Under the new redshirt rule, QP has 2 games that he can play in for the remainder of the season, and we can still redshirt him. Given how this year has gone, is there any way that we do not redshirt QP?
I originally was on the mindset of "there is no way the coaches can play him beyond 2 more games" since this year has been - umm - not what we expected.
But then this came out today.
Fuente on QB Quincy Patterson: "You never got the feeling that he was anything other than ready." Said he's not responsible for the entire offensive package. Still a niche role. Could see more of him going forward, though. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) November 5, 2018
Thoughts? Is there any logical reason why we would not redshirt the kid?

I don't think they'll burn it. 3 games to go and he can take a snap in 2 of them safely.
I was honestly shocked to see him get in vs. BC. I get that Hooker had a bad snap when he went in, but for no more than QP came in for, I scratched my head and wondered why we didn't put Hooker in for the designed package?
I think it may be because we didn't want to risk hurting Hooker too potentially leaving us with only QP for the next few weeks.
And prob not sure the extent of Willis' injury, whether a quick sideline breather or done for the game. Toss him in there and see what he's got anyway. There were 4 games left and he's got 3 available to play in. Why not.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that was Corny's decision, don't recall the reason.
That was what Fuente said in the post game. I can't quote directly, but it was along the lines of Cornelson telling Fuente "I want Quincy" and Fuente being surprised.
Edit: found another interview where Fuente says it was Cornelson's preference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5YcmovK1HQ&feature=youtu.be&t=108
Cornelsen wanted to run the Wild Turkey for a few snaps rather than bringing in Hooker to run the regular O while Willis was evaluated on the sideline. Decent call since QP has been able to move the chains and Hooker hasn't looked great in limited reps running the regular offense.
I doubt there's a lot of film on QP. Why not throw him in there and see if you can sneak one past them.
Gut says yes, they'll let him on on a drive or two in 2/3 next games. Whether it be to just switch up the look or to try and get some kind of rejuvenation out the bench and stands. If he really is the golden boy future of the program I think they're going to make sure he can light it up once they hand the reins over to him.
Yes he will redshirt. If the 3rd game is a blowout, then no need to play anyway. If the 3rd game is tied with 4 minutes left.. his package of zone read handoffs and a sprint out 5 yard pass won't make the difference anyway. And he could play every minute of the other 2 games and still redshirt. Redshirt is a no brainer.
Pray to gawd we keep QP's red-shirt. Burning Tyrod's red-shirt in two separate years are part of the greatest "What If" scenario in VT Football history.
The 2nd coming of the Tyrod Taylor scenario is what I fear.
I would love the 2nd coming of anything related to Tyrod Taylor lol
If we want to play him, fine... but we have 3 games to play him twice. Barring injury to Willis and Hooker, if we see him in all 3, I will rage that we burnt his redshirt after he's only played in 2 series the previous 8 games.
Does it really matter? Josh Jackson will be a redshirt junior and Ryan Willis will be a redshirt senior, I doubt QP will start during the 2019 season...we can always redshirt him next year...and if the hype train with him is really real, he's not going to stay in Blacksburg for five years anyway.
If Fuente believes there's a legit chance we can run the table and win the coastal with QP in those games, I say fuck it and let him play in the remaining five games in that scenario (the last three regular season, ACCCG and bowl game).
Here's hoping that QP gives both a run for their money in the spring...no redshirt needed next year.
Exactly... and even if he doesn't start perhaps- gasps- we can play him in situations anyway- like when our offense can't gain a yard in the 3rd quarter of games. Perhaps we could be innovative and try to spark the team and score more points and play him AND jackson/willis. Wow imagine that.
If he is able to beat out two guys with significant starting experience and multiple years in Fuente's system next year, then I'm confident he's going to be a high level NFL draft prospect in 2021 or 2022.
If he redshirted this year and starts in 2019, the only way he would stay for the 2022 season is if he's insistent on finishing his mechanical engineering degree before he plays in the NFL.
I hope that he redshirts.
I think he'll be starting by 2020 and it would be nice if he was a redshirt soph at that time.
Yes...
He was just giving QP praise. No way they burn the shirt. I have been a staunch defender of Fuente during these recent dark days, but, if they burn the redshirt at this point in this forsaken season, I will have lost all faith in this regime.
At this point, any bowl we get is likely to be a garbage game. If QP truly is the QB of the future, why not save the bowl game as one of his 4 and play him as the starter?
He could experience a full game plan of prep, with extended time to learn everything and it would give them a full game of tape to diagnose and work on all through next off season.
That'd be a pretty shitty thing to do to Willis. "Hey, it wasn't a great year, but you led us to another bowl game, now, if you don't mind...have a seat while we let the freshman play this one."
It took me a minute to realize you meant VT and not every opponent we play next year.
My emotional response is . . . if Fuente fails to maintain Quincy's redshirt for this season, then I will lose all faith in Fuente's decision making. The season is lost; therefore, give Quincy experience in one more regular season game (say UVA) and leave him with the opportunity to play some series in the bowl game (assuming we get to one).
Please, Fuente, do not make a stupid decision.
It would be absolutely stupid to waste a year of his eligibility when we have really nothing to play for except pride this year. The time to pull the redshirt was weeks ago if we were going to do it.
That said, the second we know it won't affect his redshirt eligibility due to the new rule I would like to see Quincy take over the offense full time. We know what we have in JJ and RW (which is not enough) and at this point it seems obvious Hooker is not going to be a factor. See if Quincy can be a spark. Get him some experience. Just not at the expense of his redshirt.
So where does this put Dwayne Lawson in the mix?
Personally I want a huge battle for the starting job. Let's get the best product on the field, and a little friendly competition should raise the level of play of whomever takes the first snaps next year.
The anticipation and expectation currently being put on QP is Lawson-esque. I hope it pans out differently.
I don't think many people had as high a hope for Lawson as we have for QP. The hype it at a whole different level.
I'd like to see us not play him against Pitt, just to be safe. That way if the unthinkable happens and Willis and Hooker both get injured, our hand isn't forced by having to play him in the last two games of the season.
In that scenario, I will gladly volunteer as tribute and take snaps to preserve QPs redshirt.
1. Pitt
2. Miami
3. LOLUVa
4. ACCCG
5. Bowl
By my math there are four games after Pitt, not two.
4 & 5 are postseason, brah.
Do postseason games count towards the redshirt rule? I seriously don't know, I just assumed they would.
Yeah, they do. I was just joking around that I said the last two games "of the season" and he said we have four games left.
either go all in or keep RS.
if it's one series in each of the next 3 or 4 games, that'll seem like a waste. If coaches decide he's the Hokies version of Tua 2nd half of the championship game (meaning that QP is our best chance to win the coastal), then I'm OK with it, even if VT goes 0-3 in those games.
They definitely tried to run the fake QB run, pull up jump pass to the RB that we all remember Sam Rogers turning into some big plays with Evans in 2016. But QP saw that it wasn't open/route was obstructed and pulled it down and ran for a few yards instead.
And he still made it a decent gain too. We better hope this dude develops into the full package because even this limited playing looks promising
I think he redshirts. You don't burn the redshirt for such a limited percentage of the season (unless you're in the national championship game).
Has there been any updates on JJ? I thought early reports said he could potentially be back towards the end of the regular season?
Can QP play TE some too without burning his redshirt?
***ducking the storm of beer cans currently being thrown***
I think he redshirts and starts next year. QP is finally Fuente's "guy". He's either going to ride him to glory or he will go down with that ship.
Burning a redshirt wohld be rather irresponsible imo.
I'm a big fan. But they should not burn it. But I would definitely get the most bang for the buck in these final games and stop using him on 2 series only.
He redshirts this year and starts next year, takes us to the playoffs in 2020.
