Lamar Jackson left for the NFL and Louisville is 2-7 (soon to be 2-8).
Here is how VT faired after the departure of an "electric" QB
1995: Deshazo was a great player for VT. His last season VT had went 8-4. VT went 10-2 with a Sugar Bowl win vs. Texas with Jim Druckermiller under center. Not bad!
2001: Everyone knows how big a deal Michael Vick was to VT football. The year after he left VT went 8-4.
2006: Marcus Vick's unceremonious departure left Sean Glenon as the starter. VT when 10-3
2010: Logan Thomas takes over from Tyrod Taylor and VT goes 11-3.
That's pretty impressive!

Then he became a beloved legend.
Those were my college years at VT. Thankfully they let him have the time to transform the program. Worked out pretty well.
Maybe people will remember this comment and apply it to Fuente before calling for his head this season.

But I doubt it.
To be fair to Beamer, he and Fuente took over very different programs. VT was an independent under NCAA sanctions when Beamer took over. Once Dooley's recruits ran out the sanctions began to have a MAJOR effect.
Go back and check those box scores from 1992. Our 1992 Hokies were much more competitive than the 2018 variety.
I actually think Beamer has become underappreciated by a lot of people, even those on this site. Yeah, his last few years were not great but I actually never felt like we were terrible. We were in most every game and I always felt that we had a chance going into any of those games. I think it was the recruiting that really fell off that sucked the most.
I think it was 2014 that one extra TD per game would have given us 11-1.

That's not what this is about. It was, as stated, a thought provoked by watching how Louisville could not recover from the departure of Lamar Jackson.
Right, and I expressed my opinion on who I'd rather have coaching this team today. I didn't realize I said anything controversial.
You didn't. I was probably more clarifying my intent.
I admit up-front I am biased toward Coach Beamer because we were in the same class.
I think many lambasted Beamer during the his last years coaching the team because of their own expectations. The team had, by the standards he had set, had mediocre to poor records. Like this year's team, critical personnel losses due to injures were major factors in those late career let-downs. To his credit, he never lost the team and they loved him to the end (in my opinion).
In the end, he was ready to leave and he handled with it class. Fuente endeared himself to the fan base by emulating the same.
I am disappointed in the results from this season so far but, in my opinion, calling for the heads of the coaching staff is
stupidmisguided. [NOTE: I am not saying the one that is calling for change is an idiot but I do think his/her passion is misplaced.]At this point, it may be unrealistic to hope for a continuation of the bowl streak and the win streak against UVA is in real jeopardy. But I am a HOKIE football fan through and through. They are my team and I will continue to root for them to the end. Go HOKIES!
