Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Maria Taylor will be on call for VT @ FSU. I always enjoy having the "first team" calling our games. Thoughts? Will coverage be fair? Do you have a favorite commentator team? What are your opinions on the Oxford comma?
The rest of the opening weekend was also announced:
Here we go: ESPN announces game assignments for CFB Week 1- @KirkHerbstreit & @MariaTaylor7 on 3 Prime-Time Games; @cbfowler Joins for 2 Games while also Calling US Open- McDonough, @Todd_Blackledge & @sportsiren on ABC's Sunday Night SpecialMore: https://t.co/7WjDZBjZxm pic.twitter.com/INzI1SPsyGβ ESPN PR (@ESPNPR) August 14, 2018

I freaking hate Rob Fowler. Now is brother Chris, that guy is pretty talented.
Edit: Damn! Now my weak attempt at a joke doesn't make sense.
Rob Fowler was the weather man down in Charleston when I lived there (or was it Virginia Beach?). Every time I think "Fowler" my brain jumps to "Rob".
Yup, Charleston. When I first moved here they were running a sweepstakes where you could win a vacation with like 20 other winners and...... him. Sure, a free vacation is great, but is going with the weather guy really supposed to motivate anyone to enter? I've seen some weather ladies that I would definitely have gone on vacation with in my single days, but a mid-fifties weatherman? Not really sure what they were going for there...
His nephew Rickie is a hell of a golfer, though
Been a while since Herbie was on the call for a big Tech win. Its about time for that to change.
That said, with Herbie on the MNF call, I would expect our matchup to get a decent amount of hype on Saturday's Gameday broadcast.
I think the prime time Saturday game would get the best treatment, but definitely a full weekend's worth of discussion. Several good storylines as well. He is calling 3 prime time games though.
I dunno. ABC's primetime game is Alabama vs. Louisville, which doesn't even look all that great on paper in the post-Lamar Jackson era. It looks like everyone ceded Saturday night to Michigan at Notre Dame on NBC. Probably a big reason why LSU/Miami got selected for Sunday night.
I love having Fowler and Herbstreit on our games, they actually have great voices for listening to at a bar on the overhead speakers. I feel like they play to the emotion of the moment and stadium really well in their commentary.
You put that well and I agree. I always feel like with those guys calling the game, if we deserve the accolades, we'll get them, but if not, they're not going to disparage us unfairly either.
That's all fine and good, but Herbstreit is the KOD for national TV Hokie losses.
McDonough and Blackledge would've been better. McDonough did "Danny Coale, all the way...!!!, 2014 Ohio State, and West Virginia to name a few.
Herbstreit on the other hand - Alabama both times, Tennessee, Ohio State 2015, Clemson ACCCG, Clemson 2017, Stanford 2010, Boise State 2010, LSU 2007
Not feeling good about this.
So you're saying this is like playing in a pro stadi....um...nevermind.
While I did love McDonough when he was paired with Matt Millen a few years back, and they did quite a few Tech games, he didn't actually call those last two. 2014 OSU was Brad Nessler with Blackledge. 2017 WVU was Steve Levy (with Brian Griese, I think).
I've given up on believing it's any sort of Herbstreit curse, and more of just us shitting the bed in those type games. (BTW, the Stanford game was called by Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden.)
Chris and Herbie are two of my favorite analysts. Always a great call and neither of those two are ever really biased.
Now all we need is for Ricky Walker to shove that spear up Chief Prancy Pant's butt.
Man was really hoping for Tubberville /s
So he can harp on us to "JUST RUN THE DAMN BALL" even when we scored on a passing TD.
haha man. funny story. I OCd for our JV team last year and we had a new head coach. we threw the ball all over the field and the strength of our team was our WRs and QB but on every completion he would come over and get in my ear about running the ball. we had a good mix of run and pass and when we would watch film the day after the games it was about 60/40 run to pass. but everyyyyyy week come game day there he was right in my ear on every incompletion. never failed. He asked me to come down and OC for him again this year. I said ill pass.
I was hoping for Mack Brown.
"This guy is rilly good."
Every single sentence that comes out of his mouth seems to have a "rilly good" in it.
The first time I heard Tuberville's voice on TV, I thought he was Larry Culpepper and I was in the middle of some weird Dr. Pepper fueled nightmare. After listening to Tommy for a series, I am confident that Culpepper would've been a better announcer.
Larry Culpepper, sideline reporter.

I will forever love Fowler for this. I witnessed it live and it was heartfelt. It was during the 1st game back after 4/16.
Fowler is a HOKIE forever
I was there for that live too. Great moment. I am thrilled with the due of Herbie and Fowler calling the game.
Had not seen. Awesome! No GIF needed!
No Beth Mowins? I'm upset! /s
Love Kirk and Chris, no complaints here
Oxford commas are a must. You think grammar is a motherfucking game?
You, think grammar is a motherfucking game?
You think grammar is a motherfucking, Game?
You think, grammar is a motherfucking game?
the funny thing is that neither of the responses above feature the Oxford comma.
These guys are some of the best in the business but if im going for best or favorite commentator Ian Darke aint half bad for the other sports.
Maria Taylor is very qualified
yeah she is...
I saw her at gameday last year and she is a very sexy woman. Legs for days.
HOW DARE YOU OBJECTIFY A WOMAN LIKE THIS!!! She is incredibly qualified for her job and you just reduce her to a pair of legs.
You're right. I've been very rude.
I would definitely allow her to punish me.
Who gives a fuck about an oxford comma?
I've seen those English dramas too.
They're cruel.
Fowler is my favorite announcer. I love him for tennis.
Was hoping for Pam Oliver....../s
I am for the Oxford comma but against the tired discussion surrounding it.
We're playing F$U so, no.
Dunno, I just saw a college football commercial on ESPN the other day hyping up the season with a VT image/reference in there. Seems we may be getting a bit more national respect back than we realize.
Toughest two weeks of the year have begun.
Always been a good team, I think they have about 15 or 20 more years calling games well before they reach Lundquist/Danielson levels of dear god why are you still doing this.
I like Maria Taylor, her side pieces are entertaining and relevant to the game rather than the usual cutesy kitsch. I also enjoy that she is like 6'6" in heels and is not afraid to tower over coaches for the halftime interview. #getJimboastool
I really like this photo.
Diggin Coach Fuente's socks.
I also like that she is not afraid to wear a lot of black, shows little edge/attitude. Good for her.
