Damn, absolutely tragic. Hate to see this kind of thing.

Wow. That's tough news.

Condolences to his family and friends.

It's that time of year, where you have to stay hydrated. I'm just taking a wild guess that's what happened. I know 2 people who have died from Heat Strokes.

Is he related to Steve McNair by any chance??

Incredibly sad, there is a good chance he had a unknown arrhythmia. The Sports Med Physicians at VT/VCOM are doing research now trying to push the NCAA to increase the standards for cardiac screening in athletes. Sudden cardiac death is the number 1 threat to athletes, just like the AAU basketball player not too long ago who died on the court.

RIP Jordan

What improvements should the NCAA look to make in terms of cardiac screenings? Also what is the current standard at now?

So VT does a full cardiac workup on every athlete every year (its part of their research and the Chief Medical Officer of VT athletics believes it will save an athlete at some point). This includes a full EKG, and a handful of other tests that I am not sure about.
I'm sure you can find the medical guidelines for the NCAA online somewhere and I don't want to pretend to know them. But its a pretty standard, but more detailed sports physical, includes blood tests for things like sickle-cell (potentially can't play at elevation - a few NFL players have this restriction -> no Mile High Stadium trips)

I think they started doing it after a Radford student (basketball player I think) died of sudden cardiac incident, that could have been prevented if he had an EKG.
The reason they feel like it is important is because if their research is correct, then it should be 100% preventable, assuming athletes follow the medical advice.

Thanks for the reply. I would imagine even a simple EKG added to the protocal would be do wonders for the standard of healthcare.

Take a knee and drink water. Get your ticker tested. Fuck, life is fragile.

RIP...prayers for his family.

6'4 325 lbs, he likely had to gain a lot of that weight. Regardless it's unhealthy and it's the coach's responsibility not to risk the health of his players. This is awful. I love football as much as the next guy but when people's lives are in danger who cares about some dumb trophy

Ironically he just hit his goal of $20k from his GoFundMe page to pay for his medical expenses (believed to be from a prior heat stroke a month ago).

Dafuq? I'm no doctor, but I would think you shouldn't be working out a month after a heat stroke

Per the letter linked in the tweet, he was hospitalized on May 29 and tragically passed away today. I don't think it was two separate occasions, and if it was then someone needs to go to jail.

Not sure where the heat stroke thing came from, if anyone has a better source on it I'd love to take a look. All of the articles I read don't disclose what caused him to be hospitalized in the first place, but he got a liver transplant. So my theory would be some form of:
Rhabdomyolysis (breaking down of muscle in a toxic sense) -> Liver failure (probably made worse by dehydration/nutritional status) -> Cardiac or other problems do to toxins in blood -> Liver transplant -> transplant reaction -> Not a good outlook from that point forward
But I'm not working with a lot of info, so that could be pretty far off.

Nothing I've read says heat stroke either, just generic "hospitalization".

I have second hand information from the Giants board I frequent:

Saying his rectal temp was 106. Heat stroke for sure. But who knows what medical conditions he had contributing to that.

Very sad and usually preventable stuff. Coaches and conditioning staff just don't get Mother Nature.

One of the guys I talked to about this (who has med training) said that he guessed heat stroke. It can be a rare complication (his words not mine) but with a liver transplant in performed, he figured it was a complication of severe heat stroke. His guess was the dude was pounding tylenol in conjunction with his work outs to maintain his body and tylenol shreds the liver.

Oh. I hope that's the case. Not that it truly makes it any better because he's still gone. It just takes the likelihood of negligence way down. I haven't looked at any sources outside of this thread. So, I have no idea what really happened. But if it was two separate occasions, you're right, someone needs to be held accountable. Being a heat casualty predisposes you to becoming one again. Especially, in a short period of time.
