I know many of us would mind seeing this happen.
Our knees would all be safer if true.
Sources have told me that Georgia Tech football coach Paul Johnson will retire from coaching. Johnson has been at Georgia Tech since 2008. He compiled a 82-59 record in his 11 years on the job. Georgia Tech will be looking for a new head coach.— BillShanks (@BillShanks) November 28, 2018
Just spoke to Tech's Paul Johnson. He wouldn't say explicitly he's retiring. Said he's talking to his team soon and they'll be a release at 2:30. He did say he plans to coach Tech through the bowl game. "There's nothing finalized," he said. "I'm going to talk to the team."— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) November 28, 2018

God I can't wait to watch that program scrape bottom for a few years because they don't have receivers who can catch or run routes and a quarterback who can throw to them.
Yep. No way Tobias Oliver is a traditional QB, he will be a RB, and Marshall will struggle as a one year stop gap that tries to pass. I love it.
Unless the new coach says, "Hey Kelly Bryant, want to get some revenge on the team who didn't think you could lead them to a natty?"
Or heck, there's lots of smoke that Khalil Tate will leave Arizona. There's going to be some decent QBs who can give you one solid year if you're stepping into the GT job.
I just don't know what quarterback in their right mind would step into a situation where they have linemen who don't know how to pass block at a college level and receivers who don't know how to run routes or catch at a college level. If I'm a halfway decent receiver or offensive lineman in the last 10 years, I'm staying as far away from that team as possible. You don't get to the NFL blocking every play as a receiver and throwing cut and chop blocks every play as an offensive lineman.
You may be surprised to hear that three of PJ's receivers got drafted. Don't know that any of them ever worked out though.
That does surprise me. What NFL team in their right mind takes a kid who played football there? They must have tested off the charts.
Demaryius Thomas is the only one who has actually done anything of note
None of the three I mentioned were Demaryius Thomas. All three were PJ's guys. Stephen Hill, Darren Waller, and DeAndre Smelter. Waller is the only one who's still in the league.
DT wasn't one of PJs "guys" but played for him for 2/3 years
My Jets took a WR of course. Didn't pan out, couldn't tell you his name off the top of my head but literally the only thing that we wanted was downfield passes. That GM is no longer employed to say the least.
Wait didn't we have a an ATH flip to them a year or two ago to play QB for them? Definitely stinks for that kid.
James Graham would have been a great addition to our squad :-(
Georgia Tech fans are going to realize how good they've had it.
Agree- their (2 star ) recruiting with a traditional offense is a 4 win team.
Also, they are within 100 miles of UGA, Clemson, Bama and Auburn. They are a distant fifth in their own metro area, and recruiting to a traditional offense isn't going to be much easier.
If anything, I would swing wildly again and go with a coach that runs a crazy fast-break Baylor style. You can't run a traditional offense and expect to compete with the rest of the ACC/SEC with their limitations.
I actually think the opposite. If I'm a GT fan, I'd be thrilled. Putting personal feelings on PJ aside (his face is so punchable!), from a football perspective, his system will always have a cap on the success of your program. Sure, you're pretty much gonna win 7 to 8 games every year but you will NEVER be a real contender. The only way you win anything of significance is if other programs fall apart around you, which is exactly what's happened the years GT has done well in the ACC. But if they get a good coach, they can be real threats. Their institutional academics that might present a challenge to getting certain players aren't much different from us so that can be overcome with good recruiting and coaching. They're in a very talent rich area and while its true they're competing with SEC big boys (and Clemson) in the same area, there's still enough to go around. Plus, Atlanta can be a very appealing place to some recruits, especially those that have grown up in the region. Personally, I think GT is fairly attractive job. There's a lot of tools there to find success
Paul Johnson Retires
I believe he made an off hand comment during a post game presser this season when asked about the play calling saying something along the lines of "Oh the guy next year can deal with that", wouldn't shock me if he did retire
He is retiring, you need to change the title.
My knees all of a sudden stopped bothering me.
The only downside if this is true, would be not exacting our revenge on CPJ.
This just in ...... [Military Academy] Head Coach has been hired as the new GT Head Coach.
Better not be Army's Coach. I love how he's turned things around.
Preach.
Sounds like he is indeed one of the options (pun intended) they are considering
ITS HAPPENING every national and ACC best reporter is reporting it now. While I hate that Fuente and Bud couldn't get the win against him I'm glad to see him gone.
what about the ACC worst reporters?
Mark Berman doesn't cover football.
I pray that they don't try to get Ken Niumatalolo from Navy. Get the Triple Option crap out of the ACC.
I wonder if this will either piss Fuente off or if he is relieved. I bet Bud is pissed he will never be able to beat PJ again.
Are you kidding? Fuente has his camo crocks on right NOW sipping a stiff bourbon in his basement thinking the automatic division L is dead. He's giddy.
Sounds like something more along the lines of what Bud is doing right now. But if you have #sauces saying Fuente too is a camo croc wearing bourbon aficionado, then I'm an even bigger fan of Fuente than I thought...
I gotta get me some camo crocs for tailgating.
Monken at Army is top of the list. Go figure.
Dammit!!! It's not so much that I want GT to fail, though I do, as I want Army to succeed.
Current mood:
I also hope GT doesn't get a better coach. I think they could be a 9 win/season team.
GT has lots of institutional disadvantages that will likely hold them back from being a 9win/season team. They do exist in a talent hotbed with the greater Atlanta area, but that area is heavily recruited by Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, etc. They won't ever be getting first or second round pickings from their own backyard.
I'd rather face Saban every year. Seriously. At least he beats you fair and square and half of your DL isn't out for the year after the game. ANY coach in that spot is better for VT.
GT message boards are hysterical right now.
Got a link?
I was talking in general, The Swarm and Sting Talk Both have multiple threads running at this point.
Talking everything from happy to sad about the descision. They also have some whacky theories about which coach they think could take over.
This would be worth are entire year of disappointment if true. Now it only matters if GT changes from the triple option, but in order to get back to the ACCCG, we have to start beating the Jackets.
YYYYYYEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Drinks are on me. Fucking A. That chicken shit coach and his chicken shit offense are out of our fucking division. Fuck Off Paul, enjoy the lake you prick.
DC is now the happiest man alive.
Whew right when they were starting to get some steam behind that pass attack too.
I'm happy with this but I'm happier for dc.
LOL!! awesome. Appreciate it
Until they get another triple option disciple in. Don't go celebrating too hard yet. Although no chin balls is a win in itself.
Let's be honest here, bud. You don't really want him to enjoy the lake, do you? Unless by "enjoy" you mean "drown beneath". ;^)
Paul Johnson retired and DC is exuberant.
Ken Niumatalolo is in the midst of his worst season at Navy. We're not out of the woods yet.
UMD is rumored to be interested in him.
If Plank allows UMD to hire a triple option coach I'll eat my mask.
Excellent point, but worse case they hire a guy not near as good as PJ at strategy and in game adjustments. PJ won 7-8 games- Make that 5-6 with Ken. I'll settle for that.
Adam Rittenberg of ESPN reporting Ken Wisenhunt of the Chargers and Tony Eliot are targets.
Link
The Athletic beat writer has other candidates listed. No idea where this goes.
As a Titans fan I pray they hire Whisenhunt he was terrible coaching us
This! (note my username)
It leaves GT with an interesting decision to make, and one I assume they already had made to be ready for this moment. Do they stick with the triple option or move away from it?
It's going to be a rough few years for them if they do. They would have to recruit a JUCO QB at a minimum right?
JuCo or grad transfer. QB's will be available, if they can lure them in to GT.
They'd need 5 JUCO/grad transfer offensive linemen who could pass block worth a lick first.
Or Kelly Bryant.
I think you mean Jelly Bryant
This is promising news for ACC coastal, but I won't be celebrating until I know for sure that their next coach won't continue the triple option at GT.
I think they will bite the bullet now and blow up the triple option. The needed literally the best coach to ever run it to win 7-8 games peak. Yes, they had 2 magical years where they didn't fumble 3 times a game, but mostly it was a 7-8 win deal with him- this year 7 in a down ACC coastal. Why continue to sink your recruiting for 7 wins just to keep the option? Blow it up, have a couple down years, then enter the 20th century on offense.
You think they will give Kliff a call, he can recruit QBs.
Speaking of Kliff, I liked this Ringer piece if for no other reason that imagining football teams competing on The Bachelor for Kliff Kingsbury. I mean, he's just so damn handsome! Kliff, will you please take my Maroon and Orange rose?
https://www.theringer.com/2018/11/28/18116472/kliff-kingsbury-offensive-...
Lane Kiffin to hotlanta?
There's some Auburn folk talking that Gus Malzahn is gonna be bought out and go to GT. Of course, this is the same group that was convinced Gus was fired last week and Bob Stoops was coming, then Bob Stoops had to do an interview saying he had no idea where that came from but still. Wild rumors are fun
Will GT remain committed to the triple option? Because CPJ has a lot of "offspring"
UVA rejoices as they now believe they have a chance to beat VT. As previously seen, an annual excuse of theirs (taken directly from Le Sabre) is:
"The ACC continually schedules GT the week before we play VT and it wears our players out"
Yupp that's the reason.
2018 GT week 11
2017 GT week 9
2016 GT week 11
2015 GT week 8
2014 GT week 9
2013 GT week 8
2012 GT week 3
2011 GT Week 6
2010 GT Week 5
2009 GT Week 7
2008 GT Week 8 (Chinballs Hired)
2007 GT Week 4
2006 GT Week 4
2005 GT Week 9
2004 GT Week 10
2003 GT Week 11 (last time UVA won)
Odd. I'm showing 5 games against GT before VT:
2003, 2004, 2005 (they ended the season with Miami, we ended it with UNC), 2016 and 2018.
Since 2003, they've played 8 home games, 7 road games and had a bye week before their game against us. We've played 9 home games, 5 road games and had two bye weeks.
They've faced seven different opponents, we've faced nine. They've had one OT game before the VT game (this year), we've had three including the WF snoozefest. If you ignore bye weeks and look only at games played, we played four consecutive overtime games the week before the UVA game (2012-2015, against BC, Maryland, Wake and UNC)
You're right, threw me off clicking back through 15 years of schedules....
Understandable! I had to backtrack a few times myself when I caught that VT and UVA both played Miami as their "game before". That's when I caught the bye weeks.
Chinballs didn't start there till 08 so years before that don't really hold up anyway.
Also valid. Let me add that to the UVA sucks timeline.
Paul Johnson was a heckuva coach. Two 1-AA National Titles at Ga. Southern, turned Navy around overnight, and won 3 ACC Coach Of The Year Awards at GT.
When CPJ was OC at Hawaii, the Warriors upset #4 BYU 59-28 in 1990. Take a look at his offense back then.
That was a long way of saying "Fuck Paul Johnson"
Wow. No idea he was Hawaii OC running a spread.
He was one of the sports geniuses.
Abarri you can take the rumor part down. It's true, it's damn true!
I think GT needs to try and go and be the east coast Stanford. Target the smart jocks. I'm not sure if they can go full national recruiting like Stanford does. But I think they could do very well with east coast kids that get recruited by Stanford. Closer to home so family can come to the game, better game day atmosphere than Stanford etc. I hope they fail miserably at it, but I think that is the way to go vs keeping the triple option.
The problem with this strategy is that GT is known for Engineering and really only Engineering, Stanford is basically West Coast Harvard with multiple highly regarded programs. As a ChemE, making up a football team of Engineers is about as successful of a strategy as UVA hinging their entire season's success on winning one game in November and then blowing that game.
Some say, that on a clear night, if the moon is full, and you train your eyes just right, you can still see GT running past VT defenders.
Can't wait until next season. The triple option never got stopped last game.
Maybe Fuente can beat GT now.
**sad face
I will give him credit for telling his players before confirming the rumor.
Yeah, he's no Randy Edsall.
The only thing better would be if on his way off campus for the final day someone comes from his blindside and rolls this sonofabitch's knee hobbling him for the rest of his days. Get the fuck out.
You know the season has been flat out disappointing. Beating loluva was awesome and hilarious at the same time given the circumstances our team has faced this year. Making a bowl would still be nice but with the news that CPJ is retiring, the season seems a little better now. I hated the triple option. Just watching made my knees have sympathy pains.
O PRAISE YE SAINT PATELLA. YOU HAVE HEARD OUR PRAYERS AND HAVE ANSWERED THEM. WE SHALL REJOICE IN YOUR NAME.
