Barring a huge turnaround, Fedora is gone. DJ Durkin will eventually be fired, and Paul Johnson hinted that this was his last year in his post game presser. We can only pray.
Paul Johnson is old, but I didn't realize he wanted to retire anytime soon.
I watch all of his pressers, because they are usually golden! Some reporter asked him about play calling when they had 595 yards of offense, and he said "next year when someone else is calling plays, maybe they will be better".. lol - likely trolling the reporter, but he threw it out there.
I dont really want Fedora to go anywhere. I like him at UNC. Johnson on the other hand...
Exactly, Fedora is kinda like Groh @ LOLUVA. Wish there was some way we could help keep him there.
Groh holds the distinction of being the last LOLUVA coach to beat us, which might have earned him some time.
I don't think I want to see Fedora earn time in the same manner.
Fedora might be fired mid year. He could very well start the season 0-6

Considering he signed an extension in May 2018 that takes him to 2022, my guess is he was joking about being fired in a roundabout way.
Am I the only one who is afraid that GT could become a legitimate contender if they hire a decent coach? They are located in the largest metropolitan area in the 4th best state for recruiting; granted they have lots of competition, but a decent coach could swing that.
GT's a tough place to coach in that academics can be a problem in recruiting. I believe I remember hearing that all students, regardless of major, are required to take calculus.
I know that GT doesn't offer any liberal arts majors/BA's, just Bachelors of Science.
Is it possible to graduate any accredited university without calculus? I though taking basic calc (even math empo calc) was pretty standard at every reputable school?
It's not an easy job by any means, and the level of support from the school will always be tepid, but the right coach could certainly do some major damage there. I don't think they'll ever be like UGA, but they could be a consistent top 25 team and threaten for major bowls every few years.

You are absolutely right. Georgia, the entire state, supports UGA unless you have some strong connection to GT.

Almost nobody in Georgia cares about GT. It's all UGA. That renders their location meaningless as a recruiting advantage. And with their academic hurdles (yes, there are some), they're actually at a recruiting disadvantage.
GT doesn't concern me.
And everyone in southwest GA is either Alabama or Auburn fans. I mean the 3d largest city in the state, Columbus, is like 40 min from Auburun. 2 hrs from GT.
Columbus is not even a city. Its like a spec on the map.

If things dont turn around I would say at least half of them are out next year. Clay Helton feels pretty safe, but from the link above, AD didnt hire him and there are some young coaches who are more appealing...
Well see, I feel like we could see some mid-season let go's. Were only two games in, but some of these teams just dont look prepared or ready for any kind of football.
I think Taggart is going to get a pass this year. He'll work the kinks out and get that thing headed in the right direction.

IDK, if they don't make it to a bowl game, I think that he's gone. Too much talent for them to not go 6-6.
If needed they could go to "max protect" on passing downs where they'd basically be able to double team every pass rusher. Each play, at least 1 of their 5* WR's should be able to get open, with the notable possible exceptions of playing Miami and UF.
On Saturday, Samford only put 3 receivers in patterns and they were wide open vs the 4* & 5* FSU secondary. That's flat out unacceptable, unless Samford had Sammy Watkins, Nuke and Julio Jones as their 3 WR's.
I agree - Taggarts MO is to rip teams apart in year 1, and rebuild in year 2. Every place he's coached (except Oregon) he's done (and completed) a true rebuild (hence why he has a losing record). If anyone at FSU didn't know this going in... well, they're an idiot.

Yep. worse case Taggart is a Ron Zook. Florida team full of 5 stars going 7-5. He's not going to go 3-9 with all of that talent.
If FSU goes 3-9 I've no doubt the NCAA would figure out a way to get a 3 win team a bowl bid.

Herman, isn't going anywhere. Durkin and Herman come from the same coaching tree, so looking at it objectively it's not hard to see how UMD won. Of course Texans fans aren't going to be happy with it, but they know each other to well.
Also the buyout would be insane, and I know they grow money there, but canning 2 head coaches in such a short time period is not a good financial move.
I'm not sure why it's not working for Herman. Maybe it's the culture of B12 offenses? His offense isn't that wide open. Maybe it was the two games against UMD that stick out and they both had their mitigating circumstances (UMD players rallying around their problems was totally predictable).
But if UT fired Herman and hired Fuente and then we hired Herman, I would be okay with that. Just feels like he's a guy who is going to win.
It's the Houston factor. Somehow coaches are very successful there, and then they go on to stink everywhere else. Sulmin is the other guy this has happened too.
Also, the 2 losses to UMD, I just chalk that up to both coaches knowing each others system very well, probably because they are the same.
I mean why though? They have a dumb bloodthirsty fan base. If you're Fuente why put yourself in that position except maybe to bargain for more money here?

Living in MI, there is a lot more commotion and unrest with the UM fanbase. However, I think he gets another year at least, probably two. He's on the hook for a lot of money as well I believe although UM has not let that hold them back before.
Edit: Looks like Harbaugh's current contract is through 2021 at about $5M annually. If he is canned, the university is on the hook for all of it. That salary would be supplemented if he found a new job, but he is guaranteed his base salary one way or another
Friend of mine is in the accounting department of the athletic program. She was all excited about getting the contract to Harbaugh as she had been working on it.
I simply said "You guys are making him the highest paid coach in all of football (at the time) and he has literally never won a damn thing. Not a super bowl or national championship. "
She thought I was crazy, but I kind of feel I was right.
Michigan needs a modern day offense to compete with Ohio State and Harbaugh will never do that.

Nah...to me he's fine (for now). He would need to lose to aOSU this year and again next yr before his seat gets hot. That is unless the front falls off around other games in addition to losing to aOSU as well, then it could be sooner. But for now, he's making enough apparent progress to keep the other Michigan men happy. Besides, what other "Michigan Man" is out there that would be a better fit (other than the Hatter?), since they pride themselves on having a MM, since the previous two non-MM hires went so well. (/s)
Yep. They hired (and paid for!) the best possible coach they could find for their program. You gotta give him plenty of time to make it work.

Why does everyone look at Stanford as some place that can't succeed. They have the most successful overall athletic department in the county, one of the largest budgets, a great academic reputation, west coast and beautiful campus. And he only led them to one season with more than 8 wins, I think Shaw has done more at that school than Jim.

Before Harbaugh, Stanford was the Duke of the Pac-10. He took over a 1-11 team. Shaw took over a 11-1 team. Shaw may have achieved more wins, but it's a lot easier when you've already started halfway up the hill.
And the academic reputation is what works against the perception of athletic performance. Stricter academic standards usually shrinks the pool of football players you can pull from.
Yeah, my fav memory of Harbaugh is beating Pete Carroll's USC team on the road at 39.5 pt dogs.
You don't get to be 39.5 pt dogs without being really really bad first.
Shaw may be the real reason for that climb. It's one viable theory for seeing Harbaugh's teams struggle with all of the talent that he's bringing in, while Stanford is the same Stanford that they were when Harbaugh was there.
Harbaugh has literally had one bad year, and he won 8 games. At Michigan, he took a 5-win team and immediately improved to 10 wins, and in year 2 he was one bad 4th down measurement from the CFP. Last year was disappointing for sure, but it was also after the biggest departure of talent in one year a team has seen in some time. They were dead last in the country in returning production and still put out a top-10 defense. The Notre Dame loss was ugly, but it was still only one game.
Pretty sure he was 10-3 that season, with the 3 losses being a total of 5 points.
Yup, one a freak loss to Iowa (at least they didn't give up 50, lol), then the 4th down against Ohio State, and the third a close loss to FSU and an other-worldly Dalvin Cook. I get why people were disappointed, but that team was really good.
He went 4-8 and 5-7 in first two years at Stanford. At what point does having only 1 win over any decent team in or out of conference matter though?
With a Stanford team that had just gone 1-11, a program that had been terrible since probably Bill Walsh got them to like 7 wins (I'll be honest, I'm not researching all that, but I think we can agree Stanford was historically terrible before Harbaugh). Those are both good seasons when you consider the context.
Shaw was the OC for Harbaugh. I think it's fair to say that he had a lot of influence over Harbaugh's success at Stanford, especially considering how he continued it.

I don't know why you put Herman there. He did a great job at Houston. He'll have a few more years before he's on the hot seat.
All but the last two or three are HUGE stretches. I'd say there's a 99% chance all of Taggart, Herman, Helton, and Sumlin keep their jobs, there's just no way first year or second year coaches are getting fired without off-the-field scandals. They'll all face a ton of criticism, but barring an 0-12 season, any hot seat talk is just overreacting to early results.
Yeah... As much as I want to, I wouldn't read too much into that Sam State scare. The Hokies were in the EXACT same boat in 2010 with the school that shall not be named.
On Labor Day, you could tell that FSU KNEW they were going to win that game. That was a SERIOUS letdown... maybe worse than the Boise game.
Glass half full theory requires that one credits FSU for not losing to their school that shall not be named.
They also had the whole "fake injury" distraction. VT was still talking about the BSU game, up to Friday. 5 day prep is difficult enough.
I think Coach Fu did the right thing and didn't even review film of the FSU game, with the team, in prep for W&M.

Fedora's buyout is $14 million. If UNC wants to fire him they will have to negotiate that down substantially.

nah, he's got a win against a 17th ranked VT, and a second ranked Clemson under his belt. And I think they believe in him.
He is a good coach, and Syracuse has a ceiling.

I remember after what UNC did in 2015, there was some discussion about whether or not anyone would want Fedora as the next VT head coach. I'll admit, I participated in some of those discussions until I saw how poorly he managed the end of the game in 2015 against VT. He needs a plethora of talent to have any shot at winning the Coastal, and Fuente basically took over their recruiting backyard overnight.
I realize this is super early but Dan Mullen losing to Kentucky has to have the Florida fanbase angry...they hadn't lost to the Wildcats in 31 years. Lot of discontent in the state of Florida these days....erm, more so.

If Mullen loses that game two or three seasons in without having won the SEC or at least the SEC East once he'd be gone. It's probably best for him that the bandaid got ripped off this early in his tenure.
UNC's struggles began when Gene Chizik resigning.
Honestly, I think Chizik saw the writing on the wall and got out of dodge.
After their 2015 season that saw them go 11-3 and win the Coastal, they dropped off to 8-5 in 2016. Plus they lost a ton of offensive production from that 2016 team and everyone figured they'd struggle on O, which is exactly what happened.
Word on the street is Gene Chizik didn't like Fedora's coaching style very much.
He also wanted to move back to Auburn to watch his kid play high school football. He is actually in the restaurant business now...and STILL cashing Auburn paychecks.

Nobody's mentioned Narduzzi. In 2017, he signed a 7-year contract through 2024, but since he's taken over in 2015, they've had two 8-5 seasons followed by a 5-7 season last year and a huge loss already this year at home to Penn State in which they looked hideous.
