ECU has announced they will not travel to Blacksburg. Announcement can be found here on ECU's website.
Word in the press room is that VT wanted to wait another day. ECU didn't want to do that, and decided to travel to Florida for their game next week instead.
#Hokies preferred to wait another day to make the call, I'm told. ECU decided it wasn't traveling.— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) September 11, 2018

It's the right call.
I respect you, but I will downvote you for that
This is the dumbest shit I have ever read on this website. This is borderline full arnie.
*whispers* it's actually harmless, obviously done in jest, has been done before on this website, and the reaction is more ridiculous than the offense.
Did you read why he's mad about the game not going on in the other thread?
NM
That's cool. Have another DV to match the one you gave me.
Dude is about to go from plaid in one thread to back to back blurs in another.
Might I suggest edits before you have less turkey legs than fans at the F-ing UVA wine mixer?
Let me try to help and maybe read the guidelines for yourself.
Damn dude, from damn near plaid to blurred.
Sinking like a... stone, if you will.
He makes the plaid comments to fund his controversial opinions.
Kinda like when I exercise and then go eat whatever the hell I want. It evens out.
Does it?
I always say that, but I don't think it evens out. Maybe when I was 20.
Just calories in and calories out baby. So just make sure "what you want" doesn't have a shit load of calories lol.
Calories in and calories out does not work absolutely. I mean, mathematically it should. And it's great for generalized weight loss if you are well overweight and/or way overeating. But... The human body is a pretty amazing machine that is designed to handle famine.
I assume if you had some way to truly count the "calories out" it could be a perfect tool for weight loss.
I was trying to lose that last 10 pounds several years back. Could not break through. Dropped calories in to 900/day and worked out cardio and resistance 3 hours a day, 6 days a week.
Didn't lose a single pound during 2 months of that.
You've sold me. I'm never working out again.
That's the spirit
True, I mean it is literally what happens to lose weight. But I agree that it isn't a simple matter when applied practically.
With that caloric intake, you were probably too tired to cardio enough to hit a threshold level to have any benefit. If you want to start a fire, you gotta add kindling. Still though, it's hard to believe you didn't lose one pound, just with the 900 calories per day. What was your caloric intake before? 901?
I think my last meal and alcohol intake was well over 900 calories....
Also, the last two years living in New Orleans made it virtually impossible to lose weight. Them Nawlins' people like to eat good.
He said "and then go eat whatever the hell I want. It evens out."
My point is that worked when I was 20. Now it doesn't. Either I don't work out hard enough, or "whatever the hell I want" has more calories now.
Something, something metabolism changes...
You probably live a more sedentary life now unfortunately. That tends to happen as we age.
Perhaps.
Growing up I was the skinniest guy in school. The lunch ladies always gave me extra helpings because they figured I didn't get fed at home. I ate like a horse and never gained weight until I turned 25. The metabolism change came suddenly and markedly, both my wife and I noticed that all of a sudden, I was eating a bit less and gaining weight. Fast forward to my mid fifties and I was pushing 230. Went on the Atkins diet. I mean I really went on it, bought the book, kept an honest diary of my carb intake, followed the instructions to the letter, and lost about 35 lbs. While I went off the diet, I changed a lot of my eating (and drinking) habits as a result of it, and now at 68, I'm 187. I already worked physical jobs, so I always got a ton of exercise, but it was the strictness of the diet that did the trick for me. Atkins isn't for everyone, but if you actually follow it strictly, you WILL lose weight. Your cholesterol levels will improve and your triglycerides will essentially disappear.
I REGRET NOTHING
Dont hate the player, hate the game. Aww hell, I love the game.
Next time you have a thought, just let it go. It doesn't matter what the thought is, just forget about it because it was a ignorant one.
W&M not traveling to Elon for their game this weekend. Maybe they want another crack at the Hokies in Lane.
Larry Fedora looking at this..

-Larry Fedora
You're thinking of GaTech
The right call for sure. Kinda sucks to not get some more development, but with a couple guys nicked up it's not the end of the world to get an extra bye week.
Seeing that ECU made the call (not the home team), obviously they have taken note of our hurricane game prowess.
Seriously, this was the right call, no matter who made it.
Hold on, if they're going straight to florida, why don't they just come to Blacksburg early, then go to florida straight from the Burg. Chances are Blacksburg won't be hit too hard. I don't know, just seems like they could wait another day before making that call.
Because they still have to travel to Florida after they come to Blacksburg. This is safer for their players and they probably needed to make the decision now in order to secure a hotel for the entire team. The longer they wait the less likely they are to find accommodations.
I call bull shit on this. How is going to Florida now in the interest in player safety?
1. the storm isn't going anywhere near Florida
2. travel to Blacksburg (with the storm coming), then have to find a place to stay after the game before traveling to Orlando since they won't be going back to Greenville because of the storm.
One of the models I looked at earlier has the storm cutting through NC then pushing up into Tennesse and Kentucky before dumping heavy rains our way. Even if they stay in the area until Wednesday or Thursday, they then have to travel to Orlando on Friday.
This is the easier option for them because it means they can get rooms now in the same hotel for the entire team, travel tomorrow to Orlando before the storm hits since their campus is closing, and then can sit safe in one place instead of trying to travel to multiple places.
You don't have to like it, but it IS safer if you stop to think about it.
If you ignore the two latest model runs of the Euro.
There is no reason they can not head to Blacksburg tomorrow and no indication that they will not be able to leave Blacksburg for Florida on Sunday (worst case scenario they have to wait in Blacksburg to go to Florida on Monday or Tuesday). The ECU team is going to be in hotels through their trip to Florida no matter what at this point.
Weird ECU wanted to go straight to Florida considering models are showing that it's not going to arrive until Late Thursday/Friday morning and is looking increasingly likely that Blacksburg doesn't get more than a couple inches of rain. Wish they would have waited to get a more clearer picture of what it was going to do like the Hokies. But hey, playing ECU is a lose-lose (win doesn't matter, loss certainly does) for us, so no harm done.
The only harm is this "winnable" game was going to provide real time reps for our young players, which was sure to pay dividends later in the season.
Sucks on our end that we miss out on a game, and a home game at that. But I am not convinced that it's that much of a loss for our team. Extra time to review film and rest/heal up from the last two weeks, and we still have ODU as one more tune-up before ACC play.
Is it bad for me to expect the ODU game to be along the lines of 80-3 with all this extra prep time?
I'll be happy with 1-0, dont get me wrong. But I feel like 3 or 4 days extra prep time should definitely show.
I wouldn't be surprised if the ODU game ended up being moved to Blacksburg. I have a hard time believing that area will be in good shape a week after a Hurricane, even if all they get is a ton of rain.
Edit: I just checked and their football stadium is in Evacuation Zone B, only a few blocks from Zone A which surrounds much of the nearby are. The whole surrounding area could end up in pretty bad shape.
It is going to have to be cataclysmically bad before ODU gives up that game. They are counting on it.
Hypothetically speaking, if the game got moved to Blacksburg, how would that work financially? Would they still give ODU the same payout and cover travel expenses? I'm assuming there would be a lot of negotiating?
I want an amended contract on my desk at the close of business.
I grew up in the same neighborhood as the ODU campus, a couple of blocks from the stadium. While the area is susceptible to flooding when the storm hits, as soon as the storm moves on and the tides return back to normal the water will go with it. The drainage is good. As long as none of the major bridges and tunnels getting into Norfolk are fine it won't be a problem. Since this storm looks like it is going to be even further south now, I can not imagine next week's game is going to be in jeopardy.
If I were Whitt, I would go ahead and cancel the game scheduled for Sept. 21, 2019.
ECU could have waited to see if it would be safe to play in Blacksburg on Sat. (current indications are that it will) and then travel to FL from Blacksburg.
I am not sure there would be any good replacements available at this point. I feel that it would only result it bad press for VT & Whit. I would be OK with replacing
anyall of the ECU dates from 2022-2025 though.Good point
How does "Go 0-0" on the week resonate with the "Go 1-0" crowd?
I think that's the free space on the bingo board
Not as good.
It's called a "Browns Week" because it's not a loss but you don't feel good about it either.
Usually I would be very upset about this, but since we were scheduled to play ECU I couldn't be happier!
I'm only bummed not to see my Hokies play. Last 2 weeks were definitely fun and entertaining and we sort of got that fire under our belly, lets hope we can continue on that path...
Agreed. The off-season is too long and this has been an exciting season thus far.
IMO this is much to do about nothing. In regards to this back lash reaction from us, that is.
Given all the scrutiny right now about player safety with pre-season work outs and everything else ADs are getting, I can't fault the ECU AD for making a call no matter how much we want to arm-chair-QB his decision. Lest we forget these are students after all, so no they ideally cannot be just stuck in a bus and living out of motels no matter how awesome of an idea certain posters might think it would be. They actually need to study and get educated, as well as have some semblance of a normal life. ECU AD serves the needs of their university and their student athletes, not ours. A lot of this pitch-fork stuff from our fans looks incredibly, INCREDIBLY stupid.
It's just a football game, folks. There's an entire season left for us. If we don't make it to the ACCCG or play offs or even *Gasp* the Nat. Champ game because ECU didn't play us, then let's talk.
I know you don't mean to come off as misinformed, but it has been noted at least a dozen times that ECU cancelled classes for the rest of the week starting at Noon yesterday. The athletes weren't going to have a semblance of a normal life regardless of if they played our game this Saturday or not. They are going to be living out of hotels for the next 10 days regardless.
Whit wanted to make a rational decision based off the best possible up-to-date info (which now shows the hurricane shifting south and not bringing rain, if much at all to Blacksburg, until Sunday) but ECU jumped the gun and wanted to move on to their next game in Florida.
This wasn't ultimately about player safety or even being there for their families, otherwise they would have realized they had time to make a rational decision about a storm not coming until Friday or would have required them to stay and help their families at home instead of heading to FL. Meteorology advancements are mostly great in helping prepare, but are way too inaccurate far out to start worrying like we all did about this storm over a week before it makes landfall (coverage started last Friday on this storm).
What nobody seems to be grasping here is that ECU is a North Carolina public school. We make stupid decisions regarding school and the weather all the time. You should see us when snow is in forecast.
Pirates get a pass. Get over it, and look at the bright side. Maybe without the 100-0 loss that they were going to suffer this weekend, Scottie Montgomery is brought back for another year. We want that guy to keep coaching the Pirates.
Damn, your glass is really half full on this.
ECU was pushing its students to get the heck out of dodge ASAP (the dorms are closing today at 10 AM). They shouldn't require the football players to remain on campus any longer than the regular students just to allow Tech to make a decision on whether the game was played.
Not that this scenario would have happened since it appears Florence isn't headed towards Blacksburg, but imagine if they held their football players on campus an extra day waiting on Tech's decision only to learn that we were cancelling the game...
Additionally, there is a lot involved with mobilization and housing of a football team with regards to logistics and cost. ECU made the smart decision to only require one last minute change (go to FL early), instead of two (go to Blacksburg early, go to FL early).
I'm certain that Whit would have offered to feed the players and staff and help find a nearby hotel to put them up in. Certainly would have been cheaper than cancelling the game, which for 65k tickets at $50 (might actually be higher) is going to cost them $3.25 million, not to mention revenue from concessions and memorabilia.
The more I think about it, the more I realize we are almost certainly going to try to reschedule the game, if only because of the huge revenue loss we'd suffer otherwise.
Let's say that the game gets rescheduled by adjusting the GT Thursday night game. Now, instead of one mid-week game, you have three back to back Saturday home games, two of which weren't scheduled. Would it be worth the possible revenue hits on those other games, especially the GT game, or would it be easier to just cut the losses on the one game?
1) I don't see how revenue for the BC game would be affected at all.
2) I don't see how revenue for an ECU game scheduled on 10/27 would be anywhere near as low as the revenue lost by moving GT to 10/20.
I feel like the majority of game-day revenue comes from ticket sales, and they've already mostly been sold. At the very least, I'd expect there to be at least 80% attendance for both games, meaning you'd at most expect to lose 20% of revenue from the GT game, and you'd easily make up for it by not having to refund the tickets for the ECU game.
As much as I hate the idea from a football standpoint, there is no doubt in my mind that Whit will do whatever he can to make this game happen. It's just worth way too much money. I mean, hell, even just in ticket sales that one single game is worth at least 5% of our revenue for the entire season, just by looking at the chart from the thread with the intentional clickbait title.
But what you don't understand is that this isn't Whit's call. If ECU needs to make a decision based on their knowledge for player safety or otherwise, then they will. And they did. They are willing to forfeit the game (from at least what I know now). It's not like they are trying to have their cake and eat it too. What folks fail to grasp is that this has nothing with Whit needed to make a call - it was never in his hands.
And as noted below, decisions need to be made for all students since it's a public university. Imagine what the outrage would've been if something had occurred to a student / students as a result of trying to make this game occur. One cannot make a last-minute decision just to placate the VT fans who are all of a sudden outraged that they can't go view a game in the rain. Logistics is a bitch, and to coordinate for the entire campus is difficult enough to do without having to make exceptions just for the football team.
And lastly, again - this is JUST a football game. Relax. Let's all take a collective deep breath that our players get an extra rest week to heal up and not potentially be dinged up by accident. Given our depth at certain positions we certainly could use the rest.
So yes we're all disappointed we can't see a game, but that's life. Get over it and move on.
What do y'all think about Whit apologizing to individual buttblasted people on Twitter. I saw a few apologies from him yesterday to random people with opinions and I thought it was a pretty soft look tbh. If you're gonna stand by what you believe in about them cancelling early on us, then stand by it and just not get out into the weeds kowtowing to randos on Twitter.
I won't comment about the context, but apologizing doesn't make you soft. It takes a strong person to apologize. I'd argue only children and ignoramus folks think that apologizing makes you look weak.
That tweet was soft though... softer than a Charmin Ultra Soft Toilet Paper....
Imagine if we had Wendy's (restaurant) type of twitter game, we could've really roasted ECU.
I'd agree, it takes a strong person to apologize for something that was very generic, made out of humor, and so unthreatening.
I'm not saying I have a problem with either sides reaction. But a storm that is about to do Billions of dollars in damage to people's property isn't really the time for a "roast."
Don't have a problem with it. He had to apologize after the @VT_Football account put out its garbage.
Once those same people started throwing his apologies back in his face, that's when you really saw what was going on.
Got an email from the Athletics Dept saying the ECU tickets were being refunded
Which can only mean there won't be a game rescheduled for the ACCCG week, in case we don't win the Coastal.
Nope they are still looking. ECU already has a game with NCST that weekend as a makeup for both of them so it was never going to be ECU.
More proof that the butt pirates are scared as shit to play us
If that was true they wouldn't play NC State. More likely they just want to double dip
I know, I just wanted an excuse to call them butt pirates.
I don't even know where to begin to look for this stuff, but I'd hope them rescheduling, along with everything else they did wrong in terms for canceling the game, means they have forfeited their payday from us.
Not ECU, but VT would still be honoring the tickets for the ECU game on 12/1. Refunds indicate that odds are slim for a 12th regular season game.
Not necessarily. Because the ECU game as a certain face value and a potential opponent may have a lower one giving out refunds now and charging for any new game if needed makes sense.
Except when they said they were looking for a replacement they said the ECU tickets would be reused for that game, or refunded if they don't find a replacement or if we make the ACCCG.
Since they're refunding, that means they didn't find a replacement. Or they lied to us a couple weeks ago.
I didn't see anything in the email about it, but did Whit not also say that if we didn't find a way or team to make it up that you would also be able to have the choice to put the refund toward your HC donation for next year? Or was that just speculation that someone mentioned on TKP? I can't remember where I saw that earlier.
I know we can send the refund right back to the HC after we get it, but it would have been nice for them to just send it there for us if we wanted.
They're still looking for someone to schedule if needed, but options are slim
Per Bitter on Twitter, it does sound like we are looking to outright cancel the ECU series over this whole thing.
Sauce?
I'm doing a screen grab here to ensure that the question and answer show up in the right order.
Please please please...ad infinitum
Can someone find that quote of mine where I said that cancelling the series would result in an immediate donation of X to the Hokie Club from your resident treadmill runner?
If not, then it never happened...
http://www.thekeyplay.com/comment/720233#comment-720233
Looks like you may get off on a technicality since we may have already played our last ECU game.
You know what? Fuck it, this can be redeemed anytime after the series is officially over, whether it dies a natural death or is put out of its fucking misery. @Whit you just gotta make it official.
