The Packers-Bears game shows us a few things:
Great QBs can win games on one leg - Aaron Rogers.
Decent QBs won't lose the game for you, but they won't win it either - Trubisky.
Terrible QBs will dig the hole deeper with terrible fumbles and interceptions - Kizer.
Aaron Rodgers put on an absolutely amazing performance, but that last scoring drive was as lucky as it was great. He threw a pick straight into Kyle Fuller's numbers and he just dropped it, and the actual touchdown was 10% Rodgers and 90% Randall Cobb going 70 after the catch to the house through traffic.
The potential pick only happened because Devante Adams was knocked flat by another CB on the crossing route. On the TD it looked like Cobb was guinely surprised at all the open space in front of him after he caught it.
Agreed, Rogers didn't win it by himself, but it's weird how great QBs like Rogers put the ball in the right person's hands at the end of games (not every game, but more often than other QBs do it, which sets the greats apart from the rest)
2nd thing learned:
Phenomenal players like Khalil Mack are worth the money.
And the Raiders are gonna miss him dearly.
I am honestly glad we traded him for three reasons:
1. It would have been cap hell because we already overpaid for an average qb thanks to the previous regime
2. Gruden obviously realizes we are more than one good player away from having a quality D and being able to compete so he is building for the future
3. To add to that McKenzie has had a pretty poor drafting record the last few season so our depth needs some serious work so extra draft picks are needed
For all the media has been crucifying Gruden for the trade:
A) He isn't the GM.
B) Rumor has it enough cash is tied up in the Vegas move they couldn't pay the demanded signing bonus.
C) They need a lot of help.
D) Do you really want to give in to a prima donna? Even if he is really good.
If anything this week showed that the preseason really is that important. so many teams just looked completely off this week after resting top players.
Yeah, teams don't have that cohesion yet, but I'd rather be rusty than have unnecessary injuries from meaningless games

These guys have tons of talent, they score points, and they always find a way to lose just enough games to miss the playoffs.
Sam "Wouldn't Want it Any Other Way" Darnold is picking up right where he left off.
I'd say he settled in nicely afterwards. Stafford is having the game you'd have expected from the youngest QB in NFL history making his first start on the road, though.
Yeah, it really was a backwards Darnold performance. Make the boneheaded awful play first, then play great and live up to the hype.
Joins Favre and Winston as QBs who started their careers with pick sixes.
BUT Darnold throws a couple of good TDs and leads them to 48 points and a big win.

Tyrod's numbers would have been much better if his receivers could hold onto the ball. I watched Njoku and some of the others drop pass after pass that hit them in the hands.
Rams were rusty, but they got it together in the second half, offense looks like it will keep chugging (if they stay healthy), and watch out for that defense.
If you're into fantasy, pickup that Raiders TE - Jared Cook, he'll win games for you if they keep using him that way the rest of the year

Well he's right. Tyrod needs to push himself to take more risks throwing the ball downfield. Today, they could have won against the Saints if their kicker made a damn FG but it was yet another Tyrod performance well into the 2nd half where he's thrown for low yardage. I'm not sure he even broke 100 yards until the 3rd quarter (which is pretty routine for him as a starter). When the Saints went ahead late, Cleveland was forced to throw down field and you saw Tyrod connect on some big throws and get those numbers up. They need to do that all game he wants to remain a starter. Kicker woes aside, you can't win many games if your offense is barely putting up enough yardage to survive.
Tyrod's strength is he doesn't turn the ball over but its also a weakness in the sense that he won't throw the ball unless its absolutely certain it can be a catch. He's got to put himself out there, throw it into some tight spots, and just trust that it'll work out. To use a cliche, instead of playing not to lose, he needs to play to win.
Yup, he's got to start letting it fly. His problem is that he's as far as you can get from a gunslinger and he's not going to change at this point in his career. Can he trust his receivers? Doubtful. And now Gordon is gone so Landry is his only reliable target. And I don't know if it's only him, or also his OC calling the plays, and the general game plan to limit turnovers with him. Can only hope his leadership keeps him back there and they get a few wins.
But yeah, start throwing that ball early and often Tyrod!
I have to admit that I did not see the Browns-Saints game, nor did I know any more than the end result of the game while I was writing earlier.
Now I've learned that the Browns were actually leading 12-3 going into the 4th quarter, so I understand the protective play calling and passing by the OC and Tyrod, and then they opened it up when they had to in the 4th.
I'd still like Tyrod to open it up more if he can, but he's put them in position to win 2 games so I can't really fault him for either loss.
He also corrected his accuracy issues from last week, which was largely due to the monsoon and lack of in game timing with receivers but still he addressed an area where he needed to improve from week 1. I agree he could benefit from a little more risk taking but is also important to remember that the Steelers and Saints were probably preseason expected losses. Both teams have a long established and elite QB and were expected to be better than they've been so far. If they trust the process and Tyrod I think they will start to win some games, but it's always tough when a fan base has a #1 pick QB behind their current starter and they are anxious to see what he can do.
I agree, Tyrod and the offensive coordinators are making the decisions they are making for a reason. He made some clutch plays this week and put them in a position to win again against a very good team. He threw an interception, they missed some important kicks, and the defense got beaten by a great quarterback with the game on the line. Keeping Tyrod out there making the decisions that he's making is the right thing for the Browns to do. They're going to win some games.
Major understatement. 2 XPA and a 44 yarder to tie it after covering 40 yards in the last 44 seconds. All of this while kicking in a damn dome! Kid is screwed when the winds start swirling off lake Erie. Todd Haley needs to get his personnel figured out, far too many plays were duds yesterday and the Browns played behind the chains a lot as a result of busted/failed plays.

Yep. 2 bad plays on defense cost us the game, and we still woke up and roared back in the 2nd half which was good to see. Once the cavalry gets here (Wentz and Alshon) the O is gonna be humming in no time.
Also, the Buccaneers may actually be a good team this year. They're finally utilizing their offensive weapons correctly.

I mean at one point the offense was missing Wentz, Jeffrey, Peters, Ajayi, and Wallace. QB1, RB1, WR1, WR3, and LT1... Not many teams are going to even compete with those kinds of pieces missing, so its good to see that, assuming Wentz and Jeffrey come back this week, they were able to go 1-1 in their absence. As for the Bucs, I just get the feeling they'll do something stupid like force Jameis back into the starter role when his suspension is up, ruining chemistry, and this hot start will die off. Well, that and you can never really ever trust Fitzpatrick over the long haul. Fitzmagic is fleeting.

Ideally the Eagles would have had an early bye and integrated Wentz back in, and ideally Jeffery would be healthy too. Colts aren't a bad team to use to get back into rhythm either. Lots of short, quick throws.

As backups go, I don't think it's a "hot take" to consider Foles one of the better #2s in the league. His playoff run is proof of that.
But 99% if the fan base know Wentz has the skills to be the best QB in the league when the old guard hangs up their cleats.
Just because we wanted a kings ransom in trade for Foles doesn't make us delusional, just that the team preferred to keep him. But keep hammering that point...it just makes us smile thinking of Foles teabagging the Vikings D and Belichick and Brady.
I think there were valid arguments on both sides of this one, but given the uncertainty surrounding Wentz's return date and what Nick had just shown us in the postseason, I don't fault the Eagles for keeping him around. Of course Foles is always going to be more valuable to the Eagles when Wentz is coming off ACL surgery. He's a high-end NFL backup with an inconsistent track record and a wide range of variance in his performance, and is more than serviceable for a few games. I just happen to think it's dumb to think that the Cardinals or Jets would rather have Foles than Rosen or Darnold respectively.

Since I'm sure a lot of you guys watched the Browns/Saints game,
First off, yea that kicker lost them the game, there's no way he doesn't get cut right?
Tyrod seemed to struggle in the first half, but the play calling seemed really conservative to me, the kept running on first and second down, getting 1-2 yards, and the pass protection wasn't great. I guess I'm kinda surprised, he's gotten labeled as a game manager after watching him in college and he can for sure make plays like in the last two drives of this game and we know he has an arm. A lot of people two/three year ago were saying that Tyrod had the best deep ball in the NFL, but Haley and the Bills OC from last year seem to call super conservative dink and dunk pass plays with him. Or is Tyrod just missing reads? I'm not really sure anymore
It's a little of both. The offenses he's been in seem to call a lot of conservative stuff. Lots of runs, some screen passes, and then toss in a deep ball every now and then. But Tyrod himself misses reads or won't throw it to those reads. If you dig around the heavy analytic sites or listen to some broadcasters that really put in the work, they all say that Tyrod leaves a lot of throws on the field that he should make but doesn't, especially intermediate routes and working the middle of the field. He's always taking the safe throw. If he wants to take that next step beyond competent starter/high end back up, he's gotta start making those throws.
I'm really rooting for him to do it because its not like he has anything to lose right now. Baker will be the starter as late as next year for sure. Unless Tyrod wows everyone in the coming weeks, Baker will be the starter sooner than that. So you might as well let it all hang out and see what happens. Worst case scenario is you're a quality backup somewhere (not a bad paycheck), which is to say he's already proven what his floor is so he should go out there and try to raise his ceiling.
I think the Browns fans frustration is the defense has been amazing at generating turnovers, the offense is not generating enough points with all they are being given. Browns are like +6 in TOs in the first two games. I am not so sure the lack of production is all on Tyrod though.
I watched the game yesterday as well and I will say the Browns O-line leaves a lot to be desired. The Saints were able to get sacks and pressure rushing 3 men far too often. The run game was also unimpressive as Carlos Hyde looked slow and seemed content to just pound it up the gut for 2 yards rather than looking for cutback lanes. I would like to see Chubb get more carries as he seems to have the vision and the size to make something out of the underwhelming run blocking. I also thought the play calling was conservative, with screens and RB pitches and awful end-arounds/jet sweeps.
Tyrod needs to get the ball downfield more. Tyrod has lood great last two weeks when the Browns were playing from behind late in the game and had to push it. The WRs for the Browns have to get better, far too many drops yesterday. Also with Josh Gordon screwing up again, Higgins or Callaway have to step up and become a deep threat, Jarvis Landry isn't going to stretch the field.

This is a good assessment. A lot of people in Tyrod's court will flaunt the low interception rate statistic. That's fine, but the reason Brady, Rodgers, Brees, and Luck throw a few interceptions is that they sometimes go for the kill shot by squeezing the ball in a tiny window. That speaks to their confidence. Tyrod needs to be a little more of a gunslinger to catch somebody's eye.
I'd rather have a dude that screws up sometimes cooking me a filet, than always handing me a perfect peanut butter sandwich.

All of these QBs rode the bench for at least two years, and these are their first three years as starters, plus their career stats. Tyrod has some extra rushing yards and TDs not accounted for here, and he's been sacked more than others, but Rodgers who also runs a little bit also had more sacks than the other two. And of course, some of these teams may have had better o-lines, better skill players, better coaches, whatever, but that doesn't matter in the end.
Anyway, Tyrod's numbers are decent but they are significantly less in yardage, TDs, and INTs, which leads me to believe that INTs will be forgiven if the QB is getting the ball to the right guy, which ultimately leads to higher yardage and more TDs. Tyrod is good, but he has to throw it around more to become great. If you look at Rivers' numbers, he made a big jump in his 3rd year as a starter, so if Tyrod wants to do it, now's the time.

Looking at some BIlls highlights, Tremaine probably missed some gaps and assignments on Melvin Gordon, but hopefully he'll learn from mistakes and lead that defense well in the future

Kendall Fuller missed an easy sack on Big Ben yesterday that went for a big gain, too. Both secondaries got torched repeatedly in that game.
Terrell got abused so much yesterday. I had Mahomes as my fantasy QB and I felt so conflicted. I love those 6 TDs but stop picking on my boy like that!

They are an entire competent front office and coaching staff from having a competitive team. For once in about 30 years, I really like the personnel package. But the D, that is loaded with talent, couldn't even get lined up yesterday... The Colts were huddling on every play, and still they couldn't get lined up.
The OL is hot garbage, and not from a talent perspective. They constantly miss assignments, they rarely block to the second level, I haven't seen a Redskins OL pass protect well in maybe 20 years.
They need a lot more than a vertical threat.

Tyrod leads the Browns in the Thursday night game hosting the Jets - expecting this to be the 1st Browns win in about 635 days, and their 3rd win in about 1,073 days
I'm thinkin if tyrod doesn't score and the browns go into half time down 2-3 touchdowns against Sam Darnold, the tyrod era in Cleveland may be over.
Yeeep. Baker will be in at some point. I hate it for him. What the hell is he supposed to do in this offense? I know he missed a few throws but holy shit.
Watching this is so painful. Tyrod has missed a few throws but honestly he has had almost no time to do anything. They've left unblocked rushers going free at him multiple times.
Afraid to say Tyrod is done. At times it almost looks like they are running terrible offensive calls on purpose to get the "rookie QB so give me another year" narrative for the coaches. And Hue Jackson sucks big time.
But that miss in the throw to Calloway can't happen if you want to start in the NFL
Missing one deep throw, which Tyrod is statistically good at, won't doom him, but I agree the play calling at times seems ultra conservative. It'll be something to watch if they put Baker in and start running an exciting wide open offense.
I hate it for Tyrod and I've seen the shit he has been saddled with at Buffalo and now here. I see the pressure the Offensive line is allowing. But Tyrod isn't making the easy throws. I hate this.
Getting tired of listening to Joe Buck and Troy Aikman...I realize Tyrod is not making some plays, but his line is terrible. Bring in the rookie and let him get throttled!
I wish the Clowns had lost that fumble.

Damn I feel for Tyrod . He's missed some easy throws and is hesitating but damn that o line wasn't blocking either .
When I imagined Tyrods career, I think the Bills and the Browns are the last two teams I wanted him to go. They have not set him up for success with awful O-Lines and at best 1 NFL starting quality receiver on each team. Hopefully he gets a fair shake and gets traded to a team with the talent around him to allow him to thrive

Baker's slinging it. I know the comparison has been made five billion times, but he looks so much like Favre back there.
Honestly, everyone knows that Tyrod is a natural leader and an incredibly hard worker, but he just has not played well and it is painful to watch sometimes. Had the roles been flipped and Tyrod was behind a starter who played this poorly for 2.5 games, we all would have been clamoring for him to come in. Things are just not working for Tyrod in Cleveland.
Look. I know we all love Tyrod but he's looked like this with two teams now. At some point you have to admit it's not all crummy circumstances, bad linemen, or bad play calling. Some of this is on him. He has limitations as a QB. Like I said in some other treads here, he just doesn't put the ball in play enough, too often taking the safe, conservative route. Some times it works, plenty of other times the offense stalls out or just never gets going at all (like tonight). Baker is in now, the offensive line is the same and the play calling is largely the same. The difference? Baker don't give AF and is just slinging it. And now the Browns offense is showing signs of life. It sucks but it is what it is. It's the NFL. If you don't produce, you're out.
Tyrod is well respected. He works hard. He gets plenty of love from players, coaches, and media (seriously. They are far kinder to him than other QBs with similar numbers. Think of all the years Alex Smith was treated like dogshit despite winning games). What I'm saying is Tyrod will be fine. It's just that if he wants to lock down a starting job, he's got to improve.
I dont think he will get another opportunity to start in the NFL unfortunately, unless someone gets hurt..
Not out of the gate. No one is gonna sign him and hand him the reigns. He'll either be brought in as a back up or in another situation like Buffalo was where they were in transition and just looking for anyone to give them something. Right now, he's gonna be a Josh McCown/Ryan Fitzpatrick/ type of QB. A very solid back up that can win you games. Like all those guys, they all floated around the league long enough to where they eventually found themselves with a chance to be a starter again. He just needs to work on his game and be ready when that time comes.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Tyrod is too safe and doesn't throw his receivers open, by the time they break wide open he is pressured. Gotta anticipate things. He is a backup qb any team should want and that is ok.
Tyrod missing easy throws and has more rushing than passing yards. He also has no time to throw in a historically bad organization...with a first overall pick behind him. He's done.
Doesn't help when that first overall pick throws for 200 yds in just over one half and leads the Browns to their first win in over a year. The team looked totally different with Mayfield in there....Tyrod is done as the starter.
Tyrod isn't seeing the field the rest of this year. Not a chance
Until the O-line goes back to playing like it did in the first half and Mayfield gets broken.
Tyrod did his career no favors last night in NFL "prime time." I want him to succeed, but as a QB who has been in the league as long as he has, he must not be scared of the throws he had open to him.

Doesn't matter who led the second half charge, the team did it and Tyrod should be happy too because he's shown good leadership and work ethic that has helped - and will continue to help - the team and Mayfield.
Doubtful that Mayfield can play that well for 13 games with teams watching his tape, planning for him, etc, so I wouldn't count Tyrod out for the rest of the year, but Mayfield will start and they'll ride his arm until he gets hurt or has some bad outings.
I bet Tyrod keeps working hard and stays prepared for when he's needed, and I hope he starts slinging it when he gets his chance again:)
Let it be said that Tyrod could have led the team from behind in a similar fashion, like he did in week one. Oh, and week two, also. His stats were really bad, and he missed some throws, but he had a couple of throws that could have been caught, like the interference no-call in the endzone on Callaway on the first drive.
Some Browns fans here have speculated Tyrod was playing with a concussion after the second series. He took an uncalled helmet-to-helmet and really struggled after that.

Such a crappy broadcast but Buck and Aikman last night, I had to mute it multiple times. I have watched countless hours of football and have NEVER seen a starting QB go down and proceed to give NO injury update on Tyrod for the rest of the game besides a brief pan of him walking to the locker room. They then proceeded to have their head so far up Mayfield's butt they couldn't even think straight.
Even before Tyrod went down, all they could do was have a suckfest for Mayfield.
Joe Buck has improved slightly over his career, but the only PBP guy I can unequivocally say he's better than is Dick Stockton, who's 385 years old and should have retired at the turn of the century. Joe doesn't have that excuse, and he and Troy's biases show through on a weekly basis.
Kevin Burkhardt is the best play by play guy at Fox.

Mayfield was the #1 overall pick in the draft that pretty much everyone outside of Tyrod fans has been clamoring to see this year, especially with D'Arnold and Mahomes tearing it up. Very, very few turned in to see how Tyrod could handle the team, and they were playing to their audience.
This. I'm not really sure what most people expect when the first overall pick comes in in-relief, tears it up and leads this team to there first win in forever. No one in Cleveland even remembers who Tyrod Taylor is now, and he played some pretty forgettable football up there in the first two games. Is what it is, but is not surprising at all.

The line was horrible last night for Tyrod, it was like they were playing to get him injured. There was an unblocked defender in his face almost every drop back, and they didn't even try to get the run game going just letting him take a beating after a beating.
Terrell Edmunds got an interception for the Steelers. I'll take this as a sign that this is going to be a better week for Tech.

2 INTs and 2 fumbles lost which gave Oakland very short field and 14 points, plus one of his picks was a pick 6. Baker still looked good getting the ball down the field and extending plays with his legs.
Terrell just recovered a fumble against the Ravens!
Kendall Fuller having a rough game, didn't realize he was starting on the outside for KC instead of slot like he was on the skins. On the same drive go burnt deep, followed by overrunning a run to his side and ended getting blocked fairly easy for touchdown by the Denver RB.
I was slightly disturbed by the KC fan who looked like Andy Reid mated with Clifford the Big Red Dog...

Poor Pat Mahomes. Kid is unreal, but has never had a defense in college or the pros. When was the last time an NFL team has the league-best offense and league-worst defense?
