HokieBen's let's take a look at the positive side

First Off - I don't think I have ever heard more bias announcers call a game.

We have an incredibly young team, most of which has 2.5-4.5 years left (the redshirts). It's good to face some adversity early in their careers so they can grow from it. This is not a playoff team and if anyone thought we were really the #11 best team in the country I got a bridge in Brooklyn for sale. Hopefully, a loss like this will really wake us up. I would pick a loss to ODU over a loss to Notre Dame or Duke.

We are still 1-0 in the ACC, we are still very young, and I still trust Fuente/Foster.

How was ODUs QB not the starting QB all year? He looked way better than Deondre Francois.

I'm not some delusional fan, I am very upset, and my wife told me to stop being so "butthurt". If you think I am an idiot or want to downvote me that's fine. I just want to talk anyone off the "ledge" metaphorically.

We lost to FUCKING DAMN ODU!!! /end thread

I'm with you in the aspect of "this sucks a big one" losing to ODU , in football nonetheless. But I watched the game today during breaks of removing massive tree debris off my fence and porch , placing temporary roof protection (tarps) on my house (DO NOT FEEL SORRY FOR ME I WAS A LUCKY ONE) and helping to line up water and gas for those that were screwed by Florence and lost everything . Woe is me isn't the angle I'm playing but rather the angle of "life happens , we may get our ass kicked , but keep going." Hokies are gonna fix it . Bouncing back is what we do. Beat Dook!

Well said. A little bit of humble pie will be good for these young guys. And remember, the rubber band always snaps back. You can bet VT will show up next week. The public will be on Duke...

[Private] HokieBen2010 I hear Brooklyn is a happening place... Tell me more

[Private] HokieBen2010 I want to Google the bridge before I commit to anything big. I haven't bought a bridge before, so I'd probably need some time to think about it. I'm pretty sure if I bought a bridge without talking to my wife she'd fucking KILL me. Also, we're talking Brooklyn, NY; like the borough, or is this some other Brooklyn?

Heck, this sounds great. Shall we start a bidding war?

"Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

We are young and will get better but our talent level is far better than ODU young or old so it should have been an easy win.

The last time a team lost as a 25+ point favorite? Oklahoma lost to Iowa St. 38-31 as a 29 point favorite in 2017. OU went on to go to the Rose Bowl and Baker Mayfield won the Heisman.

We don't have to let one game define our season.

Doesn't matter if WE do or don't. The rest of creation will, no matter what we do.

We lost to JMU then won the ACC

GOOD stat thank you lozo

Sooo.....QP will win the Heisman?

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

while redshirting, no less

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Yeah but Iowa St is a Power 5 school that has a track record of beating ranked teams from time to time (especially at home). We lost to team fresh out of the FCS that was 0-3 and has looked terrible. One game might not define a season but these are like two very different things.

track record had to start somewhere. maybe ODUs the next Iowa st. (this is the thinking positive thread right?)

Iowa State is a P5 Football program that won 5 conference games and finished 8-5 that year.

They also notched wins again TCU (Ranked Number 4), Memphis (number 19, liberty bowl)

Their losses are all fairly respectable: Iowa (in OT), Texas, WVU, OKST (12), and KSTATE

I'd be hard pressed to relate this to our loss

I don't know that we're a 2010 caliber team, but I don't think we're a 3-8 caliber team either. This showed us where the floor is after what turned out to be a layup against a dumpster fire and rolling over a bad FCS team, but there's still time for us to find this year's ceiling too.

Spoiler: yes, it's the roof

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

We were flying in the clouds after the FSU beatdown, this is more of the type of season we were looking at preseason. Nobody wants the inexplicable loss showing up, but a 7-6/8-5 team probably has one on their resume.

If we look at this game in a vacuum, it's just a whole Lotta WTF

Hopefully now the coaches play to win rather than coaching not to lose. Everything was pretty miserable today (except for Peoples' effort). This was a horrible loss but it should help reveal character. We'll see who plays their butts off next week in a bounce back game.

IMO the highlight was ODU running it up at the end. I had to laugh when their bowling ball RB went the distance.

Willis was also encouraging. I thought he tried to create some things while JJ is always a game manager. And it will be interesting to see if Hooker gets any series next weekend.

The ACC is bad this year with the coastal being total crap, so we've still got a chance.

Edit: And today marks 5047 days of VT holding the Commonwealth Cup.

Hate to break it, but the character was already revealed during the game.

Character isn't about getting knocked down.

It's about getting back up.

Step 1 get knocked down, Step 2 ... Step 3 get back up

Sadly if you can't beat ODU then You can't beat any other team, we will probably lose the rest of our games

And if you can't score a point in regulation against 2014 Wake Forest then you surely can't beat UVA the very next week.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

And if you can't beat JMU then you can't win the ACC

and if you cant beat FSU 13 times in a row surely you cant beat them ever?

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

There's literally no positive to losing to odu. Doesn't matter how young your team is. You shouldn't have to lose to ODU to learn how to 'face adversity' and you sure as hell don't need to be a playoff team to beat ODU.

Also I have no idea why you would rather lose to ODU than Duke or notre dame but each to their own. I'd rather not lose to a basically fcs level team.

the positive is the Offense did show up. the Offense led the game for 3 quarters, matching the score and even scoring the estimated total points we thought they would.

The hard part is the defense flat out sucked.....bad....

I'm not sure how you can say the offense showed up. We scored 35 on a team we should have scored 77 on, seeing as our starters were in all game. ODU is NOT good, and 80% of their players would likely not even earn a walkon spot at Tech. The QB play from JJ was the worst I can recall since I started following VT in 97.

This was not putting up 35 on ND. It was fucking ODU, and the offense was garbage today.

^___This, so much this. Jpoole9999, please look at the scores and the names of the teams that ODU played before today and tell me with a straight face that VT's Offense did their jobs on Saturday.

You are factually correct that our offense scored 35 points on Saturday against ODU......It's just 20 points fewer than what Liberty scored against ODU in week one of this season.

It goes without saying, but VT should be able to score more points than Liberty when both schools played against a common opponent.

Go Hokies!

It's hard for the offense to score more than 35 when they don't have the ball.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

My wife is a Duke fan and they are ACC, and my Brother in law is a huge Notre Dame fan and we are 1-0 all time against them.

We saw someone outplay our starting quarterback... And that someone was on the same team as our starting quarterback

Go Hokies!

ODUs QB made at least 4 or 5 amazing throws when our DBs were stride for stride with the receiver. We could have used safety help on some of them, but he played the game of his life. We also lost our composure on a handful of plays.

Lastly, Divine Deablo might be our team MVP

This is absolutely it. That guy looked like tom Brady in his prime out there. Never made a bad decision, pin-point accuracy, and took some vicious hits and just popped right back up. I hate that it happened against us, but he basically had an out of body experience.

We were short, literally, on the back end and it showed.

Seriously, why is this downvoted?

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

1998 Temple and 2010 JMU. This is nothing new.

Or losing your homecoming game to Miami of Ohio. Because we did that too.
People just need to suck it up and understand that every team shits the bed from time to time. How you respond is what matters in the end. We've not seen the response yet.

Hell, a top ranked Ohio state team shit the bed against some team a few years ago.

Thanks for catching my mistake, deathrow. Was thinking about Akron while typing about the Miami loss. 1997 is the year in question.

We never lost to Akron, what game are you referencing?

Rip his freaking head off!

HokieBen, this is out of left field but do you go by 'Blathouse'? If so, we partied...a lot. If not, this is awkward.

Yeah, well Balthouse but I think we are on the right track

At least we have our health? I don't know if there's much upside other than it's an OOC loss.

VPI '10

Fantastic response to a bad performance.

How you react to what happens is important.

Fuente gets it.

Fuente couldn't of handled that any better in my opinion

Having then team ready to play, making in-game adjustments, those would have been handling things better

On the bright side, Tiger's up by three. Comebacks can happen.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

You, my man, have the only comment on here tonight I think I really enjoyed reading. Here's to lazy Sunday and watching that unfold!

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

So on a lesser note any word on what Jackson's injury is or the extent of time he may miss?

I like what I'm seeing in how some players are responding to this on Twitter. I don't think we'll see today's team next week.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

embed some examples? I'm curious as to how the respond to this game

I figured the positive news would be that after today it looks like we might have a home game in December against ECU!! /s

Positive take: Peoples is pretty damn good when fully healthy. If the rest of the team played with half of the effort and determination that he displayed then we win going away.

There is no bright side. This was a bad bad bad loss and will prevent people like me that live far away from donating to the Hokie Club. It will hurt us in recruiting for years to come

This is the largest upset by FPI in the 14 years of that metrics existence. I feel bad and the team should feel bad because they sucked. And honestly Fuente and Foster need to look in the mirror because they basically got paid for 2 weeks with no work done

As a Hokie fan I am devastated. There are really no silver linings here--this one was a total disaster that is going to hurt us for years.

But as a college football fan, you have to appreciate the magic of the upset... I just wish it wasn't us.

There's a formula to the upset!

I am still drunk. That is the only positive thing to come from yesterday's depression binge drinking.

Went Here Friday afternoon. Didn't realize I would be going back vicariously with the team Saturday afternoon, too.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

One potential bright side: Fuente now really understands the curse of the orange, and burns all the orange jerseys and pants.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Now this is how to find a silver lining.

Kids, listen to this man!

We wore white pants though

Yes, this is true, but my hope is that Fuente understands that it was the orange that led to this, and burns not only the shirts, but also any pants that may have been ordered as well. Maybe I should have worded it that way.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

could not be more right. orange jerseys must go.

I know there are legit rebuttals to this, but this is just me trying to find some peace:

In 2016 ODU was a 10 win team and won a bowl game. Since reinstating their football program in 2009, they are 73-37. They are a team we should beat 10 out of 10 times, but for those acting like we lost to South Central Louisiana State University, it really isn't.
