Herbie heaping praise on Beamer and Hokie Nation

So, Herbstreit has lived in Nashville the past 8 years. On local sports radio today, Herbie was being interviewed and they asked him to share about his favorite campuses to visit with GameDay over his past 23 years. He went on and on about how the show really took off in 1998 when they visited Blacksburg for a VT game with VIck and crew.

I think we've all heard the story and appreciation before from Fowler and team, but it was really cool to hear Herbie raving about how Coach Beamer and Hokie Nation were the first to really embrace GameDay and see it as a 48 hour promo opportunity for the school and program. It was a game changer for GameDay, he said.

Let me just tell you, I don't think I've ever been prouder than I was to hear this story recanted today on local Nashville (read: SEC country) radio. It was awesome!!

Thats awesome, Thank you for sharing. I used to live in SEC country and it seems like VT is always respected by the SEC fans. That being said, I am STILL salty about that 2006 Peach Bowl Georgia game where Glennon threw 4 INT in the 2nd half and we blew our 21-3 lead. Ohh and the 5 fumble Tenn game.

Pour some Beer on it

I was there for that 2nd half debacle. I was living the high-life at halftime. Sigh...

I was there too. Even though it was 21-3, I was not living high at halftime. My hope was VT would just hold on long enough for time to run out.

I remember bonging beers with friends at halftime through those megaphones they passed out at the game. Then it went all down hill. Drowned my postgame sorrows at Makos in Buckhead the rest of the night... That bar was fun. I ended up dating the girl who sat behind me at the game for several years after, so I guess it wasn't all bad.

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

With some of the SEC fans I regularly talk to, they always have nothing but respect for our program and Beamer. One of my Bama coworkers always said he'd prefer to have VT in the SEC than some other teams.

Let's Go

HOKIES

Virginia Tech absolutely makes more sense in the SEC than Missouri

it seems like VT is always respected by the SEC fans.

What parallel universe do you live in?

Besides the idiots from Tennessee, I'd agree. UGA, USCe, Ole Miss, Miss State and especially Bama fans have all told me they like VT when I've been socializing with them.

In fact, Bama's radio color commentator Phil Savage has given me high praise for VT.

I would have to concur with this. I lived in Knoxville for about a year and there was definitely no love lost there. But, of the many friends I have that grew up in SEC country cheering for SEC teams and other fans I have met there has been lots of praise. One of my Georgia friends has been dying to make it to a night game in Lane. I think he may finally make it this year.

If you play it, they will win.

I've been to exactly 3 games against SEC competition: 2002 LSU, 2013 Bama, and 2016 Tennessee. I didn't really interact with any LSU fans, though the one noticeable drunk LSU fan near us in the stadium got kicked out. Pretty much every Bama fan I interacted with before, during, and after the game was pleasant. They were obviously confident that their team would win (and rightfully so), but there wasn't really any trash talk at all, and the few that I spoke to after the game were gracious and complimentary, despite the fact that we didn't play well at all.

On the other hand, the Battle at Bristol was a shitshow all around, and the Tennessee fan behavior was not helping matters at all.

Where were you sitting? Man they were obnoxious around me and my wife.
One drunk knucklehead bama fan behind me kept saying :"What's a Hokie?" right in my ear.
I finally had enough of him and told him it was the key to his momma's room. We almost had a fight.

Supposedly that one comes from Bud at a camp for kids. I remember hearing about it on EDSBS 7-8 years ago.

I lived in GA and can echo the thoughts posted. Fans of SEC schools seem to respect VT.

UT fans though? lol

And I wish we hadnt been 5-5 going into that game with 3 one possession losses.

I remember going to all of those Gamedays, good times!

I hung outside the gate to Lane the night before that gameday before the Syracuse game.

What a whoopin' that game was, too!

I certainly hope Herbstreit didn't recant this story on radio.

Hey, I used the wrong word. Clearly, my entire post is now meaningless and void. ;-)

You mean it wasn't even canted the first time?

This is going to be great for the ACC.
