OT: Marine Corps Marathon

I wanted to see if any other TKPers are running the Marine Corps Marathon in October? I'm also trying to find a good way to rep the Hokies during the race. There isn't a great VT running tank top that's available for purchase (plus I usually wear one for my run club). Any other thoughts?

Hokiebird hat

If I could find a decent Tech running hat I'd totally rock one. The best i could find had a nike swoosh covering an entire side of the hat with only a little VT logo on the other side.

Running hat? I meant one of those plush toy + hat combinations that you see at Lane sometimes.

If you want a realistic option for wearing during a marathon, there's about 9000 Virginia Tech dri-fit style shirts and several options for visors

My wife and I will be there, possibly my father in law. I'll be repping the Hokies with VT gear of some sort. I'll be the tallish guy near the back, mostly walking. We're doing the 10k, not the marathon.

Good luck in the 10K. I'll be pretty envious of the shorter distance around mile 20 or so.

My stupid ass is planning on running in 2019. Furtherest I have ever run previously is 12 miles back in college. Nice midlife crisis for a 40 year old to undertake. I told the wifey it was better than a girlfriend and sports car...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Find a good training program and stick with it. When I did NYC marathon followed a training program provided by NYC Marathon, stuck to it (coming from the same running base as you... 12 mi. max) and did great... skimped on training for Marine Corps the next year and it was brutal.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

I ran in high school and picked it back up again about 2011 but was off and on. I really picked back up when I was in Spain and joined a run club when I got back which was the best motivation (I missed being part of a team like that). I'm happy to be back doing it again and once you hit double digit mileage again, you just want to do more the next time.

In regards to the lack of decent running tops, that drives me absolutely insane! I was looking at a few that would have been great last week, but none of them had the fiber content listed on the tag, and they didn't feel like cotton, but since I couldn't be 100% sure, I passed on them. Good luck in the race! Marathons are their own kind of fun.

I am a fan of the Nike Miler tops for race days.

getting your material right for a top is vital for long races...

How'd you get footage of me after my lunch run yesterday?

Chafing...it'll really get after ya.

I personally think you should go full Hokiebird mascot outfit. Great exposure for the program, and you would motivate others to run harder...

I might not qualify for Boston, but the guy in the Godammed Hokiebird suit is not beating me...

Leonard. Duh.

That is 100% what I'd be thinking if I saw someone running as the mascot.

This is so true. When I ran the Hatfield-McCoy marathon a few years ago (which I highly recommend, btw), there was a guy wearing the most obnoxious socks on the planet that kept leap-frogging me. I couldn't let him beat me, so I had to make sure I crossed the finish line well before him.

I think it happens every race, you find one person and declare them the guy you can't lose to.

For me it would be the cleaning crew.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Yeah, I pretty much aim to get out ahead of the cones being removed.

I hope I was that person to any Hoos on the course when I ran Richmond a few years ago. I had O&M shorts to go with the tank, but it turned cold the week before the race, so running tights it was. Sad. Richmond has excellent finisher swag, I still have the fleece blanket. Dog chewed up the hat though 😒

I need to find a men's tank top like that so I can anger some hoos in October!

Other than dropping dead in the 1st mile, great idea.

My first marathon was the Richmond Marathon in '08. There was a guy running wearing this...

I set my laser from "STUN" to "KILL"... and I actually had to put in work to beat him. He ran a very respectable 4 hour 15 minute race... considering the full max banana suit.

Leonard. Duh.

At the DC half this year, I saw a guy wearing a full polar bear mascot costume with the head. I think he finished around 2.5 hours.

My wife, dad and some of my dad's friends are running it. It's my wife and I's first marathon while my dad keeps saying it will be his last while he gets more into cycling and triathlons.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

This is even better than what I was picturing.

looks like it will breathe really well.../s

I'll be in the VIP tent next to the finish line. I always look out for Hokies as they're coming up the final hill.

Which is why I need more Hokie Swag for running!

If you think you can manage it for 26 miles, you could run with a VT flag of some kind.

Good luck with the run!

How was everyone's race? The sightseeing was really cool, but the three out and backs kinda sucked. The bridge was not as bad as I was hearing/expecting. The fan support was great on the mall, crystal city and the finish. Also, the blue mile was incredibly moving, especially how quiet it was.

What an amazing experience. I did the 10K, I'm not a marathoner, but still had an amazing race experience. Well put together on all accounts. Several moving moments with regard to wounded and deceased Marine veterans. I'll be back for sure.

The only bad experience I had was at the end after my wife, dad and I finished when we couldn't get out of the corral area with the water, Gatorade, snacks and recovery jacket due to all the families clogging up the exit by crowding us instead of waiting one block further. The last thing I wanted to do was to stand still for 5 minutes.

Other than that it was a great flat route.

I can relate to this. I ran the MCM 4 years ago and had the same experience. I just wanted to keep walking, but kept getting corraled in various directions. Also, finding the porta-johns at the post-race party was a chore - they were a long ways away.

I have since run Ricmond twice and like that race so much better.
