Sure, there is a possibility that the completely no-impact and easily explained question might be asked. My point was that it is such a non-issue there was no reason to even bring it up.

Yeah pretty sure a 4.38 official won't be questioned. It's not like you can do that by accident.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

There is a photo out there of the clock stopping early, and him at 4.38 still a yard or yard and a half short of the line, so it should rightfully be questioned.

He's two yards away at 4.36.

Wait, are you really taking the TV graphic as the timer instead of the process the NFL goes through to make an unofficial time official?

Not necessarily...the on-screen timer started late.

But considering seconds don't work any different whether they're on screen or not, I'd say the NFL doesn't mind the kid getting a huge amount of publicity. I don't either...I'm really rooting for the kid.

I'm just trying to understand your this argument. Are you saying that the NFL made the 4.38 unofficial time official incorrectly for publicity?

If you don't think large companies would embrace a feel good story, then I don't know what to tell you. If 4.38 was the unofficial time, I wouldn't put it past the NFL to make that official simply because of the huge positive reaction his unofficial time received.

Edit - I mean, this is the same company that took money from the Pentagon for those military/patriotism salutes.

I have an irrational hatred of conspiracies so I just needed to hear someone say it.

I'm really not saying it was a pre-planned giant conspiracy. But when he ran, NFL Network immediately said 4.38 and twitter blew up. If you're the NFL, why not run with that? Does a LB's 40 time really make that much of difference in evaluation?

Not to mention the teams and scouts use their own hand timed 40's for evaluation.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

In this current age of misinformation, there is nothing irrational about hating conspiracies. There are large groups of people that STILL believe vaccinations cause autism and that the government is putting chemicals in plane exhaust to make the population docile and not challenge them (chemtrails) and the kicker, only THC protects your brain from the chemicals, bro! That kind of shit is so mind-blowingly ignorant (and disproven by science, over and over and over again) that there is nothing irrational about hating conspiracies, especially when that is just the tip of the iceberg of stupid conspiracies.

Either way the dude is fast, and his first step was fucking insane regardless of how the end of the run went down. Why would anyone care enough to go down this rabbit hole?

I think the dude is at worst going to be a very reliable special teams player, and his combine reinforced his usefulness there by showing his speed, strength, and quickness. It's not like someone is going to draft the guy before Tremaine or Roquan because he had a good 40.

I'm saying nothing about the kid, positively or negatively - only pointing out that there was a clear issue with the clock when he ran a 4.38 40. The discussion was whether or not that time can/should be questioned, and it clearly can if anyone feels as though they need to.

Any talk about the kid as a player or where/if he can contribute to a team is an entirely different discussion.

If I remember correctly, I think it was Mayock who said during the broadcast that when there is that big of disparity between the 2 runs scouts will often average the times.

Trey had awesome combine numbers too. I will forever wonder how good he could have been at linebacker.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Maybe even QB?

HTHokie93

You mean TE?

Tale of two Hokies: Bucky Brooks @ NFL.com has Tremaine in his Day 3 "Winners" while he has Timmy in his "Losers" category after posting some disappointing numbers. I doubt either of these results are a shock to any of us...

"Tremaine Edmunds, EDGE, Virginia Tech: The former Hokies standout has been on the rise since the end of the season as scouts started digging into the tape. Edmunds will continue to climb up the charts after a strong workout. Measuring 6-foot-5, 253 pounds, he blitzed a 4.54-second 40-yard dash and flashed explosive movement skills in drills. He changes directions like a defensive back while also displaying the first-step quickness and burst to turn the corner as a pass rusher. With Edmunds' tape perfectly matching his skills, he's more than worthy of consideration as a top-five selection."

"Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech: The big-bodied defensive tackle wasn't expected to blow up the combine, but his disappointing numbers will raise some concerns about his athleticism at the next level. Settle labored through a 5.37-second 40-yard dash and posted minimal measurements in the jumps (23.5-inch vertical jump and 8-foot broad jump). He followed it up with a disappointing workout that highlighted his marginal change-of-direction skills and burst. Settle's tape suggests he has the potential to dominate as a top-50 pick, but the sub-par performance at the combine could force evaluators to pause before giving him a second-round grade."

Either Tim just choked, or his trainer did him a disservice. He really needs to have an amazing pro day. People wanted to compare him to Dontari Poe, but good god that mans combine numbers were stupid. I don't think Tim needs to have a great 40, but his drills need to be a lot better to show that he is agile and has great feet at his size. For as athletic as he looks on film, he looked horrible in drills this weekend. For a guy that people were already unsure about and has limited film, this was not good for him. Luckily, he is young, his film is great, and pro day will be a hug opportunity to put on the performance everybody knows he can.

Is there someone out there tracking a list of players with bad combine performances and great NFL careers? I understand the combine, but I often think it gets too much weight in evaluations, esp when you have game film of players going head to head with other NFL prospects. You're drafting football players, not combine athletes.

I don't have to take this abuse from you, I've got hundreds of people dying to abuse me.

A quick google returns several articles, but I can't find a comprehensive list. I also want to clarify that I don't put any stock into the combine in terms of how a career will go, I just meant for his draft stock. Beyond that though, it just seemed strange to me he didn't perform well in some of the events and drills. He didn't look as agile as he has the past two years.

Someone on Twitter, I know, mentioned his trainer since he left school chsnged some of his techniques and things like that. For me what stood out was his 40 yard starting position, it looked different.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

If he changed those things and figured he might not be ready, why not continue to train and just wait for pro day? There are so many guys that don't do either some or all of the events. I know there are injuries but there can't be this many. Do some guys hold out just so they can get more work at it? Why didn't Tim or Rell bench? Why didn't Maine do most of the events? I don't have NFL network so I never see explanations as to why guys sit out certain events but compete in others.

Sitting out events is either strategic (if an event is deemed unimportant for you personally, why risk a bad showing in it, or perhaps not feeling prepared for an event, maybe your shoulder/chest has been bugging you and you don't want to bench and aggravate it) or based on a significant injury. Higher rated guys can usually get away with being more selective about what they do. I'd say the most common thing is higher rated players choosing to run their 40's at their pro-day. It maybe a simple as a comfort thing.

NFL combine is just fun. It is used as Mayock talked about, to "connect the dots" on people's story. Of course if guys have stellar numbers the fun can turn dangerous as GMs get intoxicated dreaming of what if this combine freak could play like he works out.

On the flip side are the guys whose combine performances trip a red flag or two. TS unfortunately has tripped multiple red flags. If his tape against NFL comparable performers is solid, probably can overcome the red flags as it seems clear he can improve his strength by hitting a serious program. If it is not solid, folks are likely to ask "will he get there" types of questions which is a far bigger problem. Personally, I would guess a guy who performs well against NFL comparable competition with those strength numbers has a future. A guy who doesn't is a crap shoot. With rookie salaries what they are I think TS will make and stick on a team even in the downside. He's just gotta doing the work and he'll get there.

Facyson and Stro both with 16 reps

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Since when did Wyatt Teller play for Wake Forest. No wonder the Redskins are all screwed up. lol Hog Haven

Looks like Brandon will finish with a 4.54 and Stro with a 4.49. Both were consistent and although not blazing, solid for Brandon considering his length is his selling point and Stro I never thought would be explosive enough to go super low. Also saw Greg on a couple drills. I think that's where he will shine as his change of direction is super smooth and he looked good compared to other guys who didn't quite have the hips he does. Good start for both of them.

EDIT: Officals were 4.53 and 4.48 respectively.

Pretty solid times for both. With Greg's great change of direction and Brandon's length I think they've both run well enough to get a shot on somebody's roster next year assuming they stay healthy. Brandon running a 4.54 makes Tremaine running the same time at his size that much more impressive.

I agree with this assessment. I wish Stroman would have run a little faster, but that's primarily because this particular year of CB's had a lot of really fast guys. There were a bunch of corners running 4.3's as I just checked the top performers list.

Rell with the 41.5" vertical, very impressive.

And a MASSIVE 133" broad jump according to snapchat (which also had his 41.5" vert). Biggest of the year so far from what I've seen.

Stroman looking good in drills, I've missed most of Facyson's by chance and looking away for work.

I've been rewinding to watch his. He's looked good as well. About as good as Stroman I would say.

One of the biggest things I've been watching is backpedals, it's one of the easier ways to separate guys. Stroman has been one of the fast backpedal guys, getting low as well.

Unofficial 4.48 on Terrell's first run. If he can get a 4.46 then the Edmunds bros will make good on their combined 9 second prediction.

4.50. Pulled up at the end though which might have effected him right at the finish. Hopefully just cramps.

I really hope someone reached out to Quin Blanding to let him know

1-0 every week

Once again ESPN just can't seem to get anything right. Good to see Terrell was a day 4 stock riser but how do you mess up his college when the link for his name takes you to Virginia Tech?

Terrell Edmunds, S, West Virginia

Scouts Inc. position rank: No. 10

Edmunds has an excellent combination of size, length and top-end speed. Edmunds (6-0, 217) is almost 10 pounds heavier than the five-year average for safeties, has 32 3/4-inch arms and his 4.48 40 is a borderline outstanding time for a safety. His marks in the vertical jump (41.5 inches) and broad jump (11 feet, 2 inches) are outstanding for a safety and both tied for the best in the position group. He also has massive hands (10.5 inches) and is capable of plucking the ball out of the air. We don't have a three-cone time, and ideally he runs that in 4.1 or 4.2 at some point, but he otherwise stood out. -- Muench
