So ugh Quincy Patterson played last night

I found it surprising that he got some touches instead of Hooker. Was Willis hurt when he went in? I couldn't hear the TV at the bar I was watching the game at.

Do we think Hooker is going to transfer after this season?

Because without one of those, this is just speculation.

Willis was not hurt. They let QP play til he got a first then sent Willis back in. No idea why HH wasn't sent in, considering they just wanted to do some QB runs and handoffs.

My wife didn't know who he was when he went in, and then went totally nuts on Fuente when he took him out.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Anybody have it to post? I didn't catch his series and deleted the game off the DVR, it was gonna be too painful to wanna re-watch.

"...sticks and stones may break my bones but I'm gonna kick you repeatedly in the balls Gardoki!"

If you go to YouTube, type in "Hokietapes", it should be the first video to pop up.

Go to about 1:37:00 in (at 11 minutes left in the 3rd quarter) for his series.

Their personnel management reminds me of Lawson's (who I hear may transfer). You've got QP for 4 games "free". Why waste one of those for 3-4 plays? If you're going to play him, put a package for him and let him play them (couple of series during the game). They have HH for what they used him.

We put the K in Kwality

This. I was excited to see him but what a waste of a game appearance for him, IMO

The season is roughly half over, and QP still can play 3 games and keep his redshirt.. Thats totally different from burning a redshirt for a handful of plays like what was done with Lawson

Still, it's the same sort of headscratching decision that makes about as much sense as buying peanut butter from costco when you're allergic.

Why? He still keeps his redshirt. They only have 5/6 games left.

Because he only gets 4 games. What if both RW and HH get hurt next week, and JJ reinjures his leg shortly thereafter? Then we're probably going to have to burn the redshirt, and probably only because we sent him in for a handful of plays that could have been handled by HH just as easily.

Not a likely scenario, but after the off-season we had nothing would surprise me any more.

In the scenario that all our top 3 QBs are out for the season, I'll be glad that someone on the roster has game experience

Then he would have had to burn it anyway and we would be playing our 4th string QB.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

And he probably would redshirt next year unless he confirms that he should be the starter.

Not if we were down to 4 games left, or if another QB became healthy within 4 games, but I guess that point was lost in the shuffle.

Then QP plays. Thats a lot of what ifs.

Or maybe they let Caleb Farley take snaps because in this scenario, the sky has fallen.

If a car goes off the road in the midwest at high tide while you're paddleboarding on the lake...you can take this as deep as you want. Still a stupid hill to waste energy on.

If you're assuming disaster hits the QB room wouldn't you want Patterson to at least have some game experience, even if it's minimal?

They could always just run Wildcat if they're that terrified of burning QP's shirt. If everyone goes down and he has to play then that isn't really Fuente's fault.

Why not give HH those snaps? He needs the experience and development more than anyone since he IS the backup now.

uva - the taint of the ACC

Does it matter one way or the other?

Nope.

Because HH doesn't run the wildcat package anymore.

Every weekend...the goal is to go 1-0. QP playing a down to move the ball in a key situation makes sense. If he's the guy for the job, then put him in. We don't know who's going to be playing quarterback in 3 years...let alone three weeks.
The coaches coach...the players play...and the fans support and cheer. We can question the coaches, but come on...these guys are thinking things through.
Looking forward to seeing QP run one or two more plays in a few weeks again, if that's what we need to win!!!!!

If QP runs the option better that HH (which, based on our very limited sample size, I think he does), then we should use him here. He came in and got us a first down when we really, really, needed one. Not sure how that's a 'waste'. Given our struggling run game, I wanted to see more of QP, but I still don't think this game was a waste.

This makes no sense. Do you think there's four games left on the schedule where we should sacrifice a possession in order to get a true freshman experience? I don't see one game left where we can waste downs.,much less four of them.

In the post game interview Feunte mentioned that now that Hendon is the official backup they don't want to use him as a wild cat because he prepares during the week as the backup. He said the plan was to use QP in short down situations and as a big back runner.

I heard this too...sure are a lot of coaches on TKP lately. I trust Bud/Fu!

I've been thinking for a while now that HH is gone after this year. Last night really points in that direction. Regardless of what happens, all I can say is this staff had better have QP ready next year. If they still don't trust Willis completely, another sluggish start on offense with JJ back under center might create some serious frustration among the fan base. Something needs to be fixed on O, it is broken.

Whatchu talkin' bout Willis?

Agreed that the O needs to start moving the ball. Also hope QP will be ready to play ball full time soon. Not sure about the HH - Hope he keeps playing as a Hokie.

JP

I couldn't hear the TV at the bar I was watching the game at.

Lucky you.

Agreed. The announcers were terrible. The sound kept cutting out at our house. Other than the first series and the last series (and then UNCheat's kicker helping us out) this whole game was not an enjoyable experience.

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

As was, with what seems most ACC stadiums, shitty camera angles and poor transitions. Couple it with when we get the "B" and "C" teams doing the announcing, and you're better off just blasting music as the soundtrack.

Tu-rod did it Mikey! Tu-rod did it!

My response was please. Close the score to 3 points and give us the ball.

It wasn't even that they were biased, the commentary was just awful. The lowlight for me was when Hazelton got a big first down reception and the announcer said "that was the best route I've seen in college football this year." I mean go Hokies and all... but really?

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

At least they didn't slip into a fake JFK accent like the CBS Sports guys. But, they definitely made a comment about Ryan Wilson.

The announcers were awful, a lack of knowledge for both teams and just stupid dramatic commentary.

SO UGH BASELESS SPECULATION POSTS THIS MORNING.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Its a fair question to ask after QP looked like he jumped him. Though I think Fuente shut down the talk with his statement.

Now

How is this speculation? They are just questions. Fair ones at that.

Yeah we you say "do you think" that takes any form of speculation out of the equation

Hendon Hooker leaving? Based on him not playing in a series when Willis wasn't injured?

That's just idle speculation.

He asked. He didnt speculate. Even if the answer is a firm no or Idk that doesnt make it speculation.

He raised it as an issue, which is a form of speculation.

No it isnt. Speculation would be if he had formed some sort of theory or idea on the issue. He actually did nothing of the sort. In fact, we would be the speculating here, not him. Just simply bringing an issue to attention isnt speculation.

Nothing of the sort?

Speculation

1.the forming of a theory or conjecture without firm evidence.
"there has been widespread speculation that he plans to quit"

This thread is the very definition of speculation. The suggestion that HH might leave after this season is absolutely speculation.

Just because it's in the form of a question doesn't mean it's not speculation.

That's just your inference of his question.

But seeing as a whole day has passed and that is about the equivalent of a year on the internet, I've really lost interest. So sure, you are right and I was wrong.

it is true, that the definition of "to speculate" has multiple definitions, including to "review something casually without conclusion" but the comment used the term "BASELESS SPECULATION" which in context refers to an alternative definition of "to take to be true on the basis of insufficient evidence."

🦃 🦃 🦃

Speculation is now broadened to asking a question? Did OP edit or something? (those might be 2 baseless speculative thoughts...)

QP is a monster...just in time for Halloween.

QP got a first down on a drive that lead to a touchdown. We're halfway through the season with 3 more "free" game appearances. Although I'd like to see more of QP, I'll take a TD drive appearance given points were at a premium and we got the W by 3

I was happy to see him, the staff wanted to get some experience, and my assumption is they needed to talk something over with Willis. Herndon has game exp. Unless they are going to let him pass, no reason he needs to go in, no reason to get him hurt.

All I got from this game was holy hell QP is a big beast

Really hope HH sticks around. That 336 pipeline is an important one for recruiting.

Yes it is, all I kept thinking about last night as Tre Turner and all the other 336 boys were balling out in Keenan. Such a big slap in the face to UNC and it feels great.

And of course they are big pieces for us that would be at any of the other ACC schools that we beat out for them.

It was also sad to see Newsome and such a talented corner in Patrice Rene from NOVA on their roster. Rene battled hard with Hazelton and really held him in check even through that last drive. He would've been a great addition to DBU.

Fugazy

yep. Right now Episcopal is a pipeline out of state and that bugs me.

I feel like I've heard that many (most?) of Episcopal's players aren't originally from Virginia so they don't have the local ties of other VA recruits.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

It's mainly because almost all Episcopal kids aren't from VA, so they don't really have much, if any, relation to the state. Not sure where Rene is from originally but a lot of those kids are from Canada, so they want to play at northern schools like Michigan (Luiji Vilain) or PSU (Jonathan Sutherland).

I'd imagine that a 4 star guy with offers from Tenn, Oregon, Clemson, NC State, ND, Pitt, WVU etc. would entice some other programs.

I certainly haven't seen enough of him to know either way, but with the hype around QP it would be surprising if HH wasn't the backup going forward.

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

It was fun to see QP get absolutely mobbed on the sideline by teammates congratulating him after picking up the first down. That's gotta be a good sign of his status in the locker room.

That was my reaction also. As painful as this season has been to watch, we're on track to do what I thought we'd do or better. And I still have at least a little confidence in younger guys growing up. I just want to have a little more confidence in our offense than I do. I don't know enough to say if it's youthful lack of execution or if it's coaching. But last night was especially tough to watch. Glad to get the W.

This was totally my takeaway. QP getting love from the whole team after his very first collegiate first down series shows me that everyone's excited for him - more than that, that everyone's on his side. Willis seems to be getting much closer to the team now that he's QB1 (we had a couple shots of him celebrating with the guys), but I think that the whole "I have to do this on my own" mentality is probably still a very big thing he needs to overcome after his history at KU.

In this game specifically we saw him really start to lose his composure after a few bad throws - if he's thinking back to "Now I have to do this on my own" like he probably did at KU and not trusting his teammates, he's gonna get trapped in a downward spiral mid game and pull all of his passes (again, like we saw on saturday). Even his teammates comment on it at this point (think it was Grimsley that mentioned it yesterday), and Ryan himself has said that he needs to get out of his own head. The mental toughness / sports psychology aspect of it is probably what's going to be his main issue this season...he's got the ability to put a fantastic touch on the ball (and when he does, the passes are beautiful), but when he's tilted and thinking he has to do everything, he makes mistakes and the team feels it.

If he can get out of his own head and realize that he's got SO many great teammates that also want (and have the ability) to win, I think we could see an amazing QB. The losses at KU and overall losing mindset he probably had at KU are his main obstacle this season imo.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

QP is a battering ram.

He doesn't make a man miss, he makes a man miss him.

For all I know, he may actually be Chuck Norris.

How about the possibility that the staff anticipated that this was going to be another rout of UNC and "promised" Quincy some time in the game and put in some practice time with him under center. The game did not turn into the hoped for rout, but by putting QP in, they fulfilled their "promise" and built up trust in the young quarterback for the staff.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

That's possible but I don't think it's probable. I think what is far more likely is that they saw their first conference loss on the horizon and knew they could bully UNC with his size and strength.

Perhaps Fuente and company is looking at the schedule and already knows which remaining games they want to use him in. Maybe they put him in during garbage time against GT, BT, or UVA, to get him to 3 total appearances and save the 4th for an absolute emergency.

HH must be betting on himself to be able to compete. You got JJ with 2 (or 3 years left if he medical redshirts), a stud in QP behind him. If Willis rides the rest of this season out as QB1, it is going to be wide open next season.

I mean, Lawson already has one foot out the door, so assuming one of the others leaves it's an easy over.

I dunno, I think it's more like that he's the wildcat package QB for the time being, like Fuente said on the post-game.

Once Jackson is healthy I'd imagine Hooker rotates back to wildcat and Jackson + Willis take reps as #1/#2 QB (#1 tbd)

I think fuente just put QP in to get a 1st down and give Willis a series to get himself together .....at that point in the game we could not afford another stalled drive....everything fu does is calculated..... he was trying to win the game period. and thought we could catch them off guard w QP and keep the drive alive.

if he would have went 3 and out I think youd be speaking to a different tune. im glad it worked out. but hind sight is 20/20 on this one. the timing I thought was odd at best. I was glad to see it. but it was really out of nowhere. kinda like HH in the duke game. I hate that (and we aren't the only team that does it) we bring in a guy and run zone read 3 plays in a row and then he trots off. that may work once in a season. if you don't open the offense up and atleast show a threat that you trust him to throw the pill the D is going to shut that down every time you run it again now that its on film. I know it was only 3 snaps but HH against duke just sticks in my head. everyone on the field new what was coming and they shut it down.

I'm kinda surprised how much people took away about his size and running ability from a couple plays, put me in the minority but I wasn't impressed really. It was meh and mostly just curious that he was in there. He got us a first down and everything else wasn't really memorable to me and definitely nothing that tells me he can run RPOs or this offense better than Hooker which people speculating about to the point Hooker would transfer. This is coming from a big QP fan, in the off-season threads I mentioned several times that he would play this season, but it is TKP so lol

Fugazy

#1 he's a big dude
#2 he had no negative plays and picked up a first down

that's all I took from it. I think the people worried about Hooker failed to listen to the postgame / failed to realize that when Hooker was running wildcat he was the #3 QB. Now that Hooker is the #2 he reps the regular package and we can't risk injury to the #2 running them in wildcat anyway.

I would disagree on the use of QP as a wildcat as a straight up swap with HH. I read the comments about the post game so I'm familiar with the reasoning Fuente gave and I'm sure it's true. But HH was brought in because he was a true change of pace to JJ. JJ is slow and not quick so it makes sense. There were several designed runs for Willis and even when the plays broke down we saw his running ability not only in this game but others. JJ cant execute certain designed QB runs the way Willis can, so JJ's run calls are different. In this offense the QB will rack up a lot of rush yards if they have the skill set for it. To me they just wanted to have the threat of an actual passer (normally wildcat is run with a non QB athlete) and extra blocker (the RB) for essentially a power Logan Thomas formation to run plays out of. HH as wheels and is a true running threat, QP isn't that kind of burner but he's athletic and big so he'll be used a lot less except for relatively short yardage or power runs. HH and QP serve different purposes in that role and that's due to Willis' quickness and speed as a runner.

Fugazy

You can disagree with it but it was the coaches' decision not just an opinion

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

I wasn't disagreeing with the coaches using QP, I'm saying that they won't be used the same situation nor have the same play calls in their role so it's more than just Fuente using QB3 as the guy to not get the back up hurt. HH and QP have different skill sets athletically so it's not just a 1-for-1 swap. And Willis actually removes the need to have an explosive player come in at QB for a couple plays because is significantly quicker and faster than JJ and the coaches will use QP in different situations than they would have used HH when JJ was starting.

Fugazy

It's literally a direct swap on the depth chart.

QP is running the wildcat package, at least for the time being.

And of course the way QP executes the wildcat package, and the plays called, and the situations where he's put in the game will be a fair bit different from HH. They have different strengths, but they can both move the ball on the ground, which is what you need out of a wildcat QB.

If QP takes option snaps to gain experience, I have no issue. Never been a Division 1 head coach.

If HH takes snaps and disaster happens we're down to a true freshman backup. Season is in serious trouble. If QP gets hurt we still redshirt, it sucks but we've got years to get him ready. Im happy we've got a full QB room to fall back on

Maybe Fuente was just worried we would all giggle when the announcer says "Hooker takes it up the gut"

I would not put it past those announcers last night, especially after their "pitcher-catcher" comment about Willis and Hazleton.

Or the 4th and 8 conversion by Willis on the ground which led to a proclamation of "the stones on that play".

I have one observation to make about QP. He is a True Freshman QB who played a big part in his team's important TD drive. There was another true freshman QB at that game who could not say that........ QP showed that the game was not too big for him and that was worth spending one of his four freebies for CJF to see.

Lets GO!!!!

Yes, he gained confidence in himself and got a couple game speed snaps at Div 1 ball.

Coaches showed confidence in him , put him in at a crucial time, not garbage time.

Teammates ai confidence in him and they responded with the type of attention that is positive.

Willis was probably getting coached on the plan for the drive and how to handle clock, settle him down and focused and how they'd like the ball positioned.

I thought it was brilliant and nicely done.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I was driving and had to listen to the game on Sirius. It was the UNC feed. The announcers had absolutely no clue who QP is. You could practically hear them shuffling through papers trying to find anything to say about him. They finally came up with "he was recruited out of Illinois."

They'll go from not knowing a thing about him to having nightmares about him in about 3 years.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Here's hoping!

QP MUST WATCH: I stumbled on this the other day. If you haven't watched it, there is a 7 episode series from the 2017 Elite-11 on Youtube. Here is episode 1. https://youtu.be/MB1TnJz-Zwk . Great snapshot of QP. He starts as one of the last people to make the initial 25 (at #23 I believe) and works his way up to #11 to make the last group. Trent Dilfer is impressed with his ability to learn and make different reads/progressions. He says he could see him winning the Heisman not necessarily because of his physical attributes (which are amazing) but because of his smarts. He was clearly raw, mostly because of lack of experience, but also because his HS runs a funky offense. Great watch to see what is to come at QB for the Hokies.

There is no way we are going to have opportunities in 4 of the remaining 7-8 games this season to put him in the game to run an entire drive. If we couldn't get him in for a drive against William & Mary, it's unlikely to happen once at this point, much less 4 times. So spoiler: his 4 appearances are probably to be a couple snaps each. (and that's ok... without the rule change, he wouldn't have taken any snaps at all this season, so any snap is really just a bonus.) The fact we used one of those 4 bullets at UNC and it directly contributed to a TD drive in a game won by 3 points is awesome. It's unlikely his other 3 appearances will be as impactful.
