OFF SEASON POLL 2: Michael Vick

NFL Hall of Fame worthy?
NCAA Hall of Fame worthy?

1. Elephant is in the room. No hiding it. Recovery or no, its there.
2. No major titles or awards (ESPY excluded)
3. Completely changed the game of football, college and NFL.

(Totally biased opinion: When he was on the field, you HAD to watch. I remember using my very first Wachovia credit card to buy a preseason Falcons PPV game. I was in the Bahamas (on my father-in-law's dime). I was young and stupid. Totally worth it.)

What says Hokie Nation?

NCAA Y/N?
NFL Y/N?

NFL: biased Y
NCAA: unbiased Y

Has been argued exhaustively already when tech inducted him.
What he did on the field speaks for itself.
What he's done since the issues is an attempt to atone for his wrongs. People screw up. Many don't bother trying to do better afterward. Vick has, and I applaud him for that.

Best collegiate QB ever. But no to both.

"Best collegiate QB ever"
Then why no NCAA vote?

Requirement 3 -
While each nominee's football achievements in college are of prime consideration, his post football record as a citizen is also weighed. He must have proven himself worthy as a citizen, carrying the ideals of football forward into his relations with his community and fellow man. Consideration may also be given for academic honors and whether or not the candidate earned a college degree.

I love Mike, but he'll never get any consideration for the NCAA Hall of Fame.

So how do we weigh his post football record as a citizen?

Ask the National Football Foundation. Its most recent ballot had 76 players on it and Mike wasn't one of them. If he can't even get on the ballot, he's going to have a hard time getting in.

Their (the National Football Foundation) selection process is not without criticism:

"The eligibility criteria have changed over time, and have occasionally led to criticism. Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com has said,

The NFF election process is arcane and confusing. Based on current rules, Notre Dame's Joe Montana will never be in the College Football Hall of Fame. He was never an All-American on a team recognized by the NCAA. If that sounds outrageous, consider that at one time hall of famers had to actually graduate. (emphasis in original)[17]"

Also, he just officially retired this year, so he wouldn't even be eligible to be on the ballot until next year.

I don't think that's the case. Carson Palmer retired 5 months ago and he's on the ballot for 2019. Mike officially retired a year ago and he's not.

What about OJ?

He was more then likely in before 1994.

This frustrates me. IMO, Michael Vick should be the poster-boy for rehabilitated athletes. He made some terrible decisions, but turned his life around and did everything he could to pay his debt to society. We never ignore, condone, or make light of his transgressions, but we also shouldn't forget what he's done since.

his post football record as a citizen is also weighed. He must have proven himself worthy as a citizen, carrying the ideals of football forward into his relations with his community and fellow man.

Since reentering the free world, MV7 has exemplified this.

Note: His dogfighting days were not post-football.

NCAA - yes
Nfl - no

I think NCAA could be argued either way. Only playing 2 years hurts.

He isn't even close to NFL hall of fame status in my eyes.

NCAA - Yes. MV changed the QB position as we know it, and made a splash like no other QB that I know of in NCAA D1 history.
NFL - No. He had some nice seasons, and probably would have been ballot-worthy if it wasn't for his hiatus from the league, but plenty of QBs in the NFL have done what he did and are not in the HOF.

Honestly if TO is getting in, then Mike Vick should be in.

No offense, but I don't think you're giving enough credit to TO's accomplishments. He's second all-time in career receiving yards, fifth in touchdowns (rushing and receiving), eighth in receptions, and sixth all-time in reception yards per game (excluding active players).

This.

TO was a jerk but he put up some damn numbers

this is a well looped gif

I think he should be in the NCAA Hall of Fame, but do not think his chances are too good under the current criteria. They also seem to have an anti-flashy, "players that did it the right way" mentality.

For example, from all of the dominant Miami teams, the only inductees are:

Benny Blades
Gino Toretta
Russell Maryland
Jimmy Johnson
Vinny Testeverde
That's it.

Hell Deion Sanders was eligible in 2006 but wasn't voted in until 2011. Mike Vick just retired professionally so he wouldn't even be eligible until next year. If a sure-fire Hall of Famer takes five years, then Vick will have to wait awhile.

As for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I think four Pro Bowls (back when that meant something before half the QBs in the league got in as alternates) and being the record holder for most rushing yards in a season by a QB and most rushing yards in a game by a QB, and being generally considered to have revolutionized the position are pretty good arguments for his case.

NCAA -- absolutely. while he was at VT, he was a great ambassador for VT and a model "student-athlete". he did *NOTHING* wrong. he should be judged on what happened *WHILE* he was under the NCAA's thumb.

NFL -- no. he just didn't do enough.

I agree, I think his college play warrants NCAA HOF consideration.
NFL - as much as I like to hope so, outside of rushing yards for QB, he did not do enough. After his break out year in Philly, I thought if he can string together 3 or 4 more years like that he would have a great shot.

As far as Character, I think he has done more than just about anybody to pay for his sins and to change who he was as a person and if you can't forgive Vick (Tech fan or not) you can't call yourself a Christian

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

While I tend to agree that he has paid his dues, people will always have hangups about what he did and we should, in turn, forgive them for that. I would think it a much easier thing to forgive.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

how do you know MV7 was a model "student-athlete"? I know that while Tyrod got his crap done that he was FAR from a model student (#sauces), and he actually graduated.

I also agree that while being SO good that you can get drafted after 2 years of playing means you should be considered for the NCAA HoF, it SHOULD hurt your resume. You'd be hard pressed to find many NFL HoF with only 2 years to compile a resume.

Not good enough for NFL, but should be for NCAA.

Usually Halls of Fame exist to acknowledge breadth and longevity of work, not short careers with high peaks. Unfortunately for MV7, he falls into the latter category. I'd put him in NCAA tho

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Let's be real. If MV7 got into any of these hall of fames, PETA would be picketing the event. Neither organization wants that. He deserves the NCAA, but the fact that he had a part in killing animals is something that people will never forget and will polarize the masses.

I could see MV7 getting into the NCAA Hall of Fame after he passes away because his on field play merits.

I agree he's been a poster boy for rehabilitation.

What's
Important

In my opinion, being afraid of upsetting PETA should never be the criteria for leaving him out consideration for one of those two Halls of Fame; PETA has enough dirty laundry of their own.
That being said, I admit that MV7 may not have the credentials to justify NFL Hall of Fame entry. It is only through my VT maroon and orange colored (vice rose colored) glasses where he gets in easily.
He should be a shoo-in for the NCAA Hall of Fame.
