Robert McNeish, Virginia Tech Hokies, 1948-50

This was so long ago that Virginia Tech was called VPI (Virginia Polytechnic Institute) and the mascot was the Gobblers.
Anyway, the lone highlight in the McNeish era came in the second-to-last game of the 1949 season, when the Gobblers beat lowly Richmond 28-13 on the road, then used the momentum from that day to tie VMI 28-28 on the last day of the year.
McNeish went 1-0-2 in his final three games of the 1949 season, and that was enough for the Gobblers to bring him back again for 1950. But they lost every game by at least 20 points and McNeish was replaced by Frank Moseley, who went 54-42-2 in 10 seasons at VPI, including six top-three finishes in the Southern Conference.
UVa also gets an entry on the list for Richard Voris' three-season tenure with the Hoos, which began in 1958 and ended with a 1-29 record.

Never got a chance to get in depth with him, but my high school shop teacher and assistant track coach played at VPI during these years...He was a great man.

Nothing like writing a story using today's version of Richmond and VMI to explain who they were. In 1949 they weren't lowly FCS teams.
If any of you have a chance to go to the College Football Hall of Fame, I found it most interesting that Tech has always been a place where good coaches have found success. Up until Beamer, they used to move to bigger pastures instead of staying and wining at Tech.
There were quite a few coaches in the hall of fame, that had a winning road stop at Tech.
Gives me hope that we can get over the hump eventually.
Believe it or not, many of Virginia Tech's former coaches have ties to Bear Bryant.
Jennings Whitworth went 4-24-2 at Alabama from 1955-1957.

If that list included basketball, it would have to contain Tony Bennett. After all, he was the first basketball coach to lose to a 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament, when 16-seed UMBC defeated 1-seed UVA 74-54 in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
