These quotes from Clayton HS head coach Hunter Jenks in TKP's recent article about 4-star safety J.R. Walker didn't make the cut, but I wanted to share them anyways.
To me they provided a bit of insight on why Charley Wiles has so much success recruiting in North Carolina.
HUNTER JENKS ON WHICH VIRGINIA TECH COACHES HE'S HAD A CHANCE TO TALK WITH AND MEET:
Coach Wiles is our main recruiter for the area. I can call him at any time, and he's going to call me back. If there's a question I need answered, he's going to get back in a timely manner.
ON WHETHER A CALL WOULD BE ABOUT RECRUITING OR XS AND OS:
Just whatever. He's a good dude. You see a lot of coaches come through and recruit, when Coach Wiles comes in, I think he's one of the recruiters that are real genuine, and really wants to take time and get to know the players as an individual, and kind of breakdown what that what to know based on the individual, and not just a recruiting pitch that they give everybody.

Good to hear are recruiting doesn't seem "canned". I know it's easy to see the pain of recruiting misses on field and these boards, but would rather see us recruit in a genuine manner even if the "big dogs" use some sketchy tactics to win over 17 year old kids. Blacksburg isn't the easiest place or program to recruit to, but looks like we all-around are laying the groundwork with coaches in the region to be known as guys that recruit the right way (sans G. Scott) which pays dividends over the long run.
Wiles obviously needs to spend less time getting to know recruits as people not just players, and more time coaching up our defensive line! /s
This kind of thing is always nice to hear about, and Walker enrolling early means he has a decent shot at contributing in 2019
Wiles has been around as long as Foster, and our D-line is typically something to always be proud of. Severely underrated position coach.
And an all around good (and funny) dude.
He spoke at a hokie club dinner at Martinsville Speedway (the danville and martinsville/henry county club share the event, I was lucky enough to get invited...and my dad won the auction on a signed Orion Martin jersey which is doooope). Super personable dude and had everyone laughing a third of the time, wanting to drink a third, and run through a brick wall the last third. I like Charlie very much.
Not sure, but I thought Wiles had technically been on staff longer than Bud.
