Interesting take. I was at that Sugar Bowl and we did not dominate Texas. Great win, one of my favorite ever, but dominate? We were down at the half and had some great defensive play in the second half.

I think we dominated probably more from a defensive perspective, we held Texas to the fewest points all season, as well as the fewest yards all season, against an offense that had Ricky Williams and Shon Mitchell. Defense 3 INT's and a fumble scoop and score and 5 sacks. This was the eye opening of 'Hey, check out that Virginia Tech team' and it could be considered the start of the Lunch Pail Defense. Bud was promoted to DC before the 1996 season.
End to end, the 99 Syracuse game is arguably the most dominating.

I know what you mean. The most memorable plays for me were that scoop and score and a Bryan Still catch on a long pass right at us in the end zone. I'll admit I felt confidence even down at the half, but I guess I just didn't feel like we were so dominant as to put it in the top of that category.
And I agree the 99 'Cuse game is the winner. Those guys were ready for the bus after the first quarter.

It was a memorable moment for VT fans. I enjoyed it more than the NC Sugar Bowl, and not just because of the outcomes. '95 is when we announced to the college football scene that we were to be reckoned with. Made even more poignant by starting the season 0-2.

Agree with biggest football win is beating tOSU @ the Shoe-I was there and stunned doesn't do justice to the crowd reaction.(Plus being the ONLY team to beat the eventual national champions that year.
(But the 1999 Syracuse game Which I was ALSO at was an ultimate beatdown over a ranked opponent with GameDay present for the first time in Blacksburg and drawing 20,000 fans in the morning with an 8PM night kickoff.)
Basketball -BEST win? To me was the 76-72 thriller over Memphis State in 1985-86 season. #1 UNC had just lost to UVA, and we faced #2 Memphis State who were poised to take over the #1 ranking. Crowd was so loud that you could not even hear the pep band playing. The headline in the papers the next day was "Welcome to Virginia-check your undefeated records at the border!" (Side note-this game was also the one and ONLY time I have ever personally seen a team coming out of a timeout so slowly that the ref placed the ball on the endline and started his 5 count and Memphis lost possession because of it!
Not as big a statement but still the most EXCITING basketball game I have been to in person was the 1988 Southern Miss-VT game at Cassell. Down 62-48 at halftime, I distinctly remembererd turning to my friend who was dejected and saying 'we can come back from this.'. History proved me right as we came back tio a tie at 110 at the end of regulation; 121 all after first overtime and won 141-132 in double OT! Both teams were raining (guarded!) three pointers from as far back as the logos(25-30 feet). Bimbo Coles had 51 points but was NOT player of the game because 15 of those came in overtime and the announcers had picked Wally Lancaster as POG just before end of regulation as he had 39 points. (Also unbelievably I saw a couple people LEAVE the Cassel after the first OT ! ) At the time, I believe this was the highest scoring NCAA division 1 game. For what it's worth, we re-watched this game last night and I was reminded that it was my first Thursday night game in Lane. We dominated UMD at every turn. It was fantastic. I'm hoping for similar results this season on 10/25.

For dominant is say we had to whip them in every face of a game. For that reason if say 1999 Syracuse, as we just absolutely crushed them in a game everyone picked to be close, hence why Gameday was in town. 2003 Miami was a defensive beating, but our offense kinda sputtered that night.

Tinch is arguably the greatest athlete in Virginia Tech history. Her career numbers and accomplishments were astounding and she led Tech to its only College World Series in program history.
She is the only softball player at Tech to have her jersey retired, and she is the only non-football student-athlete at Tech to have her jersey retired in the last 20 years.

To make it even MORE satisfying for her, she told me the reason she was cut is because the coach told her she "didn't have enough international experience." And then she pitched a no-hitter against the best international team. She was pissed.

The Cuse game...we simply boatraced them in EVERY aspect of the game.
We had Cuse fans in front of us that bought VT sweatshirts at halftime...that's how bad it was.
There have been other big wins. Jumped out early, or scored in bunches. But the 62-0 against a ranked team with Gameday onsite was just plain silly.

My wife and some friends watched the game at London Underground with a couple of 'Cuse fans who couldn't find tickets to the game after traveling from NY. By halftime, they'd given up, admitted defeat, then proceeded to buy all the drinks until the game was over. I could be mixing this up with another game, but I think that's the time the goalposts came trucking down Main St. and the bars emptied to cheer as they went by.
I was at the game, and while 'Cuse folded early, we were on tenterhooks the entire tailgate and really worried about things until it became so abundantly clear how it would end. That made it all the sweeter as it unfolded.

Small side note-most satisfying goal post tear-down was AT Lane Stadium North 1983. UVA had torn down their goalposts after beating UNC the previous week. Then the Hokies came to town and blew the doors off of them 48-0 (averaging about 9 yards per carry -wish we had THAT nowadays!!). At the end of the game, Hokie fans rushed the field from the lawn area and tore the goalpost down and took it out of the stadium. (additional reason to hate on UNC-they went to the Peach Bowl that year with an 8-3 record and 9-2 Hokies were snubbed completely -back in the days when there were only 16 bowl games! (Life as a football independent!) On the bright side they got WAXED 28-3 by FSU in the Peach Bowl) For a great article on VT success at Lane-North see https://www.newsadvance.com/go_dan_river/sports/scott-stadium-the-site-o...
Additional fun fact-after George Welsh's team in 1984 won 26-23, their fans tried to return the favor but were stopped by the Corp of Cadets in a melee in the North End Zone side of the field. Hundreds (perhaps over a thousand) folks in a donnybrook and the ground crew made the mistake of turning on the sprinklers to drive the crowd off the field. Instead it became a mud-wrestling battle! I also remember also the other end of the field being EMPTY of folks due to the sheriff or state trooper standing at the 40 yard line with his hand inches away from his holstered pistol! No one came within 15 yards of him! Good times in the years when the Hokies were not quite so great on the field allt he time!

And yet so true. Then again, it could be argued you personally permanently wrecked Hokie Hotline, as that was the catalyst for never taking live calls again.

It was a very unpopular opinion at the time, but JiA was 100% correct. The 10 win seasons were a smokescreen for the critical issues that had developed over time. The offense had turned to crap, it was only a matter of time before it really started to kill us, and whaddya know, it happened. Had these concerns not been brushed aside back in 2008, things might have been different, but.....
At least we have Fuente now.

Yeah, Tyrod's improvising was pretty good at covering up a bad offensive gameplan and playcalling on a weekly basis. I forget, how did things go after he left?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Well considering Tyrod only played in 2010 and then it was Logan in 2011, I guess things went pretty well after the year Tyrod left. And to have 2 different running backs break the single season rushing record in a 3 year span on top of having 2 record breaking receivers at the same time isn't ideal either for you either.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
And then how did it go? Where was the depth that should have been cultivated in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011? Really kept us going strong there right up to Frank's retirement, huh? As we all saw with Stiney and Frank embracing after that final game in 2015.

See now you're talking about a completely different thing. That's recruiting, not game planning. You won't hear me say anything about recruiting during that timeline. I'm just pointing out the facts that the 4 years following that interview, were successful years. As its been pointed out, if our defense had been on the same level as or offense in 2010, who knows what could have happened. But from 2008 to 2012, Darren Evans, Ryan Williams, and David Wilson broke the rushing record and we all know what Tyrod was able to do and what Logan did in 2011. Thank God the move to Loeffler didn't happen earlier or else we probably aren't looking at the same results those seasons. The fans that get pissed about 10 win seasons and ACC championships crack me up.

The fans that get pissed about 10 win seasons and ACC championships crack me up.
The ACC was a bad conference at the time. None of the traditional powers had their act together, and if they had, there's really no shot we would have competed. The ones who were frustrated in Hokie Nation were the ones who realized this and said "hey, we need to get better, because once they turn things around, we'll fall behind fast". And look at what happened the second that FSU and Clemson turned it around.
As for those great seasons, yeah, we won a bunch of games, but pretty much every time we went up against a team with legitimate national aspirations, we got pants'd. The best team we played in 2008 was Cinci, and while we won that game, we tried hard not to. 2009 through 2011 saw us drop games against Bama, Boise, and Clemson twice (kicking off their dynasty) with a main culprit the inability of our offense to do anything. And I don't think we need to talk about how horrid we looked against Stanford in Tyrod's last game.
So yeah, we won a lot against a bad conference, but you're really stretching if you don't think we had serious fundamental issues lurking with our offense during that time. I dare say if the current versions of Clemson, FSU, and Miami were around, during that time, we don't sniff a conference title.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
A. Lets not act like Miami and FSU are somehow head and heels above us right now. Miami got us last year(with a hurt QB) and we got them the year before. FSU went 6-6 last year and has a new head coach. Clemson is the only team in their own class right now. The ACC isn't the juggernaut you think it is for some reason.
B. 2008 was Beamer's greatest coaching job. Probably the youngest team he's ever had and he gets an ACC championship and a BCS win. Don't care who it was against. That's normally a huge drop year for any other school not named Bama or Ohio State.
C. Look at the schools that have made the playoffs every year. Not a lot of change. So yes, until we start to spend the same amount of money and can recruit like the perennial playoff schools, pencil me in for the guy that will enjoy 10 win seasons and ACC championships again.

I would opine that burning Tyrod's red shirt was a pivotal moment for the 2011-2013 years. In 2011, Tyrod would have had David Wilson, Srs Boykin and Coale, and Logan Thomas playing TE. I have to think LT would've stuck at tight end in 2012, and that the coaches maybe would have recruited a QB, maybe a transfer a la Brewer for 2012 or 2013.
Redshirt Sr Tyrod in 2011 would've been very special.

I never enjoyed a game more than the 48-0 butt kick. I can still remember being in the stands with the biggest smile on my face, high fiveing my fraternity brothers. And Bruce was playing.

I was at that 48-0 game in 83. One of the most satisfying moments in life. I distinctly remember one loluva fan yelling at me when we were up by about 30, "I don't even know what an effing Hokie is anyway" In one of my finer moments, I shot back, "well I don't know what a wahoo is either, but it can't play defense." It's the little things. We did the Hokie Pokie on the 50 yard line after the game. They love that there.

Deserves mention for sure. A win that came in the middle of a multi year UVA win streak. UVA came into Blacksburg ranked...we were not. My sophomore year at Tech. We stormed the field and brought down the goal posts after the game.
Hundreds of bourbon filled freezer bags were consumed in the stands that glorious day.

99 vs Syracuse and to a lesser extent 1995 and 1997 vs them as well
03 vs Miami
2002 vs LSU (maybe not on the scoreboard but they were never in it)
2005 @ LOLUVA
2005 @ WVU (dominant when you consider the caliber of the losing team)
2004 vs Maryland
Since Fu took over:
I took a lot of satisfaction from 2016 ECU. And of course the asswhoopings of LOLUNC.
edited to add: on New Years Eve 2016 Buzzketball thrashed a Duke team with Jayson Tatum on it. Granted that was before Tatum really hit his stride on the court, and Grayson Allen was suspended but still.

Since Fuente took over, we trashed ECU in both 2016 and 2017, trashed Carolina in 2016 and 2017, trashed BC in 2016, and embarrassed UVa in 2016. Each of those games were complete laughers by the time they were over, and most were out of contention by halftime.
I hope we get back to that this year. Just thoroughly humiliate the teams we should be beating.

I'll throw '93 against Pitt in the mix. We won 63-21 and Want to say it was at least 49-0 before Pitt scored. And I think all 21 of Pitts points were in the last 10 minutes or so...

The game at Clemson in '07 still might be one of my all time favorites. Pick 6, Punt return TD, and a Kick Return TD all in the first half. Plus our defensive literally abused them all game. I almost felt bad for Clemson.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I enjoyed that game, but not near as much as the 06 version. Clemson had a primtime game the Saturday before (if memory serves me correctly) and Spiller and Davis both went tf off. During the game the announcers were really pumping up the "Thunder and Lightening" hype train. I think we remember what hapoened the next Thursday night. I was grunting with each tackle and mumbling "thunder lightening my ass pshhh" the whole game.

Surprised it took that long for anyone to mention this game. At Death Valley, and we just took the wind right out of their sails. Ultimate BeamerBall game.
And I did not feel bad for Clemson at all, fuck 'em. (Grew up right by Clemson, still sick of their shit even though I haven't lived there in 14 years)

Tincher's no-no hands down. Of course football is what's going to come to mind for most everyone, but the football team has never pulled off a feat that remarkable.

but the football team has never pulled off a feat that remarkable.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'd argue that Tincher's performance in that game is the one of the greatest feats by a collegiate in any sport in the history of sports. Think about it. The baseball equivalent would not just be a collegiate pitcher no hitting a MLB team...it would be a collegiate pitcher no hitting a MLB All Star team. Beyond that, it would be an All Star team that arguably had six of the top 10 players of all-time on its roster. (Finch, Bustos, Osterman, Mendoza, Nuveman, Watley)

2007 #1 UNC basketball in Cassell days after being #5 Duke in Cameron
At one point we were up 23 points in the second half, and up by 20 with 3 and a half remaining and UNC just had absolutely no answer for our scoring. Of course, in patented Greenberg fashion, we slowed it down and let our foot off the gas way too early and almost allowed them to fully comeback, but we found the spark late and finished them off. For 36 of those 40 minutes, that was one of the most dominant basketball performances I've seen, and it was against the #1 team in the country.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
For all the lack of success in basketball we've had except for the last 2 years we've definitely had great wins against several #1 teams and others particularly at Cassell. Seems like the polar opposite of football where we are consistently good but rarely have ever punched above our weight.

Definitely the 2004 Maryland game. There was something in the air that night. Even Mike Tirico was playing into it by acting like it was completely normal every time the defense forced a turnover or the offense hit a big play. After that Bryan Randall run where he juked that UMD defender so hard that the defender froze, Tirico said "this team is so dialed in right now, it's not even funny."

Actually, the football win over Clemson in 2006 AT CLEMSON was very dominating. We scored in every way possible and the stadium was as quiet as ever in the history of Clemson football. I almost felt sorry for Clemson; It was incredible how much we dominated. This win may have become forgotten. Unfortunately, Clemson went on to rebuild a powerhouse program and we seem to have stalled.

You're thinking of 2007 (we played them in a home Thursday night game in 2006 and whipped them), but point taken. I unfortunately didn't make it to the 2007 game but it was sure fun to watch on TV.

Does UMBC - UVA game qualify as a "Hokie Win"...?
Everyone won that day.
Except LOLuva, of course.
38-0 Bro
The Maryland game where Darren's Evans went off and there was a pre-PJ GT shellacking 51-7 also come to mind.
253 yards, 1 touchdown, and this
You know it's good when even the announcer can't contain their "ohhhhhhhhh". That was incredible
"OOOOHHHHHAAAHAAWOOOHHAAAHHAAAA!! *the name of the defender* just got FLATTENED!"
That game wasnt so dominating in terms of the score, but the fact that Evans just forced his will on them all night long made it so satisfying.
And let's not forget that UMD had NEGATIVE rushing yards that night.

For dominant, I'd say it's a toss up between:
- Football: 1995 Sugar Bowl vs. Texas
- Football: 2003 Miami
For biggest win,
- Football: 2014 Ohio State at The Shoe.
- Men's Hoops: 2007 OT- Win over #5 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium / Win over #1 UNC at Home

That one time I got roasted by Beams on TTL.
I think it's story time.
Frank Beamer's version of letting loose with both barrels
Then he handed Jason a werther's. (not really)
https://newsok.com/article/3297069/beamers-shield-cant-hide-virginia-tec...
That Coach Beams will really get after ya!
Did he finish it off with "I Drink your Milkshake!"?
That opinion is completely out of whack, sir
And yet so true. Then again, it could be argued you personally permanently wrecked Hokie Hotline, as that was the catalyst for never taking live calls again.
Haha I'm glad you said it first because I was reading that I thought to myself
"Man....he was 100% right"
It was a very unpopular opinion at the time, but JiA was 100% correct.
So Jason in Arlington really did speak that damn truth?
I took one for the team.
*dam
Yea because 2010 and 2011 were such terrible seasons. Hate that we had to suffer through those.
Yeah, Tyrod's improvising was pretty good at covering up a bad offensive gameplan and playcalling on a weekly basis. I forget, how did things go after he left?
Well considering Tyrod only played in 2010 and then it was Logan in 2011, I guess things went pretty well after the year Tyrod left. And to have 2 different running backs break the single season rushing record in a 3 year span on top of having 2 record breaking receivers at the same time isn't ideal either for you either.
The 62-0 win over Syracuse in '99
The 2003 win over Miami
The 48-0 whipping of UVA in 1983 in Lane North
Not more dominant than some of these, but it would deserve an honorable mention:
1990 vs Virginia, 38-13
Deserves mention for sure. A win that came in the middle of a multi year UVA win streak. UVA came into Blacksburg ranked...we were not. My sophomore year at Tech. We stormed the field and brought down the goal posts after the game.
Hundreds of bourbon filled freezer bags were consumed in the stands that glorious day.
2007 Bass Fishing National Championship
That time we embarrassed Clemson in the 2018 ACCCG
You've jinxed us.
Nah, hokie07ME's just out here inventing the future
The game at Clemson in '07 still might be one of my all time favorites. Pick 6, Punt return TD, and a Kick Return TD all in the first half. Plus our defensive literally abused them all game. I almost felt bad for Clemson.
(Grew up right by Clemson, still sick of their shit even though I haven't lived there in 14 years)
"Thunder and Lightning looked like partly cloudy and mild"
-Scott van Pelt on Sportscenter
Clemson had 8 total rushing yards with CJ Spiller and James Davis.
Tincher's no-no hands down. Of course football is what's going to come to mind for most everyone, but the football team has never pulled off a feat that remarkable.
Under the radar dominant performance...
For all the lack of success in basketball we've had except for the last 2 years we've definitely had great wins against several #1 teams and others particularly at Cassell. Seems like the polar opposite of football where we are consistently good but rarely have ever punched above our weight.
i was at that Syracuse game so i'll go with that but I also liked the UNC game from last year.
It was fun as hell to be there, even if I was smack dab in the middle of Clemson seating and mildly fearing being tossed over the top of the stadium (only a few rows up from me, haha)
'06 was at Lane, '07 was at Death Valley.
Clemson win in Death Valley was pretty nice. I want to say 2005?
Yeah beating them in 1887 was pretty choice
38-0, bro
Back in '11 when Men's basketball beat Randolph-Macon by a score of 87-4.
Noon kickoffs have dominated my liver for years
