NCAA committee tables redshirt rule and bans former players from practicing

While the decision by the NCAA's Division I Council to table a proposal that would have allowed football players to play up to four games in a season without losing eligibility was disappointing, there's still a belief that the measure will get approval in June that according to the head of the American Football Coaches Association.

Not sure why this didn't pass it has overwhelming support from coaches.

Both the Division I and Division II groups adopted proposals that prevent former players from taking part in practices at their former schools.

In a statement Wednesday, the NCAA said "the proposal is intended to negate competitive and recruiting advantages schools potentially could gain by allowing former student-athletes to practice with the current team.

This rule I think is a direct response to Bama and Clemson using former players like Watson at Clemson to practice and then being a recruiting tool.

That just means they can't practice with the team right? Can they come back and use the facilities when players aren't there? Shayne Graham used to come back and kick some.

Personally, I would like to the NCAA use the non-CFP (or even non-NY6) bowl games as a way to test out new rules (kind of like the NIT in basketball this year). Allow redshirts to play in bowl games (I don't think they need 4 games a season, one is enough), test out the new kickoff rule in bowl games, etc.

FWIW, It's not just Bama and Clemson, I remember seeing Cal was using Marshawn Williams. I recall seeing other schools listed too.
