Yeah, I feel ya. Giles not looking good so far. I wouldn't be so concerned about Blacksburg killing them last night if they hadn't also been steamrolled in their scrimmage.
I mean Bluefield did win state last year but yeah but giles will still win 6 or 7 games

Anyone really. I ask because I have an old Graham-Giles playoff game ('89) that might be interesting for some older Giles grads. This was back in the old single wing days when Shawn Eaves was the man. He was one of the best high school running backs we played against back then.
I didn't go to giles i was homeschooled but i love me some single winging football from any years especially if its a year they won a state

Yep, great win for the Springers, but tell me when is it good sportsmanship to run a fake extra point field goal in order to purposely score a two point conversion when your team has just scored its 7th touchdown and is up 53-0? And then after the game Coach Loren Johnson "preached humility" to his players by asking them not to tweet or talk about the game? (this morning's RTD) Actions speak much louder than words, coach. Treat others, even huge rivals, as you would want to be treated. Disappointed in him for that coaching move.
Counterpoint: up big in the first game of the season is EXACTLY when you should run gimmick plays, in order to test them out, see what's good and what needs to improve in case later in the year you NEED to run that play. Plus, it's a 48 minute game. Coaches and teams shouldn't feel guilty about playing hard the whole time and scoring as often as they can, regardless of how big they're up. Especially early in the season when you're getting your first opportunity to run plays against another team. The scoreboard goes to 99, and there is no problem with teams trying to hit that.
Plus, aren't they still using a running clock in the second half after a certain margin is exceeded?
You're entitled to your opinion, but this the mentality of today's high school coaches? If so it's sad. I would be more accepting (but not much) if this wasn't High School football, if the players were of equal abilities or were recruited by both teams. But at 53-zip it is obvious this playing field was not level and these two teams were not equally matched. I don't care how good Herm has been in the past. You shouldn't do that stuff in high school athletic contests. You can play hard the whole game but do so without humiliating people.
I tend to agree but I do have to give him credit for one thing. It was 53-0 at halftime, meaning he took his foot off the gas in the 2nd half. I've heard of much worse in high school football. Some coaches would've gone for 100.
Just finished QB1 on Netflix (Its old I know). Bishop Gorman beat some team 89-8 at the end of their season. Thats absurd. Sadly, I think this mentality is becoming more and more frequent in high school football which sucks.
Can't speak for coaches, it's simply my personal opinion. But your argument seems to be largely emotional rather than rational. Things weren't stacked against one team, it's just that one team was overewhelmingly superior on the field in that particular game. That's part of the sport, especially in high school where the player pool is limited by geography. To be frank, I sincerely doubt that 53 points vice 52 changes the losing sides perception. They got their asses beat, and bad. Losing by one less point isn't going to make the players feel any differently. The people that are going to care are the ones in the stands. The fans who need something to highlight other than their team's inferiority on the field that game. The parents who need something to bitch about when their kid is shown to be something less than God's gift to football.
We are definitely polar opposites with our opinions about this and I am sure we could go back and forth on the reasons for our opinions for days. However I do need to respond one last time to a few of your words. My reaction is not due to an emotional reaction. It is derived from what I was taught about good sportsmanship: You show respect to your opponents. Always. Yes Hermitage "had their asses beat, and bad", but to those kids believe me, they will not necessarily remember the number of points they lost by, but they will remember having an opposing coach further demoralize them by running a trick play and embarrass them. That shouldn't happen.

I would bet my next month's paycheck CFB or CJF would have chosen to kick the extra point if they were the high school coach at HS.
I think the disconnect here is that I see it as part of the game without any deeper meaning being involved, whereas your view relies on assuming the intent of the opposing coach is malicious. That's what I meant emotional vice rational.
Also, that's not an article, it's an editorial. No facts are presented, it's solely opinion, and the guy doesn't even bother to present any supporting evidence or reasoning.
Running up the score wasn't the Beamer way. You'll have a tough time finding people around here that agree that it is not only acceptable but encouraged.
If we're being honest, how many times did Beamer really have the opportunity to run up a score if he wanted to? There aren't that many blowouts I can recall offhand, and damn near all of them were against cupcakes early in the season where the starters got yanked early to get backups reps (which is smart). Not running up the score wasn't necessarily even a choice for Beamer, it was dictated by parity, depth development, and the run-heavy ball control offense that was a hallmark of his tenure.
Nobody around here was complaining when we kept our foot on Carolina's throat for 60 full minutes last year.
Again, the discussion and last reply (yes, I am now done ;) ) was regarding HIGH SCHOOL football. Decisions made by those coaching highly impressionable 14-18 year old kids who are not all scholarship/recruited athletes.
Are you sure it was the coach's decision? We had a similar thing happen when I played high school football. We had been taught all season that if the other team's punt return unit lined up a certain way, one of our guys would audible at the line and we'd automatically fake the punt.
So, we're up 40-7 halfway through the 4th quarter in one game and getting ready to punt. The other team doesn't cover our receivers and one of the guys makes the fake punt call from the line. We fake it and our punter throws a 65 yard touchdown pass to go up 47-7. After the game, the other team just walked off the field and didn't shake our hands.
I can understand why, but I don't feel bad about it. We weren't trying to show them up...we were just doing what had been drilled into our head the whole season. I never heard our heach coach question the call either. Maybe he did in private, but not to us players.
Maybe you have a similar situation there? An automatic fake due to the way the defense was lined up.
I've been on both ends of these situations. Every coach I played for pulled all the starters and even most of the 2 deep early in the 3rd quarter.
Conversely, back in 9th grade we were getting crushed by a superior squad (on our home field but also their homecoming game-I can explain that later if desired) and they started to do all the "right" things. Run the ball, even in obvious pass situations, take time off the clock etc. I found that more humiliating than the score.
I never played football competitively, only soccer on the worst team in the district. One year we only had 11 show up for tryouts, so we only had 11 on the team, meaning all 11 of us were on the field at all times, and if someone had to miss a game we played a man down. I think we forfeit one game from having only 7 or 8 show up, and played one with only 9.
We lost a lot of games that season, but I think the most embarrassing one was in a game with 9 players, and the other team went up 6-0 in the first half playing 11-on-9. At halftime the opposing coach decided to only send out 9 to "make it more fair", but it didn't really make a difference as the final score was something like 10-0.
I agree a trick play is a bad look. Like another poster said though, it may have been a built in silent audible scenario. Either way, most dislike for unsportsmanship really comes from the emotional reaction of getting your tail whipped. For every player that is offended by the opposing coach keeping their foot on the gas there is another offended by the same coach taking it easy. My personal favorite approach is to clear the bench and keep calling the game as if the score was tied.
Totally agree on the trick play thing. Should not happen. There was a game here in Roanoke where Salem was up 77-7 at halftime against Hidden Valley. Salem scored every time they touch the ball, nothing fancy. Coach Mags gathered up the JV and, rumor has it, even some Andrew Lewis Middle school players. Final was 77-14. Not sure if anyone was happy about that.

What you said is essentially the opposite of what I've always heard. You don't "waste" trick plays on blowouts because 1) that puts the play on film for other teams to prepare for and 2) it's just unnecessary. Perhaps you will recall how upset VT fans were when Harbaugh pulled some play calling shenanigans late in Orange Bowl after the result was already determined?
Yeah, that does make sense, but there's benefits both ways. As far as unnecessary, I vehemently disagree. Go out and put up as many points as you can in whatever ways necessary, so long as you follow the rules. It's not dirty to keep your foot on the pedal for the full duration of the game. And frankly I can't really recall the reaction you mentioned. It clearly didn't matter to me enough to remember. The only thing I really remember being mad about that game was how utterly garbage we let ourselves look against an opponent who was not as superior as the score line would indicate.

After the game was out of hand late in the 4th, Stanford ran some plays with multiple shifts to get mismatches and then continued to throw. Some perceived it as trying to embarrass Bud Foster. Honestly it didn't bother me but I didn't think Aaron Rodgers laughing during the Emerald Bowl was an issue either. I don't agree that high school teams should run up the score without consideration of the level of competition though.
As long as the starters are out when the game is out of hand, I don't see an issue with running up the score. Get your B or C team players some burn and if the other team still can't stop you, then that's on them.
I always thought you put as many points as you can in the first half even if it's say 80 points. Then you step off the gas in the second half.

Wait when did Hermitage get bad at football?
A few things, as someone who is a Hermitage grad:
1. The head coach who had overseen their run of success over the last 15 years (Patrick Kane) left after last season. From what I've heard, there were a few players who ended up leaving Hermitage before this school year, presumably because Kane is no longer in charge. Not sure how much of an effect that might have had.
2. Ever since they opened Glen Allen HS in 2010, enrollment at Hermitage has been much lower than when I was a student in the early 2000s. There's still been a lot of talent in the Hermitage district, but the talent pool is smaller.
3. Highland Springs is the #1 team in Central VA. They may end up being state champs when it's all said and done. We shall see, but I expect Hermitage will still have a pretty good record at the end of the season.
Hermitage has been very good the last 15 years or so.... I moved from Henrico to the Roanoke Valley about 4 years ago, I guess things have changed. If they lose to Godwin , Deep Run or (gasp) JR Tucker, then you know there are issues.
It would be an absolute miracle if Tucker ever Beat Hermitage. I don't think Tucker has beaten Herm since 03.
I remember getting demolished by hermitage in '01 maybe. Their damn band was bigger than my entire high school.
I was in the Tucker Band so I witnessed a lot of Tucker beatdowns at the hands of Hermitage.
I remember playing the fight song a lot when we played Tucker! And it sounds like we were probably across the field from each other (I graduated from Hermitage in '06).
Tayvion Robinson had a great start to his season - 4 rushing TDs and 1 throwing. Bayside isn't great this year but decent. People at the game said no one really got close to him last night.
I didn't see last nights game but saw his last scrimmage (against Grassfield) where he was untouchable. Kid is legititably fast and quick, making people miss multiple times. Will be a great weapon in the slot / jet sweeps after a year with Hilgart.

Coaching. A lot of rumors of things not being run well at all. And to emphasize how bad its gotten from Danny Lewis, one of the writers on Virginiapreps, Last year the Panthers gave up 149 points in 13 games, this year they have given up 135 points in 2 games! They play Thomas Sale next week and a good chance the score is just as bad.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just watched a South Florida player run his second kick return back for TD in the GT game. Kid's 5-7, buck seventy something. Speed trumps size in some situations, seems to me.

Massaponax took Hanover to the woodshed, wow. This coming from a Hanover team that almost made it to states several years in a row. The reclassification hasn't brought them positive outcomes.
A lot of Wednesday games, Varina hammering Herm, and Manchester hammering Monacan. Manchester's qb, Brendon Clark is a Notre Dame commit. Playing like a young Peyton Manning originally committed to Wake but had a good camp season, and scored more offers. He is definitely a steal.

We played them in a scrimmage in '99 or '00 and they ran some crazy triple option where two players both got in the QB under center position to take the snap. It was the craziest thing ever.
