Who's the No. 2 QB now?

Is QP our number 2 QB now? What happened to Hooker? Has anything been made official?

I know there's talk about disrupting the flow with throwing QP in there, but my question is more why did we put QP in there and not HH?

My understanding is Hooker is technically the #2 with QP being the package quarterback, I believe Fuente mentioned this when Jackson went down and they put QP in the Hooker spot on their QB run package, I don't know how that would actually work out if Willis couldn't play though.

Correct. Hooker is the back-up, while QP comes with special packages and doesn't practice the full playbook.

That doesn't make sense to me though - why not put your no. 2 QB in and have him ACTUALLY prepared in case something happens to Willis? If something did happen to Willis, HH would be coming in colder than QP!

The coaches' logic, I believe, is the exact opposite of what you're saying. QP can't handle the full playbook, but they believe he's talented enough to run some wildcat plays (even if everybody and their mom knows he's running). You'd have to assume that during practice, HH is practicing the full playbook with the 2's. If Ryan Willis gets injured, you'd fully expect to see HH come in (cold or not) and be able to run the offense.

In their minds (which, even if I don't agree with them, they're the coaches), they believe the specific package QP is running will get them some yards (there's also the possibility that it allows the coaches to talk to Willis without burning a time-out, which makes A TON of sense).

Because if Hooker gets hurt running wildcat plays and something happens to willis they have less flexibility when it comes to QPs redshirt

Except according to Cornelson, QP practices all the same plays as Willis

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I think that's to mean in recent practices, since he also made a statement that they taylor the offense to what he's best at.

I think the basic thing is, when QP has come into the game, is strictly for wildcat plays, not as a the "back-up" and that's why you don't see HH. As mentioned above, they don't want HH to get injured running the wildcat.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Then that's even worse IMO - sans one really bad throw to the end zone, the D will just key in on the run vs QP. At least with HH in there there's the threat of a throw (or at least more of a threat).

Further, I say throw HH in there to do more than just wildcat plays. Ask him to ACTUALLY run normal plays if you want to talk to Willis on the sideline and give him a breather. By throwing in QP there to just do running plays you're letting the D key-in on him, and QP isn't a passing threat yet.

. At least with HH in there there's the threat of a throw (or at least more of a threat).

No, there isn't.

HH has not thrown a single pass this season. NO defense is going to even pretend to worry about that. There is no reason to. QP threw 5 passes and they still setup for the run.

There is absolutely no reason any defense would consider HH a passing threat.

Umm.....it's been noted HH is our number 2 QB for the season.

And you think an opposing team won't consider him throwing the ball?

QP has run on all plays save one where he couldn't see a wide open TE. I'm not mad at him - he'll grow - he's young.

HH has been in the system longer and has a better GRASP of the offense.

He absolutely would be considered a passing threat and any D coordinator who's got any brains would recognize that.

I thought Hooker threw the ball really well in the spring game. And his speed- yeah. I just want to see him get some reasonable PT last 2-3 games to see what he can do. At this point its silly to hold him back in fear of a injury to him AND Willis forcing QP to play. Heck, use Dejuan Ellis in that case- he's got some 'shirt games available.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

and has a better GRASP of the offense.

He does? Do you know that for a fact?

And you think an opposing team won't consider him throwing the ball?

No. I know that. Because they have NEVER gone into pass coverage when he's in. Go back and watch the film. They won't go into pass coverage until he completes a pass in a game. You know why? Because there is no reason to. There is no reason to because there is no evidence.

He absolutely would be considered a passing threat and any D coordinator who's got any brains would recognize that.

Why would they recognize that? He completed two passes in the spring game. There is ZERO evidence he's going to complete a pass in a real game.

Of course he can complete a pass. Is that a joke? He has been protected by the staff who chose not to put him in that position.

Lol wut? You serious? He's our NUMBER 2 QB. If he couldn't throw for some reason then he would NOT be our number 2 QB and he'd be behind QP.

I dunno if you're just trolling or not, but sheesh. Smell the flowers, man. You're acting like no other QB but RW and JJ can throw a ball.

Not trolling and this ain't about me.

QP has thrown 5 passes this year. So that makes RW, JJ and QP having thrown a pass this year.

No DC is going to come out in pass coverage against HH. If he throws a ball in a game, that may change. Until then, they are going to line up against the run.

Thanks for admitting I'm right.

"LOL's" and condescension are deflections and not compelling arguments to the contrary.

It's actually that I don't feel like feeding a troll. You clearly aren't objective, so there's no more point in wasting my breath with someone who isn't thinking. I'd ask you to go eat a snickers bar or something, but I don't think it would actually change whom you are at all. Have a good day.

I'm completely objective. I evaluate what I see not what I think I know.

What I see: HH doesn't pass. Period. How is that not objective? Nothing can be more objective than what is plainly evident on video.

No you said no defensive coordinator is going to cover the pass. If that's true, Peoples could throw a touchdown pass. You are just way over the top when you say a D-1 qb CAN'T pass.

No, I didn't.

I said,

Even in run formations CBs cover WRs. It means not being in a primarily pass formation which is more about the number of DBs, how they line up, and what the safeties do. It also affects whether the DB's double cover and/or drop pursuit after the snap. I'm sure you know that.

You are just way over the top when you say a D-1 qb CAN'T pass.

Where did I say that?

I said he's not a passing threat. Completing a pass and being a passing threat are two different things. You can complete all the passes you want behind the line of scrimmage and even a little past it, and the defense is not going to be aligned the way they would be if you were throwing downfield. Don't put words in my mouth.

Furthermore, you don't know why they don't let Hooker pass. Why aren't they not "protecting" QP. He's a TRUE freshman and he's already thrown five passes.

I'm just talking about what I have seen the defenses do (after the first drive at W&M) when they see HH. They have 8 men in the box. That's not my opinion. It's a fact that can be verified by watching video.

Makes some sense, I guess. I wouldn't mind seeing HH come in for some packages, also. I think he is deserving, considering the situation that we are in, just to see how he reacts. I hope he's not being penalized by Fuente for not handling that errant snap in the BC game. Heck, I'd like to see him run the whole offense for a series or two per game to see what we have.

Does anyone know the status of Josh Jackson? Since there's been no talk about it I assume he's completely done for the year but it has been a good 7 weeks since the injury. What are the #sauces saying?

I have no #sauces, but in my uneducated in football and medicine, I would sit him the rest of the year. I see no good of trying to get him back for 1 or maybe 2 games. I think at this point it would put the offense in a bad spot and they aren't in that good a spot right now anyway. Let him heal up over the off season and then make the decision in the spring who QB1 is going to be for 2019.

This may not be a popular opinion, but put me in the camp of Hooker or Jackson transfering before the start of next season. It may not happen even until the first game since we may not have a clear starter until then. I have no sauces but I have a hard time thinkin that either Jackson stays if anyone else is announced starter and or Hooker who may leave if Patterson passes him as on the backup depth chart during camp.

if they wanted to go to a D1 program, they'd have to sit out a year (both have burned redshirts). I would guess they'd stick around one more year and graduate and then go to a different program with two years left (assuming Jackson would get medical waiver for this season).

Always choose joy.

You can only get a medical waiver if you lose large portions of 2 seasons to injury.

No they changed that rule this past off-season. If you redshirted your first season then you can claim a medical redshirt for losing another season to injury. That is why McClease is a redshirt Sophomore now.

Nice! Thanks for the correction.

Jackson might be able to graduate in the spring or summer this year since it's his 3rd year on campus depending on the courseload he's taken. Transfering and sitting or grad transfering is kinda the same scenario for Hooker, he'll have to sit on the bench either way and would have 2 years left either as a r-jr or grad transfer to play 2 years.

WHO'S THE NO. 2 QB NOW?

our whole offense is a big pile of #2 if you ask me.

Take your leg.

I may have the unpopular opinion but I think our offense isn't terrible. We move the ball and then individual mistakes kill drives. They are also being asked to move the ball 75+ yards almost every drive because the defense is non existent. When you have to put together long drives every time, it is hard to do that without making a mistake along the way.

I will say the offense has been disappointing given what we were all hoping for this year but I wouldn't say they are garbage.

I would agree, but we've had decades of the defense doing just that on their side of the ball. Offense gives the other guys a short field and the defense gets the stop over and over and over and over and over... It's the offense's turn and they keep making multiple dumb mistakes/bad playcalls to derail drives. They don't need to be perfect, they get 3 tries to get ten yards every set of downs and can't manage it.
