It seems that VT getting back into the Top 25 after the game that shall not be mentioned means that there is some respect (or some desire for a top 25 matchup) for this team.
What do the rankings of both teams with respect to respect (I tried no to do that) after this game mean based on results?
Here's my take.
- Big Notre Dame Win (+2TD). VT still in Top 25. Moderate Respect
- Notre Dame Win. VT still in the Top 25. Some Respect
- Big VT Win (+2TD). VT in Top 10. Notre Dame still Ranked. Massive Respect
- Big VT Win (+2TD). VT minor bump. Notre Dame dropped from Top 25. No Respect
- VT Win. VT minor bump. Notre Dame minor fall. Some Respect
I think these scenarios can go on forever and invite anyone interested to re-use the ones above or make up you own!
GO HOKIES.

Unfortunately, total TOP is the only thing that's going to get either team any respect after the final tick.
Honestly as much as we like to have a chip on our shoulder, the fact that we're ranked just 2 weeks after losing to an otherwise winless ODU is evidence to me that we get respect.
Agreed, I think the loss to ODU was grounds to keep us unranked until every other viable P5 team had at least 2 losses and we didn't, so the fact that so many voters think better of us is a pretty big compliment to me.
I think we're pretty respected. A lot of writers had us pretty well ranked prior to the beginning of the season.
I don't see any scenario where we are still ranked after a loss, even if it is close.
Also we are only ranked due to poll inertia from preseason rankings.
We were still ranked like 28 ffs after losing to ODU with only wins against a trash FSU team and W&M.
If we were evaluated objectively we would not be ranked right now.
