Michigan / VT Series Cancelled.

http://mgoblue.com/news/2018/3/29/michigan-announces-changes-to-2020-and...

The home-and-home series with Virginia Tech scheduled for the 2020 and 2021 seasons has been terminated, with potential future dates to be discussed at a later date; Michigan has agreed to pay VT a $375,000 cancellation fee. The two programs were set to meet in Ann Arbor on Sept. 19, 2020, and in Blacksburg on Sept. 11, 2021.

I was really looking forward to this series.

Are you kidding? He's a quarterback whisperer. Who else could teach kids to throw that many interceptions. And nobody is happier than me with his record vs their rivals 1-5 with no B1G championship game appearances.

Great... I guess that means we get some shitty no name cupcake to fill the space. Fuck Michigan.

We're playing UVA twice?

Can't do that, only one FCS win can count towards your bowl eligibility.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Dang, wonder who we got dumped for?

Very disappointing, probably going to be hard for Whit to find another marquee program to replace this home/home series starting only 2 years out, no?

Well that is bullshit.

Buyouts agreements need to go way up. Need less of an excuse for a big program like that to backout of a competitive game, for a warm-up game, only 2 years out..

Hard for me to look at this any other way than Harbum/Michigan wanting an easier game and hopeful win on the schedule.

Really don't get the apprehension from P5 programs to play more than 1 OOC game against a premier opponent. I was really looking forward to getting Penn State and Michigan in one season.

Would like Notre Dame to become a full conference member or go the hell away already.

VT already has PSU on the schedule in 2020 and ND and WVU on the schedule in 2021. As fans we're bummed but I don't think the coaches are that upset about this development.

I bet Bud is a little disappointed. I'm sure he wanted payback just like all of us

He can take his frustrations out on Loeffler and BC when they play this year. (I know, Loeffler wasn't coaching that team, but I still want to crush them.)

Let's worry about payback to GT before we worry about Mich

No reason to worry about them if you're never playing them

You little sissy boy! Def Leppard sucks!

"Now Miami wants to talk about it." *Cue Enter Sandman*

We'll be okay. It sucks to lose a big time matchup, but in 2021 we were slated to play Michigan, WVU, and Notre Dame out of conference. That would've been brutal. 2020 could be better, but at least we have Penn St at home that year.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Let's give Whit a round of applause, he knew that the OOC schedule in 2021 was horrific and he convinced Michigan to foot the bill for not playing. Never, I repeat, Never play Whit in poker. His poker face game is strong.

1-0 every week

Let's just replace them with Ohio State...suck it Harbaugh!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Harbaugh won't even be there in 2020, don't see what he's worried about

He'll be looking at an 0-6 record against Ohio State if he's still around. Better replace Virginia Tech with Arkansas State to keep the fans docile.

If he does survive that long, I hope they lose and he gets canned in the first four weeks of the 2020 season.

It was a catch

I figured this means we have to play ECU twice now, each season.

I know you kid, but are there actually rules against playing the same team twice in a season (excluding post-season play)? Could you do a home-and-home in one season? Be kind of interesting, especially if they were back-to-back.

People forget that the Hokies have beaten OSU more times since 2012 than Michigan.

I would kind of like that. My Dad did his graduate studies at Michigan State back in the 60's. It would be nice to take him back for a game.

Not sure why everyone is so sure harbaugh is awful and getting canned soon. He's near god status in Ann Arbor and has UM closer to relevant then his last few predecessors.

Hey Harbaugh can set a new Michigan record!

I live in Michigan country and I haven't noticed any love for Harbaugh this year. The honeymoon phase is over, most fans are basically saying if he can't make Shea Patterson great this year then he's not as good of a coach as they thought (which he isn't, but Michigan isn't as good of a program as they think either).

We're already playing enough of Maryland.

I'd much rather play someone who thinks they're at the top of the Big 10. Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan.

Sucks to lose out on Michigan, though I'd prefer to only have one of these in a given year.

I'd be in favor of some Big 12 action. Let's get OSU, OU, or UT.

The best possible outcome out of this would be for Whit to work out a 2019-2020 home and home with a good P5 team. The 2019 home schedule desperately needs a big game. Use the Michigan buyout money to buyout ODU or ECU in 2019.

I would be fine with this change if we could improve the awful 2019 schedule. I can't remember a worse home schedule than that.

Speaking of future schedules, just looked way ahead...in 2027, we play Liberty at home...on November 20th. Why? Why? Whyyyyy???

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

That really doesn't bother me. Gives a chance for the team to rest up, before making it 24 in a row against LOLUVA. Between Liberty and LOLUVA we should be nice and rested for that ACC championship game.

Can we get aTm in their place?

Honestly? I'm kinda ok if we replace them with a decent but not strong mid major, or a weak P5 school. Those schedules already include Penn St, Miami, and @ UofL in 2020 and ND, @ WVU, @ Miami 2021. Those schedules are pretty tough as it is. Wouldn't be the worst idea to throw a couple sure wins on there, given we're trying to angle to be in the playoff race by then.

Not again, they are back to being a damned if you do or don't team.

I don't like that mentality. If fact, it's how Michigan obviously viewed us unfortunately. And with the state of the playoffs, I don't blame them. There is no reason to load up your schedule.

There was a time when they were worth playing.

Nothing in it at this point.

Sure, i'd like to play Boise again.

I've heard Boise is a bitchin' place to visit. Though that game @ FedEx was soul crushing, the Boise fans we're incredibly nice people and good fans all-around.

Why did they have to be so friggin' nice?

Oh, I know. The Boise fans next to us made that loss so much easier to take. It's like finding out Mr. Steal-yo-girl helped your grandma across the street.

That was the time to capitalize on success, not to lose nationally-televised games.

It kinda made it worse. It kinda made it easier. Their overly polite fans kinda forced both. It was weird though. Is it Idaho's proximity to Canada? I dunno.

And you're right. That was definitely an inopportune time to lose, and we most certainly should not have.

No fucking way! I don't wanna have to deal with PAC refs.

Are the refs that bad? Maybe I'm numb to it, but I've never really seen horrible refereeing that makes me question the game/ a systemic lack of integrity or football knowledge. Honestly if you leave the game in the ref's hands the only thing I can say is sorry about your luck. Plus I want to see Hokie imperialism from coast to coast.

I hear you about the imperialism part, but yes, they really are THAT BAD. The PAC refs are the same brood that screwed Danny Coale out of that catch.

Maybe it's cause I wasn't a fan at the time so I'm not psychologically scarred by that event and I believe short term memory is important in sports win lose or draw. Unless it's completely blatant and egregious almost to the point where someone has to come out and publicly apologize then I'm not ready to put Refs high on my blame list. If I'm being honest pac 12 is up there just for the uniqueness it adds to our schedule. Honestly If I could pick one from each conference it would be Texas A&M, TCU, Wisconsin PAC 12 TBD (hard to tell who would be good match up/ storyline)

Plus, I talked with the Wazzu flag folks at GameDay. Pretty cool. We were both dreaming of a potential Rose Bowl matchup as a semi-final against each other.

Oh, and they hate Washington like we hate UVA.

They have the weird little brother-big brother-actual rival dynamic that Michigan-MSU-OSU and OKST-OK-UT have where the the state school considers the flagship school their biggest rival but the flagship considers another flagship their rival.

UVA doesn't exactly have that going on.... maybe with UNC so they can jerk to oldest southern rivalry thing, but both of them know who Daddy is.

It would definitely sell out Lane given how well MU fans travel. And Marshall is a lot better than most G5 schools we play (e.g. ECU) and some P5 schools. The only thing is that MU would want a home-and-home. Given that Tech already has a home-and-home with Liberty in the future, I don't necessarily see a trip to Huntington being on a Tech fan's wishlist. I would like it, though, because of convenience and it's good for MU.

Just remember PAC12 teams = PAC12 refs

Unless we go for a neutral site one-off.

And that's a very likely replacement for whichever year we were supposed to go to Michigan, especially since our schedule is already pretty packed for the next decade.

I say we make things interesting and schedule Memphis.

I'd be cool with this.

I think it would have to be a 2 for 1 though. If we can't get a home and home P5 team then we need to do what is best for the program (i.e. $$$) and unfortunately that is going to be 2 home G5 games. I was going to say FCS but I assume we already have those booked.

I am more concerned about the 2019 home schedule but there is probably nothing we can do at this point. Our best home game is...... umm.... Pitt?

I would love to go to see the Hokies play in their stadium too. It would be a solid trade on missing out on seeing the Hokies play in the big house.

I think we should start some type of series with them. I would not say play them often, but maybe something like 3 times a decade. A home and home and then Bristol. Bristol should definitely be no more than once every 10 years. It would lose it's luster any more than that since we do not have a rivalry with Tennessee.

and then Bristol. Bristol should definitely be no more than once every 10 years.

Said no one, ever.

Don't get me wrong, Bristol was spectacular. But, that was entirely due to the sold out stadium, the fanfare, all of the events over the weekend, and having 30 friends and family there. If it was more often, I can guarantee it would not sell out and lose it's shine. There are too many seats for Tenn and VT fans alone. This would likely lead to other teams being invited, and I want this to be exclusive to VT and Tenn. If it becomes consistent, I want this game to be special each and every time it happens.

I don't ever want to have it there, ever again. Ever.

Thought you were saying you wanted it more often. Why do you not want it there ever again?

MOST of the reactions I've read/heard (game score aside) indicated that it sucked.

It was a logistics nightmare on all accounts. Prior, during, and after. I live an hour away and I would likely not do that again. Horrible.

I thought it was awesome. Traffic sucked, but that was expected. The whole event was a lot of fun. We stayed at a house in the mountains with friends and family about an hour out. We went to the concert on Friday and tailgates for about 4 hours. Shared some moonshine with Tennessee fans who were great to hang out with. Gameday was a blast. We tailgated about 10 hours with food and drinks all day. It took about 30 minutes to get to our seats which we planned for. After the game we tailgated/ slept for 2-3 hours to miss some of the traffic. Overall I had an extremely positive experience.

I would definitely do it again. I just want the event to be this big every time, so I think it would have to be rare.

I'm curious if we could move whatever one of our "cupcake games" to fill the Michigan game weekend we now have void, talk to a few schools and see if maybe they could do the same with one of their cupcake games for the same corresponding weekend, and then set up a marquee season opening type Labor Day games vs quality Top 15 opponent.

Bitter puts forth the possibility of a neutral site game in 2020.

From Virginia Tech's side, the 2021 schedule was always overly ambitious and, I'm told, was never going to stay that way. . . .

How will Virginia Tech replace Michigan? I hate to break it to you, but I don't think there'll be a comparable replacement to fill those spots in 2020 and '21. Like I mentioned, the 2021 schedule already features West Virginia and Notre Dame, along with Richmond. My guess is the Hokies fill it with an Old Dominion or East Carolina-level game.

And by that, he could mean ODU or ECU themselves. We don't have either scheduled in 2021. We have ECU at home in 2020 and 2022, so an away game there could easily drop in.

There's a spot in 2020 too, when the rest of the non-league schedule is Liberty, Penn State and East Carolina at home. The fact that there are three home games there and only one against a Power 5 team means it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to set up some sort of one-off, neutral-site game with a marquee opponent, especially if a home-and-home would be tough to cram in there in 2020 and '21.

It's not hard to reschedule the individual games this far in advance. I never trust the non-conference schedule dates until the entire schedule has been announced for a given season (other than the big games like Bristol).

We know it's happened before with VT. Our 2007 LSU game was supposed to be in 2004, but got bumped for USC. (We probably would have had better luck with LSU in 2004). The Boise game at FedEx was originally an October game until ESPN threw a bunch of money at us to make it Labor Day. (Probably would have had better luck catching Boise in midseason).

The 2013 Alabama game caused a ripple effect that took ECU off the schedule in 2012 and 2013. We added Austin Peay State in 2012. Then Pitt joined the ACC halfway through our home-and-home OOC series with them, which put ECU back on the 2013 schedule, and dumped FSU off. (Yeah, pretty much every version of that schedule has its downsides.)

when you hear blue bloods talk about their long standing rivalries and second and third most played teams, I'm convinced that's going to be us in 30 years talking about how we can't drop the series with ECU for historical reasons

Speaking of Meeshugan, I'm guessing nobody on here had any fucks to give that Nova obliterated them in hoops.

Nope, didn't watch but would have wanted Nova over UM.
