Former VT President Charles Steger passed away last night.

Virginia Tech President Emeritus Charles William Steger Jr., who led Virginia Tech through a period of unprecedented growth and historic transformation into one of the nation's leading research universities, died Sunday evening, May 6, at his home in Blacksburg, Virginia. He was 70.

Serving as the university's 15th president from 2000 to 2014, Steger was entirely committed to the institution where he received three degrees and spent nearly all of his more than 40-year professional career. He is regarded as one of Virginia Tech's most influential presidents in its 146-year history, having led the institution amid drastic reductions in state funding for public higher education and the unimaginable tragedy of April 16, 2007.

He did so much for the University. I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Stegar several times. He was an outstanding Hokie, and a a great person.

Absolutely. I got to meet Steger as a student and then later as a campus minister and all my interactions with him backed up this take.

Mad respect for the man. Outside of the growth and success that VT had over the course of 15 years, he did a great job of leading us through the events and aftermath of a completely unfathomable situation 11 years ago. It still bothers me to this day that, at least in my opinion, he was unfairly railroaded through the media in the weeks and months afterwards as everyone was trying to find someone to blame for what happened.

I agree with you completely. But if we are being honest, it didn't matter who it was or what they did. They were going to get steamrolled by the media.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

I spoke to him shortly after 4/16 at a fundraising event. His words were strong but you could see the stress and pain in his eyes. He was the true embodiment of Ut Prosim
