Remember when Swoffy said he doesn't think the ACC TV deal isn't impacting us at all when compared to the Big Ten and SEC?
About that....
That being said, I don't take much stock in this. They valued the Carolina Hurricanes last year at $200m about 2 weeks before pen went to paper on a $500m sale. And then they cried 'fake news' as the deal was being announced by the team itself.

Their franchise valuations are always WAY off. They had the Clippers valued below $527m (not in the top-10) in 2013, and then Steve Ballmer bought the team for $2B in 2014.
Having said that, this is a revenue estimation, not a ranking based on perceived market value.

Yep. he is actually too stupid to leverage the best basketball league in the country in his total TV negotiations. Hey ESPN, you want the Duke/Carolina hoops game or ACC tourney? well pony up A LOT more for football or we go to Fox, etc. He is a joke of a commissioner- 20 years behind the times.

I completely agree with this when it comes to the ACC TV deal and a few other issues, but the ACC as a football conference is also held back by a much more difficult to fix institutional disregard by too many teams for football. We just have too many teams with fanbases who refuse to fill even the smallest of ACC stadiums and alumni who don't open their checkbooks for football. We will always fall behind B1G and SEC on revenue numbers overall because of this.

I agree. Swofford is the symptom of a much more institutional "Carolina Mafia" mindset in the ACC. UNC Duke and Wake really don't care about football at all. Will give N.C. St credit as their fans are pretty passionate. Then admitting small NE private schools like BC and Cuse, schools that equally are indifferent about football. The leadership of this conference just does not get the fact that football is king in terms of athletics revenue.
Agree with previous comments on missed leverage because of ACC basketball status, and we have several very strong football brands as well but the ACC doesnt care/isn't creative enough to modify the divisional alignment and scheduling to have more frequent VT/FSU VT/Clemson Miami/Clemson etc. Swofford didn't have it in him get gutsy and leverage more out of ND in their little sweetheart deal, and the lack of a fully functional ACC Network this late in the game is frankly embarrassing. Carolina Mafia needs to wake up or get out.

Would be funny to see a divisional realignment based on football or basketball. VT, Miami,GT,Clemson,FSU,NC State,Pitt vs UVA, Syracuse, BC, Wake, UNC, Duke, Louisville,

I think the conference championship game is so overrated, IMO. I miss the days of whoever had the best conference record won it. Honestly it's a model that worked for the SEC and others tried to copy but haven't quite lived up to the hype. The ACC football package is much more lucrative and desirable with their best football brands playing each other more often. And the realignment and current divisional setup does that brand a massive disservice. Absolutely no excuse to play FSU/Clem/UL/NC State once every six years.

The divisional alignment is one reason I am currently opposed to a "best conference record" title game or champion. There are times a crappy team will have the best record or the best team may be from the Coastal but ain't played nobody in the Atlantic (hence the Clemson-FSU title game, which was technically already played because they're in the same divisions). This one has to be thought out long and hard. If they keep "best record" and the same divisional alignment, there has to be some sort of no rematch clause IMO. But I'm not doing the long hard thinking.

If they were to switch to "top two teams by record" they would almost certainly blow up the divisions and make a regular rotation with a handful of permanent rivals, almost identical to how they make the basketball schedule where each team has 2 rivals they play twice each year (for us it's UVA and Miami) and then 2 more rotating home-and-home slots. That way, you could add a team to get to 15, and have a rotation where you play every team twice in a 4 year period, except your 2 rivals who you play every year.
In any case, this arrangement is not currently allowed under NCAA rules, which state that you either need to have 2 division champions, or the top 2 teams after full round-robin play.

I still think Wake should be given the boot. They for the most part suck at basketball and football and are a small school with thus a small alumni base.

The SEC, with Wake, gets an end-of-year, in-state rivalry game with an NC school - Duke?
The ACC, with Vandy, gets an end-of-year, in-state rivalry game with a TN school - Tennessee?
Both conferences get an additional ACC/SEC rivalry game on Thanksgiving weekend. Everyone wins.
Both small private schools. Better at roundball than foosball. Win-win.

Didn't even see in the article a link of the remaining schools. What blows my mind is that there is only ONE ACC school in the top 25. You would think the recent success of Clemson would've at least provided the conference two schools in the list. I know FSU was raking in cash, but I didn't realize they were killing it like this (41m profit).

I get the feeling that the TV money is about to drop a bit for everyone, as we transition from traditional cable into the future of streaming services.

I'm only 2 weeks into my Specialty Master's program, but we are screwed because we have this damn contract with ESPN.
My fix, you create your own Digital Network App. Give the non-revenue sharing sports and classic games away for free. Charge a 9.99 a month for revenue producing sports.
Start producing your own content and investing in your own broadcasting.
Cuts the middle man out, so you can collect all the profits, etc.
I mean most of this can be done for free, since you know, you have students that can do most of this under an "Internship".

Biggest problem with that model is you severely limit the number of eyeballs on the conference. As it is, VT-FSU drew the most viewers for a game on a cable network in years, generating a ton of buzz around our program. That wouldn't have happened if we had a walled garden for only the people that went out of their way to subscribe to an ACC-specific package.
The deal with ESPN is good because it gives us a national audience. The deal with ESPN is bad because it's worth much less than our fellow conferences'. That said, I believe that this trend of media megadeals is nearing an end.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You are still going to need ESPN. There would still need to be a synergenic relationship there, and revenue splitting on certain games.
If you add an authentication area to the app and let people watch those for free is they have a cable service. Problem solved.
You still get people watching on actual TV, and you also have people watching online.
What crushes the current model we are in, is that there is no traditional TV aspect to our channel. You don't get the nonconsumers of the internet streaming.
Edit
I will add however that the value of traditional TV is depreciating. As mobility is currently the marketing and consuming king, more and more of the younger crowd use this form of consumption, and as the older crowd starts to die off eventually traditional TV will as well. Traditional TV will still be around, but its purpose will be very different.
The sooner you get into the App market, the more market share you will have before things completely flip over. BIG10 has already done this.

It's pointless to speculate on it anyway, as we've signed over all of our media rights through summer of 2036 anyway. We won't be able to create a subscription service before then, because we won't own the streaming rights before then, and there's really nothing that can be done.
Thanks, Swofford.

The next major chip to fall is to see which "Alexa" services win out, and which way these networks side. There might be some opportunity there, as they will be the largest marketing tools available in the near future.

Nebraska still on there is a little surprising to me. Obviously the Big10 tv deals contribute but they have been baaadd for a while. I really hope Frost can turn it around for them

Being good or bad has only a small part in revenue for most teams. Look at the list it's mostly teams who have been around a long time, play in conferences with crazy tv deals and have some historical relevance their fans can hang onto.

Apparently you can go to Raising Canes anywhere there, they are building them in small ass little towns all over. Meanwhile here in Florida not a single damn one!

Zaxbys is trash compared to Canes. They have too many things on their menu to be great at any of 5em and they don't have Canes sauce. The only thing that helps is having a PDQ here.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Hot take: Canes is overrated. It's average chicken, and while the sauce is good, I am not in third grade and like flavor options. Would it be so hard to have BBQ, Honey mustard, etc? I am still stunned by Canes success. I get the do one thing well model, but they aren't head and shoulders above the rest.

I thought your click bait title was a joke. At the very least you could actually post where the HOKIES ranked....
unranked... cue HokieFireman
I'm going to be optomistic and say they just don't have the data to see the successful results of our Drive for 25 campaign yet. /s

Well that's one way to guarantee nobody watches the ACC Championship Game. And a really good way to inflate losses for your more powerful teams

ACC - 1
Independent - 1
SEC - 10
B1G - 7

Big XII - 3
now this, this is a clickbaity headline. Well done GGC

I wonder what percentage of Oregon's is Phil Knight...
Wow Texas Tech and Iowa higher than VT, Miami and Clemson.
Because TV deals is where money comes from now. And the ACC failed.
I get the feeling that the TV money is about to drop a bit for everyone, as we transition from traditional cable into the future of streaming services.
So we missed the boom and we're gonna be just in time for the bust
Yep, that's pretty much how I see it
Clearly, the losses from the ECU game knocked VT off the list.
Too soon?
I spent 5 minutes searching for the link in the article to actually find out where the Hokies rank - where do we rank?

And they still slam 80-90k people in there every Saturday. That is one incredibly passionate fanbase.
What else is there to do in Nebraska?
hump corn?

Apparently you can go to Raising Canes anywhere there, they are building them in small ass little towns all over. Meanwhile here in Florida not a single damn one!
Just go to Zaxby's!
I mean this in the nicest way.
Zaxbys is trash compared to Canes. They have too many things on their menu to be great at any of 5em and they don't have Canes sauce. The only thing that helps is having a PDQ here.
Zax sauce tastes like vinegar and shoe soles

Also Canes has honey Mustard.
Bless your heart...
Go to PDQ. Far better tenders then Zaxby's or Canes. And if you want to switch it up get yourself one of these. Its heaven on a bun.
That's where I go now.
that's what I am talking about! That looks awesome! Canes can keep their floured chicken and soggy fries
You wanna compare crinkle cut think fries to PDQ shoestring ones?
Nah I will just let you think about it
How is Clemson not on the list?
Somewhere!
The other thing I notice are some of the bigger Under Armor and Adidas schools. Should we rehash this conversation again?
No.
Thanks Swoffard for the crappy ACC TV deal.
