Corey Moore added to CFB Hall of Fame ballot for 2019

Our very own keeper of the Terror Dome and one of the most feared defensive ends in college football has been put on the hall of fame ballot for the first time.

If voted in, he will be the fifth Hokie to be inducted.

Moore, who won both the Bronko Nagurski Award as national defensive player of the year and the Lombardi Award as best lineman in college football during Virginia Tech's 1999 national championship game season, aims to be just the fifth Hokies player inducted to the hall, joining halfback Hunter Carpenter (1900-05), end Carroll Dale (1956-59), safety Frank Loria (1965-67) and defensive end Bruce Smith (1981-84).

"One of the stupid reporters asked me a question that he had already asked me the day before and the day before," Moore said, "and the question was, 'Did I think we deserved to be there playing for the national championship?' I blew, and I probably shouldn't have.

"I could have handled it in a different way and just said, 'No comment,' and just got up and walked away, but the past couple weeks for me--which is no excuse for my behavior, and I apologize for that--the past couple weeks for me have been stressful, go, go, go, this interview, that interview, camera in your face. And when somebody asks you a stupid question like that, you're going to get upset. And I got upset.

"Like I said, I could have handled it in a different way, but that's the way I chose to handle it and I think it sent a message."

Moore, who was on a podium at midfield, walked off the podium after the incident and said he asked a member of the Virginia Tech sports information staff to keep the reporter away from him. Moore then returned.

Can anyone give me insight to why he failed in the NFL. Did the Bills try to make him a full blown DE? Should he have been an LB in 3-4 scheme, or a situational pass rusher?

My opinion is that, at the time, the NFL wasn't ready for a player in the mold of the way Bud used Corey. It wasn't until a few years later that you started to see smaller speed rush guys like Freeney, Dumervil, James Harrison have success. Corey was still a bit smaller than those guys, but if Buffalo wanted to use him as a DE, he could have bulked up a bit and been effective. Instead, they moved him to OLB...just like how the Ravens did Cornell Brown a few years earlier...and I don't think what they wanted fit his skillset. He started a few games his rookie year and maybe he could have adjusted, but then he got shot in the offseason and that was that.

He was never really projected to be a star in the NFL because he was a tweener. I believe he played at about 215 at VT, and that was never going to project to DE in the NFL.

He was absolutely AWESOME in college, and he totally abused slower, less-athletic players. But he had a mediocre National Championship game against NFL-level players on Florida State, which probably hurt his draft stock a bit.

Whatever happened in the NFL, I've never seen a better defensive player at Virginia Tech.
