I do remember the first year Fuentes got here they were talking about doing so much extra conditioning because Fuentes wanted to run a fast paced offense; seems to have stopped that aspect of his game progressively
I think the fact that this offense looking nothing like the desired offense says a lot about the tools in the toolbelt.

That's a bad conclusion imo. Obviously we want better players and our running game is hit or miss, but that is a terrible excuse for play tempo. 🌽 is going to call bad plays anyway, might as well get them out fast
Well if the coach wants to go fast and yet is not, what does that tell you?
Personally I think if tempo is the key to an offense's success, there won't be success. The offense has to execute first then pick up the speed to put even more pressure on the defense.

I think the opposite. The point of tempo is it makes your plays more likely to succeed. You go quick, try and snap before a defense is set or has time to identify formations and personnel, keep them from substituting if you find mismatches, not let them get their plays out in time. All this stacks odds in favor of the offense. The longer you sit there pre snap the longer the defense has to figure out assignments and anticipate certain plays
I think the tempo is closely aligned with this teams inability to execute the base offense. The most likely plays out of tempo are the base offense and the RPOs off those base plays.
Fuente's offense was a simple machine at Memphis. Now, it has the complexity of a Loeffler offense.
Maybe it's the talent. Maybe it's the three different types of QBs he has had at VT. Maybe his base plays aren't working vs ACC competition. But it seems to me that the Fuente offense is under redesign as we are rolling down the road. And that has impacted the tempo.
This is something to contemplate. If I recall correctly, in Fuente's first year, he made a comment about ACC defenses.
The first play from scrimmage in the 2017 Clemson game is a major example of how some parts of this scheme aren't that effective against top notch defenses. There are two common themes in our offense.
Misdirection and "making a man miss".
At the P5 level defenders are smart, big and fast. At the G5 level you can pick two of the three. How may these three things in combination thwart our attack?
In fact the size thing is something VT has started to adopt, when possible. You don't see us running 220-230 lbs defensive ends anymore (Gaines is the smallest to play recently at 235). Some of our DBs are almost that big!!!
The other thing that seems kind of odd is that we insist the plays that wouldn't work against our own defense should work against someone else's. We make a living on defense (in a typical year) with single players "not missing".
Finally the plays that we execute most successfully are not "scheme" plays. They are plays where our receivers physically beat the defender (with agility, speed or force) and our QB throws a nice pass.
I think we can keep insisting that "execution" is entirely the issue, but is it? Do other teams in the ACC use our offensive philosophy successfully? The shear number of yards Jerrod Evans rushed for suggests our plays broke down.
Beamer and his staff used to visit other schools to study their offenses and defenses. Are we still doing that? I hope so.

I think some of it may be trying to keep the defense off the field. So we're trying to limit the other team's offensive possessions. Except what happens is that we end up playing from behind and our defense doesn't work as well when we're playing from behind.

First and foremost, I know this thread was made as a lighthearted joke thread, but here are my actual, not angry thoughts:
Unless Memphis ran a lot of HUNH under Fuente, I think we mistakenly assumed that our new spread offense would be a HUNH spread because that was very popular for awhile. We pretty much never go fast, and our offense is much more predicated on identifying matchups and leverage to attack that we attempt to create through our motions. There are times when I wished we would go faster, and we have a few times, but I don't think that has ever been a major part of our game plans, for better or for worse. The HUNH is a very double edged sword if you aren't advancing the ball consistently. A few HUNH 3 and outs in succession can wreck the defense as well. At our recent level of execution that seems like a risk we aren't willing to take.
Apparently we don't have enough (20) WRs to go "fast" yet.

Lets run more read options with a qb that can't run
Don't care about deep efficiency made up stats... this offense is no different than the Logan Thomas offense... run for 1 yard on first down because teams know our run plays - or we can't block at all - your pick. Throw a screen or jet sweep on second down for 4 yards and then run the called qb draw on 3rd down because we don't think we can pass protect. That's our offense- same as it was with Logan Thomas.. every key 3rd and 3-4 yards against Pitt was a scared bullshit qb draw play. It sucks. This offense we were promised sucks. Period. Against any decent P5 defense we get our ass kicked on offense.

This is the sad part. I haven't watched intently enough this year to understand exactly what we are doing. I have figured out that it does not work.
Sometimes I feel a bit like Fuente did the ol bait and switch on us. The offense doesn't look, to me, anything like his offenses at Memphis or TCU.
What is it about Blacksburg that makes our football team bad at offense? Is it in the water?
Like, how can we bring in a guy who has at least somehow proven he can make a team score and watch as our offense gets...worse?

We should not forget that TCU was in the Mountain West when Fuente was there (G5) and Fuente was the OC (meaning offense was his sole focus). At Memphis (another G5) Darrel Dickey was Co-OC with Cornelsen. So... It's not exactly the same situation.
Our tempo is as fast as 80 year olds dancing the foxtrot.
We had a QB who could run the read option but wasn't as fast breaking the line. He could hit the short and midrange passes like a champ, but needed to work on his deep ball.
We have a QB whom the D doesn't respect on the read option. He throws a nice deep fade from 30 yards but struggles on short and midrange passes. And after 5 games still doesn't read the field well.
If we went tempo, we'd lose the TOP battle.
The offense is so slow they don't use a play clock they use a play calendar.
