At this point, this is purely for informational purposes, so folks are aware of what the postseason possibilities are this year.

1.) CFP (if ACC teams are selected) - Orange or Cotton Bowl
2.) New Year's Six - Peach or Fiesta Bowl
3.) Camping World Bowl
4.) Tier 1 (equal selection) - Belk, Sun, and Pinstripe Bowls, plus Gator or Music City Bowl
5.) Tier 2: Military Bowl
6.) Tier 2: Independence Bowl
7.) Tier 2: Quick Lane Bowl
8.) Tier 2: Gasparilla (formerly St. Petersburg) or Heart of Dallas Bowl
9.) If the ACC still has bowl eligible teams but other conferences don't - Birmingham Bowl
Since the Orange Bowl is a semi-final, the top of the selection process is simpler this year. For one thing, the ACC does not have access to the Citrus Bowl, so the Camping World Bowl clearly has the first pick after the NY6.
The ACC champ is guaranteed a spot in the NY6. If they're not in the semi-finals, they will take one of the "at-large" spots in the Peach or Fiesta Bowls. (Rose and Sugar are locked in with the other four P5 conferences.)
However, if the ACC champ is in the semi-finals, there is no guarantee for another ACC team to make a NY6 bowl. A second ACC team would have to be ranked in the top 10 (or possibly higher depending on the other conference champs/replacement teams).
There are two years left on the Gator/Music City deal where they pick either an ACC or Big Ten team, and both bowls have one pick for each conference left. That means whichever team doesn't take an ACC team this year will be locked into taking one next year.

Comments
Little different since we are taken out of the citrus bowl
I didn't realize our tie to the Citrus bowl was taken away. Do you know why this happened? I feel like without that our bowl tie-ins look a little weak compared to other conferences.
We only get Citrus if the Big Ten goes to the Orange Bowl. Since Orange is a semi final, the contract doesn't apply.
If we were to make it to a NY6 bowl which one would you all want to go to. Peach Bowl or Fiesta Bowl?
Peach. Makes it a lot easier for our fanbase to travel.
Fiesta is most likely to get the G5 team.
Yes
Lol, I love this comment now.
Oh what summer children were we.
Current ACC bowl standings (I'm including Notre Dame since they do affect the conference's bowl selection).
Eligible:
Clemson 10-0
*Notre Dame 10-0
Syracuse 8-2
Boston College 7-3
UVA 7-3
Duke 7-3
NC State 6-3
Pitt 6-4
Georgia Tech 6-4
On the edge:
Wake Forest 5-5
Miami 5-5
If we go with the current committee rankings, Clemson and Notre Dame are in the CFP along with Alabama and Michigan. Assuming Clemson wins the ACC, there is no need for a "replacement" team in the NY6. Since UCF is ranked #11, that means the top 12 teams get into a NY6 bowl. That includes #12 Syracuse.
That means right now, all of the current bowl eligible teams are still in play for the Camping World Bowl. The ACC also has enough teams to fill out all of the Tier 1 bowls and the Military Bowl.
However, ND vs. Syracuse is this weekend. If ND loses, they probably stay in the NY6 but might fall out of the CFP. If Syracuse loses, they are probably out of NY6 range. In that case, the ACC has enough teams to reach the Independence Bowl.
hot take: Miami goes to a bowl as a 5-7 exemption
And we go as a 6-5 team??
Doubtful. Their APR is 77th; the following schools that could theoretically finish 5-7 all have a better APR and bowls are actually required to take teams in order of APR to fill slots.
Key:
* 5 win teams in bold
* 4-win teams that play a 4- or 5-win team on this list in italics
* Teams that play anyone on this list, regardless of both team's records, have all such opponents listed
Air Force (T2) - Colorado State
Vanderbilt (T2) - Mississippi, Tennessee
Illinois (T8)
Kansas State (T14)
Maryland (T25)
Nebraska (T28)
Baylor (T34) - TCU
Wake Forest (T34)
Miami, OH (37)
Coastal Carolina (T41)
Indiana(T41)
Mississippi (T41) - Vanderbilt
Toledo (T46)
USCw (T49)
Tennessee (T52) - Vanderbilt
Colorado (T57)
Colorado State (T57)
Oklahoma State (T61) - TCU
Tulane (T67)
UT-San Antonio (T67)
TCU (T75) - Baylor, Oklahoma State
That's 12 teams guaranteed to finish 5-6/7 or better and three more that can get to 5-6/7 by beating someone on this list (Air Force is 4-6, Colorado State 3-7). 65 or 80 slots are taken and there are twenty-two teams with 5 wins including the twelve in bold here. With only 15 bowl slots left, the Hurricanes basically has to got 6-6 or 7-5 to make a bowl game; there simply won't be enough waiver slots left for them to make one at 5-7.
Low key one of the most depressing comments I've seen.
Does the ACC get a portion of NDs playoff payout?
No.
Then ND needs to lose in its CFP 1st game.
Isn't the whole playoffs payout based on just getting in?
Nope.. here is the ND deal below:
ND- 1. Gets the best Olympic Sports conference to park their teams in
2. Full money share from said Olympic sports- including NCAA tourney
3. To keep all of their NBC football and Bowl Money
4. To take a better - not worse- ACC Bowl whenever applicable
5. To play an AVERAGE of 5 ACC games per year and can count neutral site shamrock series games in this count.
The ACC gets:
1. an average of 5 games per year against ND
2. -Perhaps- keeps the camping world bowl tie in, since ND is so awesome
3. Might get a slight jump in money in 2076 when Swofford finally gets a linear, real ACC channel on line
Wonder who got the better end of that deal?
Yep. F Notre Dame.
Why does that matter? The Shamrock Series is just a Notre Dame home game that they move to a different stadium.
It matters because those games were being played anyway, so Cuse and BC would have gotten the precious ND games without the ACC bending over and accommodating ND with this ridiculous "deal".
Still not sure why you're pointing out the Shamrock Series. If ND wants to move one of their home games to another venue, who cares? The other team has to travel anyway. For the last two ACC teams that participated, the game was much closer to them than South Bend. (Boston College to Fenway Park and Syracuse to Yankee Stadium.)
VT got to play Notre Dame twice so far.
We've never played them before.
So, for me, we're getting something out of it.
The sour grapes and whining of the Notre Dame haters are just a bonus.
This is what I foresee right now:
CFP Orange: Clemson
Camping World Bowl: Syracuse
Belk: NC St
Sun: Duke/GT
Pinstripe: Pitt
Music City: Duke/GT
Military: BC
Independence: UVA
Quick Lane: Miami
Gasparilla: Wake/FSU/VT
Pitt can't drop below Tier 2 for participating in the title game.
6 win cannot jump 7 win.
Not sure prognosis if all 3 of Wake/FSU/VT are bowl eligible.
Actually, they can. Back in 2014, 6-6 VT went to the Military Bowl instead of 7-5 NC State (who got bumped down to the St. Pete bowl).
So that means that if we beat Marshall and go bowling, we could end up in a better bowl than UVA.
Haven't they reset the rules since 2014?
This 6 win can't jump 7 is an important point.
Pretty sure that's an NCAA thing, saying that bowls that are selecting an "at large" team due to their contracted conference not having enough eligible teams must select a 7-win team before a 6-win team.
Don't think so. This is what I found from last year:
You gotta read all the way to the end to get the point: if Orlando only took one team, 7-win BC could get bumped below 6-win uva, Duke and FSU.
That's... pretty much exactly what I was saying. The "7-win before 6-win" rule only comes into play when bowl games have to go outside of their conference contracts to fill slots when their conference doesn't have eligible teams. Otherwise, it's based on whatever contracts each conference has written up with their bowl partners.
Though, leg for reminding me that it's based on overall record now and not conference record. That does limit our available pool of games a bit.
I thought it was based on conference wins, anyway. Basically a 4-4 VT can jump a theoretical 5-3 State, BC, Syracuse or Georgia Tech but couldn't leapfrog a 6-2 Syracuse or Pitt.
*sees above comments that weren't loaded for some reason when I posted*
Guess I was wrong. Ah, well :)
Another historical reminder I want to throw out there.
2015 - VT is 6-6, and had an outside shot of getting into Tier 1.
Clemson and FSU went NY6. UNC got Russell Athletic.
There were five teams ahead of VT in the hierarchy:
Miami, Pitt 8-4
NC State, Duke, Louisville 7-5
This was the year that Belk really wanted VT, but couldn't get us, because no one had selected Pitt. If Miami and Pitt had both been taken by Tier 1 bowls, we could have jumped two of the 7-5 teams into a Tier 1 bowl. Instead, Pitt got dropped to tier 2 (Military), and we were in the Independence Bowl by default.
I also really hope FSU loses today.
You're wish has been granted.
Week 13 update (fully updated)
Eligible:
Clemson 12-0
(Notre Dame 12-0)
Syracuse 9-3
NC State 8-3
Pitt 7-5
Duke 7-5
Boston College 7-5
Georgia Tech 7-5
UVA 7-5
Miami 7-5
Wake Forest 6-6
On the edge:
VT 5-6
NC State and VT have a 12th game next week.
ACC has enough teams to fill all of their bowl tie-ins and then some.
Also, Heart of Dallas Bowl has been renamed the First Responder Bowl.
Assuming Clemson heads to the playoff, Syracuse or NC State will go to Camping World and the other must go to a Tier One bowl.
There are then three Tier One slots still available. I thought any of the remaining teams can go there because all have six or seven wins (within one win of each other), but mYbe that's not true.
You are correct. In theory if we beat Marshall we could be going to a Tier 1 bowl.
Even assuming Pittsburgh is a lock for Tier 1 for being Coastal champs and eats up a second spot (I don't think that's actually in the selection rules, but maybe it should be?) a 6-6 VT is still more appealing than most of the 7-5 teams in the ACC standings this year.
Latest chatter.
While 6-6 won't get into Tier 1 (based on what this guy says, but I'm not sure of), not all 7-5 teams are guaranteed Tier 1. There's six 7-5 teams and only 2 or 3 Tier 1 slots (once you factor in the teams that are better than 7-5 that have to go that high).
I don't know why it's listing both Heart of Dallas and Gasparilla. Perhaps there aren't enough teams available from the other conference?
I thought bowls could select any ACC team or ND, as long as they were within one win.
This
That's what I thought. I hadn't heard anything about a 6-6 corollary to the "one-win" rule until this topic, and cannot find any documentation anywhere about it.
The only rule I've seen about 6-6 teams was when looking up the C-USA bowl tie-ins, and they require all 7+ win teams to be selected before 6-6 teams.
Looking at the records, Syracuse or NC State will be going to Camping World. The other would drop into Tier 1. (They are currently a half game apart, so it won't matter if NC State wins or loses next week.)
That should mean that the pool for the remaining Tier 1 games would include:
Pitt 7-5
Duke 7-5
Boston College 7-5
Georgia Tech 7-5
UVA 7-5
Miami 7-5
Wake Forest 6-6
and maybe VT at 6-6
Three of those would be chosen.
via GIPHY
That would be awesome to go to the Military Bowl. Would get a great showing from the DMV Hokies and would play a decent opponent.
It would be an American team. Bowl eligible teams from the American include UCF, Temple, Cincy, USF, Memphis, Houston, and Tulane.
I wonder if VT vs. Memphis would be an enticing matchup for the bowl organizers and American.
Doubt it's Memphis since they won their division. My money is on Temple.
There's no evidence that being a division winner has any bearing on American bowl placement. Temple won their division (and the conference) in 2016. Navy was division co-champion in 2015 (losing the head-to-head against Houston). Cincinnati was the conference co-champion in 2014 (before divisions, losing head-to-head against Memphis). All three of those teams went to the Military Bowl.
Meanwhile, Memphis was a division champ last year, and got invited to the Liberty Bowl (played in their home stadium), which was a conditional arrangement due to the SEC not having enough eligible teams.
Y'all are so optimistic. *IF* we win Saturday we'll probably end up in the Gasparilla bowl against like Arkansas State or Georgia Southern
I would be so happy if we play in Detroit
So WHEN Tech beats Marshal how quick will be turnaround to order bowl tickets?
The official selections will be made on Sunday, December 2. So it wouldn't be much different than waiting on the ACCCG to determine the bowl hierarchy for the conference.
Usually the preorder forms have been sent out by now. So unless the post office has screwed up bringing mine they haven't been sent out yet.
We're usually bowl eligible earlier in the season...
Correct so how would it work if say Tech is in a bowl game on Dec. 20th how would they mail forms, mail back, get tickets printed up and mailed out in time? As anyone seen or heard anything?
Funny story. Camping World Bowl plays against the #3 pick out of the Big 12. In theory, that would be WVU. And NC State is projected to go there from the ACC.
So that matchup would happen after all.
I got $10 on Military vs Temple
Living in Florida, I'm hoping for Gasparilla so I can go to the game. However, I just want to get Bowl eligible and then let the chips fall where they may.
I wanna play Minnesota!
Quick Lane Bowl lets gooooo
Minnesota played in that bowl in 2015. Big Ten has a rule where they have to supply five different teams to each bowl over a six year period (2014-2019). Plus the Big Ten didn't go last year.
So, it's possible, but I could also see how it doesn't happen.
Pinstripe Bowl Let's GOOOO
More notes from Twitter
Id be happy with a bowl game in tampa.
A full breakdown from Giglio.
It pretty much goes into greater detail what he tweeted above.
Sounds like Military Bowl wants us. If we're eligible, the only way we don't go there is if we somehow get picked by a Tier 1 bowl. I don't know why he keeps saying a 6-6 team can't go to tier 1, but I'll defer to him since he's an actual reporter that does this for a living. It could be an unofficial rule that none of the Tier 1 games want to deal with a 6-6 team when there are so many 7-5 teams available.
We don't have to worry about a repeat of 2015, where we got pushed further down the bowl hierarchy because no one wanted to take 8-4 Pitt. Syracuse and NC State have to be picked by CWB or Tier 1, and everyone else is 7-5 or 6-6.
I know you're just laying out the possibilities, but this bowl talk before Saturday is giving me anxiety.
Hope you're feeling better now!
I'm holding out hope for a Music City Miracle and a trip to Nashville. Don't think that's happening though.
Military Bowl...Not a bad place for Hokie Fans. Been there for the Hokie Game when Frank Beamer was a "medical" Coach in the Box, I guess you would say..
Here's a good link with a good breakdown
Story
The TLDR version:
-Gator Bowl is picking ACC instead of Music City (although this would guarantee Music City next year).
-NC State is probably going to Gator Bowl, although still in play for CWB.
-Camping World will take NC State or Syracuse.
-Gator and Sun Bowl prefer Miami. (Sun Bowl is more interested in TV matchup than ticket sales.)
-ACC is pressuring Pinstripe to take Pitt (but there is no rule about how far the ACCCG loser can fall anymore.)
-UVA is probably going to Belk.
-ACC teams can skip the Gasparilla Bowl since it's close to exams. Duke has already said they aren't going there.
Watching UVA get smacked by a 3rd rate SEC team in the Belk Bowl should be fun.
Belk bowl tweeting from "selection committee"
Belk is going to have to choose between 6-6 VT and 7-5 UVA.
We beat them head to head and we played ND OOC. Both 4-4 in ACC. VT proven draw to Charlotte, uva questionable.
They've put a poll on reddit asking who should play in the Belk Bowl and the consensus seems to be GT vs Auburn
Honestly, that's what I'd vote for too.
Yeah, love being a 3rd wheel
Side note: This thread from Belk Bowl is using quotes from Hamilton: The American Musical to describe their thought process of picking teams.
How do they determine which tier 1 bowl chooses first
Back room politics.
Doesn't look like NC State vs. WVU is going to happen at all. If Camping World Bowl can get WVU from the Big 12, they want Syracuse to match up old Big East. If they end up with Iowa State, they want NC State for better ticket sales.
So would that move NC State to the Belk Bowl? Would we drop out of Military if that happened? Would Military want UVA twice in a row? Or would we move into the Pinstripe Bowl over UVA?
Bowls detest repeat teams/games the most. You won't see UVA in Annapolis
From the linked article:
Syracuse and NC State both have to be CWB or Tier 1, and that will happen. Due to records, everyone else can slide between Tiers 1 and 2. Pitt will likely go Tier 1 due to ACC pressure to not see a division champ drop to Tier 2.
VT is the first choice of the Military Bowl. If we're bowl eligible, the only way we don't go there is if a Tier 1 bowl picks us. While it's theoretically possible, I don't think any of them want to take a 6-6 team when there are six 7-5 teams to pick from.
So essentially, if Cuse goes to Orlando, Pinstripe can pick whoever they want, including, most likely us
Would Pinstripe pick us over BC or Pitt? and if they pick Pitt would Sun pick us?
If Cuse goes CWB, then NC State goes Gator, and Miami to Sun.
BC went to Pinstripe last year.
Please let the Belk not pick uva. That would be fantastic.
Not sure how much to read into this tweet. (And if you don't follow the Belk Bowl on Twitter, you should.)
The Belk Bowl account is a fantastic follow on the Twitters.
We need to hire that person for the VT Twitter account.
They're gooooooood.
Probably won't get official word until tomorrow, but it's not like it's a surprise.
So, let's say Pitt happens, that would mean Clemson and Pitt would get NY6. I don't see Clemson not getting NY6 in this scenario. That could move us up to tier 1 and make things really interesting.
Not necessarily. Pitt seems to be a hot potato for bowls. And there's still five other 7-5 teams ahead of us (with three available Tier 1 slots.)
Did they eliminate the rule that says a championship game participant can't drop below a tier 1?
I believe so.
If Pitt wins, they go NY6 as ACC champ.
Yeah, but the point I was getting at is that Pitt's not really a factor in everyone else's bowl selection. So moving them out of the pool of 7-5/6-6 teams isn't changing what the bowls want to do. In fact, it probably makes life easier, because they don't have to worry about ACC pressure to take Pitt.
Pitt to Sun is appropriate. Pitt is the hot potato team that no one wants, and Sun is the hot potato bowl that no one wants.
This also implies that CWB is getting Iowa State, who is fourth in the Big 12 pecking order, and CWB gets the third choice after the committee, which makes it sound like Oklahoma is going to the semis.
Dammit. It makes me a little sad for LOLUVa to go to Belk. I wanted to see them in the sun or the Quick Lane bowl.
UVA will get smacked by SCAR, so at least it'll be fun to watch.
It makes sense though, a bunch of cocks playing a bunch of dicks.
Huh. That's an actual rematch in the bowl. I kinda like the matchup. Cincinnati is a good team that we should be able to beat based on talent alone. It would be a very good test for the younger players to end the season on. Someone that is beatable, but will be a difficult game.
At least it's a rematch of a game from four years ago.
At this point, I'm just updating for the rest of the conference.
Key difference:
Quick Lane Bowl had BC in 2016 and Duke in 2017. Duke definitely won't go, and BC prefers not to go.
It's said so often but man, they have the best social media team!
Although I might have to unfollow them for a month with UVA being in the game. Now my Twitter feed is full of Cavman (not falling off a horse) and broken scissors.
That's just wrong and depressing.
So when do these actually get announced?
Is it by twitter, or at some approximate time on the ESPN selection show?
It trickles in during the afternoon. ESPN won't be announcing the full slate of New Year's Six until 2 PM and full top 25 until 3 PM (or the other way around).
But a lot of the bowls that are far enough down the list that won't be affected by a domino reaction from the NY6 might start leaking out any minute.
Thanks.
I'd like to know where VT is playing...
EDIT: Oh, the Irony:
Dabo Swinney: "Nothing carries over. We'd have been excited for anywhere we're going in the Post Season."
Seems to me a LOT carries over...
Also: "we got pizza. We're low budget here..."
Clemson is low budget? Eh, not really...
That's not really in doubt with the Military Bowl. The biggest question at this point is who we play.
New addition to the "Things I Never Thought I'd Be Saying Aloud" list. I really hope we get the Military Bowl. I'll be in Maryland that week anyway, so it should be really easy for me to get to that game.
Military Bowl will be a nice close to this season.
Awesome Father / Son quality time for him as a Junior in college. We both love Annapolis.
Let's get this done and finish with 3-0.
Syracuse picked over NC State for the CWB, to play WVU.
I like a good rivalry game so approve of this pick. Hopefully the trophy is up for grabs.
Edit: also who doesnt want leave Syracuse in the middle of winter to go to Florida.
It also means we get to see NC State vs Texas A&M, which should be a good match up.
Well they do have a history of beating FSU coaches.
I still would have loved seeing a game canceled by a hurricane set up at a bowl in Florida.
I don't expect that to be a good matchup, but for viewing purposes I'm okay if it is.
Belk took Uva.
Pinstripe took Miami.
Any shot at Music City?
As mentioned in almost every article linked, they aren't taking an ACC team.
However, this guarantees that Music City takes ACC next year.
Let's go! Should be a heavily pro-Hokie crowd in Annapolis.
It's a nooner.
Undefeated in nooners this year.
Last year's Military Bowl had Navy beating UVA 49-7
Military Bowl it is.
Pitt-Stanford in the Sun
Couldn't have happened to a douchier team.
Cincinnati
And I suppose this is where the thread comes full circle . . .
Thoughts:
- Memphis is going to destroy Wake
- Boise isn't playing in Boise?
- Miami-Wisky for the second straight year but in a much lower bowl
- Syracuse-WVU sounds like a fun game on paper
- Go Cocks
Dungey vs Mountain Jesus? going with the cousins on this one, but secretly hoping the cuse beats them down. Definitely betting the over either way.
#HardThingsTogether always ends with LOLUVa being sore.
The Belk Bowl is on at the exact same time as the Peach Bowl, so unfortunately no one is going to see UVA get stomped.
Kinda like their spring
gamefestivalzima tasting event.I'm sort of surprised by that.
The Belk bowl didn't get the memo about the playoffs?
It's sponsored by Belk. Not sure they got the memo about Y2K yet.
The Peach Bowl is a non-playoff game this year, but it's Michigan and Florida so everyone will be watching that.
Yet Belk Bowl gets on ABC since the NY6 contracts are specific to the main ESPN channel.
OK, that makes sense.
Still, with all the timeslots available, going up against the BCS affiliate bowl is a pretty bold move.
I'm sure a bunch of S. Carolina Gamecocks will be watching the Hoos get stomped.
