Hoppel was a Class of 2016 signee- a former 3-star OT from Suffolk, VA. Impacts our depth on the O-line.
The #Hokies' roster has been updated online. OL Jarrett Hopple is not on there. I'm told he plans to transfer.— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) July 11, 2018

I know ellis was promised he would start at QB (basically a gentleman's shot) before being moved. I didn't realize that for chattman though. id assume if not a WR he would be a DB?

Marcus was #5 because our QB Coach, Kevin Rogers, was the QB coach at Syracuse for McNabb who wore #5. He moved to the NFL to coach QBs for the Vikings, and they drafted a scrambler out of Mississippi State, and he also wore #5. See the pattern there?

ohhhhh well that makes sense now. marcus posted a bunch of stuff on shady on his IG which he has since taken down. he was going on and on about him in the comments. shesh. that's tough.

and remember, Goode is 6'-0" if he cheats up on his toes a little. 330 on that frame is a dang bowling ball. Settle had that much weight on a 6'-3" frame and looked huge.

The Goode news is with the new redshirt rule, he can cut some weight in camp and early in the season and still have a chance to see the field some late in the year.

The X-factor for the Hokies will be tight end play, as sophomore Dalton Keene (#29) and junior Chris Cunningham (#85) were both hella productive in 2017. Cunningham averaged an absurd-for-a-TE 19 yards per catch, and Keene was right behind him at just over 16.
I had no idea our TE's were that productive last year.

DT depth is scary and absurd for a P5 team. Spin "recruiting" however you want, we have sucked recruiting that position, and it will bite us in the ass. CB a huge concern too, but Bud won't expose those guys if he does't have to. Still no top shelf RB on the roster.

1. There are more actual WRs on the roster with great potential than there has ever been. Gone are the days of hoping an "athlete" from the 757 can catch the ball. Kudos to the staff for stocking that position with quality prospects qucikly. Future is bright there 2. The staff has also done a great job recruiting the LB position. We have some really good prospects there at both inside positions, and the competition will only make those players better. 3. Fuente/Corn have done a fantastic job stocking the QB room with legit prospects. Again, the days of having 1 ACC level QB on the team and hoping an "athlete" can learn to pass are over. Kudos to the staff here for upgrading the talent immensely. 4. OL is much like WR now... kudos to Vice and Co. for getting real OL prospects in and in good numbers. The future is bright here as well.

Spin "recruiting" however you want, we have sucked recruiting that position, and it will bite us in the ass.
Since I have your permission to spin this, you forgot the part where the position is thin because we had a blue chip recruit leave early and get drafted.

Outstanding, thank you for making my point. Are we trying to compete with FSU and Clemson? Or no? because if we are, Tim Settle going to the NFL and crashing the entire DT room makes my point better than I could have. 1 guy imploding your depth is the definition of THIN at that position. Unless of course, the goal is to win 7-8 games and hope to develop DTs that were not offered by other peer or top schools.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It is not thin (there are 7 plus two tweener DTs on scholarship.) And Dean is a walk on that may play over 3-4 of these guys.
Walker-Mihota
Burke-Hewitt
Fullwood-Taylor
Goode-Porcher/Becton
A fairer criticism would be that they have missed some evaluations and had projects not develop.
There desperately needs to be some development or attrition at the defensive tackle spot in order to accommodate the increase in DT offers which the recruitnick folks want to see.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
By definition, not all projects will "develop" this is why there needs to be more of an emphasis on recruiting. After a redshirt freshman year, most Defensive Tackles should be able to contribute to give the starters a rest...maybe not playing a huge amount of snaps, but still able to contribute....

17 WRs, with 5 newcomers and 7 entering their 2nd year on campus (Hazleton transferred in after his true freshman season at Ball State). We've been busy bringing in bodies recently, hopefully some of them pan out big.

Damn, the new roster format sucks. Excessive whitespace partly caused by the useless expanding 'additional info' tabs. Took 27 rolls of the mouse wheel to scroll all the way to the bottom.

I imagine there's a good chance that Kane redshirts, and this'll be Clay Dean's 3rd year on the team and he has yet to see the field, so I guess they assume they probably won't be conflicting too much.

I could have sworn QP was going to have another number besides #7. I thought he posted on his twitter a couple months ago that it was a different number.

Many good/interesting things on there. One that stood out was Chatman being listed at WR. I was hoping one of Chatman and Ellis would play offense. If Ellis doesn't stay at QB, he could be a candidate for DB.
Also Goode at 330. Definitely will need to cut some weight, but a freshman coming in with that size is uncommon. Would rather it be this way than him being too light and needing a year to bulk up. If he is in good shape and can cut 15-20 and play fast around/slightly above 300, hopefully he can add immediate depth on DL this year.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I would expect Chatman and Ellis to be looked at as WR and CB before they make a final decision unless they already have and they are just going through the motions now as far as looking at Ellis as a QB.

Perhaps he was buried on the depth chart and would not have gotten any playing time.
He was.
Wow Sean Savoy is up to 199 lbs? Solid. What did he weigh last year?
He was listed as 188 lbs last year.
So next year he'll be 11010?
I doubt that he'll lose 10101101 lbs in a year.
This comment is criminally underrated.
Of course a comment like this would come from someone with an XKCD panel as their avatar.

That there are 10 types of people.
Those who understand binary, and those who don't?
You give me a nice segue into my other favorite way to break down a population:
1. Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data.
That's one of my favorites, too.
He'll lose it all in camp though. Specialty players always try to bulk in the summer and just end up losing 10 lbs in camp.
has him at 192 now
Probably went to taco bell for dinner last night.
so does that mean he lost weight from spending all night on the john or he gained weight from eating a taco 12 pack?
Hahaha
I'm suggesting that he lost 7 lbs from the taco bell squirts. Thanks for clarifying :)
Yes, but your order is wrong.
I'm excited to see what Farley and Hazelton bring to the table, heard about their talent but haven't been able to see it translate to the field.
Looks good to see all of our DE's 240lb and above. Wish House would put on a few more pounds but obviously more worried about our DT's.
Our WR's are BIG this year with Kumah, Hazelton, and Kaleb Smith over 205 lbs and even Savoy is right at 200 lbs, hopefully he stays fast.
Ironic a guy named "House" needs to add weight.
Small houses are all the rage these days.
Quincy Patterson II got 2" shorter! Everybody panic!!!!
must have been standing next to bucky when they measured him. thatll make you lose a few inches.
On the contrary, if Bucky was 7'9", then QP should at least be 6'11", no?
probably right. just makes you look like you lost a few inches lol.
6 foot 12, probably.
Looks like they changed his height/weight since you posted this. Now listed at 6'4" - 231 lbs.
grew 2 inches just from me mentioning bucky
Maybe he was just happy to see you.

I feel like I accomplished something! I hope everyone here appreciates my hard work!
Interesting to see Ellis listed as QB and Armani Chatman at WR
what was chatman recruited as? his 247 list him as a wr. maybe youre confusing him with chamarri conner?
and we all knew ellis would get his shot a QB. I don't think he will be listed as a QB going into the season though.
I thought both were recruited as ATH
I know ellis was promised he would start at QB (basically a gentleman's shot) before being moved. I didn't realize that for chattman though. id assume if not a WR he would be a DB?
Travon McMillian was given the same shot...for one day and then moved to RB.
I had thought Chatman for sure was going to be a DB.
Carliss Parker, too, for that matter. Hopefully Ellis' career turns out better than both of theirs and finishes his playing career in Blacksburg.
There's a Logan Thomas quip there somewhere...
Terrius Wheatly still at Running back..seeing a decent amount of Running backs
No Samuel Denmark?
Good number of receivers overall, any word on whether Hazleton recovered from his injury?
Despite the attrition, I have faith in BUD and I think the defense will do well overall.
If Terrius is anything like his father as an RB, he should be pretty good!
What was Hazeltons injury that kept him out this spring?
We should know now from Mook's situation that the first rule is you do not talk about injuries.
The second rule is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT INJURIES!
The first rule of Fuente Club.
Denmark is focusing on track only now. Anyone know if his scholarship still counts against the football limit now?
Pretty sure there was an announcement a month or two ago that he was back with the team
Wow that's a young team. I thought #7 was a retired number. Also good to see Holston put on some more weight.
marcus davis wasn't that good.
Bucky was pretty good though
#7 usually gets put on the best athlete on the team. #4 usually goes on the fastest person on the team.
Was DW the fastest player on that team?
No but Tim was last year.
I mean he has worn the #7 andddd the #4 must mean something.

Now I understand why Glennon had #7
Vick's jersey was retired, but the #7 wasn't.
Learn something new every day.
So it's just symbolic and doesn't really affect anything?
When Sean Glennon wore it a few years after MV7 had it retired, and MV5 was kicked off the team, well you have your answer.
No, it means that no other person with the last name Vick can be #7.
But... Michael Vick Jr. will be college-aged in 2036 or so...
I hear his real name is Ron Mexico Jr
Is that why Marcus was #5?
Marcus was #5 because our QB Coach, Kevin Rogers, was the QB coach at Syracuse for McNabb who wore #5. He moved to the NFL to coach QBs for the Vikings, and they drafted a scrambler out of Mississippi State, and he also wore #5. See the pattern there?
5 was the largest number Marcus knew at the time. Word on the street is he's almost ready to start learning the double-digits.
Gee and here I thought the word on the street is the McCoy gave Marcus's baby momma herpes...
ohhhhh well that makes sense now. marcus posted a bunch of stuff on shady on his IG which he has since taken down. he was going on and on about him in the comments. shesh. that's tough.
I don't think that's accurate. It appears he knew up to fifteen when he was at Tech.
https://pilotonline.com/sports/college/article_605a7282-f40b-5fc0-8b1d-b07756019663.html
Eh, to me it just sounds like he couldn't count to 18:
- Marcus, maybe
So that's why the sentence was 5-to-life. Marcus wouldn't know how long he'd been in there once those first five years passed.
Im digging our WR depth for the next few years.
Depth AND quality.
Only one single digit Defensive Lineman? I don't like it redo the whole thing.
Goode is 331. That's a lot of beef. If he can play fast at that weight, fantastic. If not, I hope he gets down to the 315-320 range.
Starting to think he's a redshirt candidate, i'd be shocked if he could play at that size. Then again, probably more thrilled than shocked.
and remember, Goode is 6'-0" if he cheats up on his toes a little. 330 on that frame is a dang bowling ball. Settle had that much weight on a 6'-3" frame and looked huge.
He will need to cut some weight.
The Goode news is with the new redshirt rule, he can cut some weight in camp and early in the season and still have a chance to see the field some late in the year.
Glad we have Cody Grimm and Jack Tyler on the roster, otherwise we would be pretty inexperienced at LB.
Dax Hollifield is 18 year old Harry Dunne.
Thomas Guerry = Lloyd
Cole Beck is the Stiffmeister!
Looks kinda like Brewer
Maybe it's just me, but...
Dalton Keene with the 'stache.
I hope he scores a bunch of touchdowns because I dig his style.
Touchdowns aside, he's clearly a man that scores often.
Take off his hair and you have Pedro from Nepolean Dynomite
Hello, Ladies
WTF, it looks like he's wearing diapers.
And of course, with that observation, it looks like he's saying, "Yeah, bitches, I'm peeing my pants, and you don't even know it!"
Buried deep inside that UNC piece was this gem
I had no idea our TE's were that productive last year.
I mean they only had 19 combined catches but I guess the point still stands
Is he auditioning for a porno later?
This guy fucks.

I immediately thought: "D'Artagnan of the Three Musketeers" fame.

A bunch of walk-in WRs
With having to practice against the no huddle, spread offenses you have to have a ton of scout team receivers to rotate in.
I love that we are a young team, lots of possibilities
7-8 scholarship seniors
13 scholarship juniors
20-23 scholarship sophomores
14-15 scholarship r-Freshmen
24-25 scholarship true Freshmen

ooh found the roster format drop down list... Grid View is much better
Two observations:
Chase Moo-Maw (I can't spell, so I'm spelling it how it sounds) looks like he's 40 and
Did anyone else notice that we have two number 56 O-linemen? Are we doing that to confuse opponents?
Ok, a third observation, we also have a tight end with the same number as Bradburn, another fake in the making??
I imagine there's a good chance that Kane redshirts, and this'll be Clay Dean's 3rd year on the team and he has yet to see the field, so I guess they assume they probably won't be conflicting too much.
I figured something like that was the case, I was just trying to make a funny.

Hazelton is a big bodied WR.
Yes. He is.
Vinny Mihota up to 298...He's been hitting the all you can eat buffet.
Quincy Patterson is most definitely the love child of Mike Tomlin and Omar Epps.
Wait.....
I thought Tomlin = Epps
Everything I know is wrong
Top comment in this reddit AMA with Omar Epps https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/924vvj/hi_im_omar_epps_author_of_...
Quincy has a Fernando Rodney haircut.
And his name is Quincy just like Omar Epps as DJ Q in Juice. It's perfect. I sense a signature touchdown celebration.
*Scans roster.
Phew, no one named Bishop on the team.
maybe it is the facial hair... but I could see Jeremy going all biblical and shit.
.

... as long as he strikes with great vengeance and furious anger!
That group of TE's though...
You talking about Hooker or QP?
Colt Petit?
Graduated and peaced out with 1 year left of eligibility.

dalton keene and drake Duluiis are going to be 'dynamic' this year.

Reminds me of this quote from Moneyball:
Play the Children's Game until they tell you it's over.
I didn't realize that we had Cody Grimm and Jack Tyler (GA) on staff as well. When did that happen?
Grimm has been around for a few seasons. He came in towards the end of Beamer's tenure. Jack Tyler is news to me though.
Jack has been around the team since 2015 I think. It's been a few years. I know he was definitely around in 2016.
