I feel like I should go back and watch what the defense did right for the Duke game. I don't know that we'll be holding anyone else to 14, but I also don't think a traditional offense will march up and down the field on us like Georgia Tech did either. ~28-35 points, sure, but not what we were just subjected to.

Our defense can keep us in games against a QB who can't consistently make deep throws under pressure. I'm worried about our front 7 against the run game of BC and Pitt, but if we can do enough to contain it, we'll have a shot. I like our chances against Miami the way they're wilting. UVA is anyone's guess.

Spot on. If we can bait the opposing offensive play caller into trying to beat us with low percentage passes, we stand a chance. It's actually shocking how often this can work because 1) playcallers tend to fall in love with exploiting "favorable" matchups and 2) the typical college QB sucks at completing deep passes even if the receiver has a step or five on the DB.
So while I think BC could come out and physical dominate us with the ground game, we should all be familiar with how much Loeffler loves using different formations to dictate matchups and try to exploit those. If Foster can entice Loeffler to try to beat us through the air because of some juicy matchups with our young CBs and LBs, I think we stand a far better chance.

I feel good about how poor Brown's been as a passer. We need to follow the same plan as last year and just go all out to stop Dillon, which will be a tall task, and force Brown to throw it 30-35 times.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
BC runs a different scheme and you can't just change your identity in a week. They might use designed QB runs but their offense is built around Dillon and they won't be able to install and execute a new package to the same degree. Also I believe Loeffler is far more likely to outsmart himself and stall a few drives than Paul Johnson. I certainly don't think we should be favored but personally I like our chances against BC better than I did against GT.

The implication in the post above is that we don't actually want to win the Coastal because we'll just get embarrassed by Clemson, which is an opinion I've seen multiple times on this site recently.
It is better to win the Coastal and lose to Clemson than to not win the Coastal at all.

To me, going out of your way to say it isn't fun to watch implies that you would rather it not happen in the first place. Or maybe I'm reading too much into this particular comment because of a bunch of other people who have said exactly that over the last couple weeks.

Unfortunately I agree. I don't think it's quite as bad as GT but they have a solid running game, Zaccheus is a savvy veteran WR up against our young DBs, and Perkins is mobile. I fear Zaccheus is going to eat us alive on short/intermediate passes and that's going to open up running lanes for Perkins.

It's amazing to me how much your run game can open up and how much more effective the read option and misdirection are when you have a true, credible run threat at QB.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I sadly agree. This season reminds me somewhat of 2015. Our starting QB goes down early, offense is up and down/inconsistent, and the d is just getting gashed left and right. We have four games left and need two for bowl eligibility. That 2015 team had leadership and dug deep to save the UVa streak, bowl streak, and win streak for Beamer. Unfortunately, I don't see the same passion with this team, and don't think they are going to dig that deep for Fuente. A lot is seriously in jeopardy.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That 2015 team played a little bit of defense. And when Brewer came back, we were a pretty decent squad. Though there are some similarities, to your point this team hasn't shown that it possess the leadership on the field (and I'm beginning to wonder about off the field) to inspire confidence in the same outcome.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I wouldn't knock their passion. They've hung in some games that were pretty tough, and fought hard against Florida State.
I haven't seen any lack of commitment from this team.
It's a young team. They aren't confident in assignments, and are inconsistent. I'm willing to give the players and the coaches the benefit of the doubt in regard to commitment.
They do need to complete tackles, though. This is a team with plenty more potential as they get more game experience.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It hurts me to say that UVa looks like a pretty good team. I've watched every game they've played, and they have some real play makers, some solid defensive players and have definitely "toughened up" for lack of a better term from top to bottom. I refuse to even entertain the notion that this is the year they beat us, but I won't be able to claim to be shocked if they do. Man, I can't believe I just said that.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I do not like our odds in any of our games left. BC looks like they'll run all over us, UVA is frankly better than us this year, and Miami & Pitt are tough games
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Our defense is thin, but I'm expecting them to get better. I also won't be surprised if our offense gets better.
UVa should give it their best shot, though. They are better than expected, and their defense is well-disciplined. Unfortunately, we could stand to learn from that. Perkins-Zaccheus are a lethal combo, and Perkins can get yardage on his feet.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I would put my money on Tech to win even if we went 0-11 and uva went 11-0. The streak is a mental block to uva at this point. The rest of the season is thrown out of the window when we play them.

BYU and Memphis are both G5 schools, but BYU has historically been a great school; even competing for National Championships. Bronco took the reigns with 10-win seasons and LaVell Edwards only 4 years removed.
Fuente turned around a dumpster fire with no history of success at Memphis.

I'm not forgetting anything. It's not easy to find players of any age that want to adhere to their honor code. I had a good friend from HS go to BYU and I visited her and saw this firsthand. Their standards are rediculous and the students take them very seriously and self police other students.
That's a good point. But to counter that, you could say there's probably a reason why a historically good program offered Mendenhall the job. Either way, UVA is trending up and VT is trending down and that's scary :(

You know they have to hire a LDS coach, right? After Bronco left they wanted to hire Ken Niumatalolo and when he passed they basically had no other options than Oregon State's DC... even though Oregon State had gone 2-10 while giving up 37 points per game. In other words, no other team on earth was anywhere close to considering hiring him as a head coach.

PSU and James Franklin lucked out again against Iowa, with a few assists from the refs and one major bonehead play by the Hawkeyes. Iowa should have won that game.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Seems to me that should have been illegal procedure on Iowa's offense. That receiver was waving his arms and nowhere close to being set at the snap. Wouldn't that be a dead ball penalty? Iowa's QB and TE weren't on the same page when the ball was snapped, which is what lead to the INT. I guess the QB changed the play at the last minute, and his intended target, the TE, didn't get the change in time. Sucks for them, but I was still hoping for the penalty that would have allowed them to replay the down, minus the 5.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
From what I saw, the Iowa QB audibled, then went back to the original play call. The TE was still communicating to the WR to his left that the audible was called off when the QB called for the snap because the play clock was about to expire. Even if that's a timing route, the QB had enough of a look before throwing the ball to see that the TE was turned around facing the other way. That ball should have been thrown out the back of the end zone, reset, try again.
As for the illegal procedure, I didn't even think of that. I don't think the rules for being set aren't as strict for receivers as they are for OL. I think receivers can still be talking to each other as long as they aren't moving around (i.e., have their feet set the whole time).

I'm at UW@Cal (don't ask). I'm sitting right next to the half-full student section, and I'm embarrassed for them. They have a hype-man similar to soccer games, leading the cheers with a massive speaker setup, and before they took a 12-7 lead in the second half they still only had about 10% participation the whole game.

It's the Red Bandana game too. RIP Canes.
Not gonna lie, both BC and Miami's uniforms look sharp af.
BC's O & Loeffler looking good on this drive. Trying not to feel too negative, but I already have a bad feeling about next week.
Cager just mossed the hell out of that DB. First foot came down in bounds. Should be a touchdown.
We're gonna get mauled by both these teams 😟

We're gonna get trashed at lane by SCOTT LOEFLLER HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
When you're watching football and suddenly a volleyball game breaks out.
That was one of the most unique things I've ever seen happen in a football game.
I don't think I've ever watched Boston College lose a red bandanna game, to be honest.
The commentary team said they're 3-3 in the Red Bandana Game, which I don't believe for a second.
Coincidentally, the only RB games that I've watched were USC, FSU last year, and this one now.
Loeffler and co doing us a solid for our coastal division hopes
Best outcome for us. Miami loses a conference game and we become BC's trap game next week after their big home win.
Yup, solid result for us, and regrettably for UVA as well but we're still in control of our destiny.
It would be all goacc coastal division chaos if UNC beats loluva
To be fair, even with a loss to BC we would still control our own destiny for the Coastal.
Just realized we also get BC before they host Clemson.
Trap. Game.
I don't know how I feel about this drum and bass guitar interlude BC keeps playing between downs.
I'm in a bar watching, but the speakers are on the World Series. Sounds like I lucked out.
They're playing the verse from Any Way You Want It by Journey after every offensive snap and all you can hear is the bass and drums.
Yea we're gonna have our hands full next week
FTFY
Yea we're going to have our hands full the next four weeks!
I feel good about how poor Brown's been as a passer. We need to follow the same plan as last year and just go all out to stop Dillon, which will be a tall task, and force Brown to throw it 30-35 times.
Hmmm stop a running game...sounds familiar!
Let's just hope they don't learn if our Achilles heel I mean the QB sweep
BC runs a different scheme and you can't just change your identity in a week. Yes
I could do without the ACC Blitz...
Whoever wins the Coastal, gets the honor of being destroyed by Clemson in Charlotte. Yay!
I dont understand this view at all. It's still a divisional title. Would you rather finish winless and last instead?
Where in my post, did you conclude I want us to lose out?
Uh are you suggesting that the coastal winner wont get taken behind the acc woodshed by Clemson? I dont understand you comment.
The implication in the post above is that we don't actually want to win the Coastal because we'll just get embarrassed by Clemson, which is an opinion I've seen multiple times on this site recently.
It is better to win the Coastal and lose to Clemson than to not win the Coastal at all.
Thats just your inference. To me it just sounds like he is saying getting destroyed by clemson isnt fun.
Wisec4g used sarcasm!
It was super effective!
Sure, but the sarcasm was that the fans would enjoy it, not that it wouldn't happen.
To me, going out of your way to say it isn't fun to watch implies that you would rather it not happen in the first place. Or maybe I'm reading too much into this particular comment because of a bunch of other people who have said exactly that over the last couple weeks.
No, you got it right.
Maybe I misunderstood your comment on sarcasm. The sarcastic part was "Yay!"
Pulling for Duke and UNC today.
Of our remaining games, the LOLUVA game will be the worst matchup for us.
Is it weird that the game I oddly feel best about of the last four is Miami?
Unfortunately I agree. I don't think it's quite as bad as GT but they have a solid running game, Zaccheus is a savvy veteran WR up against our young DBs, and Perkins is mobile. I fear Zaccheus is going to eat us alive on short/intermediate passes and that's going to open up running lanes for Perkins.
Seemed like to me that UVa's entire offense was Perkins-Zaccheus passing, Zaccheus running, and Perkins running.
So those guys need to be covered.
Perkins is much worse when he's under pressure, but will break for a run if he sees an opening.
Not like a mobile QB has ever hurt us in the past
It's amazing to me how much your run game can open up and how much more effective the read option and misdirection are when you have a true, credible run threat at QB.
This just in: UVa doesn't suck at football this year...I think this is the year the streak ends.
Make Clemson ING Again!
UNC has gotten back into the UVa game.
UVA 17 - UNC 14 going into halftime.
UVa made good adjustments at halftime.
Their defense is solid, and there's some coaching and adjusting going on there.
Carolina sucked just a little too much today.
Must be nice. Sigh.
Well UNC had a decent first half at least ...
Now let's see if Duke can take out Pitt
I do not like our odds in any of our games left. BC looks like they'll run all over us, UVA is frankly better than us this year, and Miami & Pitt are tough games
I'm not willing to concede the season yet.
That sequence on the goal line TD by UNC was some of the worst officiating I have ever seen (the absolute worst being the Sugar Bowl, of course).
Watching the UNC vs UVa game and I honestly can't see us beating the Hoos this year. And yes, I hate myself for saying this statement.
I can see it!
I understand your thinking though, they are playing much better than in previous years.
I could see it going either way.
I would put my money on Tech to win even if we went 0-11 and uva went 11-0. The streak is a mental block to uva at this point. The rest of the season is thrown out of the window when we play them.
They'd give Alabama a run for their money. Dominant.
Bronco is doing more with less this season than a certain staff in the southwestern part of the state.
I'll probably get downvoted for this, but 10 years of winning at BYU is a more impressive resume than 2 years of winning at Memphis
BYU and Memphis are both G5 schools, but BYU has historically been a great school; even competing for National Championships. Bronco took the reigns with 10-win seasons and LaVell Edwards only 4 years removed.
Fuente turned around a dumpster fire with no history of success at Memphis.
I think you're forgetting how hard it is to recruit at BYU.
You're also forgetting how easy it is to recruit a certain subset of the US population that is older than 20 years old to BYU.
I'm not forgetting anything. It's not easy to find players of any age that want to adhere to their honor code. I had a good friend from HS go to BYU and I visited her and saw this firsthand. Their standards are rediculous and the students take them very seriously and self police other students.
BYU Honor Code
They're G5 (WAC/MWC when they were in a conference) because none of the schools they competed against recruit well, either.
They simply won way more than their competition.
How hard is it to recruit at a school that won 23 conference titles from 1965 to 2007? Doesn't appear to be a giant concern.
So, no, based on relevance I didn't address it.
That's a good point. But to counter that, you could say there's probably a reason why a historically good program offered Mendenhall the job. Either way, UVA is trending up and VT is trending down and that's scary :(

Even the officials like to troll loluva. The ref said "Timeout Virginia Tech" near the end of the 4th. Their fans got so mad, 😂😂😂😂
VIrginia Tech inside their heads.
Rent free
14 years worth of back rent.
Clemson beating FSU so hard it's turning Nole fans into UVA behavior
LOLUVA is first in the Coastal and they still can't fill their stadium. Almost 20k short! 😂
Travon McMillian 75 Yard TD
Tackling/defense in duke-pitt game is possibly the worst Ive ever seen. Its like watching a Big12 game
Eat shit, Pitt.
or a VT-GT game
😢
Kentucky failed to lose to Missouri even though they tried their hardest. Could not convert 4th and short for the life of them.
I actually like watching Syracuse play and Dungey is probably my favorite non-Hokie in the league right now.
Dino Babers is a really good coach. I love his offense.
Wow cuse is boat racing the pack
Yeah, I hate to say it, but Babers definitely has Syracuse trending in the right direction. Also, a pretty likable guy by all accounts - the anti-Pat Narduzzi.
Georgia vs Kentucky next week determines the SEC east.

With so many teams in the 20s losing I expect the Hoos to be ranked this week. Weird times indeed.
Syracuse should be ranked, too. They just beat a ranked NC St and their only blemish is a close loss to Clemson who has been demolishing everyone else.
Yeah who thought we would see the day that ACC bottom dwellers BC, UVA, and Cuse are teams 2-4 in the acc behind clemson?
The ACC Wheel of Destiny just keeps on spinning.
Losing to Pitt is also a blemish.
Yeah, but then again, Pitt is 3-1 in the ACC. They'll be a tough out for us.
By my count 11 ranked teams lost this week... Is that a record?
Probably not, since every article I see about it mentions that the 8 losses to unranked for is a record, but nothing about the total of 11 teams losing. There's probably a couple bowl seasons that have had more ranged teams lose, and there might be a couple times when there were a lot of ranked-vs-ranked regular season games, but I couldn't find anything specific.
UVA and BC are ranked, 23 and 24 respectively. I guess lucky for us, we're 2-1 against ranked teams technically /s
