ESPN dishes out the most underrated player on each top 25 team. Ill save you the click bait and let you know that Mookie was listed for us. feel free to review and discuss the rest of the list here if you feel or debate who you think is the most underrated Hokie.
15. Virginia Tech: OLB/D Mook Reynolds
He played alongside two future first-round picks in Tremaine Edmunds and Terrell Edmunds, so his accomplishments could easily be overlooked. But Reynolds has 134 tackles, including 18 for loss, in the past two seasons and has started 26 games over the past three seasons. He'll be a more recognizable player this season, as Virginia Tech really needs him to step up. -- Rittenberg

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!!!!!
The only argument to make here is that it should be Ricky Walker. Walker easily the 3rd or 4th best DT in the conference last year and was left off of the All-ACC list. Mook is definitely our #2 most underrated. Guy does a little bit of everything really well. His versatility will be much needed and much more on display this year.
Floyd and Hill are more underrated than Walker
I disagree. Floyd needs to improve his pass coverage and may not be a starter this year with Diablo back and Hunter up to speed and while Hill has improved, he was nowhere near as effective at his position as Walker has been. Given his stats and lack of awards, the fact that Walker was left off the most underrated list shows you how underrated he is.
I think you and I may just define underrated differently. I'm not saying they are better, just that they are very good at their position and never get mentioned. Ricky is still getting mentions. He is even on one of the Phil Steele covers.
If referring to my post I said he is receiving props now.
THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS A SLIGHT TO OR CRITICISM OF RICKY. But I want to see how he does when he isn't playing alongside Settle.
I would ask same in regard to settle. Would like to see how he would be without Walker. That and rick was just as good in 2016. Was PFF defensive lineman of week 2 of the 4 games he started. Also why is it that know one ask this question when it comes to 4 clemson guys playing together or the fsu guys with nnadi sweat christmas etc. Again proves that Ricky is under valued and in this case under estimated.
You just picked the two best returning starters on our defense though. The article agrees with you on Mook, but underrated implies that they aren't expected to play outstanding. We definitely expect that out of these two.
I don't think underrated means guys you don't expect to perform at an all conference level. I think it means guys that outsiders don't expect to perform at an all conference level. I think coaches in the ACC would not vote walker or mook underrated. I think that award would probably go to flyod. Sure hes not a "great" cover guy but he came up big for us a lot last year and is more effort than talent. he brings the hat and is always around the ball. sure he can get beat deep at times but its not for lack of giving his all. Maybe they left him off because of diablo. or maybe ESPN isn't interested in digging that deep.
Ricky Walker isn't underrated at all...if the 2018 Hokies are a success he'll be a big reason why.
Walker statistically best in ACC highest graded DT last year PFF only got HM. That and being the leader of the team is why he is most under rated valued.. He is getting some prop now but definitely has been under rated. Hell i remember when fans were thinking SS in the same league. Look at grades and stats wasnt even close.

While this is a perfect time for a Coleman Fox post.... I'd have to say Oscar Bradburn. Having a punter you can always count on that reminds you of Crocodile Dundee is worth so much. Think about if that 2011 team had had a decent punter. Clemson had great field position all night in the first game because of crappy punts.
Edit: If someone could photoshop Bradburn's face onto Crocodile Dundee it would be much appreciated
YES. Holy moly a good punter is the most under appreciated player on the field. Just look back at the great LSU teams a couple years back. Offense was kinda meh, but damnit with Brad Wing back there dropping absolute bombs and dimes inside the 5 everyyy damn time it just didn't matter.
We didn't lose 2011 Clemson due to lack of a punter.
Knew someone would say that. You don't lose any game for just one reason so yea you're right. And obviously we didn't lose this one just because of a lack of a punter. Just saying how much a punter can change a game. Pretty sure that was the game Demler had a punt that went maybe 5 yards and another that went 20 and you could feel (and definitely hear) the disappointment in the stands and the energy leave Lane. Plus trying to stop that offense from the 50 yard line each time after back to back to back 3 and outs grinds down a defense, which is what happened in the second half when we were only down 10-3. Shit has a domino effect but gets overlooked. Bradburn keeps you from having to worry about that.
While that may be true, wasn't this the year things were so bad that we had Danny Coale punting for us? That's shocking for a Frank Beamer coached team. I'll bet if you told Frank in 2001 that in ten years he'd have a starting WR punting by mid season because all his punters sucked, Bud would come out of nowhere and uppercut you into another dimension.
Nick Sorensen would like a word. Who thought that guy would start at QB, LB, S and punt.
This sounds more like a coaching résumé.
Love Mook, that nickel-whip position tends to get really under appreciated by the fanbase in general until we don't have someone who can play that role effectively, and then those same people are wondering what's wrong with our defense.
Think Mook is undervalued but primarily because he doesnt have a position. There are no 190lb LB i. The league. I disagree on folks considering nfl projection over CFB performance.
If Mook could return some punts for TDs would he get some Jabril Peppers hype? He could play every position in the secondary and the whip role plays up close to the line like Peppers tended to do.
Anybody know what the 'D' is meant to stand for? "Defender"? That's soccer. "Defenseman"? Hockey.
Also, Rick Walk is easily the most underrated player on our defense. Exhibit A: this guy writes about college football for a living and doesn't know.
Anybody know what the 'D' is meant to stand for?
**giggles**
Oh, grow up.
.
(Never grow up.🙃)
How many dicks did you see while googling "penis gif"?

Fuck Pat Narduzzi
It was the definition of a "high risk high reward" google search.
Assuming it is letting everyone know that he plays on Defense. Since the list is not broken down into defense and offense.
I guess.
You'd think that anyone who reads the article knows that an "OLB" plays "D".
Also, it's the only instance of the notation in the whole piece. Not a big deal, but def weird.

Ricky Walker was named a 3rd team preseason All American. I think that disqualifies him from being "underrated".
Agree he is getting props now. Nationally! cover guy for Steele too. Think the hype for Big Tim hurt his status with local media/fans though. He had played as good or better the last 2 years. If ESPN comes out withtop 25 best players and its Ricky then they are exoneratated. Lol
Mook "Fuck Yo' Shoe" Reynolds
I love how he doesn't look back, its as if he predicted he could watch that moment over and over again thanks to the TV coverage and TKP gif skillz
This GIF starts 1 second too late
I think this like all things is relative. Relative to how good Ricks been the last 2 years and being the leader last year and this year. Relative to others with similar performance and over all co ntribution to Team a case could be made for under rated valued, however he has thrived in the role since HS so dont think he minds.
This confuses me. If Mook was an All-ACC preseason selection, hot the heck is he underrated. I call BS & submit Colman Fox & Oscar Bradburn.
You can be an all acc and still be underrated. There was a great case made that he played alongside TWO first round draft picks and quietly put up huge numbers. He was a rock. It's his time to lead. He could absolutely dominate and no one outside of Blacksburg is talking about it.
I hear you. However, if he's getting some love for an All-ACC preseason pick & a number of times during televised games his photo was highlighted when the announcers were presenting the players for the defense, that would technically qualify as folks outside of 'burg talking about him. Just sayin...

This is convenient, but we should not make a habit of copying entire lists from an article like this. They deserve their clicks for their material.
I didn't copy the commentary on each. Still need to click for that.
It's still right on the line in terms of community guidelines.
funny thing is you can really tell how "underrated" these guys are. the list means nothing to me because the only one ive ever heard of is mook lol.
and my only argument on the list would be UCF and ottis Anderson. (ill admit im biased on this because I coached him in highschool) but he lit it up last year as a true fresh. IMO and is poised to have a BIG year, played slot for them after being a RB only in highschool with hardly any catches or WR experience. really came on as the season progressed at UCF.

This makes sense to me. Ricky Walker got plenty of praise last yet but was overshadowed a bit by Tim Settle. I do not think he was underrated. I can't speak to the choices for "all acc" etc. I am going on the praise he got on every televised game I watched.
Mook, on the other hand, was largely ignored last year in terms of praise. The down side of being a great DB is not getting a lot of attention. After a while QBs stop throwing in your direction and that means fewer break-ups and interceptions. That can lead to being "underrated" because there are no stats to generate hype. How do you measure, "the QB didn't throw his way"?
I would've said Reggie Floyd. I love me some Reggie Floyd.
