College Football Belt

Many of you are aware of the College Football Belt that's been discussed a few times around here. I didn't want to bump the old thread up, since it was created in 2011 and bumped up against last year. For those late to the party, the CF Belt is an award that some fans came up with to determine the best team on the field. They started with the 1971 Nebraska team, but later determined that the lineage still worked out if they traced it all the way back to the first college football game in 1869. Whoever beats the team currently holding the Belt becomes the new Belt holder.

Unfortunately, it looks like the website that tracks it is dead. It stopped being updated last year, and completely went down during the offseason. I think some folks on Reddit are trying to track it, but I'm having a heck of a time finding a clear list that is actually up-to-date.

At the end of 2016, the Belt actually resided with the actual CFP Champions at Clemson. They held on to it until Syracuse took it from them, and then Miami took it from them a week later. Then, Pitt managed to steal it in the final week of the season and went home since they weren't going bowling (courtesy of a Hokie goal line stand the week prior).

Therefore, Pitt brought the Belt to the 2018 season, but lost it to Penn State in week 2.
Penn State surrendered it to Ohio State in week 5.
Ohio State just gave it to Purdue in week 8.

So, Purdue is the current holder of the Belt. Next challenger is Michigan State.

With the structure of the Big Ten schedule, it's going to stay in that conference until bowl season.

Man I love the CFB belt. It's a shame the website died. It couldn't have been that hard to keep that geocities webpage afloat.

Sounds like an opportunity for TKP to generate some web traffic

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I did a little bit of Excelling this morning, and here's the probabilities of who will own the Belt leading into the Big Ten Conference Championship Game (based on ESPN's current matchup predictions [based on their FPI]):

Ohio State: 21.2%
Michigan: 18.8%
Iowa: 17.5%
Wisconsin: 10.2%
Michigan State: 7.7%
Purdue: 6.1%
Northwestern: 6.0%
Penn State: 5.0%
Indiana: 2.3%
Nebraska: 2.1%
Minnesota: 1.5%
Illinois: 0.8%
Maryland: 0.5%
Rutgers: 0.2%

If Michigan can finally take care of Ohio State, the Belt may very well end up with the actual CFP Champion again.

C'mooooon, Rutgers!!!!

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Looking over the schedules, the only scenario I see for Rutgers to get the Belt would be for Michigan State to beat Purdue this week, then beat Maryland, OSU, and Nebraska, but then lose to Rutgers in the final week.

That is the only scenario for Rutgers.

Interestingly (to somebody... maybe...), Purdue has a chance to win it back again in Week 13:

Michigan State would need to lose to Maryland in Week 10 (37.7% chance), Maryland would need to lose to Indiana in Week 11 (53.7%), and through some financial contract with the Devil, Indiana would need to upset Michigan (5.1% chance) in order for Purdue to have a 72.7% shot at winning it back from the Hoosiers.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

After skimming through that and doing some side-research of my own, we were 0-12 in Belt games before finally winning it in 2011 from GT, won two more games against UNC and UVA while holding the belt, and then lost to Clemson in the 2011 ACCCG, and since then have lost 2 more Belt games, to both Clemson and Miami in 2017, bringing our overall record with the Belt on the line to 3-15.

We may have been. I didn't look at every team's wins, just noticed when we played a team in the year they won the belt, so I am sure I missed one or two.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

It took 13 tries to win the belt? VT really can't win the big games huh

Whomever wrote that has too much time on their hands...good read, though

Michigan State is the current Belt holder. Next challenger is Maryland.

Ohio State is the newest holder of the Belt, having beaten Michigan State.

Next challenger is Maryland, again.

Didn't OSU just lose it to Purdue a few weeks ago?

That's the beauty of the Big Ten schedule.

Just like how Maryland played MSU last week, and plays OSU next week, so they get two chances at the Belt in three weeks.
