HOT TOPIC: Who is the better Hokie QB: Al Clark or Maurice DeShazo?

(Making the assumption of course that both are better than Grant Noel)

DeShazo. Clark was terrible. We called him Happy Feet.

Having seen DeShazo last play when I was 5 and Clark when I was 9, my opinion has a lot of value here.

I lean Clark by a hair. I like that DeShazo played in 3 seasons to Clark's 2, but Clark holds the edge in winning, not turning the ball over and rushing while holding steady in completing passes and QB rating. DeShazo also had a bunch of guys who reached the NFL on his teams at RB/WR/TE (Antonio Freeman, Ray Crittenden, Vaughn Hebron, Bryan Still, Ken Oxendine and John Burke) whereas Clark had Oxendine and Shyrone Stith and that's about it.

Clark wins in: Regular Season record, lower INT%, rushing yards per carry, #BEATBAMA
DeShazo wins in: yards per attempt, TD%, ability to not get hurt, number of prostitution-related arrests

Push (or as close as you can get) in: Completion %, QB Rating, Rushing TD's, Bowl Record

Clark's career record: 16-8, 193/361 (53.5%) for 2623 yards (7.3 yards per attempt), 19 TD and 9 INT (5.3 TD%, 2.5% INT%). 126.9 QB Rating. 181 rushes for 572 yards (3.1 yards per carry) and 9 TD. Bowl loss in 1997 (lost to UNC 42-3 in Gator Bowl), Bowl win in 1998 (#BEATBAMA 38-7 in Music City Bowl).

DeShazo's career record: 19-15-1, 414/775 (53.4%) for 5860 yards (7.7 yards per attempt), 47 TD and 33 INT (6.1 TD%, 4.3% INT%). 128.4 QB Rating. 292 rushes for 424 yards (1.5 yards per carry) and 10 TD. Bowl win in 1993 (Beat Indiana 45-20 in Independence Bowl), Bowl loss in 1994 (lost to Tennessee 45-23 in Gator Bowl).

It's like I've always said, when in doubt, you HAVE to go the prostitution related arrests for the tie breaker.

since deshazo was the qb when i first started watching vt football with my new friends when my family moved to va, i've always had a soft spot in my heart for him. looking at the numbers above, they both look pretty average.

Had to laugh....I followed the link to the news article to refresh my memory, and this face was in an ad next to the story...apologies to ratheyon and the math people, but the face combined with the story was funny.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Before my time.

DeShazo sold my roommate a used Honda, so I go with him (true story).

Seriously, this might be unfounded, but I remember Al Clark on the sidelines against Syracuse with an injury...for some reason I feel like he could have been playing. Maybe I was drunk and don't accurately recall. Anybody remember this?

DeShazo is still selling cars.

I say he gets the nod. Totally different eras of VT football. He was the start of the uptick and weapons around him weren't there yet. Clark was a pain to watch. By then hokie football was more established and he really didn't do anything with it.

Speaking of this era, does anyone remember a LB named del Rico (or rio)?

George DelRicco, I believe. Yes, if I remember correctly, a tackling machine.

Yeah that's him. Still looks like a beast. Apparently his baby daughter was severely injured in a car accident.

DeShameO. He was great against okay or bad teams and seemed to choke against anybody with a pulse.

DeShaz
