That's not as crazy as this:

Last 3-4 seasons we beat VT if we swapped QBs

No way they would have won in 2016 even Deshaun Watson or Baker Mayfield.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Well, it certainly wouldn't have hurt. Of course they would have been better. Swapping a NFL prospect for their D2 crap would definitely help.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

they aren't wrong. The difference at the QB position has been a huge advantage for VT in this streak. They haven't had a better QB since Schaub beat us in 2003 and even in the years when our QB play was down (zombie Brewer, 2014; Glennon 2006, third and Logan, Underhand throws only JJ) they were still much worse at QB.

Some notable (?) UVA QB names during the streak: Hagans, Olson, McCabe, Swell, Lalich, Verica, Hall, Rocco, Metheny, Watford, Simms, Lambert, Johns, Benkert......so which of Hagans/Rocco/Benkert was the best QB in that sequence?

And the last 5 or so years, they are rolling with a QB who transferred in after not winning out at their original school. Its one thing if you're bringing in transfers who are coming in as a step up after they proved themselves at a lower school, but they're rolling with guys who are moving laterally, at worst. You want a guy at QB who you can trust, and they're rolling with guys other schools have already said they don't. Not good.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

....like Michael Brewer.

He was brought in to keep the ship stable, but yes, you're exactly right. If we had to keep relying on the likes of Michael Brewer to succeed, we were going to be in trouble long-term. We got lucky that Brewer was a badass when he came over. For every 1 Brewer there are 2 or 3 Michael Rocco, Phillip Sims, and Kurt Benkerts. Its just not a position you want to be trolling the cast aways to find your answer. You want to identify your guys in high school and get them into your program right away.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

That same school blew off Baker Mayfield too.

Just sayin...

I will never agree for the belittling of Michael Brewer. This is a very disappointing comment.

A healthy Michael Brewer had the best road win in the history of the program. A beat to absolute hell Michael Brewer still squeezed out some wins that the squad had no business winning. While there were moments where he wasn't as effective as an elite QB, you never got anything out of Brewer that was less than his best.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Pretty sure that BigSmoooooooth isn't belittling Brewer at all. In fact, he is using Brewer as a counter point to Alum07's assertion that transfers aren't good because they couldn't win the job at their previous school and aren't good leaders.

I think they are definitely wrong.

Honestly 07, 08, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17 probably go to U.Va.

If they want to claim they would have won one of those games, sure, but they're saying they would have won seven different times. I don't care who's playing QB, there's no way in hell they're winning 7 of the last 11 games against us by switching a single player.

no way in hell they're winning 7 of the last 11 games against us by switching a single player

I think you're under estimating how bad their QB's were, and how relient we were on ours:

  • 2007 - Glennon goes 13/19 for 260 yards & no pics. BUT that was one of our best receiving corps in the Beamer era and one VT's best defenses. UVA was not able to score a single passing TD that game. It's possible we lose if we get stuck with Sewell at QB.
  • 2008 - Neither team passed the ball well, but Tyrod's 137 on the ground is huge. I think it would've been really tough to stop Tyrod. Again, I think the difference between Tyrod and Verica is so big that switching these two players would've swung the game 3 points.
  • 2012 - Another three point game, with Logan Thomas providing over half of our rushing yards and all of our points. Tough to argue we win this game without LT.
  • 2013 - Another ugly game where the defense and Trey Edmunds really stepped up. Both QB's played so bad, I don't think changing them would've resulted differently.
  • 2014 - Breakout games by JC, and our young receiving corp. Lambert's and Brewer's stats were almost identical, with Brewer throwing one more touchdown. Real challenge for the UVA offense was 38 yards rushing. I think our defense was so good, that we could trade QB's and get the same result.
  • 2015 - UVA QB with a 1:2 TD-to-interception ratio, Brewer with the opposite (2:1). They ran all over us, but it wasn't enough. A QB switch could've changed this result.
  • 2017 - Similar to 2013 in the fact that our defense (and running game) was so good, that a QB switch would've matter.

TL;DR - I think he has an argument for some of these years (not 2013, 2014, and 2017 however).

Edit: Just wanted to mention that we're a 10+ win team in 2013 if Kyle Fuller stays healthy, possibly even with just a single loss to Bama. 6-1 with Fuller, 2-4 without him, with three games decided by one score (one blowout in the bowl game with injured Logan - should've been a targeting call, but I digress). Sighhh I always get frustrated thinking about that season...

We were ROLLING in 2013 Defense was on fire and the offense was doing enough. I think we were 6-1 when Duke came to Blacksburg and beat us. Anthony Boone threw 4 interceptions that game, 3 of them to Kendall Fuller. Unfortunately, Logan Thomas also threw 4 interceptions, and Cody Journell missed a couple field goals one of which might have landed in the turkey leg stand between the south and east stands. That game sort of sent the team into a downward spiral that reminded me of the 2003 season after the WVU game.

I mean damn we beat Pitt AND GT that year before the Fuller injury. Literally don't know when else we have done that.

2013 felt so special until that damn Duke game. I'm not sure I've ever been more frustrated after a loss

I know what you're saying ... but I dunno ... there have been some pretty frustrating losses over the years.

The Maryland one right after it was worse

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

We were ROLLING in 2013

Not sure I agree with this. Yes, we were doing better than '12, but overall, pretty meh. 2012 prepped me for the successive '13 - '15 seasons.

After the loss against Alabama, where Bama scored 21 points off of non-offensive touchdowns, we proceeded to win six straight, including wins over Pitt, UNC, and GT. That was the last time we've done that in a season. Rest of the season was meh, though.

I still believe ML voodoo makes the QB switch irrelevant for the past several years. UVA QB play was bad no matter who was in the uniform.

I feel like our defense in 07 would have turned Glennon into the second coming of Hunter Cantwell.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Ok. I'll bite. So this begs the hypothetical question: going by this hypothetical & laughably imaginary scenario, how many hypothetical and imaginary Commonwealth Cups have they won?

Me neither.

The site owner has argued that if it works for Reddit, it works for Sabre/TSL. Well, here's a quote from the Reddit CEO on why they are rolling out a new design:

"Many of us evangelize Reddit and tell people how awesome it is ... then when those new people decide to check out Reddit for the first time they're greeted with dystopian Craigslist. We'd like to fix that."

The funny thing is that TSL went to a modern format about 5 years ago, but reverted back when enough of the userbase revolted. So yeah, they're intentionally keeping the 1995 era formatting because the users aren't willing to adapt.

I'm on Reddit x100 more than TKP and I can tell you that their format is nothing like The Sabre's. I don't see how they think it's similar. In fact I prefer reddits format to this format.

This was gold...

We've had a lot of running QBs
Unfortunately, they've been running for their lives.

I really dislike hypothetical situations like this that someone tries to turn into actual statements or facts. If they had Cam Newton back there last year, and we had our same defense, but also had Jerod, Bucky, and Ford we still win and I don't think it's close.

Did I do that right?

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

If Al Groh would have had Bud Foster as his DC, would UVA have beaten VT before Bud bitchslapped Al?

Great question, but I only took a few philosophy courses for fun so couldn't begin to answer it.

Also, would their QBs be as crappy if they played for VT?

Let's Go...

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

If they traded coaches, schools, student bodies, players, work effort, and general attitude, they would be better in all things, maybe not better than us, but better than they are now.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

That site is such a steaming piece of shit.

And I'm not even referring to turd-like content.

My whole argument is the disaster that is UVA's coaching staff would've ruined any qb they put in there. The issue is beyond just the qb, its their line play (who in turn ruins the qb), their running game, their receivers....I mean my god they have a ton of issues. Good players around a qb can make a qb look a lot better, its not like we're putting vick out there each year, and its not like UVA could develop them like we do anyway

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

This a million times.

Give them Tyrod and time cop would have pulled him in the first to try and surprise Tech's defense with a less dynamic Qb. They had good enough players to win games in the past but the coaching staff and culture they created destroyed all potential. We should not underestimate that their big whistle(s) contributed much more to their garbage results as any single player. Let's hope Bronco lets the tradition live.

... except as opposed to time cop, Bronco can't recruit. This is a last place program for years to come with London's better players all pretty much gone.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Hence, #SAVEBRONCO

Yeah, that's the literal argument. it doesn't matter, your whole program is a dumpster fire, etc, etc.

But the theoretical point isn't a terrible one, their QB play has been so bad that they couldn't even beat us when we were down and they weren't competitive when we were good. That's how a team runs up a 57 game winning streak or whatever it is.

It's not easy for them to lose year after year, it's a concerted effort across the board on their part.

Last year they had a QB who was instrumental in putting 21 on Miami in the 1st half. At that point they were touting their outstanding QB and how the game against VT would be different, this year, due to superior QB play. Now those clowns want to profess that swapping QB's would have won the game?

The premise is laughable, because even if they had recruited a much better QB or actually landed the QB recruit we wanted, that wouldn't mean we would end up with their QB or a bad QB. We would've recruited our next choice or another QB on our roster could've won the starting job.

It's funny that the only way they could see themselves beating VT - isn't by simply improving the QB play on their squad, but by improving the QB play on their squad while simultaneously weakening the QB play on our squad.

So what you're saying is Wahoos be all over "we would have won" scenarios like:

"It's a Hokie takeover of The Hill ... in Charlottesville!" -Bill Roth

fun fact: once again this year, LOLUVa has scheduled their spring game for the same day as foxfield races. For those of you unfamiliar with the event, Foxfield is a steeple chase race just outside charlottesville where local folks and students get together, dress all fancy, and get drunk and obnoxious. As you can imagine, this draws from the same demographic as any LOLUVa sporting event. So all five of the fans that might go to the spring game are instead going to go to the races.

Big difference, though, is that Foxfield is actually a hoot. You sorta get to see the 'lolhoova thing distilled down to its most concentrated essence. Once was enough, but I'm glad I saw it for myself. And, the horses were fun to watch when I could keep my eyes off the crowd.
